Durational Performance

“A durational performance is one where an audience and the performers go on a journey together over a sustained period of time” -D. Hutton

Durational performance is a form through which time is manifested in its original (natural) purity and brought to the forefront as pivotal to the experience. The performance is composed so that time, as the essential theme of the piece, physically affects and mentally transforms the performer, the audience, and the space.

Forced Entertainment, as I previously said, they make work in theatre and performance, and some of the projects they make are durational performances.

Contemporary Performance Makers

During my Post-Dramatic Performance Module I have been learning about the art of Contemporary theatre. To better my knowledge, I have researched some of the theatre companies/performers who create contemporary pieces. Below is a list of Contemporary Performance Makers I have been able to look up, or watch performances/promotional videos online to assist me on the education of what Contemporary theatre can be:

From the list of performers [above] I have really enjoyed watching performances by Frantic Assembly, DV8, Zoo Indigo and Bobby Baker. I think they are interesting and usually quite thought provoking, as well as sometimes being quite comical. I particularly liked watching videos of Bobby Baker's Cook Dems on YouTube, because of its comedy factor and lightheartedness.

I have seen a few videos online of the kind of performances The Wooster Group create, and I don't feel their performances are to my personal taste, as they feel almost like a sensory overload, plus a little confusing for me to watch. Maybe if I was able to watch one of their shows live, I might have a different opinion after being able to actually experience it in real life rather than watching it from my laptop screen.

I also find Ron Athey quite hard to watch as he performs extreme body art, involving a lot of blood, which tends to make me feel uncomfortable. Although, I think his intentions are to make the audience uncomfortable, I personally would rather watch a performance that doesn't involve harming the human body as I am quite squeamish. That being said, I find his style of performance very intriguing. It is interesting to see how some of these contemporary theatre artists really push the boundaries of what 'performance' really is... and could be.

It's a beautiful day, don't let it get away

Quizoola je počela, a paralelno sa njom i dinamična drama simultanog prevođenja u bekstejdžu. Trojica fenomenalnih prevodilaca smenjuju se u intervalima, a jedan od njih u svojim pauzama doprinosi događaju pesmama U2-a koje pušta na svojim slušalicama. Što se tiče same predstave, od samog početka počela je sa smenom pitanja banalnih, leksikonskih, koje se preokrenu u ona o višim principima. Od omiljenih ukusa hrane i pića, preko omiljenog ukusa telesnih tečnosti, ukusa osvete, do toga šta jedu anđeli (svetlost) i njihov Stvaralac. Odgovor je ciničan: jede svoje Anđele.  Pitanja (i odgovori) idu do potpuno apsurdnih, pa saznajemo da ljudi ne bi mogli da imaju seks bez genitalija, ali ovo kasnije dovede do smislenijih pitanja - šta seks znači za ljude uopšte. Pa se ponovo vrati na to kakav je seks možda bio za dinosauruse. Praćenje ovog smisaonog slaloma ide iz krajnosti u krajnost, pa tako i u reakcijama koje izaziva, od provala nekontrolisanog smeha do iznenadne ozbiljnosti. So I woke up this morning and, thanks to twitter, I realised that today was the 24 hour Quizoola show at SPILL, from Forced Entertainments, and one of the first things that came into my head was "now there's a show that was R&D'd in Guantanamo." Seriously. TWENTY FOUR HOURS. I can't concentrate on one thing for 24 minutes.

So I got out of bed and did a day of stuff. Payed a cheque in and went to a show, dyed my hair, watched Jonathon Ross. And still people on twitter were talking about Quizoola. I had a glass of wine by this point. SPILL were streaming the live feed on their website. A few people tweeted the following: "What is an ideal world?" "It's like the Ideal Home Show but bigger." Forced Ents are the only company whose show I genuinely feared I would fall asleep in the middle of, but I couldn't NOT look at this feed. For one thing, live webcasts almost never work. They're an internet car crash. But the last 90 minutes of Quizoola have been one of the most compelling things I've ever seen. It was funny, frivolous, personal, engaging, unexpected, human. "What is a hole?" "Have you ever dug a hole?" "Did Lenin and John Lennon ever meet?" "How much money is in your bank account?" "Which living person do you love the most?" "I was an ill child. I had some heart troubles. I was in hospital but I could walk and everything. So they sent me for an x-ray and they said 'can you walk there on your own?' and I said 'yeah' but I got in the lift and I must've gone to the wrong place because i got in the lift but I ended up in a sort of basement. I walked out of the lift but had this, this shaky thing. There was a woman who asked me if I was okay, and I said 'no I'm not really' so she was a bit panicky I suppose and she got me a wheelchair and took me to have my x-ray. They told me to sit on the floor. When you're having a panic attack you should sit on the floor and hold onto something. That helps." That's all I'm cpaable of blogging right now. I accidentally got drunk and have been overwhelmed by the power of the simplest idea. Time matters. Things get bigger. They grow. I wish it was still happening. I wish it was one of life's constants. I wish that when life was getting on top of you and you were panicking, you could sit on the floor, hold onto something and switch your phone to Quizoola mode to listen to some questions about life.

Kritika uživo

Danas u okviru Bitefa od 18-24: reakcije, razmišljanja i osvrti učesnika programa Sumnjiva lica, na predstavu Quizoola!. Mladi kritičari svoje učešće na festivalu započinju kritikom uživo.

Kritika uživo je forma kritike nastala kao odgovor na predstave dugog trajanja - mogli bismo je nazvati kritikom dugog trajanja. Tekstovi se objavljuju odmah po pisanju, piše se samo u toku trajanja predstave, a kolektiv kritičara ima slobodu da odgovara na tekstove drugih autora iz grupe, piše u dva, tri ili četiri glasa, eksperimentiše formalno, na nivou sadržaja itd. Dugo trajanje, koje suštinski utiče na iskustvo publike, zahteva mentalnu i fizičku izdržljivost, i stvara posebnu vrstu veze između publike i glumaca, tako postaje i bitna odrednica kritike.

Publika predstave kritičare će moći ne samo da čita već i da vidi - jer će se pisanje odvijati u foajeu Bitefa.

Sumnjiva lica su: Ivona Janjić, Đorđe Kosić, Borisav Matić, Marija Milovanović, Milica Petrović, Irena Plaović, Mina Stanikić i Andrej Čanji.
