Rajasthan Royals History: The Legacy of IPL's First Champions

The Rajasthan Royals (RR), based in Jaipur, are one of the most iconic franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Known for their underdog spirit, the Royals shocked the cricketing world by winning the inaugural IPL season in 2008 under the legendary Shane Warne. Since then, their journey has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows — a story of resilience, revival, and reinvention.
The Birth of a Franchise
Rajasthan Royals was founded in 2008 as one of the original eight IPL teams. Emerging as the least expensive franchise during the initial IPL auction, it was purchased by Emerging Media for $67 million. Despite having a modest squad compared to big-budget teams, RR made headlines by playing smart cricket and relying on young, unknown talents.
2008: Champions Against All Odds
The 2008 IPL season remains the crowning glory in RR’s history. With Australian spin legend Shane Warne acting as both captain and coach, the team fostered a winning mentality. Players like Yusuf Pathan, Sohail Tanvir, and Ravindra Jadeja became household names. Rajasthan Royals defeated Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling final to lift the trophy.
Struggles and Setbacks (2009–2014)
In the years following their maiden title, RR struggled to maintain consistency. Despite occasional flashes of brilliance and strong individual performances — especially from Rahul Dravid, Shane Watson, and Ajinkya Rahane — the team often missed out on playoff berths.
A significant turning point came in 2013, when the team reached the playoffs and ended as semifinalists. However, this success was overshadowed by controversy, as the franchise became embroiled in a major scandal.
Why Was RR Banned?
Many fans still ask: “Why was RR banned from the IPL?” The answer lies in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal. The controversy shook Indian cricket when three RR players — Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan, and Ajit Chandila — were arrested for spot-fixing. The fallout was massive.
In 2015, the Supreme Court-appointed Lodha Committee found the franchise co-owner Raj Kundra guilty of betting on IPL matches. As a result, Rajasthan Royals, along with Chennai Super Kings (whose owner was also found guilty), was suspended for two seasons — 2016 and 2017. This significant ban tarnished the franchise’s image and disrupted its momentum.
(If you’re looking for a more in-depth breakdown of the scandal and its implications, read our full piece: Why was RR banned?)
The Comeback: 2018 and Beyond
Rajasthan Royals returned to the IPL in 2018 with renewed vigor. The team retained Ajinkya Rahane and added stars like Steve Smith, Ben Stokes, and Jos Buttler. Though they made it to the playoffs that year, inconsistency continued to haunt them in subsequent seasons.
RR has since focused heavily on building a strong Indian core and nurturing emerging talents — a return to their 2008 philosophy. Youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, and Sanju Samson (now captain) have become key pillars in their setup.
Rajasthan Royals: More Than Just Cricket
Off the field, Rajasthan Royals have been active in community engagement and cricket development. Initiatives like the Royals School of Business and grassroots talent scouting reflect the franchise’s long-term vision.
Conclusion: A Legacy Still in the Making
Rajasthan Royals’ history is a compelling narrative of triumph, tribulation, and tenacity. From being crowned inaugural champions to enduring a two-year suspension, the franchise has always bounced back with character. As they continue their journey in the IPL, fans hope to see a second title added to their legacy.
Stay tuned for more updates on RR and other IPL franchises. And if you’re still curious about their controversial suspension, don’t forget to check out: Why was RR banned?

[ad_1] GG News Bureau New Delhi, 28th Nov. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP) on Thursday following her decisive victory in Kerala’s Wayanad during the recent bypolls. The 52-year-old Congress leader, who is joining her mother Sonia and brother Rahul in Parliament, took her oath in Hindi while holding a copy of the Constitution. This marks a rare moment in Indian politics where three members of the same family will serve together in Parliament. Ravindra Chavan, who won the Nanded bypoll in Maharashtra, also took his oath in Marathi, following the demise of his father, Vasantrao Chavan. Priyanka Gandhi’s victory, with a massive margin of over 4.1 lakh votes, surpassed the tally of her brother Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad. This victory marks her first election as an MP, five years after entering active politics in 2019 and being appointed Congress General Secretary. Her entry into Parliament comes at a challenging time for the Congress party, which has faced setbacks in recent elections in Haryana and Maharashtra. It remains to be seen whether her presence in Parliament can help rejuvenate the party’s fortunes. Often compared to her grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, due to their similar looks and speaking style, Priyanka has been a prominent campaigner for the Congress. Her election victory is seen as a pivotal moment for the party, which will be hoping for her leadership to help restore its electoral momentum. In her campaign, Priyanka Gandhi defeated Sathyan Mokeri of the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the Wayanad bypoll, further consolidating the Congress’s position in Kerala. On Wednesday, Congress leaders from Wayanad handed over her election certificate and extended their congratulations to the newly elected MP. "Nuts And Bolts Were Rusted": Why Chhatrapati Shivaji Statue Collapsed
An FIR has been registered against the contractor of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg which collapsed on Monday just eight months since it was inaugurated. The statue was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 4 in 2023. The FIR was filed against contractor Jaydeep Apte and structural consultant Chetan Patil under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges include collusion, fraud, and endangering public safety. The FIR follows a complaint by the Public Works Department (PWD), which claims the statue’s construction was of poor quality, and the nuts and bolts used in the structure were found to be rusted.
Local citizens and tourists had previously expressed their concerns about the statue’s deteriorating condition. Despite these warnings, including an alert from the assistant engineer of the Malvan division of the PWD on August 20, no preventive action was taken. The PWD stated that the rusting nuts and bolts posed a risk to the statue’s stability, yet the warnings were ignored.
“The steel used in making of the statue had started rusting. The PWD had already written to Navy officials informing them about the statue catching rust and requested them to take appropriate steps,” said Sindhudurg guardian minister Ravindra Chavan said.
The work on the statue began on September 8, with the Indian Navy, which has no expertise in statue construction, being tasked with erecting the statue and its pedestal. The statue was unveiled on Navy Day on December 4, at Rajkot Fort, with Prime Minister Modi presiding over the event.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde acknowledged the incident and attributed the collapse to strong winds, claiming they were blowing at a speed of 45 km per hour at the time. However, the Opposition has criticised the government, accusing it of negligence.

[ad_1] GG News Bureau New Delhi, 28th Nov. Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 12 noon on Thursday after Opposition members, including Congress and Samajwadi Party leaders, staged protests over several issues, including the Adani controversy and the recent violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. The session began with Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, elected from Kerala’s Wayanad, and Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan, elected from Maharashtra’s Nanded, taking their oaths as newly elected MPs. However, shortly after, several Opposition members stood up to demand discussions on the allegations against the Adani Group and other issues. As protests intensified, with some Opposition members standing in the Well of the House and shouting slogans, Speaker Om Birla urged the members to allow the Question Hour to proceed. He reminded them that they had been given ample opportunities to raise their concerns, but the disruption of proceedings was unacceptable. He further stated that issues should be raised in a dignified manner, as was done during the Constituent Assembly debates. Amid the chaos, only one question was taken up before the Speaker decided to adjourn the proceedings until noon. Opposition members had demanded a discussion on the Adani Group allegations and the violence in Sambhal, where recent clashes had resulted in several deaths. On Wednesday, the Adani Group clarified that neither Gautam Adani nor his nephew, Sagar Adani, had been charged with any violations of the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) in connection with the bribery case filed in New York.
