It wasn't long before his writing slowed, and a small drawing of Curly formed at the bottom of the note.

There's a pause, his eyes darting around the room to make sure neither of his brothers were near. Darry had taken off of work to look after him whilst sick, but he was in the kitchen making the two of them food.

"The last time I saw him, he got his hands on some grass. 'Nd, damn, it was crazy. That stuff's crazy different from cancer sticks. Stuff ain't for me, but 'least I can say I tried it."

"He plays real rough, too. We'll be scufflin' together, 'nd all the sudden he'll kick out my damn shins! He don't got a problem cheatin', neither."

"He's real different from everyone in the gang. But that ain't a bad thing, not at all."

Good addition, because this was more or less my first thought on the OP. You can see historic situations where someone in a strong position acted in extremes, what we might see as desperate measures, in order to consolidate strength. They ascertained that display of strength was necessary which simultaneously shows where they were weakest. But not acting in that manner would have been worse as it would have allowed their enemies to act in strength against them.

You tend to see this especially with regard to regime change/succession. The new ruler is benefited by some display of strength because the general public assumes they are weak without it. And that assumption is more dangerous than committing the necessary force to show otherwise. Of course then there are situations when this fails and just underlines that weakness. Which doesn't mean that was the wrong action to take, and perhaps instead highlights just how important it was to get it right.

A chunk of force assessment and "art of war" style thinking often forgets that humans are imperfect actors with imperfect knowledge, despite rationality. Seemingly unnecessary displays of force act as a public education of sorts. If everyone can see that you're the big kid on the block then they shouldn't mistakenly move against you. And if you can create that image then it's true even if in reality a concerted action against you could unseat you.

One of the really key things to grasp from studying military/political theory is how counter-intuitive the perception of strength and weakness is.

When a military force takes its strongest unit out of reserve and dedicates it to a battle, it is demonstrating weakness and insecurity. It is losing initiative and being forced to act reactively, rather than remaining flexible - it is a fundamentally defensive behaviour to assault the enemy with a great force. Politically, to engage in strict repression of class enemies, to mercilessly destroy those who threaten your class dictatorship, is something done when your power is, in fact, threatened - when it is weak.

Conversely, it is a sign of great strength to show restraint. Fighting with desperation is done by the desparate, by those who are being forced to act a given way by their enemies. When overmatching the enemy, it is always better to take your time and act deliberately, to force them to battle only on your terms. Attacking the enemy piecemeal, defeating them slowly in detail, implies the ability to force the enemy to act and divide themselves at your will. If you are not seriously threatened, then there is no need to dedicate yourself entirely to a given battle, and you would do much better to avoid doing so.

This is, to the uninitiated, counter-intuitive. People see great shows of force and percieve them as strength. People see restraint and perceive it as a lack of will. People idolise times of great desperation because all they see is the immense action that resulted - and they spurn times of strength and security, because they see a lack of action. Through one means or another, they arrive at a common flaw: the fetishism of defeat.

A Fidesz iszonyúan nem érti a soft powert. Már a koncepciót sem. Ami az övé, azt birtokolni és alázni akarja, elölről-hátulról, anyja hátán, ravatalon is. A fideszes ��jságírónak emiatt soha nem lehet egy maréknyi becsülete, ebből következően hitele sem. Megalázott, seggberakott emberként lép ki a színpadra, orrában karikával. Nincs semmilyen mozgásterük sem egyénként, sem szerkesztőségként.

Gyorsan igazoljuk ezt a tételt. Amikor Bese atya izgalmas kalandjai napvilágot láttak, azokról nyilván volt véleményük a fideszes skriblereknek is. De tökmindegy, mi volt az: a központi direktíva miatt totális zárlat volt érvényben öt napon át, egyetlen lap sem hozhatta le az ügyet. Még az érintett és a püspöke által megerősített szikár hírt sem. Következésképp a fideszes olvasó is kénytelen volt az ún. dollármédiából tájékozódni. És konstatálni, hogy a kedvencei: hazug rabok.

Ugyanez Borkaival, Lázárral, a sor végtelen. Tájékozódásra alkalmatlanok ezek a melléktermékek. Márpedig az egy jogos igény, még a fideszes paraszt is tudni akarja, mi van.

A soft power lényege az, hogy nincs mikromenedzselt kézi vezérlés. Vannak mindenféle arcok, akik alapvetően "velünk vannak", de egyébként sokfélék, sokféle közönséghez szólnak, más-más stílusban, ebben-abban vitatkozva, néha vehemensen ellentmondva. Ezért van saját vonzerejük, és a véleményüknek súlya van. Egy sorba kapcsolt droid prüntyögésének nincs, hiszen arról tudja még a drukker is, hogy nem szuverén álláspont, hanem kórusmű.

A költséghatékonyság magáért beszél. A közmédia egymagában felemészt 140 milliárd forintot évente, a Kesma másik 500 milliárdot nagyjából. A teljes független médiaköltségvetés ennek durván a tizede, és ebben benne vannak a bulvártartalmak és a tök politikafüggetlen szórakoztatás. Az impakt ehhez képest: irdatlanul hatékonyabb a nem-fideszes média, forint per közönség alapon.

Persze miért pont ebben ne lennének silány kutyaütők. Elvégre ez a kormányzás része, nem egy piaci alapon működő iparág. Rabszolgahaddal nem lehet sajtót csinálni.

Na és akkor az lenne az ötlet, hogy feldarabolják, lesz értelmiségi tartalom, feje tetejéről talpára Hegelt.

Egyrészt: kikkel? Tizenöt év ment rá arra, hogy elüldözzék az utolsó gondolkodó embereket is, és tényleg csak a szellemi sírkövek maradjanak a temetőben, hol nemzet süllyed el. Meg is lett az ára. A kreativitás önmagában egy liberális műfaj. Jó tollú újságírók, ugyebár, a másik oldalon vannak. Azért, mert csak ott fértek el.

De oké, tegyük fel, hogy lombikból legyártanak ötven jótollút. Ezek attól lesznek jótollúak, hogy nem a kottát éneklik fel, hanem van egyéni hangjuk. Például rittyentenek egy vérmes publit az ukrán szabadságharcról vagy arról, hogy igazából nem lesz egy könyvtől senki sem meleg. Ki hozza le? Kinek lesz bátorsága élesíteni a cikket, amely ellentmond a pártvonalnak? Ki merészel vitát indítani?

És ha ez csodaképp megtörténik, mi következik? Megmondom. Azonnal feljelenti a tehetségtelen, kontraszelektált, korlátolt derékhad. És minél sikeresebb ez az elképzelt szuverénfideszes műhely, annál több lesz az ellensége. Azok, akik a kotta felénekléséből élnek, és pontosan tudják, hogy többre nem képesek. Mi lenne velük, ha versenyezni kéne?

Szarból próbáltok várat építeni. Olyan emberek pofáznak szuverenitásról, akik olyat még képen sem láttak. Annyit is ér. Addig örüljetek, amíg ezt akaratlanul kénytelenek vagyunk kifizetni, mert utána nektek végetek van. És lesz olyan, hogy utána - pont azért, mert szarok vagytok és azok is maradtok. Tóta W

the opening vision we get when we enter the traveler... i ended up watching it multiple times (computer issues ;-;) but MAN was it cool the inside of the traveler in general looks super funky, im going to have to do a no hud run at some point just for screenshots. shoutout to bungie for giving us a sparkly pink rainbow subclass, just in time for pride month lol weapon unsunsetting means i get to pull all sorts of old friends out of the vault. (python, the vow, steelfeather repeater, perfect paradox, etc...) i'm pretty ambivalent abt cayde generally but they did a good job w/ his characterization. i was worried he'd end up being kind of grating but so far he's been okay i was (initially) delighted to see targe. i was not anticipating that they were introducing him just so they could kill him off 5 minutes later. i have mixed feelings on zavala's characterization but it's been a minute since i buried my face into the ishtar collective lore vault so maybe it's just my memory being unreliable. for him to just lose it and start acting irrationally like that felt odd. maybe it's bcs we havent seen him in a while? idk it just felt off. (tbf you could point out that it's probably a byproduct of being forced to relive one of the most unpleasant moments of his entire life so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ fear and desperation can make people do strange things) ikora was cool, idk she didn't read as ooc or anything to me, her reunion with cayde was very sweet, though in hindsight i wish they'd given her a little more to do. seasonal stuff has struggled to give consistency to crow but i appreciate this expansion's efforts to tie up some of those threads more neatly. (i lost it when he pulled out an iron battleaxe, i did not expect that plot point to get touched on!! also it was cool!) i am still irritated that they fridged amanda ( i ignored that part of canon so hard it kinda smacked me in the face when they mentioned her.) i love luzaku, and i would kill for luzaku. ( finally! friendly hive!) i did like the emphasis on ghost and guardian relationships throughout the expansion's story. (also ghost as the location vendor!!!! having regular chats with him while we go through the story!!! the fact he becomes increasingly damaged and wounded throughout the campaign giving me the distinct dread that he might die!!!)

the fact the traveler is letting out intermittent shrieks of pain... MAN... the return of the glowing bird as our guide! (also the fact that the grenade projectile for song of flame looks like a bird... i dont think they're actually connected but it is giving me Ideas.) speaking of song of flame, i kind of expected it to be more underwhelming than it is?? it's actually pretty fun! prismatic is a lot of fun to mess around with! nothing like throwing a storm grenade at an enemy to simultaneously proc devour and amplify. the speaker mask exotic is also giving me Ideas >:) i lost my shit when they mentioned Micah-10. she's one of the last lore characters i expected them to pull out of the hat but i am delighted to see her in game, and seemingly as more than just a cameo too, as far as i can tell. pretty ambivalent abt the whole "player character is the most powertful being in the universe and the chosen one" thing. it's kinda where i figured they'd take it and i dont hate the trope so eh whatever. im glad they actually gave me cover for some of these story missions. i did not super enjoy lightfall's strategy of throwing me in a room with one million guys and a few tiny scraps of cover. ( the radial mast double tank fight... *shudders* ) difficulty wise legendary wasn't all that painful, there were a few fights i struggled with, but a change of loadout, or a little trial and error was pretty much all i needed. i def understand why they've saved the witness fight for the raid, but if my raiding history is anything to got by im certainly not doing day one, but that doesn't mean ill never touch it. (ive missed most of the newer raids, im just not that much of a people person.) ill try and take some day 1 screenshots of the opening area at least. also wrt post campaign!! i loved playing projectile tennis with savathun. all the two queens stuff was great tbh sav is such a fun villian. like yes!! you do owe us nothing and are only going to swoop in to help us bcs we have a bigger threat to deal with!! we can go back to trying to outscheme eachother once this is over!! ( also hey, they brought back adventures! i thought they'd never do that!) also what ive played of the crode camping trip (i forgot the mission name) has been fun. just me and the bois, out exploding screebs. ( then the game crashed so i guess i gotta go play that again lmao) overall i think this expansion is pretty good! i havent even gotten to the seasonal stuff yet, much less some of the regular patrol stuff for the pale heart.

I saw a very interesting play today that was based on Valerie Solanas, the woman who tried to murder Andy Warhol, and her SCUM manifesto. It was two parallel stories : hers and the story of a fictional contemporary feminist group that'd try to enact her anti-men vision by attempting to commit direct violent actions against cis men.

the text itself was very interesting, very rich, not afraid to explore moral dilemmas. the mise en scène was very well done too, especially the sound design, some original songs were created for the production and they were very powertful. I had a good time in the theatre !
