Part 6 of A Treatise of Embroidery, crochet, and knitting with illustrations
By George C. Perkins, Anna Grayson Ford, and M. Heminway & Sons Silk co circa 1899.


Please note, this book was written in 1899, and as such uses a racist term to refer to the dyes that were used for the thread. If you'd like to read more about this period in time, the term, and the stereotypes that the Victorians had, I've actually linked the wikipedia article here that goes more in depth. It's not the end all be all of it, but it's a good starting place for anyone wanting to educate themselves on the topic.

Page 29. Lessons In Embroidery.
This page has the pattern for the strawberry and blossoms embroidery on it. It resembles a paint by numbers/letters image with a table showing the corresponding colours. I will try my best to explain the image, but first the colour charts.
Berries-Ripe.
Red: 655 shade number 1, 655 shade number 2, 656 shade number 3, 657 shade number 4, 658 shade number 5, 659 shade number 6, 660 shade number 7, 661 shade number 8.
Blossoms: 691 shade number 9.
Centre: 647 shade number 10, 409 1/2 shade number 11, 410 shade number 12.
Unripe Berries: 682 shade number 13, 683 shade number 14, 684 shade number 15.
Leaves and Stems.

Design No. 153 — Strawberry. 18 inch. See Colored Plate C1.
Description.— Fill in berry crosswise, shortstitch on the wrong side, not much filling. For filling to raise the berry use M. Heminway & Sons' white Persian Floss. Start at the point of berry with two strands of red, 655, shading with one strand as dark red as 661. For an unripe berry start with light green, 682 and 683, shading into the green the light pink, 655, making the berry as ripe in color as 660. The seeds on the red berries put on with small stitches, gold, 409 1/2. On those that are not ripe use green, 428.
Blossoms. — White, 691, shadow of green, 682 on lower petals, touching a few of the new blossoms with light pink, 0655; pollen of 647, 409 1/2, 410.
Leaves. — On the outer edge of the leaf use two strands, shading toward centre with one, use a little brown, 300 and 301, for faded part of leaf.
Scallop. — Button-hole stitch in pink, 581, Spanish Floss, or 691, with an outline above scallop of one strand filo, 310.
Now I will describe the first illustration which shows the embroidery by letters/numbers diagram. I will be describing the image from the bottom to top as the spray of strawberries and blossoms flow in a diagonal from the bottom left to the upper right.
We start with two parallel, diagonal stems that branch off in multiple directions to hold the entirety of the design. The two stems are done in shade letters D and E. The rightmost stem slips under two leaves, forking into a third tendril, before the left fork curves gracefully to the right and ending in a strawberry. The right fork goes downwards and forms the triple fork from where the three large strawberry leaves all come from in this piece. An upper one, a bottom one, and one off to the right that is slightly twisted so the underside of the leaf tip is visible.
Shade letters for the bottommost leaf, from base to tip, left to right. Starting at the top where the base joins the stem: 1st row: E, O, R. 2nd row: E. 3rd row: F, C. 4th row: D, E, E, D. 5th row: B, D, C. leaf tip: C.
For the twisted leaf at the right of the previous: 1st Row: C, D, C. 2nd Row: D, E, C. 3rd Row: C, D. 4th Row: E, D, B. 5th Row: F. Leaf tip: A.

Back at the beginning, where the stems are parallel, the leftmost stem forks before the two separate bits slip under the upper large leaf that we described earlier. The right fork curves up and to the left into a strawberry while the left fork curves up behind it. It would seem a second strawberry also emerges from a stem coming from behind the same leaf, although it does not show a fork. This berry sits just under the other.
Higher Strawberry: 1st Row: 4, 6. 2nd Row: 3, 2, 5, 3, 3. 3rd Row: 2, 15, 4, 8, 3. 4th Row: 14, 2. Strawberry Tip: 13.
Lower Strawberry: 1st Row: 8. 2nd Row: 5, 6, 7, 5. 3rd Row: 4, 4, 5, 4. 4th Row: 2, 2, 2, 2. 5th row: 1, 1, 1.
Only two of the little strawberry leaf tops have any kind of letter indication, all of them combinations of C, D, and B, so your guess is as good as mine.
Emerging from the top strawberry is another series of three stems, two of which appear to have forked somewhere behind the berry unseen. The left stem goes up and then promptly forks before slipping under a fully bloomed strawberry blossom, and then emerging from the top with a single leaf gracing the end. Somewhere behind the flower another tendril has forked off this one and goes up to end in a tiny blossom not yet bloomed. Next to that is the stem that will be described in a few paragraphs, and then another stem leading to a small blossom, that is also not fully bloomed.
Big Blossom: This has 5 petals in total, and all the petals are tipped in shade number 9, and all excepting the leftmost petal gradiate to shade number 13. The leftmost petal gradiates to shade number 14, and then the center is shade number 10.
Small Blossom: 9 at the tip, 13 at the base, there are 3 petals showing.
Tiny Blossom: same, 9 tip, 13 base, also 3 petals showing.
Back to under the blossom, the right stem from the original fork leads up to an elegant waving stem that branches off into several tendrils mostly decorated with a pair of leaves each.
The left tendril from that fork extends up a ways, waving a bit and is done in shade letter B, and then forks one last time culminating in a pair of tiny leaves on the right fork and a waving tendril on the left that finishes in shade letter A.
Leaf 1: Base E, Tip D. Leaf 2: Base C, Tip B.
The right tendril from the fork that leads into the last also immediately forks again ending in a pair of tiny leaves coming from each tendril.
From lowest leaf to highest, base to tip:
Leaf 1 right tendril: E. Leaf 2 right tendril: D, C. Leaf 3 Left Tendril: D, E. Leaf 4 Left tendril: C, B.
all the tiny leaves leaves save one are done in two colours, one for the base and one for the tip. So wherever you decide to put a tiny leaf, you can keep the colour schemes in mind.
There is an image at the bottom captioned Design No 153- Strawberry. 18 inch. See Coloured Plate C1.
This has what appears to be a doily with an embroidered scalloped edge and the large strawberry image placed at the top and bottom of the doily, flowing with the circular edge. There is a small smattering of petals coming off of an extra pair of fallen blossoms that were added to one edge, and a small detached strawberry on the other.

The extremeheat is likely to kill you before the flames reach you. -shelter in a room that has two exits, such as a door or window including one directly to the outside. It is important to be able to see outside so you know what is happening with the fire. -if your home catches on fire and conditions inside become unbearable, you need to get out and go to an area that has already been burnt. It may still be too hot to remain outside, so you'll need to seek shelter in another structure or last resort option. 14th: A US Forest Service trail sign that reads “THE DEADLY BELLS. The beautiful Maroon Bells, and their neighbor Pyramid Peak, have claimed many lives in the past few years. They are not extreme technical climbs, but they are unbelievably deceptive. The rock is down-sloping, rotten, loose, and unstable. It kills quickly and without warning. The snowfields are treacherous, poorly consolidated, and no place for a novice climber. The gullies are death traps. Expert climbers who did not know the proper routes have died on these peaks. Don't repeat their mistakes, for only rarely have these mountains given a second chance. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLIMB IF NOT QUALIFIED.”

a comic about meeting a friend who i haven’t seen in the last five years except through texts, and my thoughts and feelings on it.

It goes through the years 2020 up until 2022, wishing him happy birthday, happy new year, and him replying. The conversations get longer and a little more livelier. The page's text reads, "this went on for five years. The back and forth on new year’s or his birthday. A cycle of me texting him, and him responding, and somehow after five years of these bi-annual conversations, after only talking to each other via texts for years-" The end of the page is dated 2nd November 2022, and shows a snippet of a conversation. The artist asks if he's going to Comic Fiesta, and he says he might, but otherwise they can meet up outside of it. The page's text ends with "- we finally ended up planning a meetup." [end id 5].

"He's a whole lot different," the text continues as the artist looks over to the guy pulling a bow back in an archery game, "from how I remembered back then." The artist stares at the guy's fingers, as he has many rings on that he is also admiring. "Not that it's a bad thing," the text clarifies, "it's good." [start id 10]: The final page of the comic. It is a full lineart drawing of the cafe that the two of them are sitting in, and of the background beyond the glass windows. The artist smiles, still listening after putting down her cup, listening as the guy continues talking to her. Both of their drinks and cake are finished, but they continue sitting there, talking. These six ranking factors are from an era long behind us, often abused but still relevant. Only three of these factors have a significant impact on your rankings (we’ll get to that later), but all of them serve a purpose for both your readers and the search engine crawlers.
Dangerous On-Page Factors
These two have caused a lot of debate in the past, primarily because they were both important ranking factors that could make or break your on-page SEO. This is no longer the case, and many SEO’s would argue that they have no benefit at all while still being potentially dangerous. Optimizing for them is likely to have no impact while over-optimizing can be detrimental.
In earlier versions of the Google algorithm, keyword density was necessary for the crawler to understand what your content was about and which keywords it should rank for. But once SEO’s started abusing it Google cracked the whip, punishing websites heavily for stepping over the boundary.
Eventually, Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) was implemented, making keyword density redundant. That change alone means that keyword stuffing is now useless. The only reason you should ever think about keyword density is to ensure that when writing naturally you haven’t stepped over the boundary.
The Meta Keywords Tag played a similar role when search engines struggled to interpret content in any intelligible manner. Of course, now they don’t need any help and using this tag only informs Google that you’re actively trying to manipulate their algorithm.
Optimizing for Rankings
In the past, you could succeed by using your keywords in every single tag, header, and paragraph on the page. But doing that today is going to earn you an over-optimization penalty, or at least a negative impact on your rankings.
Thorough keyword research is going to give you a selection of keywords, both short-tail, and long-tail, which you can optimize for within your content. Short-tail keywords are the most competitive while long-tails are less-so because they have less traffic and offer a lower incentive to websites targeting them.
Title Tag
Your title tag is arguably the most potent tag on the page. It represents the entire article, and therefore it makes sense that Google would pay attention to the words that are within it. With that in mind, it makes sense to use your most competitive keywords in your title tag because it’s likely to give the most significant boost and therefore help you to rank.
There is some research to suggest that including your keyword towards the beginning of your title tag is beneficial, but this often isn’t practical. If you are doing this consistently, you also leave a large footprint should Google ever choose to penalize sites for manipulating rankings in this way.
It’s also common knowledge that Google uses CTR (click through rate) to influence their SERP’s, and therefore you should also optimize your title for readability and user interaction.
If you are creative in your title tag, you can often include both a short-tail keyword and a long-tail keyword. Not only is this a natural way to write a headline, but it also ensures that you’re getting as much benefit from your title tag as possible.
Header Tags
In most cases, you will make your H1 tag the same as your title tag, many platforms like WordPress and Joomla will do this automatically. This means that the strongest header tag at your disposal is the H2 tag.
The H2 tag is your chance to optimize for the next most important keywords, rather than including your main keyword again. The 2nd keyword you optimize for is probably lower competition, and therefore an H2 tag is often enough to put you in an excellent position to rank on the first page with just a few links.
URL Structure
Within your URL it’s smart to include the main keyword, especially if it’s only a couple words in length. If it’s exceptionally long, then you might opt for a semantic variation.
Image Alt Tags
When you include a picture on your website, you should always take the time to write a detailed alt tag. This tag will appear for users who can’t load the image and also for blind users who use a text-to-speech program to read the page to them.
Presuming that you are using relevant images you can often include one of your keywords in the image alt tag, but it shouldn’t be the whole tag, it should fit naturally into the sentence.
Meta Description
In this day and age, Google treats your meta description as optional, often choosing to replace it with a part of your content that it thinks is better suited to the SERP’s. However, it can increase your CTR which means more traffic and also positive user signals which can have an impact on your rankings.
Modern Factors
Those traditional factors represent around 30% of the journey, more than enough for you to overtake your uneducated competition, but perhaps not enough for the most competitive keywords. For those, you will need to optimize for new on-page factors that can improve your rankings without risk of being penalized.
Grade Level Reading Score
It’s incredibly likely that Google is using Grade Level Reading Score to decide which results they return for different queries. Grade Level Reading Score is a complex system that attempts to interpret an article and the words that are used, giving a school grade which represents the level of writing in the article.
It makes complete sense if a young child searches for a page about dinosaurs they likely need a result that uses simple language. On the other hand, Google needs to be able to interpret queries and serve more complex pages for searches that are likely performed by adults interested in the science of dinosaurs.
Algorithms like the Flesch Kincaide Reading Ease score and the Grade Level score allow website owners to analyze their pages and see what level of language they are using.
To optimize your pages for this, you should interpret the keywords that you are trying to rank for and also analyze the top 10 results in the SERP. Both will allow you to figure out what level of writing is best for your readers so that you can adjust your writing style to improve your rankings.
Latent Semantic Analysis/Indexing
LSI is the reason why keyword stuffing is redundant, rather than dealing with individual words it looks at the topic of the content and uses a sophisticated algorithm to find relationships between words and topics. This is what allows Google to rank pages for keywords that are never even included on the page or in any off-page signals.
Rather than trying to optimize for LSI keywords, focus on writing the best content that you can, covering a broad topic and giving readers as much information as possible.
Term Frequency – Inverse Document Frequency
tf*IDF is a measure of how important a phrase is to the entire piece of content, computed by a sophisticated algorithm that looks at the frequency of phrases within a document, along with other factors.
The tf*IDF value increases in proportion to the number of times a word is used, but this increase is offset by the frequency of the word. This helps to disregard words like ‘he’ and ‘it’while recognizing the importance of words that are used in larger quantities than usual but not frequently.
Essentially, tf*IDF is a complicated method for calculating a value similar to keyword density which Google can use to influence their rankings of pages for specific keywords.
Supplementary Content
In recent years Google has hired more humans to rate pages, giving them more data about the quality of a page. This data allows them to interpret a page and figure out whether a human would like it, without ever having to show a person first.
This essentially means that you need to create a good experience for readers, i.e., easy to read content, less intrusive ads, visible contact and address details, links to other pages and websites.
Page Speed Time
With the majority of searches performed on mobile, your pages can’t be bloated. They need to load fast, and because fast is subjective, it’s increasing each year as the internet gets faster.
Ten years ago, a page that loaded in three-seconds was fast, but now that’s practically a requirement for having a usable website. You don’t need to push the limits of page speed, but most sites should ensure that they load in around 1-second or less.
Length of Content
Research has shown that rankings are highly correlated with the length of a piece of content. As with page speed, the ‘right length’ is subjective but it appears to be increasing each year. In the past, a 500-word piece of content was substantial, but now you might need 2,000-words just to break the first page.
Other studies have shown that users link to and share longer content more than they do shorter pages. Secondly, pages which are filled with information are more likely to have positive user signals because the time on page will increase and the bounce rate will likely be lower because you are keeping readers engaged.
Enhanced Content Types
Research shows that there is a correlation between pages that have images and rankings. This should be self-explanatory, people don’t enjoy reading vast chunks of text, they would rather have pages that use pictures, videos, lists, quizzes, resources, infographics and table of contents.

Thus, even though it unconfirmed, many fans are convinced that the pop star has had a rhinoplastic procedure—possible more than one—done in the past years.

2nd Sept 2017, 2:30 PM
And our self-drive cost sharing trip begins. Late by half hour but as we had no plan of any photography break on way or at Junagadh so there was nothing to worry. But the road was worst this time due to monsoon rain.
8:00 PM, we reached our resort at Sasan where mouthwatering pure kathiyawadi dinner was ready. After having dinner just came to know that mineral water was not available at that time due to off-season and few members can’t manage without them.
So went to Sasan (some 10Kms) and then mother nature welcomes us with first bird of trip checklist, it was spotted owlet sitting on a road direction board. Back to resort & time to go for sleep.
3rd Sept 2017, 5AM
2 Alarms and we got up on time :). But were late as per our plan to be the first to enter from check-post. Left resort and after a short tea brake near safari reception at sasan, we again started for Devalia Park.
As we were a bit late to be the first to enter the check-post, there was no chance of any sort of wildlife on the way.
Started the journey of beautiful Devaliya route (single track) with beautiful morning atmosphere and green forest around. And the first break to car for Indian Peafowl & Wild Boar.

Reach Devalia Safari Park and the first thing to do is book our seats in bus & now time to wait and enjoy some birds like India Peafowl, myna, jungle crow and few Monkey. While 2 friends joined booking queue, all others were searching for birds.

And witnessed our Lucky Charm “Indian Mongoose” again (Note: it’s said that seeing Mongoose is a good luck). Had missed a good photo of it during the last trip as that was just a moment of sighting and had to satisfy with a bit blurry image due to low light and moving car.
It was already 8:30 AM and we were eager to enter the park. But officials asked to wait few more minutes to get the bus full as there was very less rush and else others would have to wait for next bus to get full.

And in few minutes our trip of Asiatic Lion Trip begins. First to see were knob-billed duck, grey francolin, black francolin, scally breasted munia and then comes two queens of Jungle. Time to click-click-click.

It was a satisfactory trip for everyone. But for us, this was second year of such trip and so we were not that much satisfied by morning opportunity.
We felt the quality work what we expected from trip was not achieved. Anyways, it was closing time of park and have to return back to resort.
On-way we planned to have our desi breakfast of gathiya and chai. But then the resort owner called us and told to have breakfast over there. It was 11:30 AM already and lunch was almost ready, so we had few light snacks along with tea. And asked the resort owners wife (who cook herself) that we will have lunch after an hour and started the refreshing session after the morning workout.
Yes, the swimming pool session. (available at mostly all resorts at Sasan-Gir). Though it was more as a big water tank and less as swimming pool, still all enjoyed it.
Got totally refreshed and now it’s time for lunch. Kathiyawadi rotli, lasaniya bateta nu shaak, salad and gur-keri achar, chas, papad; one of the best lunch we had till date.

During that time too mother nature kept showing her presence, a pair of Common Iora and a monitor lizard came and gave some good clicks. Though few friend witnessed one more monitor lizard during the return journey to resort.
Now it’s time to check-out and reach Devalia Park again for the last session, but we planned to review our morning images first to check for mistakes and avoid the same during evening session. While review session was going and all were busy reviewing their images and improvements few of us including me got the time for sweet 10 minutes sleep 🙂
After review session, all participants insisted that we want to go back only if there is any chance of seeing male lion, but as discussed with officers at morning there was no chance for their sighting at the park. So it was time to cancel the evening session because all have got satisfactory images at morning itself.
But how can we ignore the nature and our lucky morning charm because still satisfactory work was not done as per me, so finalized to give evening session a test to our luck and went again.
And there was a heavy rush of tourist now, same like we had last year. Got the chance to visit in the last bus, but it was a favoring opportunity for us due to the soft light which we will get.
Entered again and now this time its 3 lioness and a lot better light and location for quality images. So felt it was a fair decision and evening trip made the day worth with beautiful images.

Let's start calling the Russian 'troll' attack what it really is

It's Troll Week on Mashable. Join us as we explore the good, the bad, and the ugly of internet trolling.
Fellow citizens of the internet, it's time to face facts: We are at war.
An authoritarian nation state invaded our beloved platform with a shady shape-shifting army of paid writers, and did its best to populate it with highly divisive, truth-obscuring garbage. Now other authoritarian nation states are attempting to do the same.
And because not enough of us are truly aware of this fact — hey, who can blame us, it's really bizarre! — we are losing the war. We aren't even using the right terminology to describe the problem, so how can we ever hope to fight back?
Here's the issue in a nutshell: We seem to have collectively decided to call members of this shape-shifting army "trolls." That's exactly how they want us to think of them. The internet knows trolls: They annoy, they harass, they attack targets in swarms. They've always been with us, and always will be.
What trolls don't do is systematically assume hundreds of fake identities or work toward a geopolitical goal on behalf of a foreign adversary. It would be more accurate to call these invaders undercover intelligence operatives. Or in a word, spies.
Cold War Redux
Because the nation state that started all this is Russia, we carry a set of historical assumptions that work against a clear-eyed assessment of the situation. We remember the Joseph McCarthy-led "Red Scare" of the 1950s as a shameful moment in American history, and rightly so. The bullying and blacklisting should never be forgotten.
We also hear "Russian spies" and our minds go to James Bond, you know, campy undercover agents in tuxes and slinky dresses. Didn't we leave that all behind in the 1980s?
Well, yes, we did. And then in 2000, a former East Berlin KGB agent named Vladimir Putin won a presidential election after a series of so-called terrorist bombings, about which intelligence experts remain dubious. Putin then made common cause with Russia's oil-rich oligarchs — and thus began nearly two decades of murders, or assassination attempts, on opposition leaders and investigative journalists.
The internet-based information warfare can be traced back to 2013. That's when the St. Petersburg Times first alerted the world to an entity in that city calling itself the Internet Research Agency, which was paying employees to flood the comments sections of stories about opposition leaders and Russia's rollback of rights for LGBT citizens.
The IRA operatives "react to certain news with torrents of mud and abuse," an activist named Vladimir Volokhonsky told the St. Petersburg Times. "This makes it meaningless for a reasonable person to comment on anything there."
IRA activity ramped up in 2014, and crossed to U.S. shores for the first time that year — where it made its first foray into fake news. This just so happened to coincide with the 2014 midterm elections for Congress.
Via YouTube videos, tweets, and phone texts, the IRA convinced much of a Louisiana town that there had been an explosion in a nearby chemical factory. Seeing similar media three months later during the Ebola panic, Georgia voters believed that the flesh-eating virus had arrived in Atlanta. On the same day, a different fake video told of a black woman being gunned down by police.
The IRA found every fresh wound in American society, stuck its finger in, and tugged. Via a fake account called Blacktivist, it encouraged a demonstration at the Confederate monument at Stone Mountain, Georgia. It created a Facebook group of "2nd Amendment patriots" and one called "LGBT United;" their Facebook ads received millions of impressions. The IRA designed hundreds of Twitter accounts to look like heartland newspapers, such as @KansasDailyNews, @JacksonCityPost, @MilwaukeeVoice and @StLouisOnline.
To the IRA, the politics of these accounts didn't matter. All that mattered was the potential for havoc.

In 2015, the IRA faked a video of a U.S. soldier shooting a Qu'ran, likely hoping to cause an uproar in the Muslim world. It didn't even seem to matter that the video was disprovable when you looked closely — the soldier's helmet was something you could buy online for $25, not Army issue. By the time viewers disproved it, the shape-shifting army of info-spies had moved on to its next issue.
If you haven't heard of any of these greatest hits, it's because they have been drowned out by the controversy over the IRA's involvement in the 2016 presidential election. But the facts of each case are surprisingly clear.
Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating Russia's role in the 2016 election, is famously silent on most things. But he has told us exactly what the IRA did next, in a damningly methodical indictment that named 12 major players — his first and only Russia-related charges to date.
(Separately, on Friday, the Justice Department indicted another IRA figure on information warfare charges related to the 2018 midterm elections — showing clearly that the threat is not over yet.)
Trolls provide cover
While those first IRA forays were happening in the U.S., a parallel development was unwittingly helping to provide cover. Swarms of actual trolls (read: people, mostly men, with a grudge and too much time on their hands) emerged from sites such as 4Chan and Reddit.
Spurred on by rising alt-right figures such as Milo Yiannopolous and Mike Cernovich, who were reportedly working to a playbook called Trust Me I'm Lying, these troll swarms saw diversity and feminism as the enemy. They brought us concentrated harassment campaigns such as GamerGate, ComicsGate, and the backlash against the all-female Ghostbusters reboot.
The scale of the trolling was unprecedented, and it took some time for the internet to fully figure out what was going on. As the various hate-gates are studied and reassessed, there is a legitimate argument for defining their collective trolling as what Wired recently called "domestic information terrorism."
But the Internet Research Agency activity is a different order of magnitude. We're talking international information terrorism: tens of thousands of accounts operated by paid individuals on every major web platform, each one given a quota of a hundred posts a day. We're talking hundreds of millions of users who saw these posts, thinking they were genuine.
The full scale of the attack is still emerging, and the numbers keep going up. Last week alone, Twitter released a dataset with 10 million tweets and 2 million images from Russian-linked accounts going back to 2009. "It is clear that information operations and coordinated inauthentic behavior will not cease," the company wrote.
With an oligarch-funded budget of $1.25 million per month on one influence project alone, the thousand-strong IRA aimed "to conduct what it called 'information warfare against the United States of America' through fictitious U.S. personas on social media platforms and other Internet-based media," the Mueller indictment says.
Enter the Jedi
Another reason to call this a spy campaign is the way that those fictitious personas tried to blend in. Last month, a study of a thousand Twitter accounts that attacked Star Wars director Rian Johnson concluded that 16 of them were IRA members.
In January and February 2018, the accounts latched on to an early wave of criticism of Johnson's movie The Last Jedi, then ceded the stage to disgruntled fans.
Those who noted that it was a small number of accounts, or claimed this was a way to smear everyone who disliked The Last Jedi as Russian operatives, missed the point. Which is that the shape-shifting army did not miss a single opportunity to jump into any debate that divided American society, even a debate about a movie.
"They're method acting," says Morton Bay, the Ph.D behind the Last Jedi study, who has been tracking what he calls "Russian influence operatives" since 2015. "If the Grammys are on, these accounts will be commenting on it to give themselves a sense of legitimacy ... they latch on to every cultural division, however small."
Such tactics, Bay concluded, were similar to those used by the infamous spy service where Putin cut his teeth. "Their methods are very close to what the KGB was doing during the Cold War," Bay says. "The only difference is the KGB was pushing a specific ideology, and these guys aren't."
Instead of ideology, the IRA aimed to spread fear, uncertainty, and doubt. It consistently aimed to flood the zone with shit, to echo the infamous words of Steve Bannon. Fill the comments section of honest stories and harass their writers, and soon there'll be fewer honest stories. The same holds true for social media as a whole. They want to exhaust us to death.
In a recent study, Hungarian security researcher Anatoly Reshetnikov described this process as "neutrollization" — or "creating conditions where political mobilization becomes absurd, so any risk to the regime is neutralized."
One of the few employees interviewed since leaving the IRA directly compared himself with Winston Smith in Nineteen Eighty-Four. Working there felt like "you were in some kind of factory that turned lying, telling untruths, into an industrial assembly line."
Doesn't sound an awful lot like trolling, does it? Sounds like something worse.
Sounds like information war.
The internet strikes back
Understandably, there is reluctance in the U.S. to describe any of these activities as acts of war. For one thing, many of us are employing a Cold War perspective: Don't antagonize the Russians! They're armed to the teeth! Do we really want to return to those dark decades of superpower conflict?
To answer that question, we have to change our definition of what conflict actually is. And here we're dealing with another 20th century mindset: Aren't wars fought over physical territory? Aren't they won with tanks and bombs?
Not since 9/11, no. As America learned painfully in Iraq, nation states are won and lost in the hearts and minds of the people. These days, the only wars that matter are in those minds, on the plain of ideas. Propaganda's younger, hipper cousin, information terrorism, is now the most important weapon of war on the planet.

We saw that clearly in the past week, as the kingdom of Saudi Arabia fought a desperate rear-guard action against reports that it had killed Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in its Turkish consulate. Twitter had to step in again to shut down bots that were flooding the online discussion with pro-Saudi hashtags.
But it isn't just Russia and Saudi Arabia. Syria, Iran, China, North Korea: Everyone's getting into the info-war game.
Of course, we shouldn't use the word "war" lightly. And thanks to conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, the phrase "info war" is tainted — but we also shouldn't shrink from using it. Allowing a state of war to exist in the shadows is exactly how Putin approached his invasion of Ukraine in 2014.
The eastern half of the country came under assault from "little green men" — Russian special forces that Russia denied belonged to them. The last thing he wanted was global economic sanctions, so that's exactly what we gave him.
In the case of the IRA, no one is suggesting we ramp up tensions or rattle any nuclear sabers. This isn't a matter for the Pentagon. If this information war is being fought on the internet, then the internet is where we must fight back. If the object is to wear us down with lies, then we must not be worn down. If truth is under attack, then the truth is what we must protect.
That means calling out bullshit whenever you see it, even if you see it all the time. It means maintaining skepticism about no-name news sources and oddly-named social media accounts. It means staying in touch with that crazy Trump-loving uncle who forwards the conspiracy theory emails; it means repeatedly speaking calmly and clearly about a Russian influence operation that is both ridiculous and demonstrably true.
And it means that we stop using a cutesy word like "trolling" to describe a massive, coordinated, ongoing military-style affair. "Don't feed the trolls" is a piece of advice as old as the internet; to that truism we should add, "Don't confuse the spies with trolls."
