Saturday night at the movies, queueing up for Quo Vadis, 1952 .... Read more below
This was a common scene for a Saturday, from the days when most people lived within walking distance of a cinema. 1952 was long before the days of 24-hour TV, and being able to watch new movies at home, (just a few weeks after they're released) you checked the local newspaper, and then joined the queue. I think in my youth I must have spent at least a couple of hours every week in a cinema queue, and frequently changed my mind about what film I was going to see as we shuffled towards the ticket booth. I was asked to colourise this photograph of the Rivoli cinema in Worthing for a client who had spent many hours during the 1950's in that very picture house. This occassion was the film that was nominated for eight Academy Awards (though it won none), and it was such a huge box-office success that it was credited with single-handedly rescuing MGM from the brink of bankruptcy. Quo Vadis starred Robert Taylor, Deborah Kerr, Leo Genn, and Peter Ustinov. Sergio Leone was an uncredited assistant director of Italian extras. Future Italian star Sophia Loren appeared as an uncredited extra. Produced for $7 million, it was the most expensive film ever made at the time. It became MGM's largest grosser since Gone with the Wind (1939). Since cinema was one of the biggest attractions at the weekend, it wasn't unusual for high street picture palaces to use some device for making sure every seat was filled. For this performance the Rivoli seems to have catered for both sexes, but just to make sure that husbands, and boyfriends would give the latest war film a miss, they've gone with two Vestal Virgins, and just the one Centurion for the ladies!! These days I have large collection of Blu-Rays, and instant access to just about any film, but it's just not the same as that stroll to my local Odeon, or Gaumont, and standing in the queue with mounting excitement about the latest "must see" blockbuster. Those were the days when every film was bigger, more exciting, funnier, sadder, and if you were lucky, more torrid than anything you'd ever seen before. One of the taglines for Quo Vadis was ....
THIS IS THE BIG ONE! The splendor and savagery of the world's wickedest empire! Three hours of spectacle you'll remember for a lifetime!
The other thing you may notice about the queue is that everybody is suitably dressed for the performance, after all it was a proper night night out. Anyway I have Quo Vadis on blu-ray, so I shall give it a watch tonight with some home made hot dogs (that just won't taste the same), and some shop bought popcorn (that just won't taste the same), and halway through the movie I shall get a "drink on a stick" from the freezer. sadly I won't get dressed up for the occassion, but I might turn the lights out for a bit of atmosphere, and try to spot Sophia Loren among the extras.

Con’t from this with @mangledmenagerie
mangledmenagerie:
It was one of those moments when a bad memory had surfaced one that set Michelle to brooding, a cloud of gloom descending swiftly. She had sought out Ariadne only to just sit quietly before finally asking for happy thoughts.
“Those sound very nice.” Michelle sighed, “I like a good storm.”
“Mh-mh, me too, but only if I’m not under it....But watching the elements run riot is delightful when you’re safe inside...” Ariadne smiled. Her friend didn’t look pretty happy, but she knew better than to ask - she wasn’t a counsellor, but she knew that, eventually, if someone wanted to talk, they will. You didn’t need to ask them. And her new work, at the head of the funeral home, had confirmed such idea. “Do you want some tea, Michelle ?”

⸻ ARIADNE GREYHALL
HE WATCHED AS DOTS KEPT APPEARING AND DISAPPEARING. The obvious telltale of messages being written and erased over and over again. That was part of him that almost found it endearing, did he managed to get the Ghost stuck between decisions to make ? A decision that perhaps should have been far too easy to made, but well, he could admit that due to the strange involvement that seemed to bind the two of them, even he himself wouldn’t know what to choose if the roles were reversed. A quiet chuckle spilling past his lips at the familiar tone of texts received. And yet, brows furrowed, if only for a moment.
→ [ 📱 — Ghost ] Can’t have you thinking I’m inconsiderate, can I ?
But it was the second part of the texts that had his attention, that had his gaze shift from his phone to the laptop opened in front of him and the various equipment connected to it. Lying wasn’t going to help, he knew all too well they were going to call his out but the thing that should have concerned him, was the fact that till they mentioned it the idea of tracking them down through their voice didn’t cross his mind, at least not that night. A huff, a shake of his head, hand reaching to shut his laptop.
→ [ 📱 — Ghost ] That is the funny part, isn’t it ? You don’t have any guarantee that I won’t do it → [ 📱 — Ghost ] except for my word.
There was curiosity behind hazel hues, a need to know more, and if he had to indulge them for once, so be it.
The first thing Ghost noticed, once back with their food, was the messages. They grabbed their phone, before sitting in front of their coffee table and plugging the phone in - a precaution. A safety measure, to hide their voice but also to, if needed, change its localisation. Ghost wasn’t the most elusive hacker in the world by being careless. But here ? It was different. It wasn’t that Ghost wanted to be caught, especially not by the SHIELD. But they allowed Ben to catch a glimpse of them. To push their luck further and further, see how well they could guess his moves to contradict said moves. He was a challenge. A dangerous challenge. But a challenge nonetheless. An exciting challenge. Ghost put the Tom Yum soup in the fridge, for tomorrow - or later, more realistically - then grabbed a bottle of soda and sat back in front of the coffee table, ready to start eating… And, of course, continue to bother their favorite agent. [ 📱 — My Agent ] But how much is your word worth, my dear agent ? On an impulse, they disconnected their phone from the computer. It was a risk. A huge breach of their usually tight safety protocols and all that for what ? For a good looking agent with a charming demeanor ? Ghost, Ghost, Ghost, what are you doing ? By playing with fire like that, you’re gonna end up burned… Worth it, though. So fucking worth it and it wasn’t like they couldn’t disappear once more. Or lie their way out. Chopsticks dug through their Som Tam while Ghost’s free hand played with the apps on screen. Hesitating. Making the screen flicker while they ate, almost starting a game as tension rumbled their inside in a very pleasant way. Fingers finally settled on a course of action as the green papaya salad was being demolished, pushing the green button and actively calling the agent. Risky, but oh so exciting.

Do Dis: List all the things you’re currently working on in as much or little detail as you’d like, then tag some friends to see what they’re working on. This can be writing, art, vids, gifsets, whatever.
I was tagged by @truth-renowned. If you want to play, consider yourself tagged.
On the front burner: Quo Vadis
On the back burner, but not forgotten: Lonely Town
In the staring-at-the-ingredients-deciding-what-I-want-to-make stage: a short fic to be named.
In the queue: another short fic that I’ve received several asks for
I also am thinking about some “bonus scenes” for Quo Vadis once it’s done.

Quo Vadis ITO
ITO president’s report for January, February and early March 2019.
I met with the Better Transit Alliance (BTA) group at the six-mile for a meet and greet of several potential members. It was a good meeting with most folks arriving by bus despite the snow and ice. We chatted about various aspects of transit issues within the region. We didn’t talk much about specific objectives apart from the agreement on finishing the bus lanes to the six-mile area and discussing public transport systems in general. We also spoke about queue jumper lanes on the Pat Bay highway which we also agreed needed to be built.
Regarding parking policy, I will begin making presentations to targeted municipalities in the CRD in the near future, we are looking forward to having the rest of ITO assist us with this. Supporters can assist us by identifying developers that wish to build projects that have less than the required amount of parking. So small scale developers, housing advocates as well as walking and cycling advocates would all be great potential allies. We would be happy to come to your municipality and testify on behalf of your project or cause.
While visiting the Courtney area in late February, I had the opportunity to meet Pieter Vorster of the group Imagine Comox Valley, we had a very short meeting and discussed what our two groups stood for, there was wide agreement and an informal commitment to work together if situations should see fit to do so. My thinking here is to foster connections with other groups up and down the island to work together to get in front of councils to encourage them to advocate harder for the E&N refurbishment and other goals. Again, supporters can help us out by asking us to go over speaking notes for council presentations and if possible we would be willing to attend and back up our supporters.
I thank Lloyd Skaalen for attending the VTC meeting to discuss strategy for the upcoming federal election. There was agreement that VTC should meet again to discuss how best to illustrate the differences between the candidates in the upcoming federal election.
The Sidney Community Association (SCA) of which I am a board member, has decided that since Sidney’s Official Community Plan (OCP) has expired and by provincial law must be revised every 7 or so years we will aspire to educate, encourage and engage members as well as the general public. I was appointed to the transportation subcommittee and met with was with Lucinia Barylk, She has been doing some work with the city of Victoria as a planner and let me know about several great regional initiatives including the Municipality of Saanich’s active transportation plan that was recently released. We also spoke about how to use parking in lieu fees to better support active transportation in the Sidney area as well as about the role of active transportation in making Sidney a safer place for our elders on scooters and school-age children as they traverse the town.
However, the meeting with the GVCC and our first meeting for people of the peninsula who use cycling as a means of getting around was really interesting. Sidney Councillor Sara Duncan was in attendance as well as Steve Duck and several other folks that live on the peninsula that use bicycles to get around. We spoke about several ways that we could conduct outreach and possibly work with the other 2 peninsula municipalities to create a comprehensive peninsula-wide cycling network. These methods were :
a. Pop up presentations at bus stops,
b. Bike rodeos
Walks along busy routes and others talking about problem roads and problem bus stops.
I was also in attendance at the CRD meeting where a strong effort by the CRD parks board to finally quash MOTIs proposal for an alternative emergency route through the Sooke hills park and watershed. Something that I support.
Let's keep transforming towards sustainability.

“I came in through the front door like a normal person would,” Victor shrugged, “I knocked,” Not very hard if he was honest, “It was unlocked, you should really keep it locked in Gotham.” He had politely waited a whole five minutes at the door once he had entered, then curiosity motivated him to wander about…
“It smelled good and I’m hungry.”
“....I did lock the door. But maybe Magnus went out and forgot about it, that’s another possibility.” She shrugged. She knew the older man liked going for a walk sometimes to clear his mind - something they had in common - but never really thought about him locking or not the door. Even if the hitman had a good point, considering this was Gotham.

Ariadne stared at him for a few seconds when he mentioned that he was hungry. That..Was weird. But then again, far better than what she had expected from having a hitman in the house. “...I see, thank you....Take a seat, then. I was going to serve myself a bowl...Parmiggiano is in the fridge, next to the larvae’s boxes...” As much as the situation was weird and even a tad creepy, it was probably better than getting killed. Or eating in front of her thesis. And thus, with a smile, she reached for a second bowl and another spoon and placed them in front of Zsasz.
