# Hermitage, Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
The main or Jordan staircase of the Winter Palace.
Designed by the great Italian architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, born in Paris in 1700, later transferred to Russia where he was naturalized.
He developed an easily recognizable style, a current of Russian Baroque called the Elizabethan Baroque after the Tsarina Elizabeth.
The main stairway of the Winter Palace is also known as the Jordan Staircase as it was used by the royal family to go to the Neva River for baptisms.

BONUS POLL 4: Look at all the snazzy buildings in (and around) Sankt Peterburg!
Before we convene on the final bloodbath of the season, we should just... Relax and find some more chill topic to discuss. Like fancy residences. No, I'm serious.
I've picked a handful of the most interesting residences built by house Romanov. I'm guessing the most avowed of the Romanov nerds in our audience will have the time of their life... But even if you've never heard about any of these (which, c'mon, would you really even be here if you haven't at least heard of them?) - well, at least you can check out the ample photographic material included. Because who doesn't like to look at some good Rastrelli?
OUR CONTESTANTS:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Winter Palace Construction began: 1710 on the orders of Pyotr I. Description: A historical behemoth, site of both the legendary 300th anniversary ball and Bloody Sunday. Also the seat of the Provisional Government, and as such at the center of attention during February Revolution. Part of the Hermitage museum (my beloved).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oranienbaum (palace complex) Construction began: 1710 on the orders of Pyotr I. (well, Menshikov) Description: As mentioned, originally built as Menshikov's residence, but after his fall from grace, the palace was taken over by the royal family. Its most notable resident was Pyotr III. before his ascencion. Look, I just think it's cute, okay?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anichkov Palace Construction began: 1741 on the orders of Elizaveta Petrovna Description: Alexander III. really loved this one for some reason (the fact that his father narrowly avoided being assassinated in the previous residence, Winter Palace, might've had something to do with it). Nikolai II. grew up here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Great) Gatchina Palace Construction began: 1766 on the orders of Ekaterina II. Description: Originally built for Grigory Orlov of all people, but after his death, Ekaterina thought it's so swell she bought it for the royal family. Alexander III. loved this one too, to the point that it was called "The Citadel Of Autocracy".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alexander Palace Construction began: 1793 on the orders of Ekaterina II. Description: Built for her beloved grandson Alexander I. as a wedding gift. Alexander moved out of it after his ascencion to the throne, giving it to his brother Nikolai I. Nikolai II. was born there, and it subsequently became his favourite residence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Saint Michael's (Engineers') Castle Built: in 1797 by Pavel I. Description: Pour one out for my boi Pavel. He didn't feel safe in Winter Palace, so he built a new one for himself, and a few weeks after it was finished, he was assassinated there. After that whole mess, the royal family didn't want anything to do with it, so they gave it to Main Engineering School (higher education institution for army engineers). I picked this one just for the historical value, and for poor Pavel I.

The Catherine Palace
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Catherine Palace is one of the largest in the vicinity of St. Petersburg. It is located in Pushkin (formerly Tsarskoye Selo), 25 kilometers south of St. Petersburg. The palace was built in 1717 as the summer residence of Empress Catherine I.
In 1752, Empress Elizabeth asked the architect Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli to rebuild the palace because she considered it too old-fashioned and small. The reconstruction lasted four years; the modern palace was completely rebuilt in the Russian Baroque style. The size of the Grand Palace is seen immediately. The final touch in the construction and decoration of the Catherine Palace was the Main Staircase in the Rococo style, created in 1863 by the Russian architect I. Monighetti.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the Revolution, the Catherine Palace was turned into a museum. Today, 32 rooms of the palace are in exhibition. The most interesting place of the palace for tourists is the famous Amber room, restored in 2003. The main decoration of the Amber Room was made at the beginning of the XVIII century in Prussia, in 1716. It was presented by King Friedrich Wilhelm I to Peter I; in 1746, it was completed and fit in the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg in 1755, it was moved back to Tsarskoye Selo (see two photos of the Amber Room below.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Catherine Palace is as impressive inside as outside. The Great Hall (below), also known as the Hall of Light, measures nearly 1,000 square meters and occupies the full width of the palace so that there are superb views on either side. Using similar techniques but on a smaller scale, the White Dining Room is equally luxurious but, like many of the rooms in the palace, its grandeur is softened by the presence of a beautiful traditional blue-and-white tiled stove in the corner.

the lion is so unbelievably small, only the jars are normal sized; hadn't Bartolomeo Rastrelli seen them somewhere in the book or at the zoo in Rome
it is so small to make sure that Samson is the winner, which is so no matter the size but - for the safety reasons it is small
