Let’s Write a Whump Fic!

Hello and THANK YOU to everyone who sees this!  Because of YOU this little bitty blog just reached 900 followers!!!

So, here’s what I want to do to celebrate.  It’s called Quirkykayleetam Crowdsources a Fic!  (Blacklist the tag if you don’t want to see)

The idea is that we write a whump fic TOGETHER.  It’ll be like an request except for it won’t just come from one person.  All the ideas will be shared and created by all of you!

That’s right:  You pick the tropes, the genre, the characters and I will write something beautiful that reflects what we all love: WHUMP!

Let’s start with GENRE!

Should we go Realistic Fiction?  SciFi?  Fantasy?  Steampunk?  Old School Victorian?  Military?  Spy Fic?  Think of the coolest thing you can and reply to this post!  If you see somebody else’s idea and think it ROCKS, boost the hell out of it!  When we get enough responses, we’ll see if there’s a clear winner or if we need to take a vote and then we’ll move on to decide who our whumper and whumpee should be...

Let’s Write a Whump Fic!

Welcome back!  For those that are just joining us, I’m Rebecca and this is my 900 FOLLOWER CELEBRATION!!! I’m so grateful and excited for all of you!!!

Together, we are working together to Crowdsource a Whump Fic.  The votes are in for genre and *drum roll please* Fantasy was our overwhelming choice!

That means its time to create our characters and, once again, I’m counting on your ideas to make this happen!  Here’s how it works:

Respond to this post with an idea.  You can smash that reply button, send me an ask, message me; whatever works for you.  We just need as many responses as possible so please please please send in more than one!

We need generic character tropes!  Do you like a sadistic whumper?  A nonhuman whumpee?  A gruff caretaker?  Send it in!  Obviously, some of these are going to conflict and we can’t make them all work, but we’ll see what we can do.

We need character descriptions!  Try to keep these to a few words and leave it open to what role the character will be fulfilling, but we’re going to need these character archetypes to combine with our tropes to make fleshed out characters.  Need some ideas?  Think “Badass Lady Sky Pirate” or “Mutant Afraid of Their Powers” or “Secretly Evil Court Sorcerer.”

Boost what you love!  Don’t feel creative?  That’s totally fine!  We also need people to tell me what ideas they think are TOTALLY AWESOME and DEFINITELY want to see in the story.  Like I said, we can’t do everything, but we can try to make certain things stick.

Be kind!  This is a unique opportunity for collaborative storytelling.  That means not everything is going to end up the way you want it to and that’s okay.  Remember to stick to character things now (we’ll get to tropes next) and cheer on your other players.  Who knows?  You might even make a friend or two!

Character Creation

Our story is starting to take shape!  Here’s what we’re working with so far:

Whumpers:  An evil monarch with healing powers assisted by his pet henchman, a vain knife-wielding assassin who does his torturing dirty work.

Whumpee:  A lawful good knight who discovers the monarch’s evil plans due to his OCD and strong moral code.  He frees rebels the monarch has coerced into surrender through a disease only the monarch can heal only to sacrifice his freedom to let the others escape.

Caretaker:  A gruff sniper working for the resistance who can’t bare to leave the knight alone to their fate.  They have mind control powers, but are terrible at using them due to their terrible people-skills.  They’re used to sitting back and killing people for the cause, not helping them one-on-one.   

If this sounds like what we want to go with, hit me up with a message or a reply that says something along the lines of “Aye Aye Captain!” and we’ll move along to the next step!  If you wanna argue for some changes, that’s fine too!

You asked for characters so :) - A spy who's an animal shapeshifter (and i'm saying ALL animal) who's also a giant cat in human form and loves cuddles - A sniper who has mind control power but too socially awkward to actually talk to people - A beautiful thief who is very vain and can steal powers. Love, R :)

Now we’re in business, folks! 

Personally, I’m liking our animal shapeshifter for our stoic spy caretaker.  That would also give us the opportunity to do some Painful Magic with shifting since your whole musculature and bone structure has to be rearranged.  Plus, being able to turn into a mouse or mosquito at will would make spying pretty darn convenient!

Maybe the beautiful thief is the whumper and their frustration is that the whumpee is the one person’s power they cannot seem to steal.  They cannot figure out why, so they’re trying to get it by coercion (read: torture) instead?

Do we like the sniper better for any of these roles?  I’m pretty attached to the idea of our plant-powered paper pusher (maybe whose powers are controlled by their emotions only they’ve never felt extreme emotion so they never knew what they could do?), but this is not MY story.  It’s OURS.

Oooh I raise you! Because we are doing Rebellion!! The whumper is a monarch or a monarch's trusted adviser who has the power of healing! But they are evil oh no!!! -Love, R

@stoic-whumpee You make a good point! And plenty of plausible reasons for a knight to get whumped, if they end up being our whumpee! If they serve the kingdom they might discover that the monarch/advisor is evil and want to ruin their plans!

Also, @redwingedwhump just showed off how to do Evil Healing in her Captured series PERFECTLY! I would never presume to be That Good, but there’s lots of potential there!

Realistic fiction!

Yay!  Hello, friend!!!  Thanks for mixing it up!!!  So far Fantasy still has a hard lead, but we’ll see how many more votes we can get.  And never despair; we can work most tropes into most genres.  It’s just good to know where we’re starting from.

Torture (obviously, you know me) Whipping (yes) Hurt the caregiver

Look, I know I’m not suppose to decide where this fic is gonna go, but Torture is gonna happen.  You can’t get caught releasing rebels and NOT get tortured.  COME ON!!!

I love whipping.  Whipping is the way to my whumpy little heart and what led me to discover this community in the first place.  In my head our torturer enjoys knives more, but I shall put it on the list.  Perhaps it shall me something the Emperor asks for specifically...

Hmmmm... I had not thought of hurting the Sniper yet, but they DO have to escape somehow and that’s going to be treacherous.  Much potential for bodily harm...

Oh oh oh, tight collars, choking, screaming until their voice is gone. Those are tropes that give me the whumpflies everytime!

I have never written either collar OR choking whump!  I’ve noticed that collars have been a really big thing recently, especially with the rise in pet whump and Box Boys.  There’s a lot of possibilities there, especially combined with magic.

I actually have a really really EVIL idea that would go with choking, if you want to vote for that!

And screaming until their voice is gone is ALWAYS fun!  I was just having a conversation about the best whump sounds.  Is it wimpers through gritted teeth?  Keens when they can’t hold back any more?  Or downright full-throated screams when the crescendos to its ultimate pitch?

Alright, I got three descriptions, for each role! I won't assign who is who, but yeah. Just options! 1. A knight-adventurer with severe OCD (which is part of the reason they're so good at what they do). 2. a little sister (perhaps of the knight???) who's underestimated because she is a smol bean but it turns out she's a human rabbit of caerbonnag (the killer rabbit from monty python). like piss her off/hurt her fam/whathaveyou, and she gONNA MESS. YOU. UP. 3. The world's Pettiest Inventor (TM)

These suggestions would send the story in a VERY different direction!  I feel like this is set up for our whumper to be #3 with the knight-adventurer and their little sister to be caretaker and whumpee or co-whumpees, but by all means devise a different scenario!

Do we like these better?  Do we want to mix and match???  I feel like the “Killer Rabbit” could work in either situation and be the funniest/bloodiest thing you’ve ever seen.

Could I get uhhh a gruff caretaker that seems detached, but really cares for the whumpee deep down and just doesn’t want to seem vulnerable?

Hi there!  Ooooh, I love me some gruff caretakers, especially if they get to manhandle the whumpee around a bit to get them cared for but then end up going really easy on the whumpee even when they pretend not to!  A+ trope.  Thanks for suggesting it!!!

Might pair well with @straight-to-the-pain‘s stoic spy?

suggestion! (One of my faves) water torture! Pretty basic, but it’s fun.

Ooooh, thank you for this!  I did not think of Water Torture in connection to this fic, but it has been my single favorite torture trope to write and research since I joined the whump community.

I will certainly put it on the list!

Okay so I don’t know exactly how it would fit into our story, but I’m an absolute sucker for branding (or carved mark since you thought our whumper may like knives?) wherever and whenever I can get it.

Hey, hey, hey, my friend!  I just had someone else asking about tropes for permanent injury and I’m pretty dang sure this would qualify!

I will put down Branding/Permanent Marks on our Trope Poll and we’ll see what happens.  I think this would be a very fun torture route to take!

Yo hello it's me again. For the Crowdsourcing Fic, may I suggest Self Cacrificing Whumpee/Caretaker who puts everyone else' wellbeing before their own? The one who hides their pain and injuries because they were too busy taking care of others :) -R

Hello, hello @stoic-whumpee!  It’s great to hear from you today!  You know Self-Sacrificing characters are my JAM and if I can get a whumpee or a caretaker with this trope it would make me very very happy.  Thank you bunches!!!  Let’s hope other folks like this trope too!
