1. Mostly the foster homes he’s gone through, any mention of his foster parents and he completely shuts down.

2. Pretty shitty. He’ll down several bags of sour gummy worms to feel better.

3. His emotions, especially anger or fear, because it makes his powers “turn on” and he hates that.

4. A lot of negative self talk, used to do sh but can’t anymore because of his powers making it really, really hard.

5. His family (bio sis and bio bro + his foster sister Julie) along with his friends. He loves them.

7. Anger and fear. He hates it when people see his powers and both those emotions kind of “activate” it.

i think it’s really a shame that body hair is frowned upon. i find it really nice and pretty to have, which is why raj’s powers are very specifically linked not just to his head-hair, but to all of his hair. of course we all know the ‘mutations as gayness’ metaphor but also a puberty metaphor. so i really do like the idea of raj looking almost “normal”. if you look closely, you can almost see the light reflect off his arms, and his hair has this slightly unnatural sheen to it. only if you look real close, when the sun hit his skin at the right angle.

only when his emotions become "wild" is it really obvious that he is a mutant and that's really part of the point. people forget a lot of the time poc are viewed in a very specific manner and to be anything other than clear headed calm and rational often gets poc men branded as 'aggressive' or 'scary' (white women tears, anyone?). i like using intersectionality of real-world & the fictional racism to make a point with raj. indians/south asians are often viewed as either "extremely intelligent" to the point of being asexual (via the model minority stereotype) beings or as "aggressive" (specifically for south asian men/mascs). his powers tends to "spike" only when he's scared. a biological defense mechanism, if you will, but because it "looks" scary, and he could "potentially" hurt people; that's why he gets targeted.

now raj didn’t break them out of greymalkin. his bigoted foster parents snitched on him and ORCHIS snapped him up to bring him and the others (minus calico) to greymalkin. they underestimated how much a group of traumatized teenagers would rebel and so after like an hour raj realized that his hair was cutting through the cuffs and he could escape. obviously he helped the other kids (val, sofia hoturu) also escape and that is how they all met :3

im planning on a fight scene between the outliers and the NMs and i was internally considering how it would play out. berto isnt there for Reasons but i think this is how the matchups would go. sam -> val xuan -> sofia rahne -> raj yana -> becca & hoturu anyway i think raj would realize rahne is a girl and be like "waitwaitwait i can't hit a GIRL" and rahnes like "i mean i'm going to hit ye so." "yeah but like. guys can't hit girls. that's not allowed." "we're literally fighting." "yeah but i don't wanna PUNCH you :(" meanwhile sofia is internally slamming her head against the wall while also trying to fight xuan (which is a losing battler tbf lol)

48. Scariest moment of their life

Oooh I feel like he'd say the crash where his parents died but i feel like the truth is that he has two scariest moments. The first was when he found out he was going to be seperate from his siblings in foster care and likely would never see them again, and the second is right before his powers manifested. When his foster parents held him down as he fought and cried and they tried to cut his hair short because "guys should have short hair" and he thought he was going to lose one of the few things he had left connecting himself to his family and culture.

i need you to understand that raj didn't have like. the most perfect childhood ever but like he had a good one and his family loved him a heckuva lot. but like after he meets his brother again after like 3 years the first thing they do is argue about the ending of a tv show
