one thing that 122 has highlighted to me is that sskk's lack of understanding is the only thing that hindered them until now.

akutagawa sought to understand atsushi, but was still caught up with his own reason to live and could not comprehend a world where somebody else had a deadly ability but could be treated so kindly. once he understood atsushi, and understood the reasons he wished to fight or go on missions, he trusted him with rashomon and even sacrificed himself to ensure the 'better' man went ahead.

whereas atsushi, up until 122, meets akutagawa and focuses on why. why was akutagawa always like this. why is it always dazai that akutagawa focuses on. why does akutagawa even help atsushi. why did he save atsushi. it's never clicked in his mind that all of these things could be linked - or even, that akutagawa is just as human as atsushi is.

now the puzzle is complete in atsushi's mind, he understands. he knows the answers to why akutagawa has done all of the things that he did, and he knows why he and akutagawa are meant to work together. he gets it. he understands.

Akutagawa wondered "why did you protect me?"

And that's just...sad

It's sad that they're so doubtful of the other's feelings. Atsushi doesn't feel like he deserves to be loved, and although he's connected to Akutagawa and they have a trust that runs deeper than words, I think he's scared that Akutagawa doesn't care for him, and he doubts and doubts and doubts

We don't know the full canon reason on why Akutagawa saved Atsushi, but we know it's because he *cares*, but Atsushi doesn't know that yet

I don't think that Atsushi doubts Akutagawa's strength or abilities, or his capacity to care for others. I think Atsushi doubts how lovable he himself is, he thinks he's not worth loving, not worth anything

And it's similar with Akutagawa, he probably thinks whatever he feels towards Atsushi is one-sided, and maybe he even fears that Atsushi hates him (although he obviously doesn't 😔)

They've been abused and traumatized emotionally so much that I think it's hard for them to realize how much they care for and about each other

I'm sure there will eventually be a chapter or two where Atsushi and Akutagawa can finally talk, and I can't wait for that because it'll really show their combined perspective on who are they are together

Atsushi is terrified of being alone. Being abandoned and by himself is something he's always known, ever since he was a child. The Headmaster was never there for him, nor were any of the children at his orphanage. Not only is being alone his fear, it's also his reality

Until recently

In chapter one, Atsushi thinks about how no one would care if he died, and we all know that he thinks he doesn't deserve to live (and he strives to save people to have a reason to live), but someone DOES care

It's Akutagawa

Akutagawa can't live without Atsushi, Akutagawa cares about him and needs him. Akutagawa's desperate to get Atsushi back. Akutagawa very much cares if Atsushi dies, and will even fight a literal god to return Atsushi to him

Right before the fight with Fukuchi, Atsushi's struck with a panic attack from being alone. There's no Dazai, no Kyouka, no Kunikida, or anyone by his side, even Ranpo left

And then Akutagawa shows up

They might bicker and fight with each other, but every time Akutagawa comes in and stands by Atsushi's side, just like a knight coming to protect and fight

Even their fighting dynamic is where Akutagawa protects Atsushi by using Rashomon in the back whilst Atsushi attacks through the front (if they're fighting together without a Singularity)

Atsushi's always felt abandoned and unwanted and alone, and Akutagawa is the person who vows to never leave his side. They're each one half of a soul

Akutagawa is the person who will tell Atsushi he's not alone, Akutagawa will be the person Atsushi can rely on, and Akutagawa knows what it's like to lose Atsushi now and because of that he's never letting go of Atsushi again

Atsushi's been told all his life that he's not worth loving and doesn't deserve to live, and Akutagawa proves Atsushi's fears wrong

Neither of them are alone anymore, because they have each other at their sides

I watched shin ultraman a few days ago i haven't stopped thinking about it I've listened to m87 nonstop my feelings about shin Ultraman is so deep that i can't find the right words to say everything but this is the gist of it it's just so *clutches chest* special to me
