man…many things to be a hater about but I keep coming back to the writing. the writing itself was so poor. I have always had conflicted feelings about the advice of “show, don’t tell” because I think it’s really nuanced, but after reading sotr I get it because that book was almost entirely telling. the rebel plot was told. the personalities of almost all the characters were told rather than shown. so much worldbuilding was told. the dialogue was very poorly written, I think that when writing the trilogy SC was reading her dialogue out loud, because it flows nicely and each voice is so distinct. that did not happen here. it was unrealistic and corny and became too…telling. again. when dialogue is one of the contexts where you can usually get away with telling rather than showing.

I keep coming back to the writing because it is the vehicle of the story. there are parts in sotr that intrigued me or that I was excited to read or that seemed like great ideas, but the writing was so bad that it completely hobbled the conveyance of those concepts. basic things! basic things like varying sentence and paragraph length and structure, show don’t tell, not repeating the same words or phrases over and over, not paraphrasing concepts but instead rearticulating them in the appropriate context and voice, these are truly basic things when it comes to writing that she did not do and it is mindblowing to me. YA can be beautifully written technically, it can even be elegant. tbosas is deeply elegant! sotr being YA is no excuse for poor writing and it cuts her story off at the knees.
