here's a list of programs/sites/whatever that were helpful to me when i was moving away from using spotify & back to downloading music:

soulseek - peer to peer downloading program, has most music you'd want. there's "rules" to it though and the UI is a little confusing, but you can figure it out. there's tutorials. i believe in you

cobalt.tools, ytiz.xyz, yt-dlp - mp3 downloaders, for the songs that you can't find on soulseek

musicbee - music player, extremely customiseable. reminds me of when i used itunes back in the day. has a lot of good features, including syncing music over to your phone

lastfm & listenbrainz - sites that keep track of your listening stats. i'd recommend this even if you still choose to use a music streaming service

syncedlyrics - cmd thing that gets you timed song lyrics, like the ones spotify has. there's no UI but it's easy enough to use. just grab the lyrics and timestamps it spits out and paste it into musicbee

music presence - program that shows what song you're listening to in your discord status, in case you use discord and enjoy the thought of other people seeing what you're listening to, which i do for some reason

i'm not going to lie to you and say that switching away from spotify/streaming services is an effortless task, it took me half a whole day of nonstop Work to get all my music downloaded and sorted out, but i will say that it was worth it!! and you should do it 👍 if you want to

speaking of vsynth songs a while back i started making a playlist that was originally just gonna be every original song i like regardless of newness or popularity (i like having playlists that are several hundred songs long) but i got distracted and never did that past the first couple songs BUT i have since just been adding any new or new-to-me songs that i like, if u wanna see. like two thirds are pretty big songs with 10s or 100s of thousands of views, even millions BUT theres also some like 200 view wonders i think are really great!!

So I personally downloaded my entire spotify to my computer using sidify music converter. It's subscription based, unfortunately, but I just paid for one month of it and then canceled once I had all my songs. I think there's some free converters out there too but I didn't want to tempt fate.

You'll want to cancel spotify once you have your music, otherwise it'll eventually detect that you've used a converter and suspend your account. If you have premium, it'll still charge even though your account is suspended which is stupid as hell.

To play the music on my phone I got an app called Poweramp. Really nice and customizable, plus it's a one time purchase instead of subscription which we love. Plugged my phone into the laptop and transferred all the music over.

I have been trying to also by physical albums from the bands I listen to the most, both to have real copies and to financially support the bands. Sadly, that is... expensive.

Also, with sidify at least, you'll need to put all your Liked songs into their own playlist if you want to download them. For whatever reason the program can't download the Liked Song library.

i want to finally drop spotify this year and switch to purchasing/owning music again. i’ve been using spotify for 10 (???) years now and i feel a little lost. heard bandcamp ain’t the way anymore.
