The Beatles: The Authorised Biography

The seventh instalment of The Beatles mythology — and the first comprehensive bio about the group — is The Beatles: The Authorised Biography, woven together by Hunter Davies from numerous interviews and hang-outs with the lads and their trusted associates throughout 1967 and 1968. The book was commissioned by Brian Epstein before his death, and was published on 30 September 1968 while The Beatles were waist-deep in recording the White Album (and otherwise managing internal tensions no doubt exacerbated by external pressures of running Apple Corps. in the absence of Mr. Epstein).

After largely reiterating the Epstein-Taylor gloss of The Beatles' origin story and rise to fame (with new details provided by the lads), Davies' narrative picks up in mid-1964 and fills in the gap thru mid-1968, touching on everything that's happened since filming A Hard Day's Night (Bob Dylan, Help!, LSD, Shea Stadium, Rubber Soul, Revolver, “more popular than Jesus”, Japan,Philippines, Candlestick Park, “Strawberry Fields Forever”, Sgt. Pepper, Our World, meeting the Maharishi, the death of Brian Epstein, Magical Mystery Tour) until their India retreat, ending with the first stirrings of the White Album.

By the time Davies closes his narrative, the band is theoretically still a work-in-progress (as it was during Epstein's autobiography), with many assurances that it's likely to continue for some time, even as the individuals have already branched out into other areas of interest. Indeed, with so many more achievements behind them, it's hard to envision what else could possibly lay ahead for The Beatles, and The Beatles may have thought so too. The conclusion of Davies' tale in therefore bittersweet and inconclusive — sweet because it ends in mid-1968 when the band is still together and making a new album, in which they excel; bitter because in hindsight we all know that Get Back is right around the corner, followed by Abbey Road, and the effective dissolution of the group immediately after that.
