Work in progress update on the Ops Core FAST project:

With the Natural Gear Camo dip applied, i went ahead and dressed it up with CAG (Ranger Green) Velcro.

The MS2000 Strobe is entirely redundant given the integral strobes on the PVS31 Battery Pack (which still needs an adapter cable), but I put it in there for now cause it looked cool.

I was originally anticipating keeping this as an ARC rail setup, but I thought the finish and the velcro looked so nice that I couldn't bring myself to break it up. I have an Invisio X50 that I need to get more use out of anywho.

Anything I plan on adding at this stage aside from the missing power cable is a Princeton Tec MPLS. I like the look of their clip-on helmet mounts.

Seeing as the shell no longer needs to clear a pair of Comtacs, I also replaced the crown pads with an Oregon Aero so the shell sits lower on my head and more comfortably to boot.

Fool me twice, shame on me

Fool me thrice, I might be an ANVIS user

For those of you following along (and let's be real, you probably aren't), I recently bought another Adams Industries Surface ANVIS Mount (AI/SAM) to replace the previous older generation one.

This newer one is a lot cleaner with its machining, has more robust wiring, and went apeshit with lockout set screws for when you have it set the way you want it. These mounts are long discontinued, so I had to pay a little more than I wanted to get a used and beat-up one, but it works just the same.

Most important of all, the newer ones are included with a spacer shim that puts the mount at the proper angle when mounted to Ops-Core helmets (which have a shallower shroud angle than MICH/ACH helmets).

While the expected benefits stood true, some new and more complicated flaws immediately became palpable:

Starting with the more negligible, the newer gen AI/SAM re-introduced the low battery indicator LED that the legacy ITT ANVIS Mounts had. Previous generation AI/SAM lacked this.

This is a good feature to have when running with legacy Low Profile Battery Packs, but if you want to run a PVS31/BNVD-style battery back like I have on my Ops-Core, this is no bueno - power comes through all four pins with those, and it just so happens that with ANVIS mounts, two of the pins are for the low battery indicator, meaning if your mount has an indicator light, it will just stay on at all times with a BNVD Pack.

The other issue I had is with the angle shim on the mount itself - while it does indeed put it at the correct angle for running ANVIS Goggles on Ops-Core helmets, it also entirely negates the benefit of ANVIS being low-profile.

The added material sticks the goggles out further than normal and I find that even with the bridge adjusted all the way in, the eyepieces sit too far away from my eyes to be usable.

Of course the silver lining is that I can remove the shim itself and use the mount with a MICH/ACH helmet just fine.

In summary, the AI/SAM really is the best ANVIS mount if you're balling on a budget and running surplus ANVIS Goggles and a hand-me-down ACH as your ballistic night vision helmet setup.

Me? I've learned my lesson. This futile journey making a case for the ANVIS ball detent system just sadly doesn't translate to the modern age. I luckily have a way out in the fact the TNVC Artemis BINOD Goggles have an alternative BNVS/Dovetail Power Supply that you can just swap out with the ANVIS one:

I think I'll be picking up one of these adapters soon.

I still have a place in my heart for ANVIS, but this journey should serve as a major cautionary datapoint for those looking to forego the inevitability of BNVD/Dovetail Setups.

Because I was inverted. Do you know your holds if you’ve got your rifle at an angle? At the 90 or even 45 degree? As distance increases the offset becomes much more apparent. Simple rule of thumb is to place your optic on the magazine side.
