I think people really underestimate how grueling creative projects can be. “It should always be fun” well… no nothing is fun 24/7. You’re giving people the impression that if they’re not having fun creating always, there’s something wrong with them or the project.
So just a reminder that writing, especially if there’s a dedicated projected you’re working on all of the time, can feel tiresome and exhausting. Yes! There are fun moments for sure. But to act like it’s going to be fun all of the time is unrealistic. You’ll never finish a project if you’re only working on it when you’re having fun. Oftentimes it’s about sitting at that keyboard and typing even when you don’t feel like it. Even if you only add 20 words to your word count. What matters is that you don’t give up.
Anyways I just wanted to give some validation for the fellow Tired writers out there. Sometimes writing doesn’t feel fun because of our own life circumstances. Maybe we didn’t sleep enough last night. Maybe we’re at a tricky part in the narrative. Maybe a plot hole developed. It’s perfectly normal to experience ebbs and flows when it comes to your writing enjoyment. Writing, like any other outlet, has its challenges. Tons of things can make writing not feel fun. Especially if you’re stuck on a certain part or battling imposter syndrome.
It’s also perfectly normal that your excitement is different the day you started vs a year out. It’s likely lost its allure because you’ve worked at it so tirelessly and gotten used to the idea vs when it was a novelty. This is also normal, and often why writers struggle when they get shiny new ideas to have. The key is to stick to it regardless of fleeting feelings or distractions that arise. I believe in you. You can do it.
