I keep seeing stuff drift past on my dash talking about “holding characters accountable” for whatever they’ve done and honestly that’s some of the stupidest shit I’ve ever heard. characters are not real people. they do not need to be held accountable because they have not done anything that harms real people. this is because they are not real. it’s a symptom of a punitive approach to the world and it gets even weirder when it’s applied to people who don’t actually exist. You can try and hold real people accountable all you want, but a) that’s often a losing game because if they’re not willing to take accountability for their actions, you can’t force them to, b) approaching harmful behavior with the attitude of someone has to grovel and repent to be forgiven as opposed to helping them take steps to make actionable and lasting change and right wrongs in the process is just a very punitive approach that doesn’t lead to lasting improvement, and c) neither of the two points above matter for fictional characters because they are not real. you don’t have to hold them accountable because they have not harmed anyone.

All of which are "finished" fics, though one is an ongoing anthology. And at least two could have potential follow-ups.

Interesting to see it all laid out like this. I didn't realise I had such a lovely for very short first lines. Though I do know that I always like to get the reader straight in with either an emotion or a mood, or location. I never want a reader to get past that first sentence wondering what's going on.

I'm also rather surprised and chuffed at the range I've done. Whilst they're all pretty much Rhaenys-centric (or Rhaenys/Corlys), I've got fluff, angst, AU, missing scenes, novelising aired scenes. Done things from both seasons, too, and before the seasons. And different tenses as well. That's quite good, I think?

They’d been walking for much longer than she’d been promised.

Neville wished, with all of his being, that his parents could see him now.

The question made complete sense to her. As far as Ginny was concerned, it was the responsibility of any time-traveller to not only remedy mistakes of the past, but to also take steps to ensure personal success upon returning to the original timeline.

The owl arrived that morning while they took their breakfast.

If Hermione had to reprimand one more customer for leaving their drinks and empty ice cream cups on her bookshelves, she was going to explode.

I don't notice any particular pattern to my opening lines...unless I'm missing something completely obvious. I do intentionally avoid starting with dialogue as much as possible and, for the most part, write in third-person and past tense.

Using Hermione as my default FMC is also a preference that hasn't changed since I first started writing HP fanfiction a couple of years ago; she's simply always been the one I most easily relate to. I have been branching out more lately to Pansy, Narcissa, and Lavender, not to mention the various MMCs I always gravitate to.

Tell us your unpopular opinion?

I think it’s an author’s job to be explicit in that they’re writing characters of color, but I think it’s the reader’s job to not be obtuse and recognize when there’s subtext or coding or plot points that denote a character of color.

an example. at no point do I write in the behemoth “Finnick and Annie are Latine in this story”. however, I do have an enormous plot point where the government is trying to take away their child because of perceived parenting failings, and Annie explicitly says that it’s because they speak a different language and live in a way that the dominant government doesn’t understand or relate to, AND the entire family is forced to explain their culture and to some extent still fails to make the person who’s trying to take their kid understand it, because they don’t want to and don’t try to. this is an issue that extremely disproportionately affects families of color today and the reaction of the person in power is a reflection of how those families are treated. (Annie’s mental health also plays an enormous role in this, but her being a woman of color cannot be separated out from how people view her mental illness.)

I’m not trying to call anyone out but at some point, there also needs to be some accountability from the reader. authors need to be explicit in their representation, yes, but they also should be able to write stories about the issues that poc face and have the audience meet them halfway and understand that they’re encountering a story about poc. authors should not have to hold the audience’s hand and explain systemic inequality and bigotry 101, unless it’s a book designed to do that. you can’t recognize what you don’t know exists, and a lot of people are ignorant, but I do think that readers at least need to think semi critically about the narratives they’re encountering and try to recognize portrayals of systemic inequality when they see them.

And another called "dialogue from fics I'll never write", which has random things like Nurse Jackie, Maryland, and Holby as well, since the show ended and I pivoted away from starting new fics for that fandom.

Hey! So I’m doing something new, because my muse has been avoiding me because life has been kicking my ass. By which I mean, I write fics for a new fandom now as well as my usually scheduled bullshit. So, if you also are kind of obsessed with Corlys/Rhaenys from HOTD, I’ve got two fics up for them now, and at least one to two more planned (all but the one smutty one shot are more political intrigue and life during wartime and ancient Valyrian magic than pure ship fics, but also let me enjoy my favorite couples damn it).

This was a fun journey! I quickly had to go back to the deep vaults for some of these, so don't judge (ughhh that was not a well executed lore drop, why did I write that in present tense, etc...) and I seem to have more recently moved towards grand declarative sentences that summarize the events from a particular character's POV, like Peter blaming everything on Florence, as opposed to starting with a character action like Narcissa lying in bed. Who knows if that's better. Definitely something to watch!

This is an excerpt from chapter 5 of "upon my hearth (a home you shall have"...

Without granting time for Alicent to do anything but widen her eyes in surprise, Rhaenyra stepped forwards and heaped the material on the redhead's skinny frame.

The girl let out a surprised oof at the sudden pressure upon her shoulders, and her upper body responded to the weight by almost toppling over. Rhaenyra waited until Alicent had regained her balance before speaking. “You were cold.” The statement caused Alicent to gape up at her like a fish who’d been tossed upon the wooden planks of a ship and told to sing. “I am not—! What are you—no! Rhaenyra, this is your cloak.” The older woman shrugged and crossed her arms over her chest. “So? You are cold; I am not.” Alicent clenched her jaw. “Rhaenyra. This is ridiculous, you cannot just—” “I just did, actually.” “This is your cloak—” “I have others.” (She did not.) “Rhaenyra—” “Alicent.” The girl’s eyes narrowed into slits, but any heat that glare would have conveyed faded with the way her shaking hands gripped onto the white furs. When it became clear that Rhaenyra’s limbs had no intention to return the cloak to more domestic shores, Alicent closed her eyes and let out a heavy, frustrated sigh. (And just like that, Rhaenyra knew victory was within her grasp.)
