DICK GRAYSON

Dick Grayson is a frat boy in training. He's showy in your attendance, loud and boisterous with his antics. Look at him! spare a little glance his way, and watch him chug two water bottles back to back… That's impressive, right? He craves you soon enough, he wants that dumb high school sweetheart love story, that 'what if' romance, one where they get married in secret because their parents don't approve of their relationship. With Bruce being inadvertent towards his emotional needs he seems to fantasize about being in your arms for a night.

His courting starts after he watches you at lunch. Picking out a snack from the vending machine. He jots this down mentally and stores the information for the next day. He thinks he's sly, sliding your favorite calorie intake across your desk. "One of these bars was stuck between the shelves and the glass, so I figured it was a sign to do a good deed today. I ended up knocking it down with the other one. Anyway, it's all yours." He says brightly as you smile and reach forward for the bar. It's a little crushed and… oddly sweaty.

Dick won't tell you that he paced around outside of the classroom in passing time, clutching the second chocolate bar he had purchased, and not luckily acquired from the vending machine. His friends may call him "Big Dick" but he is nervous as hell. So when you finally look up and thank him with another smile, he almost collapses with relief and takes off in a light jog to his seat. He's so focused on trying to breathe normally that he can't see the smirk you're wearing. You take a bite and hum approvingly before returning to the book open on your lap.

JASON TODD

Jason is like a stray cat. You don't know how to react initially because he's so abrasive. Contrary to popular belief, he is very kind. Alright, you can borrow his jacket to make your way across campus to your next class, but that's only because it's pouring rain. And he doesn't mind helping you with your books (or even giving you a ride home once.) So he… stays close by. He likes hanging out with you, but he wants you to want him to stay. The fact that you seem to appreciate both sides of Jason makes him hopeful. At least a little bit. If he didn't know better he'd say there's something more going on here than just a budding friendship. Or maybe you just find his company amusing? Regardless he's patient though, and he'll wait until you've made your move to make his.

He's content with life if you're around. You're easy on his eyes, soft and gentle with him when you need to be, and so extremely lucky that he let you in. It started with him avoiding you at all costs, he had probably shoulder-checked you once or twice in the hallways without saying a word. Just that stare with the thinly veiled hostility of a moody teenage boy, and now it has progressed to him following you to classes, his worry for you has him waiting outside your building to make sure you’re safe, watching you walk to your car.. It would have been so much easier if he'd tried a little harder to hate you, to loathe your presence in his existence, but he hasn't done either, he lets himself admire how stunning you are and wishes he could be more like you.

He wishes you two would've met as kids when things weren't so complicated. He was soft back then, and he wasn't nearly as cynical and hard as he is now. Maybe then he wouldn't have become the guy that he is today.

Despite everything maybe you could have fixed him.

TIM DRAKE

Tim may be a bit obsessive. He writes your initial and his own in pen, surrounded by crooked little hearts. He spends most of his classes looking at you, thinking about looking at you, making up scenarios he knows will never come true. He saw you spray some type of perfume or cologne on yourself after gym once. He spared no time looking for it, online, in stores, everywhere. By the end of the month he had it. It was a nice scent. It suited you. Yes, its creepy and weird, but he swears its innocent in nature.

His pillow is soaked with the sent.

He knows he's got it bad. But, how can he just… talk to you? He has a perfectly healthy parasocial relationship!

It's drizzling early in the morning. Since Tim shares his first period with you he catches a glance of you, hair lightly dampened, a few waves falling against your cheek. You catch his attention instantly and awkwardly wave at him. It startles him, and he quickly turns away, burying his face into his textbook. He pretends to read the chapter aloud to himself to avoid any further eye contact. Tim looks up at you through his lashes again. He silently tears a piece of paper from his notebook, scribbling something down. He then pretends to get up to blow his nose, silently slipping the paper on the corner of your desk. He walks past you without a word, and sits down with an audible sigh. Your name appears on the paper, accompanied by some sort of lopsided smiley face.

I realised I have a problem with the "Childe has cPTSD" idea that has been getting popularity in fandom, but it's probably more because of my gripe as a psych professional with the concept of cPTSD in general.

It's an understudied disorder and it's not yet in the DSM-V. Therapists use the term because it's better than nothing (they have to treat people regardless of whether we have a comprehensive theory of how humans function) but as it is now it simply clumps together too many things.

It started with a very reasonable thought that prolonged exposure to moderately stressful events can be just as harmful as One Huge Trauma, and also that the effects or prolonged exposure to stress will differ from only experiencing something once.

Sadly, the most common scenario in which a Western person (the type that has access to therapy and gets to talk about it online) can get cPTSD is child abuse. This means in the cases that are studied and discussed cPTSD response to prolonged stress is mixed with developmental trauma (all kinds of insufficient parenting and a child's needs not being met), attachment trauma (not having a stable relationship with a caretaker at a very early age when attachment strategies are formed), relational trauma (any trauma gotten in relationships at any age) and just general reaction to abuse (and all the damage to agency and self-worth that comes from it).

cPTSD of a person who came back from a war will differ a lot from cPTSD of a person who was raised by an abusive parent. There are similarities, sure, and it's important to recognise that a bad family situation can be just as damaging as being in an active war zone (in that sense the term has done more good than harm), but these two people won't have the same self-concepts and coping strategies.

The concept of cPTSD can be very useful if you are trying to understand what is happening to you personally or to explain it to your therapist (or to find a trauma-informed therapist), it isn't bad. But you can't say "this character has cPTSD" and derive meaningful predictions about his behaviour or self-image from it. It's too much of an umbrella term.

So, back to our boy. Bad things only started to happen to him at 14 and it's different from someone being consistently traumatised from an early age.

Does he have hypervigilance, bizarre strategies of self-regulation, at least some amount of dissociation, occasional attention problems and intolerance to helplessness? Yeah, probably, his lifestyle would do that to pretty much anyone. Prolonged stress just does that, doesn't matter how badass someone is. Some negative beliefs about himself are also likely. Difficulty with connecting with others is a given (everyone else lives in a different reality, how would he even begin to connect).

Does he have relational trauma? Also yes, we all do. Some justified guilt and anger over how things went? Not necessary but very possible. Some irrational guilt for things he couldn't control? Again, not necessary but I could roll with that (it's a common response to helplessness. guilt is easier to stomach than the loss of control).

Would he behave like a child abuse victim, thinking himself completely worthless and constantly doubting and pitying himself? I don't think so. He looks like a person who has never been abused in his life. It's very fun to write and I understand the appeal of it (I'm probably occasionally guilty of that too) but it's simply not how he's portrayed in canon.

He wouldn't think of himself like a child of narcissistic parents would either (having to be the best to prove his right to exist). He was long past the age when he could have gotten that type of trauma when Abyss and the Fatui happened to him. Also his resilience comes from somewhere and I think it's from having a loving family. Sure, it wasn't a perfect family (I have a lot of questions for them) and now it's irreparably messed up even more but he does look like a person who was loved as a kid.

SOAPBOX: On Podfics as Transformative Works

So I decided I wanted to write my SOAPBOX on one thing, after going off on a mini Soapbox the day before challenges dropped for Voiceteam and it gave me an excuse to do it. But then I spent a week thinking about where I wanted this to go, and came up with an adjacent-but-different direction to head it in, whoops?

That said, welcome to my Soapbox on Podfic as a Transformative Work. This will include some of my original ideas such as the inherent podficcer desire to embrace chaos that is evidenced by the way we on the whole flock toward things like texting / social media fics and non-traditional narrative formats, and our desire to embrace the challenge of finding a way to bring those stories to life in audio in a way that fully represents the way they appear on the screen, BUT. More than that, at the core, I really want to talk about WHY podfic is a transformative work, because a lot of people—particularly those who aren't familiar with podfic, and haven't listened to much if any of it—don't seem to understand that it is more than just reading aloud the words of a text.

I get it, I do. At its most basic level, that IS what podfic is, right? That's often how we start to explain podfic; my go-to definition is "you know audiobooks? you know fanfic? cool, imagine audiobooks of fanfic." I stand by that; at its most basic level, that IS what podfic is. And yet one of my favorite things to rant about is that podfic is so much MORE than just an audiobook of a fanfic, or at least DIFFERENT/DISTINCT, in the same way that fanfic as a genre is distinct from traditionally published works. Why? Because podficcers have the same freedom and flexibility, due to the nature of fanworks and the fact that they are created for love and joy, not for profit, to get really weird and experimental with what we're making. You don't have to, obviously; you can make a podfic that is more or less an audiobook of a fanfic and it's perfect valid as a podfic AND as a transformative work—I'll get to that more later. But I think the easiest way to see how transformative something like podfic can be is to listen to something absolutely WILD that a podficcer put their whole soul into, be it through ridiculous voicing or over the top effects, and understand that this is an art not bound by the chains of capitalism in its need to be something that will appeal to the largest possible audience. In fact, podficcers don't get very much interaction on our works, a couple of comments on a single pod is a raging hit as far as we're concerned. People have already done great meta on this point this week, so I won't go too far into it beyond saying—we're not in this for popularity, or even feedback (as nice as it can be to get it); we're doing it for fun and joy and community and, yeah, a little bit of chaos.

Sure, you say, that makes sense. And maybe I can see how a really weird podfic is transformative. But ALL podfic?

Yes. All podfic. Let me put it to you this way: have you ever been in a classroom with a teacher who is just the most boring human you have ever had the misfortune of being forced to learn from? I feel like chances are high most of us have, and if you haven't, you've probably at least witnessed it second-hand from some kind of media. Compare that experience with the joy of learning from someone who is really good at teaching—not just at knowing their subject matter, but at engaging their students in a way that makes learning actually enjoyable, whether or not you're equally invested in the subject.

Podfic is like that. You can have Text-to-Speech read something to you, sure, but comparing it to a real person is like… even if you don't like the real person's style, or the way their audio turned out, it's got LIFE in it. THAT'S what makes podfic transformative. A real person is VOICE-ACTING as they bring a text to life in audio, putting in expression and empathy, and THAT is what makes podfic a transformative form of art.

Do you have to like it? No! Many people don't enjoy listening to audio-based stories, or only enjoy them in certain contexts or formats, and that's fine. But it's not the same thing to say "this isn't for me" and "this isn't actually a work that transforms the original in any way because it's just reading the words aloud". To those people: I challenge you to make a podfic. Any podfic. Learn how to record, and how to narrate, and how to edit, and when you're done, see if you've learned anything from the process about what makes this an art. Because it is enjoyable for those of us who do it, but it is a skill that you learn and practice the same way writing and painting and photo editing and a thousand other skills and art forms are. It is human artistic expression, combined with practical creative skills, and it can be so, so magical. From the most simple narration of a fic to the most complicated multi-voice with sound effects and music, every podfic is a work of art, and in my opinion, if a single person bothers to read this and grapple with that idea, fandom will be better for it.

-I don't know why you come during office hours - he murmured - it's not that I'm complaining or anything, I… I enjoy your company immensely, but your grades are the highest in the class - he laughed softly - you're almost better than I was when I was in college and I had exactly the same resume as you

He left the cups on the table in front of you. You took the one that was closest and blew on the liquid a little to cool it down, before taking a small sip.

-There is no need to be modest - he continued - modesty is good, it helps us not to have our heads in the clouds, but don't think that I don't see the results of your hard work - he whispered, drinking from his cup - you take your time to hand in perfect assignments, not like the rest of my students - he observed - you spend your days studying and working, hence your grades are perfect - he said - spending your time on that when you could be going out to party or whatever it is that young people your age do today

-The truth is that there are not many options - you intervened, making him look at your cheek, always avoiding eye contact - going out to party guarantees you a one-way ticket to the incredible station of popularity - you shook your head negatively -

-And you are not interested in accepting that ticket from what I see - he assumed, you nodded -

-I loved it when I told you "what young people do today" - you laughed - basically because you are not old man

-I know- he nodded- I got my master's degree four years ago- he shook his head- anyway you're not here for me to talk to you about my life- he interlaced his fingers, while leaning on the table- What can I do for you?

That question included several answers, which you couldn't say out loud.

-It's about the last exam we took- you began-

-What's wrong with it? –he questioned, frowning-

-You forgot to correct one of the exercises that is worth one point –you said-

-Oh, I'm… I'm sorry, I didn't realize –he apologized, somewhat embarrassed- I was probably doing other things at the same time and forgot to add it to the total score –he said- it won't be a problem, I'll add it right now –he opened one of the drawers and took out a stack of papers that he went through until he found your test –it happens more often than you think –he commented while writing it- most students don't want to come to my office or stay a few minutes after class-

He stopped looking at the test for a moment, until he found the uncorrected exercise. He looked at it for a few moments, before placing his glasses back on the bridge of his nose.

-Wait a moment… -he murmured, placing the sheet of paper on the table while gesturing to you with his head- come here –he asked, his tone of voice was authoritative and kind at the same time, which you had not heard before- you have not used the correct formula –he pointed to the operations that were under the statement- even so, your grade is still very good –he said, tilting his head towards you for a moment- I expected nothing less from you

He put the sheet back in the drawer with the others before speaking again.

-Was that all? –he asked- Do you have any questions about yesterday's class? I know that the principles of forensic science can be a little complicated and…

He stopped to observe you for a moment. He looked at the shape of your back and how you tried to move your neck as little as possible.

-Are you okay? –he murmured- you seem… tense, nervous even –he handed you your cup of coffee- hold it in your hands –he invited- warmth always calms me –he added- maybe the same thing happens to you

You nodded for a moment, trying to focus on the warmth of the cup and not on how the damn glasses he was wearing made his eyes look bigger and bluer than normal.

-Can you… –you swallowed nervously- close the door?

-Sure –he murmured walking towards it to put the latch - I don't think anyone is going to suddenly appear anyway- that's it –he announced- now you can speak freely –he said sitting back down on the chair in front of you- it's okay, you can tell me even if it's nothing related to classes –he said- we've known each other for two years, you've come to each and every one of my lessons without exception, even the ones that were given during after-school hours –he paused- even the ones on Fridays –he murmured- you're always in the front row writing down the most important things. But, you don't ask questions during those talks - he observed -

-It's because I don't want to be the center of attention - you confessed, he nodded leaning back in the chair -

-I see - he murmured - out there you only talk when someone does it first - he explained - but here it's not the same - he whispered - in my classes, I mean - he corrected himself - little by little you've come out of your shell - he observed - you just needed time

-I didn't think it was so obvious - you murmured timidly -

-Just because I've been teaching for a couple of years doesn't mean I don't focus on my students - he added - so… Do you want to tell me what's bothering you? I promise that whatever it is won't leave this room

-Really? - you questioned, he nodded very seriously -

-Of course - he assured you -

Your hands brushed when you handed him the cup. Neither of you moved away. His hand held yours with a gentleness that took your breath away for a moment.

-Your hand- he whispered- is warm, and soft- he observed- and it still shakes a little- he murmured as he gestured for you to come closer- come, let me give you a hug- he said, and you did, you approached and he wrapped you in his arms-

-That's it- he whispered running his hand up and down your back- everything's okay- he murmured as his touch paused for a moment on the small of your back- I never realized how small you are compared to me until now- his husky laugh reached your ears, making a shiver run through you- there's always some kind of table separating us, but now that we're so close, I can rest my chin gently on your head- he observed doing just that- Do you feel calmer now?

You swallowed hard, at the same time that you lowered your gaze to his lips before looking him in the eyes again.

-I want to kiss you- you murmured, overcoming your shyness for a moment-

-Is that so? - he asked, leaving a lock of hair behind your ear- well, when you say it in that kind tone and with that sweet expression that matches him, I don't see how I could refuse

Slowly you approached him, closing the distance that separated you and placed your lips against his.

The kiss was calm and affectionate, as if both of you had wanted to do that for a long time, and now that the moment had arrived neither of you knew how to react.

-You've blushed again, and we've only kissed- he said, his voice dropping two octaves- I wonder if I can make that shade of red turns into a darker one, but I won't do anything you don't want - he whispered - What I said before is true - he murmured - About your brain being precious - he smiled - Although honestly, all of you are precious - he explained - Your personality, your eyes, your smile - He looked at you for a moment - Your body added making the blush on your cheeks accentuate -

-Are you serious? - You questioned in a low voice, he nodded -

-Of course I am - he answered - When have you seen me joke in a serious situation? - He laughed -

-Never - You murmured, losing yourself in the blue of his eyes -

You blinked a couple of times, before resting your gaze on them again.

- Protective to a fault. If anyone so much as tries to hurt his lover most times it's Rodimus with his silly stunts and he gets the full Magnus glare. But he's also conscious of seeming intimidating and tries to moderate it for his lover's sake, and tries not to show how much he worries.

At risk of causing a wave of DP fans to head your way... I've noticed some parallels between the ML fandom and DP (Danny Phanton) fandom.

Both seem very active (even though DP has been over for a while) and seem almost gleeful to take the pieces of lore/potential/implications and completely run with it to a point where it's almost more popular than the original source material.

And yet, Kim Possible a show from around the same time frame as Danny Phantom seems to have faded in terms of fandom. (It’s also possible I haven't found the KP side of Tumblr yet and I am completely missing that part of the site.)

It's interesting to me that in this case shows which either don't realize or are unable to go all the way with their implications seem to have the more lively and active fandoms vs the ones that seem a bit more solid writing wise.

I don't really have a point here. Just find it interesting.

I guess I'm curious if this is a case of me cherry picking examples and declaring causation or whether you've noticed similar trends as well.

(Also my memory is very poor. If I've sent a similar ask that's in the queue, sorry! Please ignore/delete this one. I probably won't even realize it. :))

Generally speaking, the amount of fan content you can find for a given work has a direct correlation with popularity and unexplored potential, not quality. More popular works will naturally get more fan content because more people are thinking about them, but if the work is self contained, then there's not much left to do with it as this graph nicely illustrates.

This is why Kim Possible has 2,341 works on AO3 while Danny Phantom has 23,605 as of this post. It's not that Danny Phantom is the better or more popular show, it's than Danny Phantom has a lot of stuff that never got explored in canon. What does it mean to be half ghost? What would have happened if the series had continued after that massive cliffhanger with Valarie? What happened to Dark Danny? All wonderful questions that people want to answer!

If I try to think of similar questions for Kim Possible I draw a blank even though I watched a lot of that within the past year and it's been almost a decade since I watched Danny Phantom. Kim Possible is simply satisfying in and of itself. I'm sure there are good fics for it, but they're not answering obvious questions raised by the source material. A fact that is amusingly glaring if you go look at the most popular stories in both fandoms to get an idea of what's going on in them. One is mainly pure shipping content, the other is not even though both works had a similar amount of shipping content in canon. Give you one guess which is which. (This isn't a dig, btw! Shipping content is fine! It's what I'm usually looking for when I read fanfic.)

Note that unexplored potential need not be a bad thing. It can be a sign of bad writing or a sign of a well developed world or even just a sign that the work had a lot of hiatuses and people filled that time by coming up with ideas of what might happen next. Lord of The Rings has 56,681 works and I would never dare to call Tolkien a bad writer. He just wrote an incredibly popular and complex world that gave people a lot of room to play around.

I can usually guess if a work I love will have fan content, how much it will have, and what it will primarily be about. For example, I love The Good Place and it got millions of views, but it left no gaps in the story so fan content is going to be pretty sparse. I'm honestly surprised it managed 1,832 fics on AO3 though almost a fourth of those are crossovers so who knows if they're really about the show's cast. The rest appear to mainly be pure shipping content which is not a dig! It just shows you that the show didn't raise a bunch of questions that need answering. The story canon gave us was all we needed from the plot.

The whole 'I hate sans centered AU's' and 'The fandom was ruined by AU's' pisses me OFF.

Let me explain it to you like you're five.

So, when a character is popular... yes?

People like that character more than others... yes?

So when people make fanart... yes?

They make it of that character more often than others... yes?

Therefore since the character is more popular and more known. The character has more fan works. Therefore has more AU's.

The fact people define this shit too pisses me off. I've seen people call Horrortale and Underfell sans centered AU's. I'm sorry what? If you said Dusttale sure. Something New (Killer Sans), sure I can't exactly argue. But calling Horrortale and especially UNDERFELL sans centered? Wild.

I assure you you will live if an artist wants to make an Au centered around sans. You also forget he's typically a simple character to draw compared to the rest. So beginner artists can attempt him easier. Also he was by far the most popular character in the fandom in its infancy, and still is the most popular. LOOK I GET that some AU's are sans centered. But the way you treat them makes you look pathetic or uneducated.

Put it this way, people often see videos saying 'Sans centered AU's bad' and reply 'I'm working on an Au where <insert really uninteresting thing>' and look this is Fine. Be creative, in fact I encourage it. However there's a reason these sans centered AU's are popular. They're creative. They were also made when the fandom had enormous communities on platforms like amino. AU's SPREAD. Plus, if your AU was just writing, no art, it's heavily likely you would be ignored or your au would fade out quickly. These are the principles of the Internet. To stay relevant you need to produce new media that people can consume quickly. Art or animation.

Popular AU's made recently(ish) so past the initial craze of dreamtale,Dusttale and so on. Undertale Last Breath, IDUTSHANE and so on. They have to utilise new ideas or new takes on pre existing ideas. It's hard to make a new original idea that is both good, and fits in with the dynamic. These aus are only popular for a while, then fade into irrelevancy. I would love to see some new popular AU's, but however if you make them without sans in them, or as a background character, just know it's likely your au won't have much of a chance.

There's an oversupply of sans au content because there's an extreme demand for it. It's like complaining that a store sells too much monster energy drink and not enough red bull, when that store sells maybe 5 cans of red bull a year, and 50 thousand cans of monster a year.

And let's not even mention when an artist makes AU content that isn't sans centered, the same people who complain about it, just focus on the sanses themselves. Xtale is a huge example. Because of recent events it's fair to understand the limelight is on Cross (trans coded). But in general I never see anything on any OTHER Xtale characters, even from people I know hold the opinion that they want less sans centric aus.

Also the AU's in general keel the fandom afloat. Sure mischaracterisation is rife, but at some point we have to acknowledge the reality of it's damn near impossible to fix. Always stand up for what you believe in, but understand some times it's not worth the energy.

I'll probably re do this but more professional at some point. Sorry for being all over the place. I just wanted to post something and I was mad at this.

ok ok..what is your most controversial opinion about lightcannon? if you want to share it.

To break the ice, this is mine (delusional): we are close to getting SG lightcannon canonized or the whole SG universe retconned or drastically changed...after what happened to Viktor, Jayce, Ambessa, Warwick and practically all the champions that aren't in arcane and the multiverse redoing my heart hopes and fears at the same time.

Probably that I write Short, Fem, Sane Lux?

I'll preface that it's absolutely fine to write Lux as a 6 foot buff Amazon or write "Crazier" Lux, those are storied tropes in the LC community and completely valid takes that I very much enjoy reading especially when they're done well.

But when I first started writing Ill-Omen's those were such intense fanon in the community that they were essentially treated as canon.

So I sacrificed the tall leggy gangly Jinx and tiny petite Disney princess Lux of the Wild Rift trailer, aka the characters I wanted to write. I did that in order to fit in, because the fanon peer pressure was so strong. But all of those fanons came from other popular LC authors and not from the (current era) source material. They worked beautifully for those authors but that didn't mean I had to follow them, I just felt intimidated so I did, and it diluted my work and made it less 'me' at least at the beginning.

If I have any regrets about my stories, I wish I'd had the stones to stand up for what I wanted to write back in the beginning. I've since gone back and edited things to have more of my voice, but still. Let that be the takeaway. You don't need to pander to other people's canons if they don't work for you, tell your stories in your voice and they will be stronger for it.

I enjoy Lux is Crazier but it's so much Cal's trope, it's such a defining aspect of Flashbangs and NKB, that I don't think I can write that for my Lux without feeling derivative. I came in on newer lore Lux, so while I won't say my various Luxes aren't a little unhinged sometimes, I've aimed for the contrast of Lux and Jinx coming from very different places and needing to do the work to meet each other where they live, even if the endpoint of loving each other whole and complete is the same.

Also it leaves a lot of character development for both of them as Lux slowly cracks and Jinx slowly heals through the support and perspective of the other, it's delicious.

If anyone's wondering, my Jinx is 5'3"ish because I eventually came around on Tiny Skrunkle Arcane Jinx, and my Lux is 5'4-5'ish and athletic but not as tall or as built as Vi.

Because while my Lux is a fit girl who spends a lot of time outdoors, has had basic sword training and regularly rides a horse, she's never been a frontline fighter and will naturally not have the body type equal to a Zaunite scrapper who's been solving problems with her fists since she could walk.

She's also consistently depicted in her art as being at most chest height on Garen and Tianna if not shorter, and at least a head shorter than the average Demacian soldier. Guess Pieter's stone giant genes all went into Garen.

And my partner and I are both Jinx's height, so maybe I'm just all in on short protagonists (Ekko and Ezreal are short kings to me too) because fuck Western media bias, not every cool person has to be tall.

Also the image of smol baby lesbian Lightcannon running hand in hand while tol Cait and buff Vi chase them is precious to me.

A romantic concept of Miguel O'Hara if you can please????

I can try... I'm kinda worried I won't write him how he's meant to be- But we'll see! Sorry if this sounds similar to other fics, I've read some to get motivation but I also did my own research so similarities are unintentional if not a reference. Enjoy :D I hope I got things right.

Yandere! Miguel O'Hara Concept

Pairing: Romantic

Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Obsession, Violence, Paranoia, Overprotective behavior, Trauma, Fear of abandonment/loss, Isolation, Kidnapping, Dubious relationship, Possessive behavior, Biting/Marking, Drugging (venom).

I understand that some people see Miguel as a sadistic yandere.

However, I have to disagree.

I will admit Miguel can have some intimidating moments, yandere or not.

Yet you've got to remember his origins.

Miguel is a broken man who puts up walls to prevent more hurt.

He mad the Spider Society to protect and defend the Multiverse.

He doesn't always like what he has to do but he does it as he feels someone has to.

He's a perfectionist, obsessing over every little detail to make sure he protects others.

He has trauma and may try not to get attached to others to prevent hurt.

Again, however, I will admit Miguel has devious moments.

He replaced a version of himself just to be happy.

That's desperation, that's a disturbing thought process to go through.

Miguel is a broken man...and it shows in many ways it seems.

Based on my research, I think this is my take on Miguel.

In terms of how he meets you, there's many possibilities.

That's the great thing about the Multiverse.

You could be part of the Spider Society, you could be someone he's with in another universe, and that's just the most popular ones I've seen.

They feel like the most plausible ones too.

To keep this a general overview I won't go into much detail about your origins.

Miguel, when he first meets you, most likely does not want to get attached.

If you look at his backstory it's clear why he'd be like this.

He fears losing anyone he's close with and is incredibly stressed about the whole anomaly situation.

He feels he's no longer deserving of having romantic connections, he should dedicate himself to being a defender.

Yet when it comes to his darling I imagine with time you'd crack his protective walls.

Just know, as soon as Miguel warms up to you, you're in too deep.

Due to all of his emotional trauma, Miguel finds himself clinging to your presence.

Regardless on if you accept or not he feels you're his only other chance to feel loved.

As a result... he makes a promise that he's never losing you.

No matter what it takes.

Miguel isn't a yandere who would want to hurt you.

Any "hurt" he gives you is usually emotional and "for your own good".

He'd never intentionally hurt you physically.

He has outbursts at times and is frustrated when he feels you're threatened, but he calms himself so he doesn't hurt you.

He views kidnapping/isolation as a necessary evil to keep you safe.

Most likely keeps you somewhere out of the way in HQ if something like that happens.

Last thing he needs is questions from the other Spiders.

He always tells you he doesn't like isolating you, that he just wants you safe, yet sometimes you wonder if he does like you alone.

Miguel is shown to be more "beast/spider-like" than more Spiders.

In this case, along with the fear of losing you, Miguel probably displays possessive behavior.

He likes feeling you in his grasp as reassurance you're still with him.

He may also like to leave marks on you due to this, but soothes your pain immediately after.

When Miguel feels he has to isolate you he doesn't expect you to follow willingly.

Which is why he plans on using venom to make you compliant.

His venom is said to paralyze victims for a short time according to his wiki.

If you fight him on protecting you he'll make it clear that he's doing anything and everything to protect you.

Miguel is certainly a yandere who thinks what he's doing is right for you.

He's not delusional, he knows what he's doing isn't necessarily "right".

Yet the fear of losing you is strong in him.

Locking you away with just him is the best way to go in his eyes.

Miguel is an extremely stressed man, he's normally cold and stoic due to the walls he puts up.

But he can prove to be a mess of paranoid emotions once he's attached.

If you express anger at his actions, he understands.

He most likely won't change but acknowledges you're right.

When you're sad about his actions instead, hd has a similar reaction.

Except this time he makes an effort to comfort you.

Miguel isn't cold.

He still loves you and just decides to prioritize your safety due to his trauma and obsession.

He makes an effort to show you he loves you.

In anyway he can he tries to make you look past the fact he most likely kidnapped you.

This is how he cares.

Why don't you understand? He's tired of worrying.

Keeping you at HQ for his eyes only puts him at ease.

Leaving Miguel isn't easy, either.

Escape attempts always end in failure.

First of all, leaving HQ alone is a struggle.

With the amount of Spiders in HQ? Yeah... good luck.

Even if you manage to steal a watch, Miguel is still going to track you.

He's skilled at investigating.

Sooner or later he'll find you, track you, and hunt you down.

Miguel's physical capabilities are the best of the best, too.

He's faster, stronger, and skilled in dimensional travel.

There's strength in numbers and he has the Spider Society.

Miguel isn't afraid to drag you back kicking and screaming.

He's incredibly irritated that you won't see his way on things.

What's so hard to understand?

Are you even aware of the dangers in other dimensions? THIS is what he's PROTECTING you from!

I have a feeling no one can talk Miguel out of what he's doing.

Be it when he's first showing signs of possession/paranoia or sometime after he's given in... he doesn't listen to others.

Not Peter B. Parker, not Jessica, no one.

In his eyes it should be his decision to care for you.

Even if there's hardships and disagreements, he'll try and find the warmth he felt near the start of his life through you.

He drowns himself in every kiss, he feels euphoric with every touch.

Miguel didn't want you to be close with him for this reason.

He didn't want pain for both you and him.

Yet now you've broken down his restraint... you've made your home in his mind and heart...

So he's no longer holding back anymore, you're going to be his and he'll have his happy ending.

now, do i personally believe that maya and franziska would actively try to get phoenix and edgeworth together? not really. BUT. i don't see the harm in people writing scenarios in which they would? ik this sounds silly since maya and franziska wingmaning is one of the more popular ace attorney fic tropes, but i feel like recently i've seen a lot of hate towards and and i don't understand why!

think of it this way: maya is phoenix's best friend and like pseudo little sister, they're extremely close, and i'm pretty sure she teases him about his love life AT LEAST once in canon (it could be more, or i could've completely made this up, but i've played the trilogy enough where if i tried i could probably find an example but it's late and i'm tired). anyway with that said, why WOULDN'T she care about them getting together? she's shown in the first game to be pretty invested in "the deal with [nick] and edgeworth" her words, not mine. i'm not one to speak on later games because i honestly haven't touched them in over two years and even then they were a complete blur and i forgot everything except that edgeworth looked really ugly from the front. but. if my memory serves me i don't think their dynamic changed much? i can't see her caring AS much at 28 as she would at 17, because obviously she's grown and matured, but i don't think she'd be completely uninterested like some people say. maybe she wouldn't be wearing comical disguises to spy on them, but i could see her encouraging nick, or idk just telling trucy stuff about their old cases to stir something up.

i think the franziska side of things is where i'm a little more understanding, but also not really. on one hand, i get that she's very well put together and mature seeming. on the other hand, that's only how she SEEMS. i won't get into a whole franziska analysis because this post is already longer than i wanted and no one wants to hear me ramble about her, but she's not really as mature as she seems. anyway, would she care THAT much? the answer may surprise you!

now think of it THIS way: edgeworth is franziska's little brother. despite how she acts sometimes she obviously loves him dearly, and would (probably) just want him to be happy, with whatever foolishness it may endure. phoenix wright is franziska's sworn enemy. she can't stand him and feels as though he has personally wronged her before they even met. absolutely hates his guts (except for when they investigate together then they can be friends). franziska is incredibly smart, but she's clearly not the best emotionally. even with that, though, she seems to understand how important edgeworth is to phoenix ("earthquake blah blah blah" "are you thinking of miles edgeworth blah blah blah"). she kind of just accepts this, even though it implies that phoenix (a man he only recently reconnected with) would be on a similar level of emotional connection as his sister. maybe she doesn't think much about it though. she's just like sure whatever you're his most dear and indispensable friend i don't care anymore. do people really think that, if somehow she came to the conclusion that edgeworth had feelings for phoenix she wouldn't care in any way??? i'm not saying it'd necessarily be positive and all "you go girlfriend!", but to say she wouldn't CARE is so wild. she'd probably be furious, and so maybe she wouldn't wingman. but she does CARE about her brother, and honestly if it were presented to her on the right way she probably would wingman. one "hey franziska. i bet you can't make your brother get with phoenix wright. if they get together without your guidance then that basically means edgeworth beat you btw" and she's suddenly invested. (dramatized, but you get the point)

tldr; maya and franziska are not so nonchalant and cool that they wouldn't care about one of the most significant people in their lives having feelings for their courtroom rival of over a decade. that is all.

I was hoping someone would tag me but I have very many thoughts. This has unfortunately turned into me backstory dumping whoops and it took me a really long time to do. Also has anyone noticed how much ai slop you have to comb through on pinterest these days to get anything real? I'm sorry if I missed something by accident.

What's your OC's go-to aesthetic for a ball? Is it consistent or varied? What's their goal behind this? Are they just trying to fit in? To distract? To mislead?

Ok three seperate timeframes

Pre-canon in Orlais:

Ok so backstory time. Cora spends her time inbetween Inquisition and Trespasser spying in emperor Gaspard's court for Leliana. She poses as a bard (which is a bit of an insane double bluff because technically she is one of those? Though more the writing type than the singing type. I think this works on Gaspard though because he thinks he's in on the secret) and lives in Val Royeaux, sending Leliana updates about what Gaspard is doing/planning so that Leliana can continue her work as Inquisition spymaster. She also sends her updates on Vivienne and her own mother whenever she can.

So with her living as part of the emperor's court, she'll have to attend a lot of balls. I think her style would be based on whatever is popular at the time in Orlais (I'm going sort of off what we see in Inquisition so ruffles, big skirts, frills, large collars and headdresses) but sort of toned down. I think part of her training with Leliana would have included learning what looks good enough on her that she won't stand out for looking unkempt, but also doesn't look so stylish and out there that she stands out for being Too stylish. She needs to be accepted in order to talk to people and learn things, but not memorable. I do think she prefers pastel colours like light blues, pinks and yellows, but likes some embroidery. She has different ones depending on the occasion and who she's trying to be, but her favourite is simple gold and silver. Her hair will always either be up or covered.

Pre-Canon Tevinter:

After Trespasser when Vivienne is made divine and the Circles are reinstated, Leliana sends her to Tevinter to work for Dorian, so she won't have to go back to a Circle. I think here it's less being a bard and more just straight-up spying on people for him. I think most magisters would probab;y have a servant or two accompanying them to parties and such, so it's a perfect way to sneak her in to things like this. Other times she'll pretend to be some visitor from Orlais or Nevarra or Ferelden accompanying him (mostly Orlais, so she can wear her masks). There are times, however, where I think he'd send her alone so they wouldn't be seen together, or to places he didn't want to be seen but still wanted to know what was going on. I think in Tevinter the more you look like a mage the better? So dresses would probably range from looking less or more like mage robes, and they'd probably be more revealing (Which Cora *hates*) since Tevinter is a lot warmer than Orlais? I love some of the King's Landing GOT outfits for her in Tevinter, as well as outfits that look almost mage robey, if that makes sense. I don't think she'd worry about colour or looking good as much as fitting in and projecting a certain image. Her hair is still up or covered.

Post-Game:

Post game she finally gets to pick styles for herself!!! Yay!! Antiva=renaissance italy/spain to me so you bet I'm putting her in Lucrezia's dresses. She still likes pastel colours but I think she also likes wearing gold (and Dellamorte purple) and lots of embroidery. She likes simple cuts and cloth BUT it has to be very high quality. (And expensive, sorry Lucanis). She'll have fur put on a lot of her dresses just to remind everyone that she's actually from the South, and also wear some Ferelden styles (I like a lot of Rhaenyra's dresses from HOTD as examples). Occasionally she'll still put on masks to go to balls, but they'll always be crow masks. She never really gets around to wearing her hair loose in public, but she does start wearing intricate braids, and loves a decoration. She gets more out there with things now that she can actually choose her own clothing to enjoy wearing.

Location

Where are you most likely to fond your OC during a ball? Balcony? Bar? Spying behind privacy screens?

She's drifting, trying to catch snippets of conversation while looking like she isn't. She never really breaks the habit, and I think it's very useful for the First Talon to have someone who's good at that as well. She'll talk to anyone and everyone, or stand close enough to conversations to overhear, pretending to be doing something else. That, or she's playing cards somewhere, which is also really good for information gathering, coincidentally. And winning favours from people. Later on, when it's not her literal job to stay at balls anymore, she and Lucanis will usually leave too early to go do literally anything else.

Dancing

What's their opinion on dancing? Do they have a favourite type of dance?

Ugh, she loves dancing. Too bad she's terrible at it. And when I say that it's like... multiple people have tried to teach her and failed. Leliana even tried but I think both of them were just too impatient to take enough time to really teach her well enough. It's so very important to me that Lucanis is the first person to go... no wait Rook likes dancing and I'm going to teach her how to do it so we can do it together :). It takes him a very long time and he still makes fun of her for being a terrible dancer but when he sees her happy when they waltz together he's like yep. No regrets.

Exocolonist tangent #1: I know writers who use subtext

Spoilers, very significant ones, because we're going to start with what Russians call "speaking names" of the characters, which is the most spoilery thing of all. Obsiously, it's completely out of order, it's a tangent, what did you expect. Naturally, I'm starting the first tangent of the IWATEX Tangent Month with Tangent! How do you name a transparently autistic character? Tangent, you're welcome and fuck you! And you know what? While we're at it, she's also trans! I genuinely love it, I feel so seen! Also, she basically never goes on actual tangents because she's not on that part of the spectrum (probably, I'm not a doctor). You know who *does* go on tangents?

Nomi-Nomi! Short for Nominative Determinism! I'm half-joking, they're actually Nomination, that thing where you're trying to get something but haven't yet (or just didn't, depends on the timeframe). They are eternally Nomination, and that's okay. If we're doing kinning here, I'm very much a Nomi-Nomi who wants to be a Tangent, but my presence on this joyful website should say it all on its own. There is also another word that starts with "dys" that's popular on this website, but that's an actual hot take so I won't be touching that. Rex is a dogboy. I feel stupid writing this, but I started going on big Tangent energy, and now I cannot stop. I now know that Basorexia is also "a strong craving for kissing", but come on. Marzipan... I feel like that's where I'm really grasping. Like sure, she's sort of sweet on the surface (and also deep in her heart, funny that), and also cyanide tastes like almonds, but that's about it. And I have to be missing something with Tammy, maybe because I haven't completed her arc yet. Why artificial sweetness? Is her homely cheerfullness actually a mask that hides her deep anxiety, internal and external? Yeah, it's probably that. Congruence doesn't quite count, she's been constructed and given a name at the same time, unless she is an emergent AI, which I don't think she is, but yes, harmonious communication, got it. Sym doesn't count for the exact same reason, even if he has a bit more freedom in what he chooses to do. Noctilucent, surprisingly, counts, unless I don't know something about them, and they were specifically programmed to act during the Glow. Finally, I feel kinda stupid even mentioning Sol, our protagonist (who to me will always be Solana, even though they probably weren't named after Valerie Solanas by the devs), but I'll have to do it for completion's sake. Everything revolves around the sun. There, I said it.

How Louis and Lestat spend Halloween with you

So I'm decently into the first season of IWTV TV show, I'm on episode six of the first season, and I want to write about these gay vampires so bad, but I don't want to do anything too high stakes, so I'm just going to do a silly Halloween thing for them. Sorry if this is OOC for either of them. I'm basing the time around the late 1910's-ish.

Louis De Pointe Du Lac

Because Halloween has only really been celebrated in the States for less than 30 years, Louis isn't too keen on it. He sees all of the greeting cards in stores and costume parties everyone throws, he thinks it's a little silly, but if you want to play around with it, he'll oblige.

If it were up to him, he wouldn't really do anything to celebrate, he sees it as just another holiday made up by some humans. But when you beg him to go to a party with you, he'll go, but he won't dress up.

I think he'll still be lighthearted about the whole thing. Just letting you have your fun dressing up and going to parties with him, doing this and that. He doesn't take it too seriously, but he won't explicitly tell you that.

If you suggest decorating the outside of the house for Halloween he'll slightly protest that. "Come on now, we ain't gotta do all that." He'll probably say. Louis already feels anxious about his standing in New Orleans at is it, so drawing more attention to himself and you probably isn't what he'll want to do.

But he'll find ways to compromise. If you want to wear a costume he'll hire a seamstress who is willing to work at night to come and make you whatever costume you'd like to be, within reason of course.

By now Louis has learned to be careful with who he chooses to eat for his dinner. Only going after those who no one will miss, or notice that they've gone missing, he's learned his lesson, and he won't make the same mistakes again.

That being said he's going to use you prancing around town going to Halloween parties as a way to hunt. If he grows bored of the party he'll leave you on your own to have your fun while he finds a bite to eat.

Overall Louis isn't that big of a Halloween fan. He doesn't hate it, but if given the choice, he wouldn't exactly engage with it either. But because his beloved enjoys this holiday so much, he's willing to do this just for you.

Lestat De Lioncourt

Lestat is a dramatic ass bitch. He's French, blonde, has a bob, and is bisexual, it's in his nature to be dramatic. But that being said I think he's indifferent about Halloween.

He doesn't hate it or anything, but he thinks it's just another human holiday that he could go without. But because you love it so much, he's willing to celebrate it with you.

Lestat is very old, and French, and to my understanding in France Halloween isn't celebrated on mass like how it is in the United States, so if that's true now I'm sure it's true back then.

So as Lestat sees Halloween rise up into this kind of a holiday he'll tease you about enjoying a holiday that just now became popular, but he ribs you about most things in general. It's just in his nature.

Because he's Lestat you two will be invited to many Halloween parties, and since he enjoys parties in general, he'll be happy to go with you.

I think he enjoys getting dressed up just for the hell of it, so while you wear a costume for a Halloween party, he'll just wear one of his fancy suits. But this is also a good excuse if someone asks him why is fingernails look like that or some other question about his appearance. He can pass it off as a Halloween costume.

Like Louis, Lestat takes this as an opportunity to hunt as well. He's not one to grow bored of a party easily, but if you two are walking around on Halloween night and he happens to find the perfect someone to eat, he can't deny himself that.

Like Louis I think he'll not want to decorate for Halloween, not because he doesn't want to draw attention to himself, but because he thinks the decorations are a bit tacky.

"Oh come on mon chéri. These decorations look like a child cut shapes out of some black paper. We can't hang these up for everyone to see."

Penny would make a whole world appear just for you. He is not as powerful within the hospital as he’d normally be, but he could still make a pretty good illusion for you.

He’d probably make you see what you want and make sure you have as much fun as possible. He’d dig into your head for all of your most personal desires.

He’d also take as many opportunities to know you better and satisfy his curiosity as to why you’d ever want him too.

Penny *tilts his head curiously at you* : "Humans are so odd. Your hearts beat so loudly when you are afraid…But, yours has a different sound to it."

You *surprised* : "Really ? How does it sound ?"

Him *presses his ear against your chest to hear it closer and closes his eyes* : "…Different." *giggles* "Good different."

Arts and crafts. Jason love carving wood and making bird houses. He brought his passions with him when he first entered St Louis. He’d be excited to show you his masterpieces and show you how to do it.

You’d be sitting side by side while using your hands to try multiple different shapes, but would be careful as to not let you get hurt with the knife when you’d try to carve things.

Jason *smiles proudly while showing you his last wooden piece of work*

Jason isn’t comfortable sharing anything about himself so…It’d be a huge honour. He’d also show you his collection of frogs and let you pet them if you want.

He’d also hold your hand and show you his face if you’d want.

Jack is a pretty standard guy when it comes to dating. He was kind of the popular kid and did date a lot in his younger years.

He’d normally go for the classic cinema and restaurant. But, as he is trapped in the hospital…He’d do with what he’s got.

Netflix and chill.

He’d ask the other slashers not disturb the both of you as you take over the TV room and eat snacks together.

Jack *pretending to be yawning before lowering his arm over your shoulders to caress the skin with his thumb*

You *smile knowingly* : "Really ?"

Him *smiles and shrugs* : "…Hey. Am a big fan of the old technics…is it working ?"

You *smile before leaning back against him* : "~Maybe."

Pennywise would let you drag him anywhere, but he’s the type to not like big crowds so…the fact that he can’t go out won’t really be a problem.

He’d be just as happy staying inside and have some time with you. But, don’t expect him to have many date ideas.

Pennywise never dated anyone before, so he’d just let you decide or let you sleep on his lap. Tops.

However, he may sing you to sleep.

And his voice is really soothing when he hums while rocking back and forth on his rocking chair.

Pennywise *starts humming while holding you close and stroking your hair*

You : "…I thought you didn’t like people touching you ?"

Him *smiles* : "Guess you must be the exception, huh dollface ?"

Norman is a gentleman. He’d be holding you and gently swing you back and forth in his arms.

He’d be dancing a waltz with. Or cooking you a good meal. His mother taught him how to be a good cook and to always be as respectful and nice as he can be.

So, he’d also be the type to buy you dinner and buy scented candles and roses for the occasion. And he’d always ask you if you’d had a good time at the end.

Norman *holding you close* : "Was it alright ?"

You *smile and wrap your arms around his waist* : "Perfect."

He’d then smile and let out a relieved sigh.

Norman was taught to be perfect. He would be devastated if you didn’t have fun or didn’t enjoy your time with him.

Freddy can date. But, the dates he went on in the past weren’t exactly heartfelt. He just never got emotionally connected with someone enough to care.

So, he’d try simple at first.

Freddy would either invite you to get a drink or offer to take a look at his garden. Let’s not forget he used to be a gardener. So, he does love flowers.

He’d then wait until it gets dark to ask you if you want him to try something on you.

Freddy never used his powers for anything else than pain or to kill. So, he’d be nervous when first trying to think of the perfect dream date.

Freddy *smiles nervously before taking your hand* : "Trust me ?"

You *smile back* : "Always."

He’d then get inside your head and put his plan into motion. He’d be careful not to hurt you of course and try to make it as perfect as he can.

Because he knows you trust him. And that is something Freddy never got from anyone but the kids he used to love…before they betrayed him.

Bo : "…Beer ?"

Bo is a simple man. It’d normally be a truck ride and drinking beer while looking at the sky, or at whatever is around.

But, as he can’t really leave the facility…he’d just ask you to join him in the courtyard of the hospital to have some s’mores and look up at the sky.

No conversation necessary. But, he’d be happy either way.

Bo : "Thanks fer…Ya know…Sayin’ yes to the whole thing…"

You *smile and shrugs* : "No need. Believe it or not…I like hanging out with you, Bo."

Bo *is stunned before chuckling and handing you a cold drink of your choice* : "Whatever you say, darlin’…"

Bo would be happy to hear it, even if he wouldn’t believe it at first.

Because Bo has always been the failure of his family.

So, why would you ever like his company ? But, he’d let himself dream for a bit. Just for a moment.

Brahms would give you his favourite toys and ask you to play with him. He’d also share his favourite snacks with you and watch cartoons with you.

Brahms is a child at heart and he’d be happy to do anything with you, as long as he spends time with you.

He’d also insist on staying with you for the night.

Brahms *holds you close and starts breathing deeply* : "Nice…day ?"

You immediately understood what he was asking and hugged him back.

You : "Yes. I had a great day. Thank you, Brahms."

He was very happy to hear it and cuddled you closer—even letting you take a peek at his face. He’d become very clingy very quickly.

Brahms has a big fear of being a disappointment and abandonment. So, once he knows you like him ? There’s little chance he’d ever leave you alone.

Michael *A…date ?*

He’d be surprised and even a little nervous at first. Love is a tricky business for Michael, since he technically killed all of the people he ever cared about.

So, he’d be a little worried you’d end up with the same fate.

So, even making him agree to go on a date with you would be tricky.

Michael *frowns and sighs before taking your hand*

You *smile hopefully* : "Is that a yes ?"

Michael *nods after a while*

He’d then lead you to the kitchen and have a little cooking date with him. He knows how to handle a knife and was advised early on to find an activity which would soothe him. He found cooking.

But, cooking with you was different. It felt…better.

Seems like the bogeyman can get lonely too.

Unfortunately, Hannibal Sr. is considered too dangerous to leave his cell most of the time, as he arrived after all the others to St Louis.

So, he’d be either asking you to put on some music for him or to read to him. Two of his favourite things.

Hannibal Sr. *smiles as he tilts his head left and right to the music*

You *smile as you silently observe him* : "Tell me…Why did you ask me on a date ? I mean…You’re always in there. It seems pointless."

Him *stops tilting his head before opening his eyes slowly and smiling at you* : "But, that is precisely the game, my dear. Anticipation makes the deal all the sweeter…"

You : "So…You would rather wait and watch me all day rather than going out on an actual date ?"

Him *chuckles* : "Of course not, my dear…But, even if I never was set free…Spending a lifetime just watching you would be enough for me."

You stared at Hannibal Sr. for a while and he didn’t break eye contact for a second. He had just confessed that he’d be okay with just watching you until the end. And somehow, you believed him.

there's a lot of reasons more people aren't into yuri that are troubling to consider, but equally, I genuinely think it cannot be understated how much of it comes down to most yuri being boring as hell. Like truly. I've been reading the front page of Dynasty Scans like it was the newspaper for 15 years I am not exaggerating I can show you the download file data 15 years.

You know what the complaint about yuri by yuri readers was back in 2009?

Don't get me wrong, Yuri has grown a LOT in that time, to the point that most people today wouldn't even understand a Maria-sama reference if it were dropped in front of them (thank God). It's expanded and evolved to encompass more stories about adult women, wider varieties of scenarios, a greater acknowledgement of real life lesbianism, and is more comfortable showing girls kissing with tongue and having sex.

Yuri Manga is maybe the best is it's ever been, and it's also getting the widest readership it's ever had in the English speaking world. The titles we carry at work are always on back order with long queues, and, when I've asked them, most weebs of all gender or sexualities report keeping up with at least a few Yuri series.

At large though? Most of it is still really boring. That's not a bad thing necessarily. I like it because it goes down easy. For the most part any series you pick is gonna be pretty chill. Even shit from Sal Jiang which is PRETTY EDGY for yuri is a pretty breezy read. More serious ones like How Do We Relationship? cover some pretty real subjects about how intimacy is actually quite difficult even when both of you love each other, but it's not like... Exciting. Yuri isn't where you go to pump your fist or get perched on the edge of your seat.

So when the comparison is made to yaoi, well, I mean, have you READ any yaoi? Even in some of the more restrained titles those boys are likely to be sucking and fucking balls and all within the first volume or two. There's gonna be drama, intrigue, shit is gonna get messy, passions are gonna get heated, clothes are gonna be ripped off, people are gonna get sold to One Direction, it's stuff you can sit down with a bowl of popcorn with you know? Stuff you can message your friend and gush Hey Can You BELIEVE? A lot of it is pretty trashy, but that's the appeal. The generic state of yaoi is torrid and exciting and sexy. Ultimately, as a species many of us like to see pretty people fuck. In yaoi you'll get that. In yuri you won't. Nothing wrong with that, but it is gonna be a major contributing factor to their relative popularity.

It's also worth making the comparison to hetero romance manga, which has undergone a renaissance of it's own in recent years. There's now a whole meta around crafting a handful of mean shitty grouchy dysfunctional bully women and flinging them at the protagonist of the day who, unlike in years past, may actually have a face and personality. Most of these are also very trashy and truly scrape the bottom of the bucket in terms of writing.

AND YET?

I would bet money on the fact that you'll have heard of these women and probably even have a good idea what they're like without ever having touched a page of their manga.

I'm sorry but the straights are whipping donuts around the yuri girls in terms of delivering a wide variety of weird compelling fucked up women. How many yuri leading ladies by comparison can you point to as standout recognizable characters even divorced from their story? There's definitely a few, but not many. I'm not talking quality or depth of writing, I'm talking straight up pure recognizability. There are many beautifully written women in yuri, now more than ever. I can't think of many who'd like, get a figure made or have their face splashed on merch, though.

I don't really have a conclusion here. I love Yuri a lot, but at the end of the day this is just kinda the state of things right now.
