the editing of the games so that no one knew what really happened until haymitch told them AFTER THE WAR

THE EPILOGUE!! haymitch talking about katniss and peeta CALLING THEM HIS FAMILY! saying katniss is like him but luckier. finally getting to see a world where there's no sunrise on the reaping...

all the additional context this gives the original trilogy: haymitch calling katniss sweetheart, knowing her parents and where the pin came from, mags wiress and beetee lore, (beetee has only had one plan ever and no matter how many times it doesn't work he will try again), plutarch (what is his deal, what made him want to stop the games so bad, is he actually just that sympathetic to the districts? what's his stake in all this?), knowing that people have tried to stop the games and start a rebellion many times, haymitch raising geese in the epilogue...

the family soap opera that is the Metroid series

Zero Mission - Samus returns home for the first time since leaving for the military academy all those years ago and really gets into it with her mother. Mom has gotten super alt-right while Samus was away and thing escalate to a physical confrontation with Mother and the bad crowd she's fallen in with.

Samus Returns - Samus, having cut off her family, is traveling and cleaning up her Mother's mess, and ends up adopting the newborn daughter of one of the unsavory types that Samus had to deal with while there.

Super Metroid - Samus' mom goes crazy grandma mode and kidnaps her newborn daughter. Samus has to travel home once again and deal with Mother and her shitty friends again, and some new ones that have moved in in the meantime. They've proven a bad influence on the kiddo, and three generations of strong independent women come to blows by the end of things.

Metroid: Other M - Mother cleans up her act and gets a job caretaking for kids of her granddaughter's ethnicity displaced by military conflicts. This, unfortunately, brings her into conflict with (a corrupt faction within) the military, who want to use the kids for their own nefarious ends. Samus gets involved and, unexpectedly, so does her estranged step-father. More family drama ensues, with both mom and dad done in by the end.

Metroid Fusion - or not! Samus once again comes to odds with the military that used to employ her, as they hire her work a shift at her absent daughter's homeland. But, surprise surprise, that corrupt faction of the military is once again trying to take advantage of her daughter's people, and Samus is now in the thick of it. To top it all off, they've assigned her a keeper... her step-dad, back from the dead! Heartfelt discussions, changes of heart, and revelations of Samus' heritage ensue.

Metroid Dread - Samus and step-dad, still working together, run afoul of a plot by Samus' bio-father, who doesn't respect her pronouns and wants her to follow in his militant and despotic footsteps. Samus has a thing or three to say about this.

Metroid Prime, Echoes, and Corruption - (in its original timeline slot) a decade on, Samus' daughter never quite shook free from the bad influence of the folks her grandmother's former shitty friends, and is now going through a rebellious goth phase. Samus Junior, now calling herself "Dark" Samus, fell in with that same shady crowd, but has since taken over their whole operation! Now at odds, Samus strives to set her daughter right, tracking her down and cleaning up her messes.
