“Bzzzt-tzzz-trtttt-ktktkt” Finally found a Turret/Probot playset with all parts intact and for a reasonable (two figure) price! Back in the days I literally had everything Star Wars that was ever produced by Kenner until 1985 and available in Central Europe, with the exception of most of the playsets, as I somehow wasn’t into them as a kid. So I am happy to discover this particular set only now, decades later. I am particularly fond of the Probot which, despite its obvious off proportions, still looks so good and has just the right amount of articulation. The stake on which the Probot sits is white instead of transparent, which works surprisingly well. It is connected to a lever, which when pulled, turns the stake around its vertical axis while dropping it a few mms downwards, which results in the Probot to fall off. I guess I found these lever mechanisms silly back then but now I just enjoy them for what they are and am happy when they are still intact. The turret is simple but something I sure would have loved as a kid, as it has a door on the side and a hatch on its top, so that you can have figures go in and out and sit on the gun controls. The gun can be swiveled with a clicking sound, Artoo Detoo style. The snow and ice ground is molded nicely. I am also glad that all stickers are still complete and sit tight and as a special bonus I got another Rebel Soldier as part of the deal. Meet Y-33T, the probe droid turned floating arsenal! This highly murderous droid happens to be one of my newest characters for yet another campaign i’m in. Currently detained for a failed murder attempt, she’s stuck on a prison ship headed towards a prison colony far far away near the edge of the universe. 

Although that WAS the plan before a clone trooper in max security decided it was high time to attempt a break out, thus creating the perfect distraction for Y-33T’s cellmate to free them after finding the hidden knife they still had.

One of my favourite artists is Ralph McQuarrie, the concept artist responsible for much of the design work seen in the original Star Wars films.

They say one of the best ways to learn is by imitation - so that’s exactly what I’ve been doing! As I read through the enormous book on McQuarrie’s work, I’ve been making little sketches as I go. 

Having just finished work on a technically complex VFX sequence, it’s been pretty cathartic to get back to the drawing pad. :)
