Back on my bullshit begging people to watch / read My Student Spirit (and yes this is a real screenshot of real dialogue from the show).

It's about a guy who died and now haunts his old dorm room. When the new occupant has a near-death experience he gains the ability to see ghost(s?) so they team up to help one another. Any more will be spoilers so just go watch it for yourself. 😉

I stumbled upon it around a year ago cause I follow a lot of indie animators on YouTube and thought it looked kinda fruity (I tell you I got those fictional gaydar goggles on lock 😔). Actually come to think of it I think I found it through an animatic...wouldn't be the first time an animatic led me to a new hyperfixation so pls keep at it! Shamelessly I do ship the main 2 characters but I'm also fine with them remaining platonic. I just enjoy watching their odd-couple relationship unfold; they have such a great dynamic that has a lot of tension while pushing them both to grow. I do think that one of the MC's (Elijah / Oleg) is confirmed biromantic asexual which BIG if true I forgot where I read that though. It has been heavily implied that he had a relationship with another (male) character (who is super sketchy / mysterious in his own right), and apparently parts of the original Russian (which is a gendered language) also support his interest in men so. 👀

But shipping aside honestly this show SLAPS

The characters are all really interesting with a lot of implied depth to their personalities, pasts, and relationships and the mystery aspect unfolds more and more with increasingly intense plot and lore. It does start off a bit rough with the quality of the animations and English translation / lip synching, and from what I can tell the dub went on hiatus while the original Russian language version carried on. But seriously each episode shows amazing improvement to the point where I was kind of blown away by the quality of the S1 finale.

I was completely SHOOK when Episode 4 and 5 popped in my feed in short succession. We are so BACK baby and apparently S2 will be coming out in August. 😊🌸

The show also has a comic book series which supplements the animated episodes which I think is pretty cool. I lost my shit at Comic Con last year because my friends and I all separated to wander around to do some shopping and when we met back up I saw one of them had this series so I was just like WHERE DID YOU GET THAT so I got to buy them for myself. 😌💕 (You can also buy them online but I love to buy things in person!)

The comic series is canon but covers different material from the show. The stories are really nice and build on the lore / characters but you can still enjoy the show without them. I really like the third one which is especially sweet.

I used to watch a lot of international animation (because I love the art form so much, I would go out of my way to push myself to watch animation from around the world...I actually had a challenge going to watch a new film every day. I was studying international film and literature so it wasn't that strange 😂). It's such a fun way to see little snapshots into another culture. As an American we are force-fed anti-Russian propaganda from the moment we're born. And sure, obviously there's things I don't approve of going on over there (just as there's things I don't approve on going on here 🤪✌️). But at the end of the day I'm a humanist and people are just people, and artists are artists (who tend to be some of my favorite kinds of people 😏). And it makes me feel kind of warm, knowing that through art and the Internet we can connect with people all around the world.
