Small plans for my @loominggaia AU

I'm prolly gonna go on a semi-hiatus. I'll be focusing on making 3 fics at once: Formations of a Kingdom (Current AU fic rn), Scoria (My Saraia Backstory fic), and a as-of-now unnamed JW cartoon/Looming Gaia Modern AU crossover fic. Because fuck it.

Here's a link to a playlist to catch up on the JW cartoon stuff I'm using, because this has a surprising amount of fanfiction for this kinda stuff (And RAID Shadow Legends, despite being everywhere, has not much more (13 to the JW cartoon's 8, or barely over 50% more, despite RAID's insane advertisements and the cartoons' audience not usually making fanfiction, it's all ExJWs).

Anyway, I wanted to pop out a couple chapters of Scoria and the JW/LG fanfic, and give an outline of each.

Note that these are mild spoilers, but like the pre-surgery spoilers LG dropped there's prolly gonna be subplots and smaller details that didn't make it in.

Scoria

One night before she got to Folkvar Capital, Skylie decides to ask Saraia her side of her villainy towards Evangeline.

Saraia tells of a young woman killed to save her parents, only to find they had died in slavery. Enraged, she vows to never let Evangeline forget her rage until slaves were gone from the nascent kingdom, and the Scourge of Evangeline was born.

This fic will go deep into the lore of Evangeline, with the origin of slavery, the crowded politics of pre-Evangeline Noalen (It's a crowded muthafucka), and Saraia's trauma.

The JW/LG Crossover Modern AU

Context for the JW cartoons: Sophia, the titular girl in the cartoons, is a JW (If you couldn't tell), as is her brother Caleb (Titular boy), and her unnamed mom and dad (Literally just called Mom and Dad, I think). For some odd reason, her dad has this thick as all hell accent. No one else in the family has this accent. It's some sorta, IDK, East European accent? It's thick, tho. Like his biceps before ExJW Panda (The creator of the videos linked above, not the dragon one) said he got nerfed (IDK, a meme?)

Anyway, ExJWs (And their non-JW friendos) love to meme on the cult, and there's two major sources of inspo for the fanfics: Caleb and Sophia (The one I'm using for my fic) and Experience the Joy of Disciple Making (Which, I agree, would make one hell of a yuri/lesbian show if it weren't literal JW propaganda).

The comments of those videos do yearn for a brave soul to make the fics, never mind the existence of 14 total (8 of Caleb and Sophia, and 6 for the other one). Soon, there'll be 15, one being of my own penmanship (Boardmanship? Typemanship? What's the word for good writing on a keyboard?)

Anyway, basic plot! Uh, I don't have much right now beyond a few points:

It's in the future of the Caleb/Sophia cartoons, in like early-mid high school (For exact ages I'mma say Sophia's maybe 15-16 and Caleb's a couple years younger, like 14-15, or they're Irish Twins or actual twins, IDK yet, they both go to high school)

Sophia will be questioning at some point in the fic, and eventually become a lesbian. For whom? Well:

Fuck it, poly yuri! Alaine and one of the Evangeline Royal Cousins, fuck it! Which ERC? IDK, one of the chicks (Which is easily most of em: I have 3 out of maybe 13?)

If I do Amber or Citrine, they'd replace Carrie as the kid with two moms Sophia's mom torches for the entire video here:

The FGG will all be roughly high school age (Varied, but they'd all be 14-19, with Alaine, Elska and Isaac being the youngest and Evan, Jeimos and Linde as the oldest)

Mr. Ocean and Solveig will be the gang's mentors/Former sitters they still hang out with and have a Discord with. They'll be in their maybe 30s-40s. I might make Solveig an ExJW herself, why not? Could make a very easy replacement for her original escape plan in canon.

I'm prolly gonna make th Evangeline Royals and Sovereign noticeably less fucked up (Sovereign doesn't drug his brother and take over half the ocean and pull a Genghis Khan and make so many kids half of the ocean's cecaelia in a few millennia are his, and he's only married to Jewel, and Machine's Champ's wife and they had Vex, who's also in the FGG because fuck it, and the Evangeline Royals are just sorta strict but not terrible, and saints compared to canon for several)

If I don't have Amber of Citrine as Sophia's love interest, Carrie exists still, and the other JW propaganda (Not gonna repeat that shit again, it's Jade/Neeta now) are her moms (No reason, just because)

No matter what happens, Amber will be paralyzed and need a wheelchair, and Maui's a monitor lizard (Maybe a service animal so he has an excuse to show up, IDK what for tho)

Justinia and the rest of Amber's family will be there too, and have various mobility issues (Justinia might be an amputee from the Gulf War, Jet was born without legs, Clarity got a snakebite that required her leg removed, one of em has multiple sclerosis, etc), and Amber was adopted for reasons IDK yet (Might not even have her adopted and just have her know the ERCs as family friends, like Cyana or Angie knew Justinia from the Gulf War or something)(IDK what it is with me today and the Gulf War)

Might have Nicole and Jecka from Class of '09 show up too, IDK (I'm being an oddly obsessive slut with smaller fandoms today, IDK why that is), and have them just be there or as some sorta reference

I'll fill out much of the teaching roles in the school Sophia, the ERCs, the Jetinia kiddos (Jetinia being my ship name for Jet and Justinia) and the FGG go to:

As I noted Cerulea and Rodrig look like teachers sans hat and makeup, I might have them be teachers (Maybe Cerulea's the principal or something, IDK). Might not do both, but IDK

Mr. Ocean or Solveig might be a teacher, likely for biology or history (And if I do Solveig as a teacher and ExJW, I'd likely have her as a sorta mentor for Sophia to help the gal break free from her JW brainwashing)

Saraia's definitely gonna be a teacher, and maybe be the biology teacher? Either way, King's gonna be her leucistic pet reptile (Maybe a large snake or crocodilian, IDK yet), and she also has various reptiles, amphibians and birds as pets (Replacing the Saraians)

The other High Rulers are prolly gonna be teachers too: Sovereign as a health/gym teacher (Might give him a dad bod and not the 600 Pound Life bod he has now), Titania as a depressed art teacher, Oberon as the music teacher, Gultopp for gym (Why not?), Hethor prolly for a foreign language (IDK for her), Chua as a religion teacher (How it's done normally, just tellin' them facts about the religions and not pressing beliefs on kiddos)(And she has pet snakes named after her canon siblings), Okatogg and Hulushka as subs (Because goofy haha), Serafeen as a chemistry/astronomy teacher (Or just a general science teacher), Qara as the finance/Life Skills teacher (And be way less bitchy than in canon), Roz as an English Teacher, and Marghan as a cool ASF homeroom teacher (And he's not the psycho he is canonically, and he has a pet parrot named Pidi!)

None of the larger issues with the canon High Rulers really exists here (Sovereign's not fat and tryna be Genghis Khan of the Sea, Serafeen's not obsessed with Project Starlight but is in love with space, Oberon has a way better married life and isn't cheating with Qara and Titania, Marghan is just a cool, hip young teacher, Qara isn't a greedy hyper-capitalist, and Gultopp isn't ashamed of Sygbarne)

Roz will have lost Tep to a cult, prolly the JWs, and Tep's referenced at a JW meeting

May add the Hoyoverse games too, likely just to throw around names for convenience (That's 3 games I have names to steal from), but I might have the remaining main characters (Aether from Genshin (I have Lumine already), Stelle and Caelus from HSR and Belle and Wise from ZZZ) be more major, but IDK yet

Beyond these, Zoe (A girl Sophia converts in the cartoons) will feature aplenty, the High Rulers kids might show up (Likely Blomi, Sygbarne, Naduna, Kobi, Keatto, Thetos, Winnie, OJ, and Kast), Drifter's Hollow characters may also appear (Maybe Flora's also a teacher, maybe a math teacher?), Karenza and Darshaan may appear (As Isaac's parents), maybe some unnamed from the cartoons, Carrie (Two moms kid) may also show up too.

I might have Sophia join an extracurricular GSA (Gender/Sexuality Alliance) club, and maybe join an attached Discord (She'll also join an FGG Discord once she starts getting buddy buddy with Alaine, the ERC I choose once they get into the throuple)

The latter chapters may have Sophia becoming PIMO (ExJW code for Physically In, Mentally Out, AKA she's doing the motions but not really dedicated anymore as compared to a PIMI, or Physically In, Mentally In but still dedicated more than a POMO, or Physically Out, Mentally Out) and eventually fade from the JWs, maybe taking Caleb with her

Once Sophia joins one of the two aforementioned Discords (FGG or GSA Discords), I'll be shoving in some Discord chat chapters, where most or all of the chapter will be Discord chatting). May have more once she joins both

Dream BPR: Frequently Asked Questions

What challenge rules are you following?  The short answer is, I’m not following any! The first rainbowcy I ever attempted was in the sims 3 before @berrysweetboutique had even turned her BPR into an official challenge (it was.. a long time ago lmao). Because of that I’ve always had ideas for my eventual reboot that didn’t really fit into the established norms of the challenge. You could say that I’m loosely inspired by the original ruleset and I may be including some elements of the updated ruleset in later gens, but don’t hold me to it :)

What happened to your first BPR on this blog? The Buttercream Rainbowcy is still on this blog! The first two gens were completed and I had just barely started the third when I decided to reboot everything. You can read that story using these three links and browse through the legacy extras. If you really want to waste a couple hours, DM me and I’ll send you the link to the Wordpress blog where I attempted my first ever rainbowcy - just a heads up the writing is obviously horrible and I only made it through 3 gens 

Will I spoil any of your new BPR for myself if I want to read the old one? Nope! I’ve definitely taken heavy inspo from my first attempt, like with names and characters and certain plot points like Jasmine’s disappearance (but she vanished under verrrry different circumstances this time around). I would say that gen 2 is the most similar to it’s source material since I still want it to focus on Rose dealing with the trauma of her mother’s disappearance, and I’ll be exploring the same story I was going to in gen 3. Thankfully I never got far enough into Hib’s story to really spoil anything for readers. Overall, I promise you this is a very different story than my first BPR on this blog, and I’m so excited for you all to read it!

Where is the purple spouse, why did you skip peach and teal, why are the rules for the yellow heir missing, etc.? See the first question! I’m going rogue with this challenge in order to tell the story I’ve always wanted to. It was really important to me to have a black and a gold generation, and I never really connected with the prompt for the yellow heir so I threw it out! I am still borrowing inspiration from wherever I find it, so I may pull in elements from other challenge rule sets in the future as well. 

You reference one of the Major Arcana for each generation, are you also doing a tarot legacy challenge? Once again, nope! Although when I was researching this challenge I got inspired to implement the symbolism of the Major Arcana in each generation, which really really helped guide the plot when I was writing it out. That’s all you’ll get from me for now ;)

So what’s the deal with Gen 1? I took a page out of @simblrinterests book and did it as gameplay! But fret not, all will be revealed in time.

1. Describe how you first started writing and when you first posted: My high school English teacher always encouraged me to write and that’s how it started. I wrote a lot of poetry before starting fiction/fan-fic and started posting earlier this year.

2. Which of your characters do you typically resonate most closely with? Do you base any characters off of yourself? Every character I write has a part of me, not just in the writing sense but also some traits of mine. I tend to write from Harry’s pov or any other character that is Louis’ romantic interest in the story, entirely because it’s a lot easier to write about Louis rather than as him.

3. Where do you often find inspiration? Real life mostly. Songs, movies and books as well.

4. Has quarantine helped or hindered your writing process? Didn’t notice much of a difference really.

5. Do you listen to music/noise while you write or do you prefer silence? I prefer silence when I write, helps me focus. Rarely do I find a song that fits perfectly with a scene so I have that on repeat until I can’t.

6. What is your biggest writing pet peeve in your writing or in general? People who say only authors with popular works deserve to be called writers.

7. Describe your ideal writing setup ink stains on my hand, fountain pen scribbling smoothly over the paper and a lamp as the only source of light. Somewhere warm and cozy.

8. Favourite time of day to write? Dawn and after midnight.

9. Favourite genre to write + one you’d like to try writing in the future? Horror, fantasy, magical realism, historical and dark elements. Sci-fi is a genre that is way out of my comfort zone so probably that.

10. Do you struggle with writer’s block? How do you typically overcome it? All the bloody time lmaoo. Usually I stick to songs that I enjoy listening, switch genres or plots to overcome the block.

11. What is the easiest part of your writing process and the most difficult? Everything other than outlining is my fav part. Outlining is one pain in the ass.

12. How do you come up with original characters? (If applicable) real life is where the key is.

13. What is your favourite and least favourite word? Least fav: moist fav: tasavvur (it’s an Urdu word that translates into imagination or contemplation)

14. What is one thing about your writing that you’re really proud of and one thing you hope to continue working at? I’m really glad I can paint the imagery of a scene quite well. Paragraph starters is what I’m working on atm.

15. What work of yours has your favourite ‘verse/world building? How did you come up with it? The Blood of Love is one of my best work and I say this very humbly. The atmosphere, the themes, the overshadowing, everything I wrote of it, I absolutely love it and am proud of it.

16. What font and size do you write in? Single spaced or double? Georgia, 11, single spaced.

17. What is a typo(s) you find yourself making consistently? Leaving out apostrophise.

18. (If applicable) do you separate fic writing from fandom? Most of the times. When I’m writing canon, I look into the fandom for inspo.

19. What emotion is you’re favourite to write? Which is the most difficult? Fear is my fav emotion to write, as weird as that sounds. I find writing humour very challenging.

20. What is one thing you hope readers always take away from your works? Writers put a lot of their time into fics and appreciation for the work is always heart-warming. Other than that, I wish more people noticed the overshadowing and metaphors used.

21. What is the best and worst writing advice you’ve ever received? No writing advice is bad. What may work for one may not be suited for other. You may not like what you’ve written today but you can always come back and edit it to your likeness.

22. Which one of your works would you most want to see turned into a film/television show? The Blood of Love for sure! Also a wip: inked memory aka ghost rider au

23. Do you write scenes chronologically or out of order? I write whichever scene I want to and then align them chronologically.

24. How do you handle criticism? Honest and genuine criticism is always welcomed, not spiteful J

25. What is the advice you would give to someone who is looking to start writing? Write because you want and not because you have to. Forcing it won’t do any good. It’s alright to not write when you don’t feel like it but don’t let that get you lazy.

26. What kind of feedback on your work always makes your day? Repeating myself here hehe but when readers notice the foreshadowing and metaphors I use, it brings the biggest smile on my face

27. Which fic ‘verse of your own would you most like to exist in? Which fic’s characters would you most like to befriend? The Blood of Love is a universe I’d love to exist in. Louis’ character from my estranged actor au and Harry from tbol really speak to me.

28. What do you always enjoy getting asks about/wish people would ask about more? Backstories about my characters and fic and my imagination. It runs wild lol

29. What has writing added to your life? How has it changed you? It’s helped me a lot to see from other people’s perspective and read body language in a better way.

30. Why do you write? It helps organize my thoughts and be more coherent in a way that imp not when speaking.

Any idea as to what could be the positive development in Jancy’s relationship in episode 6 of s3? Obviously there’s got to be one this time around too. At first I thought it’d be their first I-love-you’s, but now with the theory about the Byers moving away, I think it could be something bigger and related to that (in a positive way).

I mean it’s not obvious lmao just because ep6 of s1 and s2 was epic for Jancy doesn’t mean it has to be in s3 too, they’re not structuring the season around that I think, but yes they could keep up the tradition. I mean could be I love you’s, I think either them saying it for the first time will happen during the season, or they’ve already said it for the first time in the gap between seasons and so just say it all the time lmao. I think I’d actually would prefer the latter. And idk about the moving thing seems Jancy surely is occupied with other things during the season. But for what could happen in ep 6, lets look at the episode titles:

2 - The Mall Rats

3 - The Case of the Missing Life Guard

4 - The Sauna Test

5 - The Source

6 - The Birthday

7 - The Bite

8 - The Battle of Starcourt

Ep 1 and 2 will set up the season and kick the plot into gear. Theeeeen it gets really interesting. Ep 2 def has a double meaning of both the kids being “mall rats” and the actual rats. I wonder how the rats will figure, to me the first association is plague, infections, disease spreading which uh yeah, ties in to stuff… I wonder who the fuck Suzie in ep 1 is. Ep 3 obviously sounds like it has to do with Heather’s disappearance and the mystery around it I think is something Jancy gets involved in as they over the season investigate… something. Ep4 The Sauna Test makes me think of The Thing, a source of inspo for s3, there’s a famous scene in the movie where they using a hot wire tests blood samples to see who’s infected by the virus. I def think Jancy are the ones who first are onto that there’s a virus spreading and maybe it reacts to heat in some way which they discover and test (sauna -> the pool where a lot of shit goes down). Then Ep 5 The Source ofc sounds like to do with the virus too. Ep6 The Birthday I think has a double meaning, I think it’ll definitely be 4th July ie USAs birthday in this episode and then maybe some character’s birthday too or whatever. Ep 7 The Bite uh also makes me think of the virus spreading ofc and then ep 8 is self explanatory.

So what’s interesting to me is that I think you can see a clear connection between in the titles of ep 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 AT LEAST to be connected and it looks to me Jancy is very involved in the plotlines I think it references. I think they start their investigation early in the season then in the middle shit hits the fan and they link up with the kids who’s been doing their own thing and they work together. But it’s hard to tell what from the trailer could be from which episode, except that the Mayor with the 4th July celebration and carnival thing is ep 6 The Birthday, but we don’t know what Jancy is doing then, are the hospital scenes in ep 6? Or before? I think their around there. Think at least ep 7-8 is mostly based in the mall. You can try to map out some sort of timeline by the outfits, Nancy in the pink shirt and Jonathan in the brown shirt is at Bradley’s Big Buy with the kids getting supplies we know from BTS pics, and they’re still in those outfits at the mall then. Before that in the trailer we see Nancy in the purple dress and Jonathan in shirt and tie at the Hawkins Post then Nancy still in the dress but Jonathan in casual clothes when they’re with the kids in the house and when Jancy is in the hospital, and BTS pics showed them filming scenes outside with the kids in those outfits too. I think they’re in those clothes somewhere in the middle of the season when they link up with the kids and go to the hospital.

According to IMDb the person who works as stunt double for both Natalia and Millie is working in ep 5 and 6, but we don’t know if it means a stunt involving El or involving Nancy. She’s also listed in ep 7 but then only as Millie’s stunt double idk if that’s an oversight by IMDb or what. Ep 7 is also when Charlie has a stunt double. And I think the scenes of Jancy as well as Jake Busey in the hospital is from ep 5 because Bruce looks to be uh VERY infected in that shot and it’s Busey’s last episode, he stopped filming after and isn’t listed in subsequent episodes. So obviously some serious shit goes down in the hospital, in ep 5 to my belief then. So then ep 6 I don’t know, may very well (most likely even) be so that we didn’t see any Jancy ep 6 scenes in the trailer maybe because of their hugeness…

I'm seriously considering bringing in two muses, how would you guys feel about having a character with the fc of sabrina carpenter who is the child of two famous movie stars but changed her last name because she doesn't want to be a typical nepo baby and build off of her parents careers she wants to be her own person and work for what she has and another muse with the fc of savannah smith with a plot where she kind of lives a double life think hannah montana?

Congratulations, CASS! You’ve been accepted for the role of CORIOLANUS. I don’t think you realize how absolutely, completely, utterly over the moon I am to have Verona’s favorite princeling join our ranks! Cass, your application perfectly captured Coriolanus. It was effortless, simple, and had my heart aching. That’s what Cyrus makes people do, he has them on their knees for him simply because he bats his lashes and asks them to do so. I don’t know what I’m looking forward to more -- Cyrus reaping his vengeance upon all of Verona or simply obtaining retribution on his mother dearest. What drew you to this character? |  I was excited from the teaser, honestly, and the bio only strengthened my passion for Cyrus. I love how there are various features of his past that factor into who he has become (for example, spoiling being the source of rot rather than sheer anger or abandonment issues) and how those facets manifest themselves into a duality between what he shows the world and what he sees in himself.

What is a future plot idea you have in mind for the character?

1. Plotting: Recently back in Verona, Cyrus still has several plans to finalize and a handful that have yet to be created. This is largely going to be the connection phase of his character development, and it involves getting close to people, learning secrets, and gaining trust. Thus, this is the most immediate plot, and Cyrus will act in a manner of angelic innocence while planning precisely what to do with all the power he’s slowly gaining. After all, good things take time. 2. Conquest: The time to act upon plans. This is the beginning of Verona falling, of Cyrus pitting two sides against one another until there ceases to be loyalties and breeds only chaos. This is the time to sit back and watch the world bleed, to see his wounds reflect upon the place that bred them years ago. 3. Retribution: Coincides with conquest, but on a far more personal level. This is for the people who have personally wronged him – specifically Mother. This is when her empire falls and his own begins, when he proves that abandonment only results on barren ruins and the ghosts that wander them.   4. Order: More an aspiration of Cyrus’ than necessarily a plot idea, the drive to create order from the chaos. To raze to the ground and rebuild so that Verona is a pedestal beneath him. To have Verona at his feet simply because the city has forgotten how to stand. To rule.

What is your favorite place in Verona?

Cyrus’ eyes widened as he lowered his cup of coffee, obvious caught in half-sip. He waved his hand and reached for a napkin, dabbing his lips as he swallowed before exhaling as if he had endured a hard day’s worth of work.

“Sorry about that,” he said, straightening once more. “But my favorite place? Well, it certainly isn’t the streets. Too much trash, too little fresh air. I tend to be fond of the stores, but even they can get so crowded that they become more work than they’re worth. If I had to choose a single place, I would say the Cathedral. You can find peace there.” And every weapon that he would ever needed rested inside of it. God’s words protected an arsenal and his pews hosted an army that was just chomping at the bit for action, to tear someone else to shreds in the name of greater loyalty or personal gain. And she was here, reigning for only so long, only until her might collapsed around her, only until she was buried in her own rubble.

What does your typical day look like?

“A lot like this,” he answered, gesturing around him. A cup of coffee rested on the table (filled with precisely three sugar cubes) while shopping bags rested at his feet, sporting names from Armani to Valentino. They were so gaudy that they spoke for themselves, and Cyrus felt comfortable leaving his lie there while the truth rested in plain sight behind him. There was a bag, slightly more tattered than someone of his composure would usually carry, and it was filled with tattered journals and newspaper clippings. It housed all of his thoughts, written in Afrikaans and bursting with all the public details of the people who held Verona upon their backs. Old articles spoke of the “terrorist” attacks that the media was too scared to link publically to the mobs. An image of Verona as it now stood was created by mixing all the things in that pack, and Cyrus carried it with him everywhere. As soon as something new filtered through the streets, it was incorporated into the old-fashioned database, and that night, plans were updated, refined, articulated. The day was full of reconnaissance and the night was full of work.

What are your thoughts on the war between the Capulets and the Montagues?

“You waste no time in asking the heavy questions, do you? It’s admirable to be so forward.” Cyrus laughs like bubbles and his grin flashes like gold, falsely promising that everything is meant in good spirit without an ounce of vitriol. “I think that it needs to be resolved, and quickly. It’s tearing the city apart, and soon the whole of Verona will be noticing. Better to bring about peace before they try any other stunts.” He shook his head, falling into a mask of false sadness, of regret that he couldn’t have arrived prior to the bombing. He was the perfect image of a Capulet Emissary, ready to find peace and restore the order of the mobs.

Inside, it was a different story. This war was an opportunity just waiting to be exploited – and how no one had seized the chance yet was beyond Cyrus. A war like this would have never lasted long in South Africa without someone new rising from the ashes. There, people knew when the exploit weakness. In Verona, people seemed to be falling subject to it. It was time for a bit of foreign intervention in his hometown. Brought in to restore order to Verona, Cyrus was more than prepared to have precisely what he wanted: a new order under his regime.

In-Character Para Sample:

Cyrus Sloane always got what he wanted. From the time he was thirteen and requesting a pool table in his room to when he was eighteen and simply asking for Cape Town to bow at his feet, there was no resistance, no one was willing to tell him no. So imagine his surprise when he approached one of the clubs in Milan dressed to the nines, full of confidence, oozing sweetness – and was turned away.

“You’re not on the list, sir, and it’s a closed party.” The usher had left it at that, obviously fixating on a point just past Cyrus’ head as he spoke.

A lesser man would have thrown a fit then, or sidled up closer to the usher with intent in their fingertips, but both efforts would be fruitless. This was one of the most exclusive locations in the city, and settling into normal habits would yield little (if any) success. To make a scene would mean becoming memorable for all the wrong reasons, so Cyrus fell into an easy display of disappointment.

“Of course, I understand,” he said, stepping back and pulling a broken smile. He didn’t wait around for the usher to take pity, but instead turned back towards the line. It should only take five or so seconds, he guessed, and he began the countdown.

Five. A group of girls were cooing about how it was such a shame the list couldn’t be expanded. Four. A man was looking anywhere but him. Three. A couple fell into hushed whispered. Two. A child asked why this wasn’t like school, why everyone wasn’t invited. One.

“Hey.”

Cyrus glanced up, coming eye-to-eye with a woman approximately his age and perhaps dressed even better than he was. Careful to keep disappointment evident, he forced a small smile and hoped to look every bit like a kicked puppy. Something flickered in the woman’s eyes, and Cyrus knew that he was in.

“My date ditched me last minute,” she said, shrugging her shoulders as if she hadn’t been hurt by it at all. “Replace him, and I’ll get you in.”

Cyrus visibly brightened, going so far as to straighten his shoulders and erase all remain cracks of downtrodden deflation. “Shame he couldn’t make it, but I might need to write him a thank you note in the morning.” He slowly reached for the woman’s hand and, when she didn’t pull away, raised it to his lips and kissed her knuckles. “Answer enough?” he asked, smiling at her.

She pulled her hand away and flushed, falling into a modesty that could only be brought around by those surpassed by their forwardness. “Keep that up, and I’ll stop thinking of you as a replacement in no time at all.”

A laugh, and then they were walking into the club arm in arm. The usher glanced at him, surprised, as he stepped up to the line again, but this time the red velvet rope was pulled aside. Minutes later, he was alive with the wash of music and the thrum of elite company.

It was a golden rule of playing games with charm and will: there was always a way to get exactly what you wanted. Sacrifices were a thing of the past.
