Polyrey HPL
11:45/ 01.05.19 Today I had the pleasure of meeting Donna from Polyrey, a company much like Formica as it produces HPL, compact laminates and melamine faced board. These can be used in many applications from cladding, doors, kitchen worktops and cubicles due to its great resistance of moisture, scratches, heat, chemicals and hygienic qualities. These are available in the usual variety of colours, finishes and textures such as wood, metal & customisable. Recently they have produced a product similar to but much cheaper than Fenix that doesn’t leave fingerprints (yet it doesn't contain nanotechnology).

– à l’usure (résistance à l’abrasion jusqu’à 150 tours) ;
– à la chaleur (supportant des températures jusqu’à 180°) ;
– à l’eau, à la vapeur d’eau et aux moisissures (hydrofuge et imputrescible) ;
– à la lumière (aucune altération de la couleur à la lumière artificielle) ;
– aux chocs ;
– hygiène optimale ;
– nettoyage facile.

Contemporary Art Inspires Students Competing in the 16th Annual Wilsonart Challenges Student Chair Design Competition
The principles of contemporary art was the theme that inspired students at Ryerson School of Interior Design to design and build chairs for the 16th Annual Wilsonart Challenges Student Chair Design Competition. Beyond basic form and function, each design was also informed by how students used expressive and stylistic contemporary elements such as movement, proportion, contrast or balance. When creating their chairs, students used patterns from the Wilsonart® Laminate Collection. The winning chair and five runners up can be viewed here.
Wilsonart, a world-class innovator of next generation engineered surfaces, created Wilsonart Challenges, which is both a sponsored class and a competition. During the year-long program, students learn how to design and build a one-of-a-kind chair, as well as how to prepare for a major trade show. Introducing the program more than a decade ago, the Wilsonart Challenges is the longest-running sponsored student design class in North America.
Each year, a different design school hosts #WilsonartChallenges. This year, Wilsonart worked with The Ryerson School of Interior Design and with the University’s Creative Technology Lab at FCAD, an advanced technology-based workshop that supports creative research, specialized curriculum and entrepreneurship activities across all nine FCAD Schools and Ryerson Zones. It is the first year Wilsonart Challenges has been held at a school in Canada.
Amy Yan won the 2020 competition with her design “THE NOT LOVESEAT.” Her chair is a playful commentary on the dualistic nature of both human relationships and architectural volumes. The two curved seat backs appear to be under significant tension as though the chair is being stretched apart by the sheer volume that make up the two seats. The resulting image could be a heart or viewed as a peace symbol suggesting that the chair embraces the dualities of love and peace along with the notions of splitting and separation. Amy’s chair poses a fundamental question; can these seemingly opposing notions exist together? Going a step further, can they even exist without each other as conflicting as they may seem? The judges noted that Amy’s chair was the perfect dialog between art and design.
“Ryerson emphasized hands on knowledge of materials more than any other school we have ever seen. The result is the outstanding quality in craftsmanship of the final chairs,” noted Grace Jeffers, Design Historian and Wilsonart Challenges Program Director.
“From a chair that explored the contrasting relationship between life and death to one which offers a playful commentary on the history of art and design, this year’s students have beautifully expressed both stylistic and functional elements of contemporary art,” noted Tammy Weadock, Communications Manager at Wilsonart. “Contemporary art is an ideal guidepost for designing with laminate, a modern material which inspires new designs and applications each day. Once again, we are overwhelmed with the students’ creativity and the artistry used to design and build these beautiful chairs.”

About Ryerson School of Interior Design Housed under the Faculty of Communication and Design, Ryerson School of Interior Design is in a renovated post and beam warehouse in downtown Toronto. It is one of Ontario’s oldest university degree-granting interior design programs. Started in 1948, the school has earned widespread industry respect due to the accomplishments of faculty and alumni.
The schools’ teaching is grounded in a commitment to experiential and hands-on learning. An internship requirement, completed before graduation, is an integral part of the preparation for the educational experiences possible at the school.
Internationally renowned Azure magazine named the Ryerson School of Interior Design one of the top eight interior design schools on the planet alongside Parsons the New School for Design and the Rhode Island School of Design, among others. For the honor, one hundred international architects, interior designers, industrial designers and other practitioners weighed in: “Ryerson dominates the discussion about the best interior design school in Canada, and graduates are equipped with the necessary technical skills to hit the ground running when they leave school.”

The eight new quartz patterns range widely in design from extra-large veining and movement to smoother styles in medium to fine/small particulates.
– à l’usure (résistance à l’abrasion jusqu’à 150 tours) ;
– à la chaleur (supportant des températures jusqu’à 180°) ;
– à l’eau, à la vapeur d’eau et aux moisissures (hydrofuge et imputrescible) ;
– à la lumière (aucune altération de la couleur à la lumière artificielle) ;
– aux chocs ;
– hygiène optimale ;
– nettoyage facile.

Wilsonart Escalates Commitment to Educate Architects and Designers on Material Use
When it’s all gone, what will you build with? This question, along with others, will be posed during the third annual National Day of Learning, an event created by Wilsonart to help educate architects and designers about best practices in material specification. Wilsonart is committed to providing thought leadership to the A&D community to help them put materials to their best use. One aspect of that lies in the complexity of “real” versus “fake” materials. This year’s event focuses on the implications of living in the Age of the Anthropocene, a geological time period in which human activity threatens to become the dominant influence on the environment. Naturalness: Design in the Anthropocene, debuts October 16th at the Center for Architecture in New York City and will be broadcast twice that day via live webcast.
“We know from our ongoing dialog with professionals in the industry that they wish to have a broad understanding about the materials they specify,” remarks Tammy Weadock, Communications Manager at Wilsonart. “With mounting evidence that we have entered into a whole new geological epoch – one dominated by the impact we humans have had on the Earth’s atmosphere, oceans and wildlife – a discussion about materials and how architects and designers can make a difference has never been more relevant or more important.” In addition to conducting the National Day of Learning event, Wilsonart is also launching a cross-country educational tour, adding new content to an educational hub on its website and interfacing with the A&D community about how design is a critical part of the solution.
This year’s presentation will be given by Grace Jeffers, a writer, design historian, educator and artist. She has pioneered and continues to lead an interdisciplinary and integrated approach to the study of materials. In 2019, Jeffers was named one of seven National Kitchen & Bath (NKBA) “Insiders,” a hand-selected group of thought leaders chosen for their ability to push boundaries and infuse global knowledge and expertise to positively impact the residential built community. “Designing in the Age of the Anthropocene puts designers in a tough place: There’s a desire for authenticity when it comes to materials, but how do designers remain authentic to their concepts, their clients and the climate?” posits Jeffers. “Nature isn’t what it used to be. It's a complicated relationship between the natural and man-made worlds. Material selection is critical to all outcomes,” stresses Jeffers. “Material specification is an ongoing exploration of finishes; it’s critical that designers have a firm grasp on man-made versus natural in the face of imminent scarcity.”
Highlights of support for Naturalness: Design in the Anthropocene include:
A National Day of Learning – Oct. 16, 2019 Professionals are invited to join in person or online for the third, annual National Day of Learning to learn about Naturalness: Design in the Anthropocene, what you need to know and the implications for the future. High Pressure Laminate Market Emerging Trends and Strong Application Scope by 2025
High pressure laminate (HPL) is a type of decorative laminate which is manufactured by impregnating kraft paper with the help of melamine resin, with the help of high pressure. These sheets are bonded on substrates such as particle board or medium density fiberboard. The most common pressure range used for manufacturing (HPL) is between 1,200 to 2,000 lbs per square inch. The resulting laminate is later covered with a layer of decorative paper. High pressure laminates can be employed in both horizontal as well as vertical applications.
High pressure laminates have various benefits such as durability, versatility, scratch resistant, and easy to maintain. Due to the durability and supreme qualities possessed by high pressure laminates, high pressure laminates are utilized in a wide range of applications such as residential, commercial, and industrial due to their superior qualities and durability.
High Pressure Laminate (HPL) Market: Trends
Demand for high pressure laminates is expected to rise at a steady pace during the forecast period. Demand is estimated to increase primarily due to rise in the utilization of cabinets and ready-to-assemble furniture and floorings.
In the interior design industry, HPL is highly preferred due to its pattern, color, finish, and texture. The designer can optimize high pressure laminates as per the requirement, which helps to add aesthetic sense to the interiors. Upcoming social, economic and design trends across the globe are major factors that are driving the demand for HPL in the last few years.
Manufacturers of high pressure laminates can develop new products by innovation or by carrying required research and development activities. Manufacturing eco-friendly products is anticipated to present opportunities for manufacturers, which in turn is likely to provide growth opportunities for manufacturers to increase their consumer base in the market.
High Pressure Laminate (HPL) Market: Region-wise Outlook
Asia Pacific was a prominent market for high pressure laminates in 2016. Among the countries in Asia Pacific, the demand was substantially high in developing countries such as China and India. These countries have been witnessing rapid increase in its population along with expansion of their overall economies, which has led to increase in disposable income. Increased spending on home interiors is fuelling the high pressure laminate market in Asia Pacific.
