BOOKS I READ IN 2020 → The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
“What she needs are stories. Stories are a way to preserve one's self. To be remembered. And to forget. Stories come in so many forms: in charcoal, and in song, in paintings, poems, films. And books. Books, she has found, are a way to live a thousand lives—or to find strength in a very long one.”

The Lucky Ones by Liz Lawson is a story about surviving grief and loss. It’s been almost a year since May McGintee’s twin brother, Jordan, was killed in a school shooting. May has been lashing out at everyone close to her, everything makes her angry. Now that May is finally returning to school, she’s never felt more alone. All of Zach Teller’s classmates have made life very difficult, since his mom is the attorney for the shooter. Everyday is a struggle for May and Zach so when they meet each other they try to hide who they really are. The unlikely friendship of these two outcasts brings hope back to their lives. I loved this book, though it is definitely gut-wrenchingly sad in places. The author did a fantastic job of making all the characters realistic and relatable – all dealing with grief in their own ways. The Lucky Ones is perfect for fans of Sadie by Courtney Summers. Your #readin2020 is, as always, a great source of suggestions and I’ve been eyeing many books you read lately (how to take smart notes / make it stick / hex / skincare), so I Need To Know: what did you think of them? ++ late congratulations for handing in the franken-thesis!
(I’m answering this publicly rather than privately as I have another question in my inbox asking if I would recommend Hex, so I thought the answer here might be interesting to others…)
HTTSN: very much one of those ‘ohmygod why didn’t I read this years ago’ books. A definite must read if you’re doing any kind of research/are at university and taking it seriously, and a likely regular re-read to fully take it all in. Lives up to the hype it receives in academic/research circles.
Make It Stick: if you’ve had even a cursory glance at the literature of how we learn you won’t be surprised by the big messages here (active recall/retrieval, spaced repetition, interleaving, etc.). But it’s really well written, with clear explanations and justifications of the conclusions, and it’s nice to have all of the literature cited in one place in a readable format. There are also chapters at the end for how to practically apply all of the evidence on how to learn best in several different situations (if you’re a student, a teacher, an adult learner, and so on).
Hex: best fiction read of the year by a far, and probably in my top 10 fiction reads of all time. I’m obsessed with it. It’s like My Year of Rest and Relaxation meets The Secret History. It is unhinged. In places it is ridiculous. I love it.
Skincare: there is nothing in this book that you can’t get for free on her blog or that she hasn’t talked about on some form of social media. However, the blog is so all over the place and I’m sometimes in the situation of ‘I know she’s said something about x somewhere’ but I can’t remember on which platform, and the book solves those problems by putting it all in one place. While I didn’t learn anything new or change my routine/products as a result of reading it, I love having a hefty reference book for skincare. I know I’ll come back to it as my skin changes throughout my lifetime, and have already referred to it when friends and family have asked for skincare advice.
And thank you! I still can’t believe not only is the Frankenthesis all over, but the MSc is all over, transcripts are out, time to mentally move on. How quick the 12 months passed...

Books I Read in 2020
Books I Read in 2020. It was a strange year and I only finished 20, but here they are! #bookreviews #2020 #amreading #readinglist #readin2020 #authorlife #readerlife
2020 was a strange year. It was extremely busy for me while it was not so busy for others. That means while a lot of people had downtime to read as much as they wanted, I was rushed and frazzled trying to squeeze in my reading where I could. I was only able to read 20 books in 2020 and here they are! And here are a few of my favorites by genre: Best Fantasy: The Lost Queen by Signe Pike Best…

I received an advanced reader copy of Pretty Little Wife from HarperCollins Publishers via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. Pretty Little Wife by Darby Kane is a story about deceit and righting wrongs. Lila Ridgefield’s husband, Aaron, a beloved high school teacher is missing. Lila knows where she left the body, but it’s no longer there. As the police investigate, they’ll have a hard time finding people that don’t love Aaron and an even harder time finding people that like Lila. As the secrets in Lila’s marriage are exposed, she will have to stay one step ahead of the investigation until Aaron is found. This was an excellent cat and mouse story filled with intrigue and characters with their own agendas. Pretty Little Wife is available today, December 29, 2020.
