MY OWN EXPERIENCE WITH RAVES

I feel really lucky that my chosen concept has so many different aspects at which I can look at it. Before I moved to Birmingham I had never really heard of raves. My parents had occasionally spoken about them but having grown up in the countryside where my nearest nightclub was over an hour away in a car, nightclubs and raves were things I rarely attended and even after moving to Birmingham it took me a few good months before I considered attending my first rave mainly due to the fact I thought it would be full of people off their heads and weird music which I couldn’t sing or dance along too but I was pleasantly surprised, as I queued up outside Lab 11 Digbeth on a Sunday afternoon you could hear the sound of the electronic dance music coming from inside the warehouse. Just queuing up alone was a different vibe to any I had experienced on a night out before. Groups of people began to chat with other groups of people in the queue some drinking water, cans of alcohol some smoking. It was the first time I had ever even been out during the day to a music event apart from festivals and the mood of the people around me seemed different from the mood at night. When I reached the front of the queue I was greeted by what I found out was a sniffer dog, and I was told to empty my pockets as a security guard patted me down, luckily whenever I go out I like to travel lightly so the only thing I had on me was my phone, ID and my house key. I was directed down a corridor to two rooms, both of which were blaring out different types of music and I went where the mood followed me. 

Throughout the afternoon and early evening, I had a decent amount of time in each of the rooms, one playing drum and bass where everybody was jumping up and down like crazy people to the beat and the room was displaying a light show which added to the atmosphere the ravers had already created. Boys without their shirts on and people throwing bottles of open water into the crowd to help people cool down. Another room played techno music where people bopped up and down in sunglasses dancing with their hands and moving their knees at the same time to the song; this genre of music differed to the drum and bass, it seemed more uplifting and calming to the angry drum and bass ravers and the final room which seemed to be playing a mix between techno and disco. This seemed to be the room which was mostly calm with the older of the ravers situating themselves there. It was a leal organised rave so there were bars which stocked alcohol and water and a ‘RaveSafe’ team with welfare staff and a medical team ensuring that people were safe at all times. It seemed to me that Lab 11 had created the best of both worlds, they knew raves were going to take place whether people like them or not and people need a place to rave so why not put in all the measures including security and welfare staff to ensure that if this is what people want to do they can do it safely. 

The overall vibe of my first experience at a rave was completely positive and different to anything else I had experienced in my life in a good way. Everybody at the rave seemed to be nicer and more relaxed than in a nightclub, I didn’t feel intimidated by the girls or uncomfortable by the boys. Everybody just seemed to be there for the music and to have a good time, I enjoyed myself so much that I didn’t even drink alcohol because I was having a good time without it, and even though some people there were under the influence I knew that LAB 11 had taken out all the measures they could to stop people from taking drugs and they seemed to have measures in place such as a medics office to ensure that if something did happen the correct support was around them. 

I’m completely aware that this type of rave is not for everybody and that some people are more attracted to the illegal raves due to the excitement in the risks and how they are completely free with the only thing stopping you from enjoying yourself is the police and I can see why people don’t like the thought of these kinds of events becoming too commercialised and into nightclub scenes but it honestly felt like I had been at a festival for the day and only for £12 I'm completely converted.
