I’m merging three asks, since you also asked for Bakugo, Denki and Midoriya and an animal quirk. How convenient, are y’all planning this or smth?

Bakugō Katsuki

He’s very skeptical around you when you first meet, and he’s also a little intimidated.

You are one of the few people that isn’t an extra in his path, you’re more like a foe.

The first time you two talk, he’s not rude, he’s trying to see if you have any ulterior motives. Cause y’know, you’re a snake and snakes in folktales and original sin and wahfjkfj (I’ve been reading The Amber Spyglass)

It absolutely astounds everyone else that he doesn’t look that angry.

He looks angry all the time

And then he feels sort of mesmerized by you.

The tables have turned, the snake is the one charming the human.

Bakugō blames it on your quirk, but in reality, mesmerizing isn’t part of your quirk at all, hopefully.

Most of his insults were about your speech impediment, given to you by your quirk.

Snakes are portrayed with dragged out s’es, therefore, you drag out your s’es.

Once you two started dating, somehow, Bakugō started figuring out things about you he hadn’t before, like your eyes.

The pupils would change from rounded to slitted depending on the time of day, and over time he picked up on how they looked at a certain time just by admiring your pretty face.

It got to the point when sometimes he would look at your eyes to look at the time.

When you realized that, you definitely teased him about it and Bakugō would just turn tomato red.

Speaking of blushing, Bakugō found your speech impediment sexy, especially when you would speak agonizingly slow to match with your s’es.

Pair that with dirty talking, ouch, this guy is turned on to the max.

He still sees you as a foe in his way to being number one, so he gets very competitive with you sometimes.

If you’re not a competitive person, I wish you good luck.

He’ll probably even ask you to spar sometime.

Bakugō is a total tsundere, which means his blushes are even redder than a normal person’s. Use that to your advantage, tease him about it while speaking slowly and he’ll get weak in the knee and all submissive.

He swears, mesmerizing is part of your quirk. You cannot convince him otherwise.

Kaminari Denki

Now I don’t know if your quirk gives you four feet, but Imma say you have two. For Midoriya I’ll do four feet.

Think Xayah or Rakan from League of Legends, but instead of bird legs, deer feet.

Like straight up fur with hooves, but you’re not all deer, you’re mostly human. Everything apart from your legs is covered in skin and like normal, but the nails of your hands are black and harder than normal nails, you have deer ears where human ears should be, and you have a little tail right above your butt.

He finds your quirk really cool, and from day one is planning to touch the fur on your legs. Sure, your ears and tail have fur on them too, but like. L E G S

He won’t walk over and ask to touch your fur bluntly, he wants to run his hands from your hooves to wherever the fur ends.

It’s his mission.

Plus he finds you really cute and attractive, so his mission is also to get you to fall in love with him, because he’s already falling as well.

Checking you out when you wear shorts while hanging out in the summer, discreetly he doesn’t want to seem like a creep although he is a pervert, he’s wondering where the fur ends

When you finally start dating, he practically begs you to let him touch your fur.

Like he’s even had dreams about this.

When he touches it, he’s in heaven. He can’t stop petting you.

He loves to cuddle with you because he gets to press up against the fur and feel it along his own skin.

He’ll have one hand on your legs and another on your head, massaging your deer ears.

It’s his fetish now, you can’t change that.

He loves being scented by you and loves it when other people notice the smell of you on him. He also loves your scent, and will probably have you scent a few of his pillows as well.

It’s another reason why he loves to cuddle with you, he’s up close with you and anywhere he puts his head, he can smell your scent.

He loves to see your tail wag, he thinks it’s a sign that you’re happy, even though you’re not a dog.

Midoriya Izuku

The moment he sees you, he’s asking all about your quirk.

From whether or not you run or gallop faster to whether or not you behave like a real deer sometimes.

He’s also captivated by your fur and how soft it looks.

You bet when you start dating he’ll ask to pet your fur.

He’s in awe as he pets it.

He notices your ears twitching or your tail wagging sometimes and figures out why on his own, once he does he writes it down on the notebook.

Cuddling was a little hard to figure out at first until he saw how you slept (think a dog but your top/torso part is slumped down) and then he figured he could just curl up at your side.

He loves sleeping like this because he feels so soft and warm.

Piggyback rides do not exist, he’s sitting on your back like you would on a horse, whether or not you get teased.

He’ll let you scent him or his stuff if you want to and he’ll get all shy and flustered when people remark on the scent of you on him but he’s proud of your relationship, so he won’t stop you.

He likes your scent too, so if that’s what you want to do then there’ll be no objections.

Expect him to be a shy blushy baby at the start though.

2020 July Update

Things have gone slowly... again.

The good news is that the game is now submitted to the console "authority" and it's entirely off my hands. Once it gets through the console "checking" process, it can get a release date and we can sprint towards release. Until then, it'd be at least a month's wait or more until I hear anything. Understandably, their checking process is impacted by Corona, so wait times are increased.

On my end, I was also slow to submit the game. I submitted it late late June, since I ended up spending 7 weeks fixing bugs (and not 2-3 weeks like I estimated in the last blog post). There were just SO many bugs - now squished, thankfully. Since this is a blog post, I'll talk about what kind of bugs I've been fixing.

The other thing that slowed down the submission process was simply due to unfamiliarity with how these submissions proceed. There were pages and pages of stuff to read, guidelines to follow, and legalese to wade through. It really made me wish I had a publisher to guide me through the process. But I was able to clear it with a couple days work. I had an impression that the submission process went like A->B->C->D, with no room for concurrency. Turns out I could have done steps B & C at the same time and sped things up by 2 weeks... So that's that. I'm taking that as a lesson for next time.

The Console Revealed

What is this console that I talk about so stealthily? So that this blog update isn't completely unexciting, I'll reveal which console I've been working on until now. Drumroll please!

It's Switch!

We actually got the Switch dev kit in late 2017. From my understanding, around this time in the USA, the Switch kit was quite hard to get for indies as it was just starting out and high in demand. So I was surprised that my application got approved. I didn't know it then, but the game would still need a few more years of development...

Tweaking performance and fixing bugs

Here you can see my "expert" playtest setup. Since the Switch is more powerful while docked, I needed to playtest it in handheld mode, so I could catch and profile any problem areas where the framerate was unsteady. The most common thing that caused framerate drops were areas that went overboard with lighting. For these areas, I'd tweak or swap out the lights with alternatives that looked similar while also being less computationally intensive. Maintaining 60 FPS is a must!

An old camera (Nikon D3100) trained at the screen recorded my playthrough and would let me rewind to any moment a bug occurred. It could only record in 10 minute chunks, so I'd have to repeatedly repress the record button. On the plus side, because it's so old the movie file sizes were small and convenient.

The number one bug that I tracked and fixed in the past two months was what I dub the "Gear Ring De-equip" bug. The Gear Ring functions as customizable shortcut keys for the player to map items and tools (see an old video demonstration HERE). Through regular use of the inventory, somehow the equipped items on the Gear Ring would be de-equipped. It was an elusive bug since the de-equip event would happen very quietly and you would only suspect something had gone wrong much later. By then, the trail had gone cold and you weren't sure if a de-equip had actually occurred or if the player had simply de-equipped the item themselves. Two other playtesters noted that something left the Gear Ring in their playthrough, but I dismissed them. "Are you sure you didn't just de-equip it yourself?" It was a bug that bred mistrust and discord. I didn't truly believe it until it happened to me...

Luckily, with the camera setup, I was finally able to track it. In the literal 67th video, I caught a live instance of the bug occurring. After which, it was all too easy to recreate the exact same inventory and gear ring setup and replicate it.

(With this exact item layout, combine the 2nd item with the 14th item... and viola! Gear Ring de-equip!)

After fixing this bug, I then proceeded to fix it 5 more times. Every time I fixed it, it would later reappear through a different mechanism.

Why do bugs like this happen? Underneath, there are two lists of items. Tools on the right and items on the left. Items can occur multiple times because they're consumable. Both lists start counting their indexes with the value 0. However, both items and tools co-exist on the gear ring. So to uniquely identify an entry you need both the item ID and the data index. Failure to check both data types resulted in bugs like the Gear Ring de-equip. Now throw in a bunch of item operations that can confuse the system. You can split items, combine items, swap items, or discard items. The more freedom you allow, the more ways there are for the system to trip up.

If you didn't get all that, that's alright. It was needlessly complicated. Imagine doing more and better and with less code and less bugs! Such a thing is possible if you start with the right design. I'm definitely taking notes here on how to design inventory systems for next time. In the meanwhile, I'm very confident I've squished all inventory related bugs.

Other bugs squashed and features implemented in the past 2 months include the end game arts not unlocking properly, collection percentages climbing beyond 100, stray doors floating in the sky, low HP sfx blaring when loading different files, balance tweaks on bosses, a max HP display when the menu is open - too many to count really! It was only after I fixed them all that I was confident enough to move forward with submitting the game. I apologize for the delay this will cause!

PC version back in progress

You may recall in the March 2020 update I talk about how in pursuing the Switch version, I unwittingly ruined the PC version. Well, since the game is "done" now and I'm waiting for it to go through the checking process, I've started working to reclaim the PC version.

And there is some good news to report. The PC version can compile again! Of course, it will need to have some work done, since it was late 2017 when I last had a functioning PC build.

The opening menu is broken, the underlying save file system needs to be updated, and the controls... oh Lord, the controls. Controls were probably the #1 factor in pushing me to pursue a console version first. There are just so many controller options. Even just the usual suspects are numerous: Xbox, Nintendo, Sony, Logitech, Hori, 8Bitdo, Steam...

One of the number one complaints received regarding the flash game (which was keyboard primarily) was that I didn't allow controller rebinding to start. It was then that I learned of the vast array of different keyboard types.

(Ever heard of an Azerty keyboard?)

I shan't make the same mistake twice! One of the things I'll definitely tackle is the Right/Left face button feud when it comes to which should one should be 'confirm' and which one is 'cancel'. I want to allow the player to choose which is their "YES" and "NO" preference and allow that to overlap other actions like Attack or Jump.

Even after control bindings are taken care of, some things just won't translate well. The right control stick is currently used to access the gear ring and for fishing. Keyboards have no right stick. Aiming the crossbow with a full 360 degrees of range is done with the left control stick - if keyboard only, would the crossbow simply be locked to the 8 cardinal directions? What about those tutorial prompts with button graphics (e.g. "Press 'B' to Jump"). If using the playstation controller, it'd need to be the CROSS symbol. How many button graphics are we gonna load into the text module? What if the player, mid-playthrough, decides to swap out controllers? Indeed, there are many issues to tackle where controls are concerned...

Perhaps I'm overthinking it because even some AAA games get this wrong (Dark Souls has 'B' as 'Yes' on Switch, and it's not remappable, which I find quite annoying). I've seen games on consoles where the controls wouldn't mention the console's controller at all but instead mention a mouse and keyboard. Or, if you remapped the controls, the tutorial prompts still showed the old control bindings, making for a confusing experience. I definitely want to do the controls justice, so this will take some time.

Ryan and Firana have been running a Phoenotopia discord since late 2017, which I promoted on this blog once. It's been a couple years and it turns out that the old discord link I promoted expired. Fan Arts

We have five new fanart submissions this time around from regulars and new alike.

Cody G. returns with this pair of sketches of Gail. One seeks to answer the question, "how is Gail so strong?" Cody's answer is that under her sleeves she's actually really buff! This might be the most ripped rendition of Gail yet. Also, in the right drawing, the letter 'E' kinda melds with her bat, making it look like a keyblade!

What if Gale was a Shrek character? A new artist, Samu Kajin, from tumblr answers that question with a rendition of Gail sporting ogre style antennae. Samu Kajin says she can be called "Gaek" or "Shrale". I like the poncho!

Shafiyahh returns with a pretty portrait of Gail. Unlike their previous digital pieces, this one was made with color pencils! I like how her hair blends pink and purple colors together, and this pattern is also present in the eyes. Reminds me of a certain character. And the eyes are so sparkly despite using color pencils! Major props!

Negativus Core also returns with this relevant image of Gail, masked and running, presumably from Corona. It gave me quite a chuckle! I like the angle and tilt of this run pose because you can see the sole of her foot - that's how you know she's at full sprint! A skillful blur localized to her left foot show's just the right amount of motion. Gotta love the robot's expression too!

A rare 3D art has emerged. Dany Q crafted this adorable figure of Gail that is as cute as a button! I like how well it translates the pixel character over to 3D, capturing the 3 stitches on her shirt and even catching her stray strand of hair. It kinda reminds me of a Wallace and Gromit character, so I can picture it moving and animating in that unique claymation style.

Next Time

I'm ~80% confident we can clear the Switch console checking process and drop the trailer with a release date before the next blog post. But once again, if things go slowly, you'll hear from us in 2 months...

In Morte, Aerternitatis Ch. 3: Myths & Legends

Annie and Paul’s house was understandably dark by the time she got there, but after her visit with Ethan she had to see them; had to see Annie. Ethan was holding something in, protecting someone, he had to be! It was true he’d been stand offish after Coleman’s murder and perhaps irate in the face of comfort, but never had she heard him talk about murder.

Certainly not when it came to his father.

Whatever reasons he had for implicating himself, she needed to tell Annie. Maybe something he said would make a lightbulb go off if they put their heads together. Plus Paul could make a mean midnight snack while they brain stormed.

She made her way from her car to the front door and knocked, looking around at the foliage as she waited. After a minute she knocked once more with a bit more force, confused as to why she couldn’t at least hear footsteps from inside the house. Just when she was about to start searching for the spare key, the door opened to reveal Paul in his pajamas.

“Well, well, well, look who the sandman woke up.” He teased.

“Very funny, Top Chef. Do you mind if I come in? I know it’s late, but-” Paul laughed at her flustered correction.

“Get your Russian rear in here, you know I’m teasin’.” She scoffed at his amused expression and made her way inside, “So what brings yah to our humble abode at this hour?”

“I was actually hoping to speak to Annie. Just stopped by to check on Ethan and- well, something isn’t sitting right with me. There’s just something in the way he spoke that had me on edge” She sniffed the air as they neared the kitchen, “Do I smell crepes?” Paul snorted at her sudden train of thought.

“As a matter of fact, yes! Was makin’ a little dessert for the lady of the house, but I suppose I can make another for our most special guest?” He declared while whipping up another round of batter.

“I don’t mean to impose…” Anya smirked.

“Now what kind of chef would I be if I didn’t make enough for everyone?” Paul smiled and picked up his tray after setting the batter onto the hot pan, “Keep an eye on that for a minute while I run this up to Annie, I’ll let her know you’re here.” And with a flourish, he was off and running.

Anya laughed at his enthusiasm and went to work with the crepe, no way she was gonna just sit and look at it. After the top had turned a slight golden color, she flipped it over and grabbed the cream and berries from where Paul had left them. After the pastry was done, she began to spread all the fixings evenly until a smashing of glass broke her from her concentration.

Looking up in alarm she called out for anyone who would answer. When she received no answer, curiosity and concern took over.

“Annie? Paul?” She called out once more as she made her way down the long hallway only to hear the sounds of what she could describe as panic quickening her pace at the sound of Annie’s call for Paul.

Finally making her way to the last small set of steps, she froze at what she saw.

Annie stood frozen in fear, her hair disheveled and her eyes wide as saucers at the scene before her. From what she could tell, Paul was struggling and gasping in pain; restrained by the tall figure closest to her. It was clearly another man, but her first thought was of the sheer height he displayed; height that offset extremely broad shoulders swathed in a long black coat. Shit, it didn’t matter what he looked like, she needed to think quick if she wanted to get him away from Paul.

“HEY!” She shouted in the sternest voice her inner babushka could muster. At her scream, Annie’s head turned to her, fear painted onto her skin.

“Anya! Oh my god, Anya!” Annie cried as the figure turned with Paul still in his grasp to face the red head.

By the look of the man before her, she couldn’t say she recognized him. High cheekbones and intense eyes that lay on a bed of dark hickory skin, lips full yet set in a grim line with hair as black as night.

Yeah, she’d definitely remember a face as powerful as his.

Paul continued to thrash in the strangers grasp, his hands clawing at the long arm encasing him. No matter how hard he struggled against the tall man, he never once flinched; attention fixated fully onto Anya while hers zeroed in on the small smattering of blood that dripped from Paul’s clothing.

“Let him go” She kept her voice stern yet lower than her previous panicked yell, taking a slow step forward to assert her presence. The man may have been a good few feet taller than her, but from where she stood atop the steps, her head came just up to the tip of his nose, “I said...let him go, now.” God, how she was keeping her voice so steady was a mystery. Even Vadim would be impressed.

The man’s head tilted very slightly in a way that would be easy to miss if she wasn’t keeping her gaze firmly on his every move. It was hard to tell if he was amused or irritated by her display of attempted intimidation, but all she cared about was getting him away from Paul. After that? Well...she’d get there eventually.

“I don’t know who you are and I don’t why you’re doing this, but I’d really appreciate it if you could remove your weapon from my friend.” Damn, since when could she make her voice go that low?

The man's lip quirked by centimeters before the arm that wasn’t holding Paul pulled back, causing him to let out another grunt of pain before being tossed towards Annie. The stranger turned his body fully towards her only then revealing his weapon, conveniently lodged onto where his hand should’ve been.

‘Well shit.’ She thought with a growing sense of dread and realization.

If this was who she thought it was then- no, no, no, no that was ridiculous. There was no way that this was the Candyman standing before her in living flesh. It had to be some sort of fanatic, a crazed worshipper of the myth. She was broken out of her musings as he took a long step towards her, her own foot going back out of reflex.

“So polite...even in the face of death itself.” His voice was composed of the darkest chocolate thrown into a rolling wave of thunder, deadly and deep in a way that wasn’t entirely unsettling. She felt herself take another step back as he came up the two small stairs, from the corner of her eye she saw Annie run back into her bedroom without him noticing as Paul lay against the wall still writhing in pain.

When he took another step towards Anya, a strange sense of pride built inside her; she would not be cornered into submission. Stopping in the middle of the hallway, she tilted her chin up in defiance of his presence. He didn’t stop until he stood directly in front of her, only a mere few inches separating them as she willed herself to breathe calmly.

His gaze felt as if it was somehow encompassing her entire being, transporting her to a different plane entirely. His human hand came up gently and grasped a strand of her hair in his fingers, letting it glide out of his grasp like the flow of water.

“Such fire radiates from within you.” He husked as his hooked hand came up to caress her cheek.

It took everything in her to remain still as the rusted metal still coated in Paul’s blood stroked her cheek as if to evoke a lover's caress, his other coming to encase her own hand entirely. She could feel his eyes roaming over every meticulous detail of her face as the hook came to cradle the back of her neck in its curve.

“Will you still burn so brightly when all is said and done?” His hook placed the slightest amount of pressure on her neck to the point where she was pulled forward; his nose almost touching hers, “I will relish the chance to find out.” He whispered as she felt herself fall into darkness, the sound of distant sirens going off around her.

In what felt like eternity was actually two minutes as she found herself looking up at what appeared to be a paramedic as well as Annie’s worried face.

“Oh Anya, thank god!” Annie’s hands cradled her face, “You’re okay, you’re both okay. Thank god!” Annie cried as more tears welled in her eyes. Wait, where was Paul?

“Paul? Is- is he-” Her soft request was cut off.

“The just took him out on the stretcher, he’s unconscious and they’ve stemmed the blood flow. I needed to make sure you woke up before I-”

“Annie Tarrant, you go after your husband right now. I’ll be fine with Miss-” She looked up at the paramedic.

“Barker, ma’am.” She supplied.

“-with Miss Barker, alright?” Annie seemed entirely unconvinced, “Annie it’s over, okay? I’m fine. Go to the hospital with Paul and I’ll come by the hospital in the morning with Vadim.” With one final smile from Anya, Annie nodded and hesitantly stood up. Anya closed her eyes at the sound of Annie’s hurried footsteps fading, the voice of Miss Barker cutting through.

“Think you can sit up, honey?” She nodded and scrunched her face at the headache that was forming, her hands forming into fists around the soft object in her hand-

Wait, what was that?

Sitting up fully she lifted her right hand up and open, her eyes nearly bugging out at what she saw. Another amaryllis lay cradled in her fingers, the same ones that had been encompassed by the stranger mere minutes ago.

“Is there anyone you can call to take yah home, cher? Unless you think yah need to head to the emergency room.” Miss barker’s voice came in gently.

“No, no emergency room. I can- I can call my brother to come get me.” Miss Barker helped her to stand and led her over to the phone in Annie’s bedroom. She smiled graciously at the paramedic before dialing Vadim’s number.

The line rang a few times before a groggy voice picked up.

“Whoever this is better have a damn good reason fo-”

“Vadim?”

A small pause and a second of shuffling was heard before he answered.

“Anya? Anya I- Anastasia, do you understand what time it is?!” She inhaled shakily and exhaled just as bad, something that didn’t escape her brother’s notice, “Anya? Kroshka, what is it? What’s wrong?” The pet name was the thing to finally set her tears off, the mask of confidence she put on for her friend falling.

“Vadim...I really need you to come get me,” Her voice was watery, “I’m at Annie’s-”

“Say no more, I’m coming now! Five minutes, dushen’ka!” He hung up abruptly as she was left to sit there with nothing but her tears from the night's events and two flowers from a myth.

All her life, Anastasia Fyodorov had been told fairytales and ghost stories by her family. Tales of long haired women in towers and men with bloody fingers that would appear in your closet were the ones Vadim would tell her most often, her mother sticking to the classic prince charming riding in on a white steed. All of them would keep her up at night contemplating possibilities, even the stories about goblins who stole naughty children from their beds. Such thoughts, such stories, so many possibilities that she could fantasize about as a child. Would she be the princess or the goblin? The knight or the dragon?

Those stories stopped coming when her family had fled Russia. By the time the worst of the situation was over her mother was more concerned about getting her family acclimated to the USA and ensuring their future than continuing their nightly ritual of story time.

Anya and Vadim had to grow up by the time their feet touched New Orleans.

The people were so different to those she was used to, so jubilant and bursting with life that she often felt as if she was walking on pure sunshine. The constant flow of music that swam up and down the streets almost every day became a comfort she never knew she needed. Loud trumpets and tubas with the dancing beat of a drum inspiring everyone to get on their feet and dance with the crowd. She had already been trained into the world of dance, but nothing like this.

And the food? Oh. The food.

Flavors she never knew existed took over their everyday dinner and enhanced her palette. Never before had she eaten anything super spicy or dripping in rich sauces, so used to chicken kiev and cabbage in broth. As well off as her family was she was taught from a young age that a dancer maintained a certain lifestyle and diet if they wanted to get anywhere. Chocolates and sweets were a rarity that only came when she achieved the expectations set forth for her.

Here, sweets flew in from left and right at the twins. Her mother often had to restrict the amount of sugar they were given for later days with how often they received it. She still made sure her children knew stranger danger was different from the kindness of friends; Elena Fyodorov was not raising any fools, after all.

No matter where they went or who they met, myths and legends were the most common part of their new lives. If you could conjure it up in your brain she had heard it, everything from voodoo kings of old to Marie Leveau herself; nothing was off limits.

And that included the tale of The Candyman.

“You’re sure you feel alright? Do you need more tea? What about a snack?” Vadim had been fretting over her like a mother hen since he’d gotten her in his car, not taking his hand from hers the entire time. He’d only ever seen her in distress five times in his life, only three of them had she cried.

Tonight had been one of those times and he never wanted to see the look of pure distress in those blue eyes ever again.

“I promise I’ll tell you all about it in the morning on our way to visit Paul, okay?” He kept eye contact with her for another few seconds before conceding to her request, pressing a kiss to her forehead as he rose from her bed.

“I’ll see you in the morning then?” He stopped at her light switch in question.

“In the morning.” She confirmed softly.

He nodded and closed the door gently, peeking back in after two seconds.

“I’ll be up if you need-”

“Vadim!”

“I’m going, I’m going!” He insisted and shut the door for a final time, finally leaving Anya to her thoughts in a safe place.

Anya sat there for a few minutes simply staring at her hands, twisting them in the blankets over and over again. What had happened tonight? What the fuck had happend tonight? One second she’d been ready to have a midnight snack with Paul and Annie and the next she’d been confronted with a threat to Paul’s life at the hands of a stranger.

‘Candyman…’

No, absolutely not. The dead could not walk and ghosts could not take corporeal form, he was a myth. A legend to frighten tourists. A man who had been long buried and left behind by the world.

The man from tonight had to have been a crazed follower who idolized the idea of Candyman, who had stalked her and Annie since the day they visited the shrine. What other explanation could there be for the flowers after all? Speaking of flowers…

She reached over for her bag at the side of her bed, pulling out the two red blooms. Normally, from her experience, men had always gifted women with generic flowers such as lilies or roses to express any kind of affection. No, nope, she wasn’t going to go to that head space. The man from tonight had been a stalker, a dangerous one, but a stalker nonetheless; something she would rectify come morning after seeing Annie and Paul.

She should throw them out, the flowers. Yet even as she held them something in her fought against the idea of doing so, almost as if she was throwing out a piece of herself. As strange as that sounded.

She shook her head and placed the flowers onto her bedside table, turning over and tucking the blankets around her shoulders in hopes of a peaceful sleep devoid of men with hooks.

At the first sign of morning, both the Fyodorov twins were up and about much to Vadim’s chagrin. He’d hoped Anya would sleep a few more hours so he could make her a proper breakfast before making their way to the hospital. Unfortunately breakfast was a piece of toast and a whole grapefruit for his sister before she descended into the shower, ignoring her twin's protest.

He knew she’d be speedy and opted for a bowl of oatmeal instead of his usual sausage links and eggs, part of him also wanting to be ready for when she told him about the previous night's events.

As he predicted, Anya was back downstairs within twenty five minutes; her hair thrown haphazardly into a bun with a yellow sundress that flowed down to her knees. He chewed the last bite of his breakfast before grabbing his keys and nodding his head towards the door.

She took the hint and followed his lead as he led her out of the house and back into his black jaguar. All was quiet until Anya turned on the radio to fill the silence.

Oh, yes. Oh, yes. Oh, yes. Now you makin' me proud, New Orleans. We are eatin' the meat raw. l tell ya what, l'm not goin' home till this is over. l'm on the air full time. Man, somebody bring me a hurricane. Somebody find this Kingfish a woman. Lent starts tomorrow, mes amis, and me, l want somethin' tasty to give up!

Vadim reached over to switch it off before addressing his sister.

“Anya, do you think we could...talk now? About last night?” He inquired gently. She laid her head back and blinked slowly.

“I went to visit Ethan at the police station, but something about what he was saying had me on edge. I don’t know what he said to Annie, but I had to see her- talk to her about Ethan” She pushed her seat back slightly in order to relax, “Paul was making Annie a snack and offered to make me something as well. ‘Course I said yes, I’ll never pass up his crepes.” She smiled at Vadim’s chortle.

“He was gone for a minute before I heard a struggle and went after him, but what I saw was far from what I was expecting” Her eyes went hazy as her brain went back in time, “There was a man I’d never seen before. He was- he was hurting Paul, stabbing him from what I could tell. Annie was terrified and I- I didn’t know what else to do, but I wanted to get his attention off of Paul.” She whispered.

“Anya-”

“I yelled to get his attention, just to get him away from them. He dropped Paul and came towards me, his hand was- it…” She stuttered over the memory, “He had a hook for a hand, Vadim” His head turned in alarm before putting his attention back on the road, “He was frightening in ways I couldn't tell you, so tall and broad with a voice that could make the devil shake.” Vadim’s hands tightened on the wheel as she continued.

“He grabbed me almost...gently, as if I would break if he even made one wrong move. And his eyes. His eyes…” She felt her throat catch as she thought of those passionate pools of molten chocolate, “His eyes were so fervent and intense that I thought he’d kill me with just one look, Vadim. He spoke to me briefly and pulled me in as if-” She stopped herself as a thought crossed her mind that hadn’t last night as Vadim looked at her once more. The light ahead turned red as he pulled to a stop, reaching over to grasp her hand.

“As if what?” He gently probed. She squeezed his hand as if for courage.

“-As if he was going to kiss me.” The light turned green as Vadim’s brow furrowed, his one hand borderline strangling the wheel.

“And then?”

“Everything went black. By the time I came around he was gone and Paul was being taken to the hospital.” She didn’t say anything about the flowers, Vadim was already mad enough without her adding stalking to the fire.

The rest of the ride was silent and maybe that was for the best, she could tell Vadim was already irritated enough. Not at her, but at the knowledge of what had transpired against his sister and her friends; how he wasn’t there to help. He’d always been that way as irrational as she’d told him it was, after all, how could anyone expect someone to be there to help at all times? That simply wasn’t logical and she wished he’d see that.

After another thirty minutes, the twins found themselves taking a brisk pace into the hospital in order to track down the Tarrant’s. Just as they turned the corner, a familiar voice had them picking up the pace.

“For the last time, I need to know where my daughter and son in law are! Is that a good enough reason?” Octavia Tarrant’s tone held no room for arguments as the nurses before her tried to maintain a sense of calm.

“Ma’am, I can’t help you without a name-”

“And I told you it was Tarrant! Annie and Paul Tarrant! Tarrant. Is that clear enough?” Anya picked up the pace before Octavia decided to start raising hell.

“Mrs. Tarrant!” At the sound of Anya’s voice, Octavia’s entire demeanor changed as she turned around in relief at the sight of the twins.

“Mom, Vadim...would you mind going in ahead of us? I just need to speak to Anya for a second.” Vadim knew most of what had transpired the previous night and caught on quickly, turning to Octavia to offer his arm.

“Well Madame, would you mind if i accompanied you?” His voice had dropped two octaves lower and made Octavia chuckle in a flustered fashion.

“How could I resist such an offer?” She giggled and grasped his arm as they made their way into Paul’s room. Annie grabbed Anya’s hand and led her down the hall into the women’s room, releasing it to look into every stall inside.

“Annie what-”

“This is all my fault, Anya! It’s all my damned fault!” Her eyes began to well up again, “I didn’t think anything of it when I did it, I just thought I could make the kids feel better!” Her words hitched in her throat, rejecting Anya’s touch with a shake of her head.

“Annie, I need you to tell me what you’re talking about.” Anya crossed her arms to keep herself from comforting the distraught woman.

“The day we left the shrine, Paul dropped me off for work. Drew had gotten into a fight with Matthew, but I was able to break it up and figure out what was going on” At Anya’s nod she continued, “Matthew has been...very enamoured with the Candyman myth as of late, drawing him and acting as if he knows- well, knows what he’s feeling.”

Annie leaned on the sink, her eyes drawn to the faucet.

“He got the other kids freaked out about it and I just wanted everyone to calm down! I would never have- if I would have known I-” Anya touched her friends back in concern.

“Annie, breathe it’s-”

“I said his name…” She whispered so faintly that Anya couldn’t understand.

“Honey, I’m gonna need you to speak-”

“I SAID HIS NAME!” Annie yelled, her hands clenching the sink, “I looked into the mirror and said his name five times…” She felt her friend's hand recoil from her back.

“...Whose name?” Anya had a feeling she knew where this was going.

Annie looked up in the mirror at Anya’s reflection and felt her face crumble at the amount of concern she saw. Drawing in a deep breath, she turned around slowly and whispered her answer so softly that Anya had to lean in.

Last time we talked about what happened and when, but now we're going to get into the how. How do DPS meters and tera-proxy work? How even do the skill prediction and other things work? I'll be answering that in this installment.

First, a disclaimer. This post analyzes in detail the alteration of game behavior. Many places will consider this "discussion of cheats, hacks, or exploits". If you want to post a link to this post anywhere, make sure it follows any submission rules there about this sort of topic.

If it's so sensitive and controversial, why am I still posting it? Because I would argue this post has nothing new to offer to anyone with malicious intentions. Remember, TERA has been out for 5 whole years already, and there's plenty of underground communities dedicated to illicit activities. Plus, the recent storm has only brought even more attention to tera-proxy. The proxy, along with ShinraMeter, CasualMeter, and Alkahest, are all open source. Everyone can look at the code, and anyone with the technical knowledge and ability to do bad things would have already figured out what we're doing by now.

First, we'll talk about how TERA's networking works normally. Then we'll look at how we use that knowledge in a packet sniffer (such as Shinra), and then we'll extend that idea onto tera-proxy. Now, tera-proxy does nothing on its own; everything it does comes from plugins, or "modules". So to round it all off, we'll talk about how tera-proxy modules work at the end.

If you'd like, you can skip all the way down to the tera-proxy sections. Everything above is not strictly necessary for those, so that's going to cut your reading time by a decent chunk.

Throughout this post, I'll be adding a number of charts and diagrams. Some may be helpful, and some may not. If you're not sure how to read a diagram, don't fret too much. They mostly reiterate what I've already written about, so you're not missing anything if you just don't get it.

How TERA Talks to the Server

When you click the big "PLAY" button on the launcher, or when you back out to server select, TERA sends a request to a specific website to get a list of game servers. From there, it can do things like log you into the last server you played on based on what EME's account server said it was, or it can show you the server list.

Either way, once a game server is selected, the TERA client tries to connect to it. I'm going to assume the vast majority of people are familiar enough with the concept of "server" and "client", but here's a diagram anyway, which will serve as a convenient reference point for the various approaches we'll be taking later on.

In particular, we'll be zooming in on exactly what's going on in the "Client" and "Server" bubbles here, and then we'll be taking a step back to look at how other programs fit into this.

After the client establishes a connection to the server, they do something that's called a handshake; the client and server talk to each other to make sure that this is indeed for a TERA connection and they are ready, and then they share their encryption keys.

I assume most people are at least familiar with the concept of encryption, but we're going to want to define a few more terms just to be sure we know what's going on. Remember, this is going to be a very simplified explanation, so don't expect it to be 200% accurate. Just enough to help everyone understand the concepts.

Let's choose a very simple example. Let's say you want to encrypt a message like "hello". There's lots of ways (infinite, actually) to go about doing that, so we're going to need to pick a specific encryption algorithm. Let's make one up right now.

Start with a number n—for instance, 2. Then, for each letter in the original message, you turn it into the nth letter after it, and then increase n by 1 and go to the next letter. So, in this example:

You see "h". Since n = 2, you turn it into "j" (h → i → j) and make n = 3.

You see "e". Since n = 3, you turn it into "h" (e → f → g → h) and make n = 4.

... and so on, until you end up with "jhpqu".

You know how we picked the starting number of 2? That's called the key. You can sort of think of it like a password; if you know the correct key, you'll know how to correctly decrypt the result, but if it's wrong, all you get is meaningless data.

But the starting number wasn't the only thing that mattered. Our encryption also had to keep track of what n was at each step of the way. That's the encryption state. This isn't something you're supposed to modify and play around with yourself, but it is important. For "hello" with a key of 2, the last three letters came out to "pqu". If we skip the "e" and try "hllo", then the last three letters become "opt". Even though we started with the same letters, we got a very different result because we had a different encryption state when we reached them.

So, with the definitions of encryption key and encryption state out of the way, we can get back to how the client and server talk to each other.

The two establish a connection and send their their encryption keys to each other. (In this case, the encryption algorithm requires two keys.) After that, they both hold a copy of their encryption states: one state for themselves, and one state for the other. Why two states? Because this is a "duplex" connection—data goes both ways. The client can send stuff to the server, and the server can send stuff to the client, and both of those directions needs its own encryption.

The rest of the connection is then encrypted. So it's important that both the server and client are tracking the correct encryption states. As they process incoming data, they have to decrypt it, which updates the incoming encryption state. As they send outgoing data, they have to encrypt it, which updates the outgoing encryption state. If either side gets either state wrong, you end up with garbage values and eventually a disconnect.

In fact, if anyone tries to add, modify, or delete a single thing in the encrypted data as it gets passed between the client and server, the decryption will go into a wrong state and you'll never be able to recover. You'll read garbage values until you realize something isn't going right. TERA chalks it up to a disconnect and boots you right back to server select.

To the casual eye, it might sound pretty fragile, so why don't you disconnect very often at all? How is it handling when you receive data in the wrong order, or have packet loss and drop packets like the bass at an EDM concert? Well, the short answer is that you can't. TERA's network connections use something called TCP. Here's a quick summary: TCP is built to be reliable, error-free, and in-order. If you receive something, but you know there was something sent before it and you never got that, you have to ask the other side to resend the previous message and wait for it before you can continue.

TCP means that as far as TERA is concerned, packets are never received out of order, packets are always correct, and you can never miss one (unless you get totally disconnected, in which case you obviously miss all). That also explains some lag spikes. If you have packet loss, the client has to play catch up, and it can't go forward while it eagerly awaits retransmission of every single packet that it missed. All the server can do is resend those and everything else that happened while trying to recover, and for some connections that can snowball hard.

So now we know how data is encrypted, transmitted, and decrypted between a TERA client and server, but what exactly is being transmitted? To answer that, we'll need to talk about protocols.

A protocol, in terms of network communications, is a specific format, or a set of rules, for how to transmit information. We know one already, actually; TCP is a very heavily used protocol that dictates how tons of packets are being sent over the internet on a daily basis. In fact, you're most likely viewing this post thanks to a TCP connection. A TCP packet can hold any arbitrary data, but for our analysis on TERA networking, it holds TERA's network data. That data follows BHS's own custom protocol.

As I go into the specifics of the custom protocol, let's take a minute to think about why we even need a protocol. As humans, natural language is easy for us to use and process. "Move my character one step forward" is very clear to an English speaker, but computers aren't humans, and while it's a bit of a cliche to say that computers "speak in ones and zeroes", the idea of it should be enough to show why an English sentence just won't cut it. We need to represent that same idea in a way that's compact and efficient for a computer to process.

Under this custom protocol, we can construct what I personally call a "message" (think "sentence"). Each message starts with two numbers. The first number says how long the message is (as in, "how many letters?"), and the second is an opcode—short for "operation code", which defines what operation to perform. Like taking a step forward. Any additional data will depend on the opcode. For player movement, you'll want to send details like your speed and position in game, so for the message that uses the player movement opcode, there's a very specific order and format in which to put information like your in game position and other things like movement type.

So, if that's how we can construct a valid message, then the game's protocol is comprised of the rules for what opcodes mean and how to format and order additional data and all of that stuff.

Notice that I switched from "packet" to "message", even though you probably only ever heard about packets. Semantically speaking, they're different; you may want to send two actions happening at the same time, in which case you can just bunch them together under the same TCP packet. Other times, a message is just too large and you don't want to make the packet too big, so you have to split it across multiple TCP packets. But for the most part you'll see people just calling them "packets" because it's a lot less ambiguous than "message", which could also refer to things like chat messages or system messages. So from now on, I will likely use the two terms interchangeably.

Now you know pretty much all there is to know on how TERA's network communication works. One side, client or server, constructs a message following the rules set by TERA's protocol, then it gets encrypted and sent over, where it's decrypted and read according to the protocol.

Packet Sniffers and DPS Meters

The first type of publicly released mods that wanted to look at this network data used a method called packet sniffing. A packet sniffer is able to read (and only read) the data that's being transmitted over a network, and often has tools to help analyze the packets.

So we set up a packet sniffer to read the data over your net connection, but remember: TCP is a standardized and widely known protocol while BHS's TERA protocol is custom made, so our packet sniffer can only help us as far as TCP. Even then, we're seeing much more than what the server and client see. We're seeing all the other stuff that happens from TCP: packets being resent and packets being received out of order. So we have to do all this work of figuring out how to recombine the packets that we're seeing so that we can most accurately reconstruct what the server and client are sending and receiving. Sometimes, rarely, you get it wrong, and everything breaks because our encryption and decryption depend on their state, and if we mess up reconstructing a message, we end up with an incorrect encryption state. (If your meter sometimes occasionally breaks, this may be why.)

But let's assume that, as is the case the vast majority of the time, we got it right. We're reading the packets properly—but they're still encrypted! Well, that's easy to handle. We know how the handshake looks, and how the server and client exchange encryption keys, so we can just recreate the same encryption states and we're ready to decrypt.

We've rebuilt the packets being sent and we've decrypted their data, so now we're down to BHS's custom protocol.

As mentioned, each message under this protocol always begins with the message length and the opcode. That's convenient for us, because if we see an opcode that we don't care about, we can totally skip ahead to the next message. Unfortunately, opcodes generally change on every major TERA patch, and that's why you need to update meter and proxy. The first thing we do here is proxy the server list, so when the client requests it, that request goes to us first. We ask the real server list what's up, and when we get the reply, we can change whatever it says before handing it back to the client. Like adding an extra entry called "Mount Tiltrannas" that points to a game proxy server.

So the game client got this new server list and now it wants to connect to this special server we've added. We know the connection handshake, and we know that the real client and real server are going to exchange encryption keys which we can save and forward very easily.

Since the proxy talks to both the client and server, it handles two connections. Each connection has two ways data can flow (towards or away from the proxy), so that means we now have four encryption states to take care of: the two between client ↔ proxy and the two between proxy ↔ server.

But if we do our job right, both sides are oblivious that there's even anyone in between them, because as far as they're concerned, the data they're receiving is getting decrypted properly. Everyone's happy.

Unlike packet sniffers, we're not just eavesdropping anymore. This data from both sides is being sent straight to the proxy and only the proxy. It's our job to decrypt according to one side, re-encrypt for the other side, and then send it to its intended destination. Since we can do that, we can also do things like modify the data, adding and removing things at our leisure because now we have control of the encryption states.

Besides everything already mentioned, there's one more thing that distinctly set tera-proxy apart from DPS meters.

tera-proxy doesn't have a specific focus like meters have with DPS. We no longer care only about meter-related packets anymore. That's what modules are for. Each module essentially says, "Hey, when you see any of these particular packets, I want you to tell me the data it contains and then I want you to do these things." This is called a "hook". If you hook C_PLAYER_LOCATION, then when tera-proxy sees a C_PLAYER_LOCATION packet, it reads it and converts it to a format that's much simpler for a programmer to use.

Again, let's look at some old diagrams:

Maybe you've noticed it by now, or maybe you haven't.

It took well over 3,000 words and plenty of graphs and charts and diagrams to explain how TERA's whole networking system works. Then we described tera-proxy modules in just a handful of sentences.

There's a reason for that—and it's not because you learned everything you needed to know.

The real reason is that you didn't need to know in the first place. That's the proxy's blessing and curse.

In our example, we wanted to get a C_PLAYER_LOCATION and modify it. We can do it in three lines of code. We never had to bother ourselves with the details of the encryption, the protocol, the proxying, or any of that.

There's more. Most languages require the use of a compiler; you write code, give it to the compiler, and you get back "machine code" that you can run. For tera-proxy, I use a language called JavaScript. It's an "interpreted language", which means it doesn't need compiling for someone to run it. Actually, you've probably already been using JavaScript quite a lot; it's the language used to make webpages interactable, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a single website that doesn't use a single line of JavaScript.

Since we don't need to compile anything, anyone can just open up a text editor, write some module code in JavaScript, run the proxy, and it just works.

Does that sound very powerful? It should. Can you make really cool stuff with it? You bet. Can you also cheat really hard with it?

Unfortunately, yeah. But that discussion is reserved for part 3.

Most modules will be rather self-explanatory (when a cutscene happens, hide it from the client and instantly send the skip packet; when a Vanguard is completed, instantly send the accept rewards packet; etc). But a lot of people are up in arms about the skill prediction stuff, so it's time to get into a little more detail about that.

Skill Prediction

First, let's pick some arbitrary ping. Say 200 ms. That means you sent a "ping" packet to the server at some time, and when you received a "pong" packet back from the server, it had taken 200 ms. For now, it will be sufficient to assume that this means the time it takes for a packet to reach the other side was 100 ms, so when we sent something and got something back, it took twice that time, or 200 ms.

There's only one thing in TERA that happens on your screen as soon as you press a button, and that's movement. This is a technique called client-side prediction. It's still going to take 100 ms for the server to receive your new position, and then half of everyone else's ping for them to see it, but at least on your own client, you see when you step forward or back instantaneously. It feels smooth and fluid.

That's just about the only thing client-side predicted as far as we're concerned.

What does that say about casting skills? Well, when you press the button, your client doesn't actually do much of anything yet. It sends a request to do it to the server, who verifies a number of things (Was it off cooldown? Was it on a valid target? Are you not stunned or slept?) and then sends back an acknowledgment along with other information like the attack speed. Only then does your client animate that skill.

Let's ignore chain skills for a moment. We've casted our first skill, but now we want to cast the second. We can't do that while we're already in a skill, so we have to wait for the first skill to finish animating.

But our first skill already took 200 extra ms to start.

And then we have to wait another 200 ms for the server to acknowledge our second skill.

That's what's colloquially known as "ping tax", and you pay it on most everything you do in TERA.

Lockons are extra awful in this department. Entering the lockon pays ping tax, acquiring a lock pays ping tax, and then firing the skill pays ping tax.

And Rapid Fire? All right, let's look at this. Let's say you've got a total of an arbitrarily chosen 120 + 60 = 180 attack speed, which translates to 150% animation speed. In fact, it doesn't matter how much attack speed you get. In this case, you'll always take 1.2 seconds longer to reach the seventh hit of RF because you have to pay that ping tax six times no matter what. That's disgusting.

(As an aside, for someone living very close to the servers with the luxury of about 30 ms ping, their RF time comes out to 6 × 230 ms = 1.38 seconds. That's only 0.18 seconds (180 ms) more than the perfect case scenario—less than the time we'd be waiting for our very first hit at 200 ms ping. If your ping is already very low, there's very little to gain, especially because you have to balance those millisecond bonuses with just how much desyncing you're going to be dealing with. I explain that in more detail below.)

So how do we fix it?

Well, we can't get rid of latency. It'll always take 100 ms for the server to receive anything you send.

But what we can do is try our best to eliminate the ping tax on the client. When you try to cast a skill, skill predictors are really just tera-proxy modules that predict the acknowledgment reply from the server and send it to the client.

You say you want to cast Rapid Fire? The predictor instantly replies that you did it. That's a whopping 0 ms on the ping tax. No need to wait for the server when you can just assume it was successful.

Sometimes, we get it wrong. There's a lot of things the client doesn't check before sending the server a request to cast a skill, so skill predictors have to be checking if you're stunned or slept or knocked down, if you have appropriate prerequisite buffs to cast something, if you have glyphs or buffs that alter a specific skill's attack speed... If we guess any of those wrong, you get desynced. Your client might still animate it, but it might be too slow, or too fast, or it wasn't actually cast at all. Damage doesn't happen, but you're still stuck in animation.

The three main skill predictors, each written by a now banned developer, handles things very differently. Mine had lockons for lockons and fast-fire to focus solely on three skills (Rapid Fire, Burning Heart, and Burst Fire), both of which made no attempt to resolve desyncs.
