Reaction between positively charged species and negatively charged humate sites (Fig. 12.4). The substrate in the example in Fig. 12.4 is atrazine, a widely used herbicide in the triazine class. Under typical environmental conditions (pH < 8) the atrazine molecule is positively charged due to protonation of one of the ring nitrogens and this allows for reaction with the carboxyl groups of the HM.
