Graced with one of the most iconic album cover photos ever, taken by her then partner Jean-Paul Goude, this is Grace Jones’ first compilation album, released in 1985 after the success of Slave To The Rhythm. It contains tracks from 6 of her 7 previous studio albums, the exception being Muse which clearly nobody liked. But here there’s something for everyone to enjoy – her early Hi-NRG disco era: I Need A Man and Do or Die; the reggae/dub tracks My Jamaican Guy and The Pretenders’ Private Life; she also covers Roxy Music’s Love Is The Drug, though sadly her genius take on The Normals’ Warm Leatherette isn’t included, neither is her cover of Iggy Pop’s Nightclubbing. But what we do have, albeit on an extremely brief ‘greatest hits so far’ album, is essential. Arguably her best two songs are Pull Up To The Bumper and Slave To The Rhythm, which was nearly the next hit single for Frankie Goes To Hollywood post-Relax, but with Trevor Horn’s exquisitely tight production, it is absolute perfection with Jones’ dramatically deadpan voice. Other highlights on here are La Vie en Rose. All 7.5 minutes of it. Then there’s her reworking of Astor Piazzolla’s Libertango which, like the former track, includes lyrics in French and conjures up Jones’ association with the nightclub scene in New York in the late 70s/early 90s. But one of my favourites, another cover, she has made entirely her own: Walking In The Rain, with its lyrics of “Feeling like a woman, looking like a man” it could have been written for her. There’s no one quite like Grace Jones, and there will never be again. Thank you for bringing androgyny to the masses.
