Oh that's awesome, I'm also fascinated by Finland (which ironically also stemmed from my love of the music LOL)

oooo, what would you recommend to do in Helsinki? And in other places, I'm hoping to go there some point soon and I want to make sure I do everything (I have a few other places I'd like to try and visit too, including lapland to see the lights 🥺 so recommendations for anywhere is welcome!)

I feel like people are so caught up in mainstream music they don't really realise how much awesome stuff comes from nordic (and other) countries, definitely a big influence for me

I totally agree, it looks so peaceful in literally every photo I see, I live just outside a busy city and I hate how busy it is, quiet is always nice

I'd love to see it at all time of year but I think a Christmas marked would be especially pretty, I think I could be convinced to buy a lot of stuff I didn't need (and I think the appeal of snow would make me happy even if I'm always cold LOL)

I have to say I'm not big on going out nightlife wise but I think I would try just to experience it, I know there's some cool metal bars and such with memorabilia that would be so cool to see (I also think a gig there would be a laugh, I love travelling for gigs so maybe one day)

Is fish big over there? I feel like I heard their national dish is fish based (I'm not a huge fan of fish at all but I would try, just because maybe ill find something I do like)

It's always so nice to have friends in different places, I wish I was better at making friends (although im so grateful for the ones who did stick around)

She made the moomins right? They're so cute, I'd like to go to the museum if I passed that way, have you or would you try learning the language? Its probably one of the things that fascinates me a lot, I've never been good at languages, but I love how it sounds!

some of the things i recommend doing in helsinki:

eat at the market!! there's a lot of local food to try and it's delicious! (but do not eat outside in summertime because a seagull will come to steal your reindeer sausage. been there done that)

allas sea pool is great for sauna (there are different saunas with different temperatures and views) and pools (one is heated)

i absolutely loved visiting the bar "the riff" and its a must see (if you're into that kind of music/scene!). also i saw a gig at tavastia and the him fangirl in me almost fainted at the sight of the huge heartagram on the ceiling. iconic

suomenlinna is gorgeous. so is esplanadi and most of the tourist-y stuff honestly

i loved taking the cruise around the archipelago, you can see all the little houses on the islands and they're so cute (a mökki summer sounds like a dream to me. especially on midsummer omg that must be a dream)

while in tampere:

again eat at the market those are the best

i visited the moomin (yes, they're by tove jansson!) museum and came home with a moomin obsession so be careful with it (i loved it)

the pyynikki tower is absolutely gorgeous because not only can you see a lovely view from the top, but they also serve munkki, which is a pastry i found absolutely delicious and still dream of from time to time (and im not big on sweet baked goods usually). also it's in the woods and it looked so beautiful when i went there. like look how peaceful:

as for fish, i saw a lot of salmon (and there's like. such a difference from the salmon we have here. like it tastes different and the texture is different idk how. same for the fish i had in sweden) and freshwater fish (which we don't really have around here? so it was new to me and very delicious), but they're also big on meat so if you don't like fish you could always find an alternative if you want to eat local. they're also famous for their berries! and their bilberry pie, which i didn't try because, again, not my thing. i found karelian pastries really good. salmiakki (salty liquorice) is something to try, i love it but my friend didn't lol, and lonkero (a long drink) is also something you should try, but i stopped drinking after my second time in finland and didn't have it again </3

i love languages but finnish is way too scary for me 😭 i really like it but 15 grammatical cases? in school i struggled with latin that only had 6 of them 😭😭😭 but then again i kind of regret not starting to learn finnish when my interest started like 6 years ago, because now i would have something to show for it, whereas now all i know is yksi kaksi kolme sauna (and perkele. and vittu)

Hello everyone!

I hope you've had a nice week. We've had an abbreviated week, in that the kids didn't have school on Thursday and Friday. They also do not have school on Monday. The Easter break here is longer than it is in the US--at least at my university and at our kids' school! Also, this last week Rowan and Eric were gone for Monday to Wednesday for the 6th grade class trip at Marttinen. I know I mentioned this before. When Cece and I got back from Estonia on Monday, she did race right to school, but after that, it was basically a pretty easy week. I did not teach this week because my students had Wednesday off for the Easter holiday. So not only did Cece and I have a lot of time together in Estonia, just Mommy and daughter, we had a lot of time together back in Tampere, because Eric and Rowan were still on the 6th grade trip.

Like I often do, I went out with her to Ikuri on Tuesday for her gymnastics training. It's a long training session, at 2 and 1/2 hours, and I was finally able to finish the last few paragraphs of the fifth chapter of the book that I'm writing with Joe. This means that I have one more major chapter to write. I'm hoping to finish it by the end of May. Then Joe and I can spend the rest of the summer on his first three chapters, which --with chapters 4, 5, and 6 that I will have written, are the theoretical and historical and broadly conceived of the book. These chapters are what you would call "example-rich" chapters. I need to read and revise/edit what Joe has written, as he does with what I have written, and I need to work on more illustrations for the last section of the book, which is more of the how-to guide concerning usability testing and user research. I'm really hoping we can meet our goal of submitting the whole manuscript at the end of July. As I think I've mentioned, I am a co-organizer of an international law conference in Mexico City, and that is the second week of August. I know I will be working on last-minute arrangements for that, as well as writing my conference paper, in late July, and I want to have this book manuscript in the bag by that point.

Let's see, what else have we done this week that has been interesting and fun . . .

Well, yesterday, the weather was no very cold, but it was grey and drizzly. But, Eric and I took Alex to the groomer and noon and then we went on about a four-mile walk through Pyynikki by the lakeside (what is labeled Tammerkoski on the map). When we looped back to go to the mall, we passed by the edge of the koski (rapids), which there has a very nice bridge over it, and there was a sign on the bridge that said the "baptismal font" for May 1st was moving there this year. We had to look up what this is all about. So, we have known that Vappu, May Day, is a big, big deal here. So, university students wear their boiler-suits which have patches all over them (I have described this is past posts) and Vappu is the biggest celebration of the year for the boiler-suit wearer. They also don their high school graduation caps and drink fermented lemonade, pcnic out, and eat cardamom donuts. But, they also apparently get dunked in the koski, and historically, this has happened closer to the city center, but I guess the embankment is unstable right now, so they've moved the dunking area, the "baptismal font," to this area by the bridge over the koski. This is also an area that has several floating sauna boats, some with hot tubs on the top deck, so we know it is really, really going to be a happening spot on Vappu. This article is pretty comprehensive in describing who these technical students who gets dunked in the water are and what all of these wacky Vappu activities are--as well as what all of their activities through the year are. I think you'll get a kick reading all about it.

Eric and I had a nice walk yesterday and learning where the mayhem was going to be happening on May 1st was an extra perk. And, FYI, Alex looked super spiffy when Eric picked him up at the groomer. I stayed at the mall because I needed to do some pre-Easter shopping there.

OK, so Eric and Rowan had a very nice time on the 6th-grade trip! Eric always went, when he was picked to do so, on the kids' school trips to the school's ranch in New Mexico, Fenton Ranch, over their elementary-school years. So, this was a continuation of that tradition. At Marttinen, the kids did a high ropes course, rowed on a lake, played floorball, did sumo wresting, went to sauna, dipped in the freezing lake (if they wanted), and many other fun things! Eric remarked that at this school camp, there was no "academic element," like there always was at Fenton, and Eric thought there were many opportunities that weren't quite taken, to connect their activities to history or environmental studies. Eric really liked getting to know some of the kids and having his describe what they did and their personalities was absolutely hilarious. I guess 25 twelve-year-olds are pretty funny to spend three days with.

It took me a few days to finish this off, and now it is Easter Sunday, and I have 7 adults and 4 kids to be ready to entertain, in three hours! The kids enjoyed their Easter baskets that were waiting for them this morning, and lots of chocolate eggs and gummy candies have been consumed, you'll be glad to know.

More soon! I head to Strasbourg on Wednesday, after my last day of teaching in Finland for the year (but I am hoping to find way to come back and teach from time to time -- stay tuned!). I hope I'll be able to post again before I leave for France. Happy Easter, if you celebrate!

The secret recipe for the popular doughnuts (or 'munkki' in Finnish) made at the Pyynikki cafeteria was created in the 1980's.

The cafeteria as well as the observation tower sit on top of the world's largest esker over 150 meters (500 feet) above sea level.

Hugo Salmela (13 June 1884 – 28 March 1918) was one of the Red Guard military leaders of the 1918 Finnish Civil War in Tampere. He was also an enthusiastic amateur actor. [...] “Salmela was accidentally killed in an explosion in March 1918. Kustaa Salminen, the former commander of the Western Front, unintentionally triggered a hand grenade in the Red Guard headquarters and threw it into a basket full of grenades. The explosion killed several members of the Red Guard staff and Salminen himself was injured. Hugo Salmela was first buried at the Red Guard military cemetery in Pyynikinharju, but after the war, the Whites moved his body into a mass grave at the Kalevankangas Cemetery.” (Wikipedia)

Hugo Salmela’s ghost is claimed to haunt the premises of the former Tampere Polytechnic Institute in Pyynikki, later known as the respective homes of Tampere Language Institute and Tampere Vocational College. Footsteps and unexplainable voices have been heard, the doors opening by themselves, the elevator moving on its own, and so on.
