Of Odium - Seeing the Future Meta

I’M BACK AND I’M READY TO THEORY/META ON RENARIN. BECAUSE WE ALL DESERVE THAT IN HER LIVES. The TL;DR is: Renarin Kholin is basically Atium against Odium and I’m hype. 

THE EVIDENCE: 

So everyone on Roshar is fairly anti-clairvoyance, especially Vorinism, wisdom of the Heralds and all that jazz. Seeing the future: bad news. It’s of Odium. But I think that it is LITERALLY of Odium. As in, any instances of foresight people have come from Odium/are drawn from Odium/are what Odium sees/believes is going to happen. 

Please consider: 

“Voidbinding is a dark and evil thing, and the soul of it was to try to divine the future.” TWOK, 18, Highprince of War

Kadash tells Adolin this when he asks about Dalinar’s visions (as they don’t realise at this point he isn’t seeing the future). Odium is the soul of voidbringers (whether human or parshendi) and the soul of that is future sight. 

Moelach is very similar to Nergaoul, though instead of inspiring a battle rage, he supposedly granted visions of the future. In this, lore and theology align. Seeing the future originates with the Unmade, and is from the enemy. —From Hessi’s Mythica, page 143 OB, 101, Deadeye

Odium grants power to the Unmade, and one such power is the ability to see the future. (We be heavily side-eyeing at all of the Death Rattles, yes we be). But glimpses of the future are from Odium. He provides them. 

“They [the Fused] knew,” Adolin said. “They led us here with that cursed vision.” “Be wary,” Shallan whispered, “of anyone who claims to be able to see the future.” “No. No, that wasn’t from him!” Kaladin looked between them, frantic, and finally turned to Syl for support. “It was like when the Stormfather … I mean… OB, 115, The Wrong Passion

Poor Kaladin got played like Hoid’s flute. Dalinar being in danger was a true glimpse of the future, but it was what Odium gave to Kaladin in order to lure him, Adolin, and Shallan to the Oathgate at Theylen City, where an ambush was waiting for them. An ambush they only survived because Dalinar pulled off the unthinkable/unanticipated. 

Hoid was the one who warned Shallan to be wary of anyone claiming to be able to see the future. Odium can plant visions of the future onto people to have them do what he wants/to manipulate them. 

Renarin: 

Renarin sees things that turn out to be untrue:

For he saw the future. He saw his father in black armor, a plague upon the land. He saw the Blackthorn return, a terrible scourge with nine shadows. Odium’s champion. “He’s going to fall,” Renarin whispered. “He’s already fallen. He belongs to the enemy now. Dalinar Kholin … is no more.” OB, 118, The Weight of it All

But, importantly, he sees things that turn out to be untrue, but he sees things Odium also thought would happen. 

Honour tells Dalinar that: 

The figure squinted at the horizon. “I cannot see the future completely. Cultivation, she is better at it than I. It’s as if the future is a shattering window. The further you look, the more pieces that window breaks into. The near future can be anticipated, but the distant future… I can only guess.” TWOK, 75, In The Top Room

The window breaking imagery is repeated in Renarin’s views of the future, which appear to him as different stained glass window panels. Seeing the future is, as one might imagine, not an infallible process. 

We know that Renarin was responsible for the countdown to the Everstorm - something that Odium, via voidspren, orchestrated and made happen. It was a date he knew/planned for.

Renarin’s visions are wrong about two things: firstly that Jasnah will kill him, rather than let him live bonded to a voidspren. Secondly: that Dalinar will turn to the enemy’s side. 

This is clearly what Odium believes as well. He sets up the battle, with Amaram’s troops possessed and turned against their former allies, Dalinar at their head. Dalinar, who he has honed for years via the Thrill to be his Champion, the Champion with nine shadows. 

He lured Kaladin and the others into an ambush, as noted, where they would have definitely been killed, if not for Dalinar’s intervention. 

Odium was wrong about Dalinar; and so Renarin’s vision, from Odium, was also wrong. 

I think, in seeing the future, the person sees what Odium sees/what he expects to happen. It’s noted that Honour and Cultivation can both see into the future as well, with varying degrees of ability. 

However, something I find interesting is this: 

“People who claim to be able to see the future, living off people’s hopes. Your society was right to forbid them. The spren do likewise… OB, 97, Riino

Azure tells Shallan this. We know very well that Vorin society condemns visions of the future. But I find it interesting that the spren do also. This implies to me, perhaps a little tennuously, that though Honour and Cultivation can see the future, too, Odium somehow has control/influence over it now, to the point that the sentient spren also forbid divining the future. 

Though all of them have some relevance to precognition, Moelach is one of the most powerful in this regard. His touch seeps into a soul as it breaks apart from the body, creating manifestations powered by the spark of death itself. —From the Diagram, Book of the 2nd Desk Drawer: paragraph 15, WOR, 82, For Lit

This sounds very similar to what Ruin does. He can seep into the minds of people via cracks in their soul - pierced either by hemalurgic spikes, or by something that causes instability and madness. Moelach, similarly, infiltrates people when their souls are fractured/damaged at the moment of their death. 

I wonder if Odium, similarly, can give people visions of the future, inserted via breaks in their Spiritweb, to manipulate them. 

The most interesting point of this, and what I’ve kind of been driving towards a bit, concerns this little gem of information: 

Taravangian saw that the words were blacked out into eternity starting from this point on his wall. As if something had happened here. A ripple in what Odium could see...

At its root, a name. Renarin Kholin. 

OB, 122, A Debt Repaid

This strikes me as the effect that’s produced when two mistborn burn atium at the same time. Both of them can see a little in the future. In being able to see what their opponent can do, that changes what they would do in response, which then changes what their opponent would do etc etc. 

I think Renarin either has, or at the very least has the potential to, understand that what he sees is what Odium sees. Even if he’s being fed his visions by Odium, that can give them an advantage, a window into not specifically what might happen in the future, but what Odium thinks might happen in the future. That could give them a distinct advantage. 

It also potentially ties into Sja-Anat’s upcoming narrative. 

Sja-anat is an Unmade that corrupts spren - she corrupted the Oathgate spren in Kholinar, she says, so that they would not work properly when Shallan tried to activate them. 

However, though once the most feared of the Unmade, at least as far as the Radiants were concerned: 

Of the Unmade, Sja-anat was most feared by the Radiants. They spoke extensively of her ability to corrupt spren, though only “lesser” spren—whatever that means. From Hessi's Mythica, page 89, OB, 97, 

It appears that Sja-anat has now learned how to corrupt far more powerful spren - like the spren of the Oathgate and also, presumably, Glys. 

“Glys had once been a different kind of spren, but something had changed him, corrupted him.” OB, 117, Champion with Nine Shadows

It seems unlikely to assume that something other than the Unmade that specifically corrupts spren has corrupted this spren. 

“Radiant, the thing said, mouthing the words. My name is Sja-anat. And I am not your enemy.  [...]

“What are you?”

They calll me the Taker of Secrets, the figure said. Or they once did. 

“One of the Unmade. Our enemies.” 

We were made, then unmade, she agreed. But no, not an enemy! The figure turned humanlike again, though the eyes remained glowing white. It pressed its hands against the glass. Ask my son. Please. 

“You’re of him. Odium.”

The figure glanced to t he sides, as if frightened. No. I am of me. Now, only of me. OB, 84, The One You Can Save

Ooh, Unmade switching sides!! Maybe. Call me gullible (Taryn, ur gullibe), but I...Kind of believe her?? She warns Shallan not to use the Oathgate, as Odium had her touch it in order to corrupt the spren and make them kill them when they try to transport. 

She instead doesn’t kill them, but also doesn’t take them back to Urithiru, instead abandoning them in Shadesmar. But hey they’re not dead! 

Committing to the whole ‘Sja-anat actually DOESN’T want to serve Odium anymore and is trying to help you guys out’ theory, we’re just going to double-down on it and say: 

If you’re a crafty, thousand year old Unmade who just wants to belong to yourself and is tired of serving Odium who is, let’s be frank, A Bastard, and you want to fuck with his plans but like, sneakily, how do you do it? 

Do you, perhaps, corrupt the spren of a young Truthwatcher so that he now has access to visions of the future. Theoretically this gives Odium a spy, and a willing victim onto whom he can plant visions of the future and manipulate him to act in different ways. 

It would, however, theoretically, like counter-burning atium, give Renarin an advantage as well. If he can learn to use what he sees against Odium. 

Sja-anat’s “son” is likely Glys, though Renarin says that Glys has claimed he can’t remember his corruption, as it happened before they bonded, and spren memories are fuckerdly before they’re bonded. But they usually recover, and come back. I wonder what Glys will remember of his ‘mother’ if given the chance... 

TL;DR: Renarin is Atium, Sja-anat honestly wants to fuck Odium, Glys is her son who is her way of helping, Odium is going to get fucked by underestimating Renarin Kholin and I WANT IT.

some thoughts on Words of Radiance

I’ve finished Words of Radiance two days and WHOOO. Things just got more interesting and complicated. 

I feel like it would become repetitive if I say how amazing Brandon Sanderson’s writing and world-building are every time I talk about the Stormlight Archive books, so I’m just gonna list some of my thoughts here. 

● Adolin and Kaladin’s new formed bond - after Kaladin helped Adolin in the duel their relationship have definitely changed. I mean?? Adolin put himself in prison just because he thought it was unfair that Kaladin stayed there. There is much more of Adolin that we didn’t see in the Way of Kings and I’m sure there are more to be unveiled, which brings me to the next point:

● Adolin has a good head on his shoulders and is more than capable of thinking on his own, without Dalinar influencing him or anything.          

The fact that he believed Kaladin when the latter told him the truth about Amaram just further confirms it.

● Shallan and Kaladin - I loved the whole part of Shaladin being stuck in the chasm and I like how they came to some kind of understanding. 

Kaladin is definitely starting to have a crush on her, but imo they wouldn’t work as much as Shadolin do. I’ve thought about this for a while, but I think Kaladin needs a person who can go head on head with him, and I don’t mean just physically but also mentally. Did that make any sense? 

A person who can challenge Kal in combat but also in knowledge. Someone who can get him out of his head, or when he thinks he’s alone and responsible for everything and everyone. But at the same, they should also be able to be someone who can be there for him when he’s feeling depressed and know when to give Kal the space he needs. I hope Kal finds someone who can make things better and brighter like what Tien used to do for him. 

● Moash - DAMNATION. STORMFATHER CURSE YOU, MOASH. I still can’t get over his betrayal. There was an obvious trust and respect between the two of them. More than that, Kaladin thought of Moash as his friend. On one hand, I understand why Moash wanted to have his revenge, but I wish he just listened to Kal and trusted him more. It just hurts so much, especially when Kal asked him which one was important, him or his revenge. 

What makes this even more frustrating is that it seems Moash is not completely aware of the real plans of Graves and the Diagram, which I’m still not sure what is about. It doesn’t also help that Moash actually felt bad for trying to kill Kaladin. He still attempted to do it. Damnation.

● Elhokar... is so pitiful. He’s been trying and it must have been hard for him to go to Kaladin and asked him how to be the ‘hero’. It doesn’t change his past actions and I wish... I just wish he was different. 

Lastly, my favorite scene of the book:

‘You sent him to the sky to die, assassin,’ Kaladin said, Stormlight puffing from his lips, ‘but the sky and the winds are mine. I claim them, as I now claim your life.”

Storms, Kal. You’re so damn cool. Bridge Four just have so much love him just as much as I do.

Chapter One-Hundred-and-Twelve – For the Living

Still nothing solid on who that ninth Unmade could be from Hessi, though she wonders if she's “conflating two Unmade into one”. Possible, but mmmmm...

“Kaladin remembered a woman's kiss.” That is not how I was expecting this chapter to start. But! MORE TARAH INFORMATION. GOOD. She's still basically an unknown at this point, so more info is always good.

Cultural note: dresses of an old-fashioned Thaylen style – an apronlike front with straps over the shoulders and skirts that ended right below the knee; a buttoned shirt underneath, often in a bright colour

HUGS. SHE'S HUGGING HIM AND HE'S COMFORTABLE AND HAPPY, AAAAAHHHH

It would take forever for tall-and-skinny beanpole Kaladin to find a spear long enough for him to wield properly.

Haaaah. She has to follow her own path. She won't stick around just to be with him, just as he wouldn't do so for her. She has a point, too - “Maybe someday you'll learn how to be there for the living, not just for the dead.” Kaladin continues to carry the weight of those deaths; he did throughout his time as a slave, in Sadeas' warcamp, and still shoulders it now. He's got such a gentle, soft, caring heart, and it doesn't heal easily when it bruises or breaks, especially as he refuses to let go of the pain of those deaths.

I'm- I'm glad this is ending amicably; I was wondering if she'd end up just another name on the list of those who died/Kaladin believes he failed. THANK YOU FOR NOT FRIDGING TARAH FOR THE SAKE OF MANPAIN, BRANDERSON.

More really cool Shadesmar trees: 'taller, more statuesque ones with deep crimson trunks and limbs like burnt-red crystals that, at the ends, burst into a small collection of minerals.'

Kaladin's still attracting windspren every now and then. What is it that they're drawn to about him right now that's causing them to pop over even a little from the Physical Realm?

So the uncorrupted Oathgate-spren look like a matching pair of salt-and-pepper shakers – one iridescent-black, one prism-white, as opposed to the corrupted black-and-red that we saw back at the Kholinar Oathgate.

And there's an army in their way. Of course.

Chapter One-Hundred-and-Thirteen – The Thing Men Do Best

'Dai-Gonarthis' is our possible last Unmade, then, and maybe one that packs immense destruction as its main ability – perhaps even as much as to destroy Aimia?

“Did you really think that you belonged here? That you were native to Roshar?” Oh come on, Stormfather, why would they think otherwise, when all they know of their history has been here? They didn't even know much about four thousand years ago, much less anything before that, and after the destruction of the Desolations? After the continuing apocalypses that would wipe out 90% of the population? They'd lost all knowledge of what came before, much less so early as that. At least their originating from Shinovar makes sense to believe from their point of view – but complete aliens?

Where. Did. The. Humans. Come. From. Between the Rosharan System blurb in Arcanum Unbounded and the main SA series itself, we know that they have to be genetically distinct, and everything else in the Greater Roshar System screams 'deliberately created this way'. There are spren on Ashyn, aren't there? Were Rosharan-humans originally created by Adonalsium rather than by Shards or transplanted from Yolen, and put on Ashyn instead of Roshar?

“It was not only the truth of humankind's origin that caused the Recreance. It was the distinct, powerful fear that they would destroy this world, as men like them had destroyed the one before. The Radiants abandoned their vows for that reason, as will you.” Okay, that makes a lot more sense. I'm still shocked that it was enough that they would kill their soul-bonded spren to do so, but they essentially looked at themselves and went I have the power to physics-nuke a planet and that's more than enough to shake anyone to the core.

[winces] And the bridgemen get it. “Invaded by people trying to reclaim their homeland. Storms. I'd be mad too.”

Except they've been co-opted by Odium, their fellows transformed by the Everstorm into mockeries of the Radiants – powerful, but still mockeries, and ones that consume the soul of the body that they inhabit, and in the end, they and/or Odium will destroy Roshar so that there is nothing left for either Humans or Parsh/Dawnsingers.

Their unwavering faith in Kaladin is beautiful and heartwrenching at the same time. Dalinar, on the other hand… he's losing hope that Adolin and Elhokar will ever return. 'No news is good news' doesn't quite count when the city they were in has fallen to the enemy and no information was coming out of Kholinar before that anyway.

!!! So- what the Vorins call the Tranquiline Halls could in fact be a reference to the origin of the Rosharan-humans?

Honor sounds like he was going a bit loopy before he died, though even before that, he was egging on the Radiants, perhaps pushing the war even when peace might have have been brokered and Odium's power over the Dawnsingers broken.

“They tried to protect the world. I blame them for their weakness, their broken oaths. But I also understand. You have cursed me, human, with this capacity.” Character development even from the Stormfather, greatest of spren of Roshar. Who would have thought?

[winces] The coalition alliance is cracking along every seam it has. And Taravangian has the sheer gall to say that he's sorry, when he's the one who orchestrated all of it! ~~FUCK OFF, YOU MANIPULATIVE OLD TURDBUCKET~~

“I tried my best to hide this.” “So we could continue living a lie?” “It is, in my experience, the thing men do best.” I… I would say something along the lines of 'fucking ouch', but- but instead I'm reminded of that one Terry Pratchett quote from Death in Hogfather – the one about needing to believe the little lies so that we can believe the big ones: 'JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.'

That's not what Dalinar or the Stormfather sees, of course, but at the same time……

Interlude Twelve – Rhythm of Withdrawal

The Fused's/Odium's plan for Venli stumping for them now involves her forced into a hermit cave, an essentially 'primitive' existence, and I'll bet it's to help the image of how they want to portray her – the last of a people that had held out against humans for centuries, millennia, now but a dying predecessor to those who will rise and fight.

Oh, no more individual talks? You're right, Venli; Odium probably doesn't want you and your people to realize their history of long ago as Dawnsingers, or how close the world has come to complete and utter unlivable destruction in Desolations past.

!!! She's going to the assault on Thaylen City with the rest of them? OOOOO. Sanderson please let her meet Dalinar in person that'd be great

Yeaaaaah, the Everstorm's sent to push them onward – maybe even awaken new Fused on the way there (especially since Rine says that the “strongest and most skilled of [their] number have yet to awaken”, which is… oooof.)

Interlude Thirteen – Rysn

Who is very much not happy to be confined to a desk, no matter how 'important' the job may be. Someone needs to invent a kind of wheelchair stat so she can have some freedom of movement.

That Thaylen Gemstone Reserve is going to be important. This is the second time they've mentioned it in only the last few chapters.

That 'Wheeeeeeeeeeee.' has me cracking up istg

She still has her grass! And her insectoid gift from Relu-na! Chiri-Chiri is an adorable name for the larkin; it sounds like an onomatopoeia. Her own tiny iridescent not-axehound!

“You just ate.” Thank you branderson for somehow capturing the exact exasperated tone of voice that all pet owners everywhere know by heart.

Vstim is past seventy! I'd originally though him early sixties or something when I read their WoR Interlude. By Earth calculations, that would now make him… at least 77, and still sauntering around the world to trade up until taking this position. Damn, he's spry.

Hmm. Looks like the Growth Surge can't heal wounds that are past a certain point. Hobber's paralysis healed, but he did that by taking stormlight in himself, not receiving healing from an outside source.

Ohhh, Rysn bowed out of going on further expeditions herself- you and Renarin need to have a long talk together on disability, I think.

All of the security – and the assertion that the vault has never before been robbed save through embezzlement – makes me all the more certain that we'll see a robbery happen in this interlude.

Oh, so she does have some sort of wheelchair…? Sounds like it needs a bit more optimization in order to get her into and through more places, though.

!!!! 'The King's Drop' – like Honor's Drop, I believe was the one mentioned earlier? A perfect gemstone that would never lose light? Which would explain why it's still alight after two hundred years without ever being taken out to refresh its light. 'The size of a child's head' daaaaayum but that's a big gemstone. But… I wonder what the other, more mundane objects in there are being kept for, if they're important enough to be secured in the same area as the King's Drop?

“They say it's a chunk off the Stone of Ten Dawns.” That's more mythology and one we don't know about what is the Stone of Ten Dawns tell us Sanderson-

Aw shit, whoever the thief is, they're ignoring the damage – another Radiant associated with Taravangian, perhaps?

Smart decision to use the rope and tie the ruby to her, and if the one killing everyone really is a Radiant, then reducing the available amount of stormlight via Chiri-Chiri will actually be a good thing.

Alone in the darkness, men dead and dying around her as she realizes that there's no way for her to step to load the crossbow, the thief-murderer advancing on her, but at the same time-

!!! It wasn't a Radiant but a Fused? There's a type of Fused that have the ability to use a Voidbinding that's equivalent to Lightweaving? UM. This is the first that we've heard of that. Also, Chiri-Chiri can feed off of voidlight as well as stormlight.

Odium and the Fused want the King's Drop – or at least one of the perfect gemstones – but for what?

Interlude Fourteen – Teft

TEEEEEEFT. Last POV we had from you, you were falling back into moss-addiction, to the point of selling your Bridge Four coat for money. Sounded like you were stabilizing a little bit there for a while, given Kaladin and the rest of your support group, but then started sliding back again recently.

[winces] Then again, I could have been reading him 'maybe getting a little better' as him just being functional, as outlined here in such viscerally honest terms.

Looks like there's someone who we saw last time who still hasn't given up on him, though. The honorspren is still there, still standing at his side. Has he- has he sworn Oaths already? And how many?

Oh shit. They've got trouble at Urithiru too?! SHITSHITSHIT THEY GOT ROCK AND TWO OTHERS AND THE HONORBLADE-

Rock and Bisig are still alive thank the Heralds but they may not be for long unless they get help, and Renarin was still in Thaylen City, though he left the audience chamber-

Ishar was the one that founded the Radiants, interesting. One would assume that Jezrien, 'king of the Heralds', was the one to do so, but no, it was the patron of the Bondsmiths. Makes sense, in that they're all 'bound' by their Oaths, but that's also an aspect of Honor in general.

[snorts] Dalinar cursing by the Stormfather's name and him responding is never going to get old.

Shit, Ishar's maybe more crazy than the rest of the Heralds? That's… saying something.

[rolls eyes] And of course no answer on who/what the other Bondsmith-spren are, even when asked directly. Stormfather's basically giving us a RAFO.

Oh hot damn, actual information on how the highstorms Invest spheres – a function of all three Realms via the power of a Shard, even Shattered. So, while highstorms existed before the Shards got to Roshar, they probably weren't Invested before that point in time. And while Stormfather now is bound with a Splinter of Honor, he can't Invest a gem at will – that power is not within his control.

Chapter Sixty-Six – Strategist

Flashbaaaaack~

...does. does 'strategist' here apply to Tiny Adolin (who, at nearly-thirteen, is probably just about to be not-so-tiny). 'So full of energy.' My little ADHD prince, yessss. Look at this boy, look at him learning so enthusiastically! Attending tactical meetings, soaking up everything Dalinar's trying his best to teach him.

Suffer all the hugs, Dalinar. Suffer them. If anything else, I'm glad that you haven't steered your sons away from hugs.

All these years, and Evi still hasn't acclimated to the cold. How cold is eastern Roshar as opposed to the western side? I know they've got the Frostlands bordering Alethkar to the south and southeast, but what kind of average temperature difference are we talking?

Ohhh, Evi's trying, trying so hard to be a Good Vorin Wife, even if she's not particularly interested in reading and other pursuits that the Alethi expect of a woman. She's given up so much of herself and her people to try to fit in. And with Dalinar out on campaign, she tries to divide her time between wherever he is and Kholinar, but he doesn't let Renarin come along? Because he's 'unfit for battle'? Fucking hell, Dalinar – and oh, Evi, separated from one of her sons or her husband no matter where she is! I can't even imagine the stress she must be going through, trying so hard to make her marriage work and care for her sons, all in this cold land that she ran to, that she still might not even consider home despite all the years spent in Alethkar… She deserves better. Evi deserves better than this.

Dalinar's the 'strategist' referred to by the title, of course. Looks like he's finally settled into more of the role we knew him in at first, even if he's still The Blackthorn rather than The Highprince.

Three years since he and Gavilar last met up face to face? Daaamn. And I'll bet in those intervening years that Gavilar's  become more and more invested in his 'Sons of Honor' goals. It's, what, only about three years until he gets assassinated? He's probably putting plans in motion already to attempt to bring about the next Desolation.

The whatever-was-so-terrible event that happened at the Rift is looming on the horizon. This is going to be more than just 'putting down a rebellion'.

“I doubt we will ever settle back in Kholinar again.” Oh, that's… that's not good.

Shit, she's crying.

Seven years. “Yes, I married a soldier. It's my fault for not being strong enough to deal with the consequences. Thank you, Dalinar. You've made that very clear.”

This has been an argument long in the making. She's put up with so much, set aside her own wellbeing and happiness for his sake, and for what? For what.

Chapter Sixty-Seven – Mishim

[squints] 'Mishim' is the name of one of Roshar's moons, isn't it? Alongside Nomon and Salas. Huh. Maybe this means a nighttime mission?

...a Skybreaker notes that 'this generation has had only one Bondsmith', stating it as a Bad Thing, and speculating that it has something to do with Honor. They didn't say which spren it was – the Stormfather or another – so perhaps this was around the time of Honor's Shattering.

Shallan is shaking off her own murder remarkably well, all things considered. She believes the figure she saw in the mirror to be the presence of the Unmade, though, which I hadn't even considered.

[rolls around in glee at the casual, fond Shadolin physical contact]

[facepalms] Elhokar, you really are stuck in denial at this point. Aesudan is either under the influence of the Unmade or dead at this point; there's really not much of an option that she'd be able to resist it.

Gavinor. For once, you say your son's name. I think this might be the first time we've actually heard you say it.

This all sounds like a fairly sound plan. I'm actually rather impressed; Elhokar is doing much better now than he was before. He's much more stable emotionally and has more confidence in his ideas. A gloryspren at a compliment from Adolin, though? I… huh. He really values his cousin's advice and approval. H e r alds I need to write more exploring these two (my kingdom for an Elhokar RPer, seriously)

He married Aesudan for her strength – because of her ambition, not despite it. I really hope we get some more insight into that whole relationship. Gavilar's marriage to Navani didn't exactly give Elhokar the best example to model his own marriage on, and seven years away at war definitely didn't foster any closeness between them.

(considering his Very Obvious Crush on Kaladin, I still wonder if he's gay and only married for the politics and an heir)

Cultural Note: at the tailor shop for women, there's a woman handling the money and a man doing the tailoring work. Looks like in Alethkar those likely aren't gender-locked roles/professions

So. There's at least one food stockpile in this area. Still don't know where it came from, but it's under the control of a minor lighteyes – one whose soldiers and scribes aren't the best at their jobs.

'Storming lighteyes'. Veil. You may be a personality that Shallan based on her understanding and imagining of a darkeyed Alethi woman but that's still Shallan's perception. Kaladin – and his more-than-justified dislike of lighteyes – you ain't. Be critical of the lord's practices all you want, but remember that you're a lighteyes too. You can't erase that fact.

Those altered angerspren are… thematically appropriate, but also creepy as fuck.

HOID. WIT. WIT WIT WIT

Oh! This is the story that Sigzil was trying to tell! But, true to form, Hoid does it with a vivacity and flair unlike any other.

Interesting – the Rosharans, or at least the Alethi, personify two of the moons as female (Mishim and Salas) and one as male (Nomon).

Wit can Lightweave, and he definitely uses it in some of his storytelling, but this – this is skill of the hand (and maybe something a little extra woven in). He's pretty much immortal, so he's definitely had time to practice!

….what did you see in your pack, Wit. Do you have a Radiant-dar.

HAH. Whether he does or doesn't, he just saw right through Shallan's illusion – either literally or figuratively doesn't matter – and she knows that he knows.

WAIT HOLY SHIT IT'S SHALLAN AGAIN, I JUST REALIZED. WHERE- [flips back a few pages] Wit's voice. She was Veil before that, and as soon as we got 'What was that sound?' she immediately shifts back to Shallan again.

I am loving the mythology behind the Natan people's blue skin. We may not have an actual explanation for that yet – knowing Sanderson, there is one – but I am definitely content for now. We got a Hoid Story, after all, and more cultural worldbuilding on top of that.

Chapter Sixty-Eight – Aim for the Sun

Coming from a story about one of the moons, now we have a chapter title referencing the sun? (I will not yell about characters I associate with the sun and this being a Shallan chapter, I will not-)

This Elsecaller's recording sounds like it could be Jasnah from another place and time. What is this 'Sibling' that they mention though?

Shallan's observation notes the Alethi proprietor of this place as short, but honestly, for an Alethi, that just means around five-ten to six-foot, right?

I have missed Wit so much. So much.

Ooop, guess you should be taking thieving lessons from him, hmm?

I'm not sure the universe knows why it puts up with you, Hoid, or even if you do yourself.

“The persona...fled once you recognized me.” You mean Veil dissipated when your subconscious realized it was Wit's voice you were hearing – perhaps because of the safety/assurance you associate with him? Because these personas are protecting you – a more solid form of a mask against the world, so that you don't have to deal with things like your lighteyed privilege and lack of knowledge about people and the world in general (Veil) or your trauma regarding Pattern-as-a-Blade and killing your mother with him (Radiant) – once you heard Wit, that mask just wasn't there. There was no transition, nothing. Just… poof.

….I suddenly have a mighty need to hear about these seven time you got mixed up in religion, Hoid.

The way he speaks makes me wonder if Wisdom is a Shard, and Shallan just isn't hearing the capitalization.

Oh, we haven't seen her get in a back-and-forth this delightful since back with her early times with Jasnah, maybe even as far back as the first book! I'm getting the feeling that this conversation is really pulling the Shallan part of Shallan to the foreground.

OH MAN WIT DIDN'T KNOW SADEAS WAS KILLED. “Storms, no. I'd have applauded.” And perhaps even composed a jig on the spot in memory of the occasion.

[hums] There's the title drop, and in a much more understandable context than my silent screaming off to the side.

Oh, Shallan. As composed as Wit seems to be from the outside, once again your perception remains remarkably superficial. Did you catch nothing from the moment that you looked into his eyes and saw mountains crumbling? Though the ability to “change things”… yes, that'd be an enviable one. Even so, the way that Hoid does it isn't the way that you necessarily should.

“For men never see as far as they think they do.” Ooof. And isn't that the truth. Even ones like Dalinar who try to change it for the better don't know how that stone will eventually end up.

He's right. Be wary of Hoid, Shallan. He may be an ally, but he would let Roshar crumble to save the Cosmere. What he might in the end term the best and most necessary way to handle things may not be in the favour of you and yours.

“The Heart of the Revel”. The Unmade. So. It has influence over the members of the cult, and especially so over those of… perhaps not the inner circle, but 'those in the know'. Even if Wit can get you in, it won't be an easy infiltration.

“You already know how. Learn why.” Oh, now there's a question to ask. This being Shallan, she'll internalize and contemplate a question like that better than she would an outright story and Hoid knows it.

“He said he'd treat me like a king.” [SNORTS] Considering how he's treated kings in the past? You're getting off well on this one, good innkeeper.

Hoid feels like a spren to Pattern? Or by 'one of us' does he instead mean like a Radiant – that's the real question.
