It's already time for me to make this post again.

Another year, another BLEACH anime cour and an Anime Celebration event. From the fights to the added to content, this cour was INCREDIBLE! We got to see more of Momo and Shinji, Renji vs Uryu round 2, more bankais coming to life, and Grimmjow's return! I'll definitely be hosting an Anime Celebration event next year and will start planning once the final cour's release date is announced.

With that in mind, thank you to everyone who contributed to the events I hosted this year, whether it was the Anime Celebration or the Two Weeks of Hitsuhina, your participation makes events like those possible!

In terms of writing, this was the year of the poll! Thank you again to everyone who voted in them and helped me decide what fanfic ideas I should bring to life. Thank you also to everyone who liked, commented, ro reblogged my fics, your support means so so so much to me! I'm sorry I don't always respond to comments and reblogs, but please know I have read them and they fuel me to keep writing.

On that note, I want to apologize for the delays with chapters for An Unwavering Light. The fic has proven to be hard to write, in terms of dedicating time to write it but also, as possibly silly as it sounds, with how emotional it can get. It will get easier once I finish writing the scenes of Hinamori in Twelfth Division and Hitsugaya begins his journey to get stronger. I will definitely be working on An Unwavering Light throughout the new year, with my goal being to finish the whole story before June (ambitious, I know, but I don't want to keep everyone waiting).

I have been thinking about it for long, but...

What if I tried... Drawing original Mayuri make up and helmet styles?

I am shitty at drawing hair in any form, but I can totally get better at drawing him with his helmets on! Also I want to see how many make up styles I can create for him before I get bored.

When it comes to physical appearance, I have always found Mayuri to be the most, idk if it is correct to say it, artistically appealing. He is weird and channels that weirdness perfectly at the same time through the way he acts and dresses and I have been obsessing so much over him that I should really do something about it.

Also I have recently read a one-shot fic about Akon and the way he met Mayuri and Urahara in the Maggot's nest. Needless to say the characterization of everyone in it is On. Point.

So I will share its name here for people to check out. Most people may already know it unless they are new fans because the author is, from what I understand, known in the fandom's circles, but that may simply be my impression. Idk if it is bad Tumblr etiquette or AO3 etiquette because I have never done this or interacted with a fandom to this extent so this is literally me "coming out of my shell".

The fic is "looking at the world from the bottom of a well" by @recurring-polynya. I do not know why Tumblr is not highlighting the user's name but it's OK.

This fic is the reason I am obsessing on Mayuri and his shenanigans. Again.

five comfort characters, five tags

Thank you for the tag, @fractoluminescence! I made a new post because this got long, but the original meme is at this link, and @fractoluminescence's cool responses are at this one, if you'd like to read everyone's (I recommend!).

I had a difficult time developing an answer because I got too in the weeds about what the definition of “comfort character” was, rip. It turns out there are a lot of definitions, ranging from characters you find cozy, to characters you find relatable, to characters you look up to, to more elaborate definitions that attempt to articulate those distinctions between a character you love and a character that you would sink to the bottom of the Marianas Trench with.

I’ll define “comfort character” as that thing that begins by delineating, say, a show you love so so much (Haikyuu!!—my soul for a volleyball) vs. a show you want to be fannish about (Bleach. BleachBleachBleach, even. BLEACHBLEACHBLEACH, even), and then refines further into characters you love (my eternal Soi Fon era) vs. the characters you’re in the Trench about. Because while I probably think an above average amount about Soi Fon, and love seeing her on my dash, and do want to write for her once I alight upon some idea that sufficiently connects my headcanons about her to 1) actual canon and 2) a Story, she is not who I:

think about every single ding dong day;

regularly revel in in daydreams;

both consciously and unconsciously filter my lived experiences or relationships through, such that they become doubled; they find translation, in an act of both processing (growing distance from, or increasing intimacy with) the experience and in tugging at the character themselves, growing them into something that proceeds from their canon or offers an opportunity to entertain new and additional dimensions.

I think the key elements here are:

the alwaysness of this—the readiness to be in the soup at all times;

how personal the engagements are, which I think is sometimes to do with the relatability of a character (proximity to oneself) and is sometimes personal to… the character? Like, the intimacy of wanting to both crystallize one’s understanding of a beloved character by stress-testing their concept, and to spin them out, break them from what is canonically known just to see how much depth they have beyond that and in how many ways they might be known.

…Which, now that I’ve written that, is... just my definition of “blorbo” and not “comfort character,” but maybe the terms are synonymous??? who knows—AS THOUGH BLORBO HAS A DEFINITION AND ISN’T WHOLLY MEME-DERIVED TO BEGIN WITH. AS THOUGH ANY OF THESE THINGS HAVE PRESCRIPTIVE DEFINITIONS.

Anyway, all of that is the appeal of writing fanfic, to me, so it technically extends to anyone I’ve had occasion to write. But that’s within the specific action of writing a story, or preparing to write a story, or thinking about writing a story.

If we’re talking “always” and unconsciously, readily, blorbo-ily, whether there’s a story or not, then #1-3 are and have been for the last four years:

Hitsugaya

Hinamori

Matsumoto

They are who I am most inclined to give things to, or translate things through, and am most interested in defining/destroying. <333

There are probably use-cases/concrete examples that should go here, in addition to the somewhat woowoo definition above, but part of me is shy, and another part is like, those are what the stories are, and another part is “those two parts are the same part...” and yet another is “those two parts are the exact opposite of each other..."

Below the cut because it's not Bleach-related enough: I promise I’m not trying to be evasive/coquettish on purpose, but I don’t think I can get myself to put my thoughts about my lifetime character for this on Tumblr, because according to me, organizationally, that’s not where they go. So I’ll skip him. I’m also one of those people where my idea of comfort is to lean into the negative and feel comforted by the experience of being joined in misery by others, rather than go the cozy route. In that usage my comfort “character” is Law and Order: SVU because it’s like 800 episodes of people having the worst day of their lives and/or people on absolutely depraved sprees, depending on which side of the story you focus on. But also that show is deeply unserious, pleasingly formulaic, and has infinite rewatchability. So let's say those are responses #4 and #5!!

What's the origin of your blog title? It's been my blog title for a while; it's from a Kesha song (hymn) that hit really hard when I was in the middle of unpacking and addressing all my religious trauma as a queer person raised in a high-control, purity culture "christian" religion back when it came out. I literally sobbed the first time I heard it.

OTP(s) + Shipname: At the moment, Tarquin/Ashur (Tashur? Viperquin? Who knows, not me!).

Fandoms I write for: Currently, it’s the Bleach fandom, but I’m eyeing the DMBJ fandom, just waiting for a spark of Heihua inspiration. I always seems to lean in to the old, nostalgic fandoms it seems.

Side notes: 1) Recently found my old high school FFN account, and wow there was some really niche stuff there. 2) What fic have I written that isn’t self-indulgent? 3) I see fanfiction as less of a genre and more of, I guess, a different mode of writing, since it’s more of a phenomenon in response to a strict copyright system that we have today, and also you can fit a ton of different genres into fanfiction 4) I don’t necessarily need tea or coffee, but I need a drink of some sort! 5) Ah yes, rarepair hell is real. 6) Professional writer as in maybe publishing some short stories in a nice SFF magazine some day, not sure I’d want to do it full time.
