Sometimes, it was fun to tease those who weren't too familiar with some of the more basic instincts Mobians had. Volt had to figure some of them out for himself over the years. It wasn't always easy to be half-alien DNA.

Not to mention being a hybrid of two very different species, but he made it work and chuckled at the feline tilting their head.

Vier jaar geleden werkte ik op het archief van de Provincie Limburg. Onder Maastrichtenaren beter gekend als het Gouvernement. Een van mijn taken was het ordenen en opbergen van schadeclaims. Daaronder ook de schade door derden toegebracht aan provinciale wegen. De dossiers verdwenen naar verloop van tijd naar zware archiefkasten in de kelder, die enkel toegankelijk werden door aan hendels te draaien. Het gebeurde zelden dat een ambtenaar ze nog eens wilde inzien. Gedane zaken nemen geen keer. De paperassen wachtten geduldig op het moment dat ze vernietigd zouden worden.

Welbeschouwd hebben ongeveer vier personen deze foto´s bekeken: Diegene die de foto maakte, een medewerker van de juridische dienst van de provincie, het mannetje van de verzekeringsmaatschappij en, tot slot, de archiefmedewerker. Allen bekeken de foto met een ambtelijke blik. Vluchtig en emotieloos. Business as usual.

Daarna begonnen de polaroids zich te vervelen in het donker. Ze verkleurden een beetje en werden door kleine nietjes langzaam verminkt. Ik heb ze van een stille, tragische dood gered. Ze kregen een tweede leven. In het vervolg zou met ontroering naar ze gekeken worden.

Het kijken naar de polaroids heeft iets ongelofelijk spannends. Niet alleen omdat we kijken naar de essentie van de fotografie - zo ziet ‘het’ eruit - maar ook, en vooral, omdat er zich langzaam een ‘kleine chronologie van de brokkenpiloot’ voor ons ontvouwt. Waar gereden wordt vallen spaanders. En dan is er nog iets.

Het jaloersmakende. Geen enkele fotograaf had deze beelden kunnen maken. We zouden simpelweg achter de feiten aanhobbelen. Of anders ongetwijfeld veel te druk in de weer zijn met licht en kadrage. Dit auteursloze oeuvre werd terloops bij elkaar gekiekt en zegt mij eigenlijk veel meer dan al het conceptueel gefröbel van kunstenaars.

Omstreeks 2003 verdwenen deze pareltjes uit de dossiers. De polaroidcamera werd vervangen door een digitaal toestel. Goedkoper en gebruiksvriendelijker. Spijtig, de melancholicus in mij kijkt liever naar het aandoenlijke kadertje van de polaroid. Met zijn mooie - en een beetje triestige - kleuren.
