before i even knew i had a thing for longlegs there was just something about his hands……..the scene where he sings and just moving his hands… whew 🥵
I am RIGHT THERE with you my anon pal. i have a thing about hands to begin with but Dale's are fuckin HOT!!!
Like, just imagine them on your waist...he'd put them there gently at first while he leaned into kiss you. But then he'd start getting rougher and grabbing you harshly as the kiss moved into other territories.
And don't even get me started on how perfectly his hands go around your throat. He would love to keep his hand there all the time, whether he was actively choking you or just holding his hand there, feeling your pulse under his thumb.

———
Finding a window to get through had been the easiest part. Soundlessly making his way into your room not much harder. He’d already wandered aimlessly through your home when you weren’t there, leaving with a few souvenirs. But this time there was purpose to his visit. He wanted to see you, without you being able to step away when he got too close for comfort.
Standing in your doorway, he could see the gentle rise and fall of your chest from under the covers and had to steel himself to not wake you. As he stepped closer, his breath hitched at the view of your sleeping face, almost unable to control his excitement. Inching even closer with practiced ease, he knelt down to face you, wanting to take in as much detail as possible. The fine hairs dusting your skin, the light hum of your breathing, your closed eyes shifting. What could you be dreaming? Naively, he thought, he wished it was of him. The most you’d acknowledged him was a polite smile and short replies to whatever thought he blurted out when he saw you. Still more than anyone else had bothered in a long time. You had laughed once, more than just a courteous huff, he had made you properly laugh. Every night since he had lain awake thinking of ways to do it again.
And now he was here with you. This close, the smell of you was so much stronger than what lingered on his growing collection of your clothes. Ghosting his hands ever so slightly over the curve of your hip through your covers, he resisted the urge to claw into you and never let go. Instead, his other hand dropped down to palm at his growing bulge. Taking deep, slow breaths to steady himself, he let his hand travel up your torso and over your chest. His fingertips reaching up for your neck, where he was sure he could see your pulse.
You stirred abruptly. Huffing and readjusting in your sleep. He jumped back, hiding behind the doorframe again. Unsure how much more it would take to wake you, he pulled his fly back up reluctantly and crept out the way he came. After a miserable walk back to his parked car, he slid into the driver’s seat and reached into his pocket. The underwear you had worn today and tossed onto the top of your laundry - he smiled giddily as he brought it up to his face. Inhaling deeply, his other hand raced back down to his aching dick, making quick work of freeing himself. It didn’t take long for him to finish, thrusting erratically up into his fist and spilling across his knuckles. Taking a few last breaths, he took your underwear from his face and wiped the dashboard clean of his mess. Then he folded it neatly, putting it carefully in the glovebox. Key back in the ignition and music on, he pulled onto the road, already planning his next visit.
———
Through the crack in the door he watched you. Your head turned away, he could just see the side of your face and your outline under the blanket, but that was enough. The light from your TV casting a glow over you, dim enough for you to not make him out even if you did turn around.
Just like every other time he found himself in your house, he couldn’t help but let his hand wander to palm at himself, not willing to risk the sound of unbuckling his belt. Rocking his hips into his hand as he kept watching you. Images of you replacing his hand ran through his mind. Your mouth, your hands, anything. He thought of you standing from where you lay now, walking right up and dropping to your knees begging to take care of him, wanting to make him feel good.
Still on your sofa, you giggled at something on the screen and he cursed himself for missing what caused it. Biting down on his free hand to keep quiet, he pressed his palm down firmer, ignoring the sting of friction. The hours he’d spent hiding while you went through your at evening routine meant he was already close. After all that time waiting for release even this felt overstimulating, tears streaking down his face. Your face turned ever so slightly more towards him, he could make out your smile. As much as he adored it, he couldn’t help but imagine wiping it off your face. Gripping your hair and making you watch him come apart, showing you the effect you had on him. Watching your mouth fall open while he fucked you and hearing you cry out for more, tears streaked down your face while you beg for him. That was enough to send him reeling, the tang of his blood in his mouth as he curled in on himself and bit down harder. Taking in slow stuttering breaths in an attempt to stay silent, when could stand he leant back against the wall out of sight. Pretending that instead of your cold hallway, he was curled up with you under your blanket.
After a short while you rose from your spot and shuffled along to your room. Creeping out of your way, he couldn’t help but grin as he watched your sleepy face from the other end of the corridor. From a few feet away he carefully took note of all your bedtime rituals, and finally came to rest against your doorway when the lights were all off. He waited patiently until your breath deepened and he was sure you were asleep to step lightly up to your bed, kneeling to bring himself closer to your face. Reaching out slowly, he touched his fingertips to your face, gliding over the skin of your cheek gently. So soft under his calloused hands, he suppressed a laugh, almost not believing where he was despite this being far from his first visit. Far from even his first time touching you. Lost tracing patterns lightly across any skin he could reach.
Minutes turned to hours without you stirring, he thought you must know his touch by now. Still kneeling despite the growing ache in his knees, he inched even further forward. Holding his breath and laying his head lightly on the space next to your head, eyes blown wide as he watched for any sign of you waking. After several more moments of calm, he relaxed into the softness of your pillow, ignoring the strain of the odd angle. Too wrapped up in you to care about anything but your soft breaths fanning over his face. Once again he lost track of how long he stayed frozen like that, deep in the fantasy of waking up to you beside him, getting to climb in next to you every night. Until the first sounds of birds started, and the room began to lighten. He peeled himself from your pillow and stood, taking one last long look at you before he crept away once more.
———
Hours later, as you rifled through your post, you noticed a small plain envelope unsealed with no address. You pulled out a card, the faint waft of a floral perfume coming with it. On the front was a cherub surrounded by hearts, opening it up, you found a string of carefully inscribed but unreadable symbols.

Day 24
Dervahl’s Camp
Tumblr media
Set off at dawn and picked myself up another mount from a nearby Charger herd. I left the other one outside Pitchcliff, too far to call. I wish I could get my Focus to call it over somehow by connecting to the machinery left by the override module. Maybe I can figure something out.
Tumblr media
I explored the area to the north a little, but was spotted by a Stormbird circling overhead. I used the opportunity to try overriding it. It took a long time for the module to work through the huge machine, but soon the Stormbird was glowing blue and utterly docile. Having the opportunity to watch it up close without fear of attack was amazing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I rode back south to Pitchcliff to find the settlement under attack by a flock of Glinthawks. I joined the residents and guards to take them out, tying them down to strike or piercing their chillwater cores to douse them in frost. Apparently they’d been attacking all throughout the night, exhausting the village. I went to the mayor of Pitchcliff, its leader, to ask about the attack.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was convinced that a Carja was behind it, using the opportunity to complain at length about dealing with them, but he had no proof. I was a little put out when I discovered a Carja really was behind it, but not intentionally. His name was Shahavad, and I found him fiddling with a machine lure, unable to turn it off. It had no simple switch like the lure back at Daradi’s estate, so I stuck a spear through it instead. Worked just as well.
Tumblr media
Shahavad assured me he had no intention of calling the Glinthawks, but had just happened upon the lure at an Oseram encampment in the north eastern mountains, some way from a makeshift camp of his own. There was a passage there, but an avalanche had destroyed it. From his account and the data on my Focus, seems a Stormbird was the likely culprit. I prepared for that possibility. I was inclined to believe Shahavad too—he seemed a bit clueless, air-headed, and very fond of his own voice, but not malicious. I agreed to track down the source of the lures since it sounded like more of Dervahl’s work to me. I elected not to inform the mayor Ralert of what I’d found. I had a feeling he wouldn’t believe Shahavad’s innocence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I rode across the valley to the start of the mountain climb, trekking past the camp then forging a perilous climbing route through a frozen ravine. At its height, I took out the Longlegs, Bellowback, and Watchers roaming the area, following signs of human construction and the pulse of the lures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was more than a camp, there were permanent structures of Oseram make. I could have probably snuck around and disabled the lures. The Stormbird wouldn’t have had cause to stay around after that; could have overridden it too, but I went for the kill instead.
Second Stormbird down, and this time I was prepared. Tearblasted the casing on its storm cannon, tied it down, two blaze explosions from its canisters, one after the other, staggering it flaming in the snow. Then for the cannon; hard points crammed onto my bowstring three at a time to pierce its core. No more shock blasts. Tied it down, then the chillwater canisters, loosing more hardpoints in its eyes, wings and underbelly. Down in no time, just as the snow storm cleared.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Destroyed the lures and found a message left by the camp’s owner. It was Dervahl after all, and he’d left the lures here in an attempt to ward off reconnaissance from Marad’s men in Pitchcliff. They must have been closing in on all his camps. Could even be more of them in the area.
Tumblr media
I headed back down the mountain and to Pitchcliff as night was falling to give Ralert the good news, leaving Shahavad out of the story. Got his thanks and rich rewards. I’m making good impressions everywhere. Should come in handy if my seeking ever takes me further north into the Claim.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I spent the night in Pitchcliff, getting to know the locals and learning more about life in the Claim. Set down to rest soon after. The more I think about it…I should go back to Meridian before returning east. Who knows where the trail will take me after the Grave Hoard. I know the Cut is just north of the ruin as well. All that talk of spirits and demons and corruption, knowing what I do now of Hades…it makes Banuk lands seem even more interesting. And there’s Sylens to consider. I can’t trust him.
Hey, you reading this? Of course you are.

TALIA  BALFOUR                AKA:  THE  DOG  TOOTH.

background.
you’re  not  a  miracle;   you’re  barely  a  statistic.     pink  fruit  from  a  round  womb.     grown  at  a  hill’s  crest,   a  strand  of  wet  grass  below  the  peach  tree,   overlooking  a  herd  of  sun-dried  cows.     no  one  would  notice  your  cotton  cradle.     no  one  but  the  stars.     and  your  mother’s  eyes  do  not  glisten  upon  watching  your  first  blink.     nor  your  first  day  at  school.     nor  your  first  ballet  recital.     without  a  picture,   you  wouldn’t  even  know  she  was  there.     you  forget  her  youth   ––   in  your  wet  baby-toothed  way   ––   for  there’s  nothing  to  chew  from  her.     bent  from  its  frame,   your  memory  holds  a  father’s  smile,   and  his  heavy  hand  upon  your  lithe  shoulder.
the  eve  of  your  fourteenth  birthday,   your  mother  cups  your  jaw  in  both  hands.     splayed  fingers  brush  against  your  slow  pulse.     your  breath  dampens  her  skin.     you  feel  it,   now,   more  than  she  did.     her  warmth  spilled  across  your  neck  like  air-thickened  blood.     this  is  before  the  second  step-mother,   right  at  the  precipice  of  your  first.     watch  him  for  me,   your  mother  says,   watch  him  at  night  for  me.     for  me.     almost  too  easy,   your  mother  would  say.     a  simple  kiss  at  their  temple,   and  a  child  remembers  their  mother.     quiet  malice,   salted  to  taste,   by  your  father  forgetting  to  call  you  his  favourite  girl.     and  there,   the  axe  earns  its  first  swing.
flesh  is  sweet  and  bought  hostility  is  sweeter.     levied  by  her  parents,   held  like  a  serrated  knife.     where  love  should  be  milk-bathed  and  pat  dry,   your  definition  curdles  into  a  tight  smile.     rehearsed  in  the  dark  mirror  of  another’s  pupil.     by  your  twenties,   you  reach  a  third  step-mother.     and  yet,   there  is  only  one  that  you  call  father.     the  game  loses  its  fresh  scent   –   stale  like  wrinkled,   doughy  hands   –   and  your  teeth  grow  sturdy.     their  quiet  plea  for  your  return  wafts  close  to  your  ear,   like  the  sound  of  crashing  water  from  a  seashell  as  the  sea  rolls  against  your  feet.

Since Kafka is so dad-coded I have an idea, A Poppy Playtime and Kaiju No.8 crossover. Where Kafka senses the distress the toys are being put under due to Playtime Co using Kaiju Cores they bought off the black market for the Bigger Bodies Initiative, unfortunately this cause Kafka and the Defense Force to discover what's really going on under the factory
I was wondering when Poppy Playtime would rear its head. Lol I actually have a different idea involving a Poppy Playtime x Kaiju No 8 but it ain't fully fleshed out. So the post for that will be different from this.
The Kaiju Cores and skin were used for the creation of the toys except for Poppy. I compare them to a living Kaiju Fiber Suit but with limiters permanently blocking their power. There are two reasons behind this. One is to avoid detection by Kaiju scanners as making a Defense Force officer disappear is a lot harder to explain away.
The other reason being to provide a neutered regeneration. Playtime Co rather not make the toys fully capable of rebelling but be able to work for longer periods. Enhanced slaves who later snap thanks to the Prototype enacting Frenzy Mode.
A berserker state that can be triggered by stimulating the Kaiju Cores with a pheromone from a unique flower. Toys under this are focused on a simple goal, usually to kill, sent by their control and cannot resist unless Frenzy mode is disabled.
Kafka immediately feels the presence of the toys three weeks after his first transforms. A subtle feeling that began to grow until he couldn't ignore it. Reno immediately tags along as he's heavily concerned about his friend.
They enter the factory first with the Defense Force quickly following. Why? Halfway through the second level(Mommy Longlegs section), Kafka's core flares that intimidating 9.8 fortitude as Ai/Tiny inside come feel something drastically wrong the deeper they go.
Thus they sends out that pulse akin to a threat so nearby kaiju/honju/yoju know to stay away. (It was received btw.) Soshiro is sent in and begins finding research notes left behind in more noticeable places.(Blame Kafka)
He hasn't seen any alive toys yet until he enters Innovation. (Kafka is on a no kill route so he convinces Huggy Wuggy alongside the other toys he encountered so far that he can help them.) Soshiro discovers the still paralyzed form of Bobby Bearhug alongside her files. (Huggy been keeping her alive.)
Soshiro immediately takes Bobby Bearhug and heads back to headquarters as the situation seriously changed. Any toy found by him will be marked for live capture with officers coming in to help escort them out. Plus it gives Kafka and Reno time to finish the rest of the factory.
I can't resist an awkward confrontation where they finally the Prototype only for the Defense Force to show up with Mina in tow. Or the toys both have rescued forming a hostile wall while they tell the DF to back off. You can bet Kafka and Reno had some de-escalating to do.

hiii thanks for rbing my horror recs post! here's your recs! :)
nope is hard because there's truly nothing like it....but if i had to say maybe barbarian (2022) and malignant (2021) for their uniqueness and crazy twists, and nope does take a little bit of inspiration from signs (2002) so that could be interesting too.
based on the silence of the lambs i'd recommend you longlegs (2024), pulse (2001), se7en (1995), the empty man (2020), terrified (2017) and lake mungo (2008) because they're all about investigations that get weird and fucked up.
based on color out of space i'd recommend annihilation (2018), the beach house (2019), mandy (2018), event horizon (1997) and the endless (2017) about cosmic horrors happening to a group of people.
based on re-animator i'd recommend night of the creeps (1986), an american werewolf in london (1981), lost boys (1987) and brain damage (1988) because they’re all super fun 80s horrors with gay undertones.
based on candyman (2022) i'd recommend the people under the stairs (1991), his house (2020), get out (2017) and master (2022) about racial injustice, and the devil's candy (2015), black swan (2010) and the perfection (2018) about getting completely consumed by your art.
hope there's some you haven't seen yet! :)
!!!!!! Thank you thank you thank you! I’m super excited to watch the ones I haven’t seen (and rewatch the ones I have!)—thank you again for sharing your vast knowledge and expertise with this unlearnéd wanderer…

hiii thanks for rbing my horror recs post! sorry it took a while but here's your recs! :)
based on saw i'd recommend the collector (2009) & the collection (2012), my little eye (2002), cube (1997) and dread (2009) because they're all about being stuck in a trap/experiment with peak 2000s vibes/editing.
based on the rocky horror picture show i'd recommend the lure (2015) and repo! the genetic opera (2008) because they're queer/goth horror musicals. i'd also recommend alucarda (1977), frankenhooker (1990), hellbent (2004), bit (2019), i saw the tv glow (2024) and vampyros lesbos (1971) for visually beautiful (queer) horror.
based on re-animator i'd recommend night of the creeps (1986), an american werewolf in london (1981), lost boys (1987), butcher baker nightmare maker (1981) and brain damage (1988) because they’re all super fun 80s horrors with gay undertones.
based on the silence of the lambs i'd recommend you longlegs (2024), pulse (2001), se7en (1995), the empty man (2020), terrified (2017) and lake mungo (2008) because they're all about investigations that get weird and fucked up.
based on dracula (1931) i'd recommend carnival of souls (1962), nosferatu (1922), frankenstein (1931), let the right one in (2008), let's scare jessica to death (1971), the cabinet of dr caligari (1920), suspiria (1977) and sleepy hollow (1999) because they're all slow and beautifully atmospheric.
hope there's some you haven't seen yet! :)
Holy cow!!!! I didn’t expect to actually get this message given how many notes that post got! Very impressive!!!!! Thank you I will definitely be checking a bunch of these out yippeeeeee!!!!!

hiii thanks for rbing my horror recs post! here's your recs! :)
based on evil dead (2013) i'd recommend X (2022), house of wax (2005), you're next (2011), hatchet (2006), barbarian (2022), the cabin in the woods (2011) and haunt (2019) because they're all have great gore, isolated settings and female main characters.
based on evil dead 2 i'd recommend night of the demons (1988), braindead (1992), fright night (1985), the return of the living dead (1985), creepshow (1982), night of the creeps (1986), re-animator (1985) and frankenhooker (1990) which are my fav 80s/90s horror movies about living dead things.
based on possession i'd recommend antichrist (2009) (very explicit sexually and violently, beware!) and eraserhead (1977) because they're both about struggling with parenthood and marriage, black swan (2010), perfect blue (1997), censor (2021) and saint maud (2019) because they're about women losing their grip on reality, and lastly the first omen (2024) because it has an incredible scene that references possession.
based on hausu i'd recommend suspiria (1977), beetlejuice (1988), the love witch (2016), the cell (2000) and the rocky horror picture show (1975) because they have unique aesthetics that they really commit to, and tetsuo: the iron man (1989), brain damage (1988), possessor (2020), killer klowns from outer space (1988), the machine girl (2008) and videodrome (1983) because they're some of the more unhinged batshit insane movies i've seen.
based on the silence of the lambs i'd recommend you longlegs (2024), pulse (2001), se7en (1995), the empty man (2020), terrified (2017) and lake mungo (2008) because they're all about investigations that get weird and fucked up.
hope there's some you haven't seen yet! :)
I forgot there was a 2013 Evil Dead lol, I meant the original. Which tbh these recs still apply. Either way thank you. Many of the movies here I like, several are among my broader list of favorites, but there's others I haven't watched so its further incentive.

Favourite* 50 Movies Seen in 2024
As has often been the case, I feel like I've seen so many disparate films this past year, it's difficult to rank them in a way that makes sense. This is how we get a film like Pulse from 2001 nestled next to Turner & Hooch. And yet, I persevere! I saw a lot of films I loved in 2024, and I'd say the top half of this list are all bonafide bangers (with the rest being solid as well). I've been working to lend more weight to films that genuinely resonate with me, regardless of popular opinion or what I think "seems" like it "should" be the best, and if there are any questionable choices here, you can probably chalk it up to that, because as always...
*Favourite ≠ Best
To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)

hiii thanks for rbing my horror recs post! sorry it took a while but here's your recs! :)
i sadly haven't seen fire walk with me so i don't have recs for that! i really want to but if we have to wait for me to finish all of twin peaks first we'd be here all year. sorry!
based on the witch i'd recommend the first omen (2024), suspiria (1977), alucarda (1977), possession (1981), swallow (2019), saint maud (2019), midsommar (2019), and black swan (2010) which are all beautifully stylised movies about women....going through something.
based on the ring i'd recommend the others (2001), let the right one in (2008), lake mungo (2008), marrowbone (2017), the orphanage (2007), pulse (2001) and séance (2000) because they're all slow, dread filled tragedies.
based on x i'd recommend the texas chainsaw massacre (1974 & 2003), hatchet (2006), house of wax (2005), wolf creek (2005) and the loved ones (2009) because they're all nice and nasty and grimy.
based on the mothman prophecies i'd recommend longlegs (2024), the empty man (2020), the ring (2002), i see you (2019), terrified (2017) and sinister (2012) about investigations that get very dark.
based on the shining i'd recommend you the lodge (2019), the conjuring (2013), rosemary's baby (1968), his house (2020) and the dark and the wicked (2020) because they're all isolated family centered horror with haunting atmospheres.
based on ginger snaps i'd recommend let the right one in (2008), the lure (2015), the living dead girl (1982), stoker (2013), may (2002), bones and all (2022) and carrie (1976) about blood thirsty/outcast girls who want to be loved :(
hope there's some you haven't seen yet! :)
hi i kept forgetting to reply to this like an idiot but these are all such good recs…. adding many of these to my watchlist for sure! and totally understand no recs based on fwwm bc it truly is a movie u have to see the show to watch but i still had to include it regardless bc it’s my top movie of like all time ever

Day 23
Maker’s End
Tumblr media
Rode back to the Shattered Kiln camp to stock up, sell the trinkets I uncovered in the delve, and change back into some sturdier gear. Then I set out east toward Pitchcliff. Surely Erend would be there by now, and Marad’s agents had had plenty of time to gather intel on Dervhal. I was just hoping we weren't too late.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good thing I did change into that armour, because the machines on the trail east were deadly. I came upon another corrupted site with two Rockbreakers. I knew I’d be minced if I met them on the ground, so instead I tore off the canon of a nearby Ravager and shot the Rockbreakers from across the river—they don’t seem able to cross water, maybe can’t burrow so deep. Frost and hardpoint arrows after that, and though I tried to find cover I got battered around by the rocks they churned up and sent flying over the water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then a Behemoth came charging by, my first encounter with one. I took out the modules on its back that allowed it to lift stones and debris from the earth with arcs of force. It was just a Trampler without flame after that, took it out with more frost and arrows
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Onward to Pitchcliff. I spotted the bright marks of Banuk paintings on the northern cliff face, a climbing trail to go with them. I couldn't resist the call, so I made the climb and was rewarded with another of those wooden figures the envoy in Meridian is so keen on. And the view, of course.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Approaching the border to the Claim, the trees were felled, leaving the landscape clear and grey. Oseram machines penetrated the gloom with the grinding of wood and the scream of struck metal. Like the pulleys in Meridian’s elevators and their huge counterweights, their machines hooked into the forces of the wilds and transferred them into new actions—sawing and striking and smelting. It’s amazing. I wonder if all machines work in this way, when broken down to their simplest parts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once I arrived in Pitchcliff, I headed for the marketplace where Erend was already waiting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I picked up a trail moving away from the market recently, followed it to a secluded edge of the village and found Marad’s spy, already dead. He’d drawn a crude map on the stone with his own blood before he died, showing an area to the north east. I guess Dervahl got to him. There were no notes or information on him, nothing we could use except that ominous map.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Erend gathered the vanguard soldiers he’d brought with him while I went ahead to scout the area north east of Pitchcliff. I soon found a clear trail, its torches already burning in the evening light. The trail wound up into the mountains, where I soon spotted the red and black rags of bandits snapping in the wind, more makeshift bridges and shelters. Seems like Dervahl's made himself so unpopular around the Oseram that he’s had to fill his ranks with roaming killers. They had machines chained up; looked like they were trying to take them apart for scrap and study. The presence of Longlegs supported my theory about a sound-based weapon. I guess Dervahl managed to extract the mechanism intact and put it to his own purposes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Erend soon arrived with the vanguard, and I told them to hang back while I shattered the machines' chains, setting them loose to make some noise. The Longleg and Ravager wreaked havoc while I picked off a few marksmen from the watchtowers, then Erend’s men joined me in the fight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I used the Ravager’s cannon to take out most that the machines hadn’t torn apart, then climbed around to surprise those hiding behind cover.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We finished off the machines, then I tracked the pulse of Dervahl’s weapon to an underground passage. I was barred by a deafening blast of sound, then a man came out from the passage slinging a huge weapon—some sort of heavy-duty rattler. Not Dervahl himself though. Did he know we were coming for him?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Erend and I took out the gunner, pressing in close so he couldn’t launch his projectiles, then I removed the protection he wore on his ears and used them to get close enough to turn off the sound trap on the stairs. Then we descended.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ersa was down there, curled up on the stone of her cell as she was barraged with wave after wave of debilitating noise. Erend smashed the machine to scrap and held Ersa close. It was clear to me, probably to Erend too, that she’d only been clinging to life in hope of seeing him again. She warned Erend of Dervahl’s intentions to enact his failed plan to destroy Meridian. She told him to stand by his king—seems like Avad’s care for Ersa was reciprocated. How are we going to tell him?
Tumblr media
I didn’t know what to say to Erend, just went about making myself useful, searching the workshop. I found notes delivered from a trader in blaze; Dervahl had ordered a huge shipment to Meridian. Either he’s hiding it somewhere, somehow (unlikely, given there’s been strict inspections of all wares since Ersa’s death), or the shipment is yet to arrive and Avad’s men can intercept it.
Looking around at Derhval’s inventions, it was almost sad. There was a device in there, a wooden box, capable of capturing and echoing recorded voices, almost like a Focus can. Incredible. And his weapon derived from a Longleg’s scream…he’s a genius. Shame he couldn’t use it for good. This quest for revenge has bent him so far he’s fighting against his own people.
I can’t feel sorry for him though. Especially not with the state Ersa was in when she died. Not broken, she joked, but she was beaten blue, fresh blood tracks running over dried crust from her ears, nose, mouth. I wish I could have known her as the captain she was. Erend was…shattered, to come all this way, regain his hope, and lose her all over again. It’s better that we found her, of course, but I know this is a whole new world of pain for those who loved her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I stayed at the camp with the other vanguardsmen over night, leaving Erend in the workshop with Ersa. I slept some of the time, kept watch for the rest, making sure no one else would be returning to camp. Either Dervahl was here a while, or he took over an existing settlement. The buildings were strong, and seemed old. I’ll ride back south tomorrow. To Meridian or to the Grave Hoard? I know I’d never forgive myself if Dervahl’s attack came when I was gone.

based on the silence of the lambs i'd recommend longlegs (2024), pulse (2001), se7en (1995), the empty man (2020) and terrified (2017) because they're all about investigations that get weird and fucked up.

based on the haunting of hill house i'd recommend marrowbone (2017), oculus (2013), the conjuring (2013), hereditary (2018), lake mungo (2008), the orphanage (2007), the lodge (2019) and the sixth sense (1999) because they're my favourite deeply sad family horrors.

ooohhh thank you so much for sending me this! I literally have not seen any of these (again, girl who is scared of everything and also kinda new to horror), so these recommendations are great to find more stuff I could really like and to expand my horizon. especially want to look into ginger snaps (I have it on DVD so that'll be easy) and I think I can still check out Longlegs in cinema, it's only coming out right now in Germany. Pearl, Suspiria and The Craft also seem great. Again, thank you so much for sending me this <3
