Fanfics I really liked in July 2023

So. Since I keep a list of what I´ve read anyway (there´s always a list), I will rec all the fics I´ve wholly enjoyed on a monthly basis. Old and new, canon or AU, big or small authors, long or short but nearly always Johnlock (-ish).

Somehow, they started to talk about sexual experience and John learns that Sherlock is in fact not an unsuspecting virgin. 320k hits and 11.8k kudos. Need I say more?

"Modern-day dystopian espionage geisha!lock AU" it says in the summary.

If that doesn't make you curious, I don't know what. Every night, Sherlock transforms into Xie, the famous drashaskaya in the world's best House of Repose. He suffers under the abusive relationship with his husband Jim. Everything changes when John, a former soldier and now gouvernment-employed assassin enters the floating world in order to investigate a conspiracy. Suspenseful, hurt/comfort and very sensual. John is a guardian angel and when he gets assigned to watch over one Sherlock Holmes, he has got a lot of saving to to. Funny and wholesome!

Ikr a johnlocker and a horse girl? Pick a struggle! Surprisingly not as niche as you'd think there's definitely fics with him on one and even adaptations where he canonically does ride one. And then there's silver blaze which I found in a big book of horse stories that started it all.

There's also a western au where beebslock has a blue roan named Azure <3 and he loves her, also one by poppyalexander where he must ride but hates it and calls the horse stupid lol

I love love takes on him where he has an affinity for them or experience with them he's def an animal lover. But him floundering with them and being out of depth is also fun

And if we're talking him as a horse I see all your friesans and plain blacks like Korazairs lovely work but I see that and I raise you he is a thoroughbred with an uncommon pattern (what do they call them, colorful?) Much like sodashi or buchiko

Rec: Seasonal sentiment of a different sort characterizes this somewhat melancholy but no less soul-warming fic, in which John struggles to figure out why Sherlock isn’t approaching the season with quite the same enthusiasm as in the past. Gobs of scrumptious hurt/comfort ensue as The Case of the Undecorated Flat unfolds and John proves his mettle as a boyfriend and partner. Mycroft also shines in a very nice supporting role, and Mrs. Hudson gets what has to be one of the best lines ever about Sherlock: “He’s not easy to love, I know,” she said at last, with a soft, knowing smile. “Its a good thing he’s so easy to love.”

This is part two of an alternate meeting AU, but it can also be read as a post-pilot episode fic in which they got together from the start.

Made this little mood board for @fuckyeahfightlock‘s AU fic “The Jewel in the Tower”. I read this fic twice last summer and adored every lush word. The description and world building and characterization and really ALL of it is a delight to read. It’s a roller coaster of a story, too.

Rec: I loved this to bits! This is an utterly irresistible and fun alternate meeting rom-com with lots of remixed canon bits and no angst. Just clever dialogue, original cases, first-rate writing, tropes-a-plenty, and a gradually coalescing overall arc that truly tickled and delighted me when it all came together.
