There was this post I saw awhile back that asked what was the one thing you would get pretentious about since everyone has at least one. I didn’t reblog it at the time, but my god if I have to see any more bad faith or media illiterate surface level take about Chainsaw Man, I’m going to become the literacy devil

Something About Frieren: A Fulfilling Life?
Here's a thing: I've always felt Frieren shares a similar melancholic feel with Violet Evergarden, but with a unique twist. Both stories unfold slowly, mundane, and seemingly pointless. However, the two also share a core value that I like; A lot of room to breathe and contemplate. It invites us to savor the quiet moments. Frieren and Violet started off oblivious with emotions that normally other people would grieve or regret. They learned to understand something that is no longer (or supposedly no longer, in Violet's case) attainable. Violet Evergarden was a tearjerker for me, whereas Frieren so far is more of a heartwarming journey.
Tumblr media
At a glance, it feels pointless to aim for something that you can never get back. There is no thrill from the rush of desire or a hit of comeback. Alas, this type of story was trying to convey something else; The melancholy of acceptance, a treasured legacy, and attention to even the slightest change. The slow pace pinpointed those things in pieces of with character's current life. Frieren's world is tinged with melancholic beauty, a constant reminder of the ones lost to time, and honors it by cherishing life's moments going forward.
Tumblr media
Now focusing on Frieren story, I really like how each character connected with their surroundings and how the relationship between them emerged. Even the supporting cast in Frieren are not mere bystanders. Each character interaction feels meaningful, adding depth and dimension to the story. They aren't merely a tool for the main character's development but really feel like a part of the main story.
Tumblr media
Now about the main character Frieren.. By herself, she may lack an admirable trait as she appears laid-back and unpassionate, which makes her a seemingly unconventional protagonist. We won't be able to understand her if not for the characters around her. Her strong suit I think was her will to understand and her value of humility. She was mainly driven by logic but didn't completely shut herself from emotional reasons.
I really like the part about her, even as the main character, when she failed to earn the 'first-class mage' title like it was nothing to worry about. Instead, she helped her apprentice, Fern, to be one. It's quite rare to see a main character surpassed by the support character. I can think of some examples like Lightning McQueen and Naruto, each with their own reason. But the message is the same; Everyone has their own role in life and not every path they need to succeed. The student will surpass the teacher, and it was delivered in such a.. lenient, light-hearted way.
Tumblr media
Watching Frieren was almost stress-free, I started to look forward to how she'd handle a normally stressful situation with her lack-of-stress attitude, lmao. It can be frustrating when that happens in a relationship with the people around her, though. And that pros and cons are what make it interesting. Not looking stressed, or heck not looking excited, doesn't mean one didn't care. I can relate to that part of her to some degree, and that's also the reason why I like her.
It's funny to recall back the first time I heard about Frieren, was when a friend watching the episode where Frieren's group first met Lügner I was like yoo what are you watching and YOOO who is that Johan-looking guy 😳😳. He was the reason I watched Frieren... Damn... RIP Lügner 😞💔.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, I still enjoy the story so far and I think anyone seeking a thoughtful and emotionally resonant story will find themselves captivated by Frieren's journey. The key to a fulfilling life.. highlighted in everyday moments.. and to raise a glass for the lingering memories from remnants of those who once walked with us. Cheers, and keep walking forward.

Oh right, and with a hobby, of course!

media thread 2025, part May
Tumblr media
4th May: Sinners
so originally, i had no real intentions of going to watch Sinners
not because i thought it was a bad movie- i pretty much believed the hype, because if there's that much hype, there's generally something worthwhile going on, but i just- didn't care. i'm too allergic to live action. i simply do not see it
but then someone i follow started posting about it, and i was like. well. perhaps. and god damn am i glad i went to see it, because holy shit, what a movie
like the hype? absolutely deserved. everything just works here, and it works well- i can not think of a single weak point here, not a single second wasted. it's great. like, genuinely- absolutely fantastic movie
and it's a movie that has something to say- i'm not the person to pick that stuff apart, but there's so much in this movie, so many layers, so much to turn over and study. i'm not quite sure how i feel about a sequel, which is already in development, but if it's anything like this first one... yeah, that'll be a must watch
loved all the characters here, too- i think my favourites was by far the twins, the tragedy and codependency of their relationship, the way we get just enough information for it to hit, and hit hard. and then Sammie, of course- Sammie my most beautiful beloved baby boy, who so perfectly fills the role of the heart of the movie. and the women, too! this movie does right by its female characters, and i loved every single one of them
also, Remmick. what a wonderful twist on the vampire villain- just a completely pathetic silly little man, who hides such tasty teeth beneath it. i loved, like loved, his music scene- loved all of them- this movie just has such fantastic scenes, such fantastic moments, it's genuinely one of the best i've ever seen
it's good!
Tumblr media
13th May: Conclave
i've been eyeing up Conclave for a little bit, because tumblr sure have a whole Thing with it, and then bam, pope down, and the cinemas was like, oh shit, rerun? and so i watched this in the cinema, and yeah, it's really good
it's one of those movies that's a bit of a work of art- really excellent cinematography, like some absolutely beautiful shots. loved the way it touched on both the traditions of the religion and then the mundanity of real life- that one shot with the cardinals all crowded together, smoking, or the one on his phone... absolute cinema. worth watching solely for those
of course, this is also just a really good movie. very fascinating watching everything unfold, the whole- political thriller of it all. really loved just watching these old men do old religion at each other- it really is just fascinating watching the old history of it all. i do think it's kind of funny how tumblr seems to have, primarily, taken 'old man yaoi' from it, but such is tumblr... i would be lying if i said i didn't see it, but it sure wasn't my first thought
also man, that ending... like, genuinely, this movie is something beautiful. and! it somehow managed to be about politics and not have any slow points! amazing
Tumblr media
16th May: The Legend of Ochi
NOW THIS... is a weird fucking movie
i'll be entirely upfront, and say i really liked it- but there's a lot of people who did not, and i'll be upfront about that too- i can see why
it's a weird movie! i've seen some people compare it to 80s fantasy, and while i've never actually seem any of those (unless you count Ronja Røverdatter, which... maybe, probably) i definitely agree with that take- there's something very distinctly old about this movie. it's very much its own thing, a bit all over the place, tone-wise, and it's just- it's really creatively weird? and i loved it?
the creatures- the Ochi- are all puppets, and it's just so cool, watching them in action. and then there's the scenery, which is just- ough. exactly my vibe. loved every single scenery shot, like i could not have enough of those. and i loved how weird everyone was! this movie isn't afraid to be silly, and i burst out laughing more than once, because of this sudden twist to humour
i just! really liked watching this one! it was fun!! and i liked how genuinely full of creativity and love this one was, like it's one of those that feel like an artist made it, and i just had such a blast with it, even if my mom (who i watched it with) was not capable of taking it seriously, at all
Tumblr media
18th May: Crow Country
i'm finding myself kind of at a loss for words when it comes to Crow Country, not because it's bad- it's very much not!- but just because i feel like everyone is already aware of what a good game it is?
it perfectly nails its atmosphere and tone, has the most lovely FF7-esque lowpoly graphics, and has a very interesting, and concise, story. i did find the combat a little annoying, at times, but it's not bad- it's exactly what it needs to be, this slow stumbling thing to add to the atmosphere, and i like it, even if it occasionally annoyed me
and, like. what else can i say? it's a good game?? anyone who likes survival horror should play it, and that's that?? end of commentary???
Tumblr media
24th May: Fearbonding
i'm kind of torn on Fearbonding, to be honest. i really like the game, enjoyed playing it, but it feels... bare bones
the set up of a demon (who feeds on fear) trying to tame a yandere is fascinating. absolutely obsessed with it. and the games does deliver on this set up- Hinata is a freak, Kosuke is a yandere, we're having a good time. but man, i just wish there was more
it feels like all the bones are there, but then we barely get any actual meat. we skim over a lot of the build up, and while it's still kind of there, there could have been so much more
i do like the game. but man, i just kind of wish it was more fleshed out

Hello there Tea Non! (can I call you that qq?) Sorry for the wait!! Jack’s part feels a bit too short and Sebek’s quite long,, ^^’’
Warnings: mild language! internalized homophobia (Epel’s part!) Tags: fluff, male!reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
➸ Ace is a little shit bastard, but he (along with Deuce) practically became best friends. You're one of the people he would tease to death and annoy with but also he would stand by your side no matter what.
➸ You banter a lot together. You'd fight, argue, and even tease each other which is considered "too mean" to other people.
➸ Though your arguing turns to flirting sometimes. You didn't even realize it, Ace didn't even realize it, but your friends did and they're placing bets if you two are actually into each other or not.
➸ How long did Ace figure out that this isn't just a normal bro-thing? Well, suddenly, seeing you scowl at him and swear at him is becoming more than amusing—it's becoming endearing. He likes the way you look at him or even gets hyped up in annoying you when you fire back with remarks.
➸ The fluttering feeling in his chest only grew when you two were play flirting. He grinned cheekily at you about maybe needing some company while doing library duty. You know what you said to him back?
➸ "Awe, Ace. Do you want to be alone with me that much?"
➸ His brain tried what just happened and why that he was so red right after that whole exchange. You two always flirted and bickered, right? Why does it feel kinda different now?? What??? Hnajgejegegaeg????
➸ Then you started to do intimately nice things to him—like that one time you had to tend to his hand after burning himself during potions class—then oh, oh. Fuck. Oh fuck. He has a crush on you. Does that surprise him? To have a crush on a guy? Not particularly, because this isn't the first time it happened.
➸ Before Ace met his ex-girlfriend, he already experienced what it's like to have a crush on a guy. He didn't understand why or why that feeling is the same feeling he has for a girl.
➸ His brother found out first then he came out to his mom. She did call it a phase but in a way that she was supportive of him questioning his sexuality. His mom assured him that she wouldn't love him less if he's bisexual.
➸ Ace just hopes this little crush of his doesn't develop. He doesn't want things to get awkward between the two of you! Just because he likes the way your cheeks reddens when he slings an arm around you and pinches your cheek, doesn't mean you can do the same to him...okay, maybe he'd like that a little bit
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
➸ Deuce is a smart student. He's loyal, reliable, and diligent. However, sometimes he just comes off as dense.
➸ He's comfortable with his sexuality. Whatever it is that is seen as too intimate for two bros to share is normal for him. After all, you're his best friend! Along with Ace and Grim. There's nothing weird about how he's treating you because he treats his friends the same way.
➸ Said friends watch his imaginary ears and tail wag when you praise him or compliment him. Okay, who's gonna tell him?
➸ It's like they were the ones who realize Deuce has a crush on you first than Deuce himself. They started placing bets on when he's going to realize it or if you'll be the one to find out and Deuce still hasn't realized what he's feeling is infatuation.
➸ It's rather cute, actually. Deuce is already cute but he became quite endearing when he smiles at you. How he's always making sure to see if you're comfortable, checking in on your wellbeing, and asking if you need help.
➸ He's a little protective of you, too. Granted he controls himself to not get into too many fights. He doesn't want you to get roped into the fights and get hurt. However, if some mob student even dares to mess with you when you aren't even doing anything, you got some backup. (Don't mess with the First Year Squad).
➸ Ace teases him about his little crush on you which leads to Deuce punching his arm all flustered. He's a little shit to Deuce about this too, always making kissy sounds when Deuce gets too cute around you.
➸ The funny thing is, Deuce doesn't even realize he's infatuated with you. Again, he thinks you just have a special place in his heart. You're his bro and he's willing to fight with you.
➸ He finally realized when he talked to his mom about you and she commented how glad she is that her son found someone he can be happy with. She reminded him to take his crush as a motivation in his studies, and Deuce nodded at her advice.
➸ Wait WHAT—
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
➸ Epel is by no means weak. This boy worked at a farm before he was in NRC. That pretty face doesn't mean a pretty heart (sometimes).
➸ Though the urge to pick him up out of nowhere is tempting. No one in the squad tried to do it to catch him off guard (Ace attempted to while Deuce stopped him, Sebek doesn't think it's necessary, and Jack only picked him up because they were working out together). Besides, he isn't some damsel to be hoisted out of nowhere! He doesn't like it...or so he thought when you picked him up by the torso to move him out of the way. Epel didn't see Grim running at full speed on the ground because his tail got bitten by a live crab. Your first instinct was to just grab and lift him—you didn't mean to startle him, really.
➸ Needless to say, Epel developed a new emotion. He doesn't know what to call it or if there's even a name for it. Is there a name for "brain shutting down for brief moments after being picked up with ease?"
➸ Does he like you? Does he actually have a crush on you?? He never had a crush on a guy before—he never had a crush on anyone. Does the fluttery feeling in his chest when you touch shoulders mean that he likes you?? ahufaeofaufea????!!
➸ He's just...lost. So lost about what he's feeling towards you. A lot of invasive and absurd thoughts flood his mind. Do you have a crush on him too? Will you like him? Would you find him weird? Who's gonna "wear the pants" in the relationship?? He doesn't want that! Liking a guy doesn't make him less manly, right? RIGHT??
➸ "Hey Epel are you—" | "I DON'T LIKE HIM." | "...dude I was just gonna ask if you're finished with your essay..."
➸ The squad (sans you) have to reassure Epel that his feelings for you are valid and that doesn't make him less manly than he already is (Jack and Deuce). Liking a guy is the same as liking anyone else (Sebek). Worrying about a certain role to play in a relationship between same-sexes is kinda homophobic (Ace).
➸ That assured him, atleast. He isn't familiar with liking a guy. Plus, with where he came from, it's definitely uncommon. However...there is one thing that Epel is familiar with.
➸ He definitely fantasized about meeting someone to grow old with. Someone who will love him back and share dreams with. No one knows about this of course—what are you talking about? He's not a sappy, romantic person. Not at all!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
➸ Jack would deny it 100%
➸ There is no way he has a crush on you! He can't do that to you—no way. He respects you enough to keep your relationship as just friends. If you're bros, you're bros.
➸ Yeah, that doesn't really work out well for him.
➸ It's easy to tell if Jack likes you or not because he's good at hiding his emotions through defensive remarks (plus his resting face is a scowl). The Kouhai Squad would look at his ears and tail wagging when you even smile at him or congratulate him for a job well done. He's like a puppy,,,
➸ Whenever the Squad would point this out he will deny it. There is no way in Twisted Wonderland that he has a crush on you! He doesn't! Those are...just instinctive bodily reactions!
➸ "You held hands, dude." | "So? That isn't weird." | "Your tail is wagging." | "NO IT ISN'T!!"
➸ It's not like he doesn't like you, he's just...embarrassed. It's like you know what makes him flustered and that makes his heart do a little tap dance. He (somehow) wants to do the same to you. Make you flustered, embarrassed, happy...it's only fair!
➸ He needs to get over this little crush of his...because you're starting to catch up on why he's acting weirdly. If he tells you how he feels about you, how would you take it? He doesn't want to ruin your relationship with each other...aghh why is this so hard?? Jack wishes working on his feelings is as easy as training in Magift...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
➸ Admiration and pride are something Sebek is familiar with, but infatuation is new.
➸ Admiring someone and having a crush on them are two similar but different things. When your bond with him develops he...starts to get a little confused.
➸ Has those feelings always been there? Are they different? He wasn't being this weird back then! A simple bump on the shoulders shouldn't spark so much electricity inside him to cause him to tense up!
➸ Sebek was good to hide these new reactions towards you...somewhat. He has to atleast act like everything is normal so he can evaluate what kind of feelings he has towards you. Which works and kinda doesn't since when you do something a little intimate (like a shoulder pat, a cheeky smile, or even praise) he gets a little red. Red. Nevermind Deuce and Jack are asking if he's okay while Grim judges from afar.
➸ He still doesn't understand why he feels so weird around you so he decided to ask someone who has experience—an adult if you will! A humble, wise, elder fae that surely has some explanation for the weird fluttery feeling in his stomach.
➸ "You are infatuated—or to put it simply, you have a crush on the Prefect," Lilia explained to him. Sebek needed a few moments for that information to sink in. He has a crush on you. Okay, that's the mundane mystery solved. What is he gonna do with that information? Carry on with your friendship knowing things might get awkward around the both of you?
➸ Luckily, Lilia gave him three questions to answer personally so he may evaluate his feelings for you. In that way, Sebek knows what the next steps to take without rushing in blindly. You consider him as your friend and he returns that sentiment! He wishes to respect you as you respect him.
➸ Are you a distraction? Oh, definitely! Ever since he started to harbor feelings for you, his thoughts often lead up to you. When the young master is talking about you, he finds himself listening in, not just because Malleus is talking, but because he wonders about what kind of human is friends with his young master. This caused him to write a few words related to you in the essay he was supposed to be writing! When he and Silver are sparring, Silver has the audacity to throw your name into his comment which caught him off guard. In other words: you are despicably distracting!
➸ Are you a motivation? Well...yes. Sebek is proud to be a knight for the young master and he continues to strive in his position. He knows there is still much to learn as a knight and he is willing to develop his skills more to become better. Somehow, you acknowledge his diligence and even commend him for it. Yet you look after him, saying that he needs someone to fight for him. He laughs at that incredulous thought. Sebek prefers he do that to you along with his friends, instead. All of the squad are an odd bunch, including you. Sebek...wants to protect you as well. Somehow, knowing that you are safe urges him to make sure that you'll remain safe.
➸ Are you an inspiration? Sebek ponders on that question. Somehow it is related to the second, but he thinks carefully about it. He noticed how most of the poetry he makes is because of you—he needs an outlet for his feelings, don't take it weirdly—and although the theme varies, the subject of interest is you.
➸ Now that he answered all three of those questions...shall he proceed with courting you? No, that's too fast. Lilia told him to enjoy his youth and don't dive into relationships quickly.
➸ However! He shall confess to you to rid of the constricting feeling in his chest! Sebek wants to talk to you normally again without any hidden feelings!

4 Reasons INFPs Are So Restless
We see the world for what it “should be,” and this makes it incredibly challenging to remain static in life.
Some say I have the attention span of a goldfish. On the one hand, I can absolutely see where they are coming from. I can be mid-conversation, and if I am not entirely focused on the interaction at hand, then I drift away quickly. However, I would argue that this is a representation of my restlessness as an INFP — one of the rarer Myers-Briggs personality types — rather than a short attention span.
It isn’t that I get distracted per se, but instead I lose interest and drift away into the beautiful world of my mind, where even the most mundane of life experiences can be transformed into a glorious story of good and evil, of love and loss — a tale of blockbuster credibility. In general, INFPs are incredibly self-aware, curious, and have a rich inner world.
To the outside world, the combination of those three traits may sometimes come off as restlessness (though we’re not the only Myers-Briggs personalities whose minds often wander). If you’ve ever wondered if you should try to curb your restless behavior, though, I would like to remind you that it adds a certain mystery and lure to life.
There are solid reasons INFPs get restless, and they speak to the magic that makes us the most idealistic personality type. Here are four reasons you may find yourself restless, and why you shouldn’t feel ashamed about it.
4 Reasons INFPs Get Restless
1. We are dreamers.
At our core, we are dreamers and idealists. We see the world for what it “should be,” and this makes it incredibly challenging to remain static in life.
On the one hand, this rose-colored lens instills an air of excitement and wonder that encourages us to move on and chase beauty whenever we come across it. But if we lose sight of that luster, no matter where we currently are in life, it is incredibly difficult to remain focused. Either way, both of these mentalities leave an eagerness to see more, do more, and feel more.
Regardless of the root cause (boredom with the present or excitement about the future), the result is the same: INFPs want to pack up and move on to the next great adventure. Not only is this normal, but it is a good thing for our development.
This fascination with all the things that should and could be has propelled me into some of the most trying times in my life, but it also has spurred an immense amount of growth and personal development. For example, after finishing my undergrad, my two best friends and I loaded into my truck and hit the road.
We had not much more than a rough map of where we sought to go, but embarked on a five-week journey across North America. None of us had the funds to pull it off, so we brought a tent, and found free camping along the way. From frigid nights in Telluride, CO, to the scorching sun of Moab, UT, we saw, did, and felt so much throughout our travels. Had it not been for my restless nature, I would never have embarked on such a journey.
So keep chasing those rainbows, INFP.
2. We despise conflict.
Another reason we may wrap up parts of life in a nice little box and move on is our tendency to mitigate conflict. I don’t want to say “avoid,” since that has a negative connotation, but many INFPs (myself included) really do try to avoid conflict.
What I mean is we often sense impending doom, and skip town before the situation gets to that point. INFPs have high levels of intuition and perception, meaning we can sense others’ emotions and know when conflict is brewing. As highly sensitive people, we would rather have a somber memory of what once was — a feeling of melancholy — than risk watching a relationship or situation crumble.
This conflict avoidance can be seen in a number of realms — workplaces, friendships, or romantic relationships — but the result is often the same. We will eventually find a reason to justify moving on, so we can weave the impending conflict into a grand story, rather than simply address it head on.
3. We prefer our lives to be highlight reels.
As idealists, life feels as though it is some grand story woven together with beautiful intricacy. The lows are gut-wrenching moments in a heartbreaking tale, and the highs are marks of victory and revelation. Because of this lens through which we view life, we have little patience for mundane activities. We have a bigger and better story to write, so we must move on to the next adventure.
For example, I often reflect on crossroads and the decisions I’ve made there. When looking back with 20/20 hindsight, it’s become clear to me that, more often than not, I follow the path that will give me a blockbuster movie. This is ultimately what led me to quit my engineering job to pursue starting my own company. I was only eight months into the job, but it seemed like the natural progression of the “story of Cole,” which made the decision to change career paths so appealing. I had no solid plan for making money, and was relying on my gut being correct. But what sold me was there was so much more learning to come from having no safety net and forging my own future.
INFPs feel the need to grow constantly, and throwing in the occasional plot twist is often the perfect way to do so. But these plot twists are often perceived as restlessness.
4. We need to understand ourselves better.
The central theme of the INFP story is that of self-discovery. One of my main driving factors in life is to understand myself and find my place in the larger picture of the world. Because of this, I often take a step back from my current situation to digest a number of things:
*First, I am checking in to evaluate what I’ve learned recently. By pausing life, this moment of reflection gives me clarity about myself.
*Second, I am generally looking to what could be next. How can I capture new experiences, push myself further, and understand myself better?
These two factors often create a feedback loop with one another, which further enhances the quality of restlessness. Since INFPs are continually on the search for true understanding, this lends to a whimsical — and sometimes restless — approach to life.
INFPs are naturally wired to possess an air of restlessness. Between the idealistic, rose-colored lens through which we view life, our hatred of conflict, and our deep-rooted need to truly understand ourselves, it may feel as if we are always on the move and ready for something new.
When You Feel Too Restless
However, you may be asking yourself, how restless is too restless? If you feel this way, I want you to keep these things in mind:
*When you feel the stirrings of a new adventure calling your name, sit on it for at least a few days. We often feel differently about ideas throughout various parts of the day, and setting a deliberation period can give you more clarity to pursue only the adventures that are best for you.
*It’s okay to remain static in life for a while, especially when there are external pressures that need to be met. To rekindle the joyous and idealistic nature of your INFP self, take to hobbies during these times. Pick up a guitar or grab a pen and paper. Channel your creative juices and live out your adventures in your head, just for now.
*Finally, don’t feel so bad about being “restless.” Sure, it may be irresponsible from time to time, but the adventurous nature of INFPs truly makes life beautiful and inspiring, both for yourself and others.
These tendencies lend to a beautiful outlook on life, but it is important to always remember to take time and smell the roses. If you wrestle with wondering whether you should dial back your INFP quirkiness, then remember this quote from T.S. Eliot: “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”

Note
Sorry if you’ve answered something like this before but, do you have any tips of writing slow burn, and just writing in general? Lol thank you and love your work!
No worries! I’m always down to talk about writing. Thank you for your kind words. :)
To write a slow burn, you will want to start with the main pairing as strangers, acquaintances, or even enemies. You could also start them as friends, but if you begin with the two having a close relationship already, it would be hard to draw that out because friends to lovers basically only adds kissing and physical intimacy, but if you start from the very beginning/first meeting you have more time to develop the relationship, which will take more words, and make the burn slower.
No matter what level of relationship you start the pairing at, there has to be a reason why they can’t be together yet because if you start with no obstacle, it will be hard to justify why they aren’t together. Obstacles could be the characters are in other relationships, one or both might have just gotten out of a bad/abusive relationship, they’re in a bad place mentally/physically, and distance or other characters are keeping them apart. This also gives you something to overcome not just in the relationship, but for the individual characters and their journey, and it adds depth to the plot. And the richer the plot, the more you can draw it out and slow down the burn!
To make the slow burn enjoyable instead of annoying or frustrating, try not to make overcoming the relationship obstacles or individual challenges “too easy” for the characters. They should have near misses and setbacks, or it won’t feel satisfying or intriguing when they finally get together, or oppositely, if it’s too hard and drawn out, and there’s one shitty event after the other, it will feel like okay!!! enough already!!! So try to space out good and bad events and keep it balanced. :)
Know when to time skip and when to accept that you just need to write an entire scene. Time skipping can rush character development and make the ending feel unearned, but writing every detail of the characters’ lives can get boring to read. When you need some exposition or world building and not just fun plot or explicit scenes try to use the seemingly mundane interactions to your advantage to further the plot, introduce characters, build character(s), build relationships, foreshadow, or make fun references to canon.
For an example of all of the above points, in my story Disorder, Tony and Peter have their first meeting, and what’s holding them back from being together is Peter’s age and his poor mental health and self-image. He has a lot of good moments and bad moments, and doesn’t just lose weight and gain confidence over night. I take Tony and Peter throughout a working relationship, then a friendship, and then the buildup of an intimate relationship, and when I’m not outlining every personal training session between the two, I’m building their relationships and friendships with other people and giving both of them a chance to interact in other spaces besides the gym. So Peter will be at school with Ned and MJ showing his sense of humour, interacting with Flash, and maybe mentioning the upcoming Decathlon ten chapters later, so that when I bring it up later, it doesn’t come out of nowhere. Then I might skip a week to the next lesson with Tony because if you’re reading a Starker story, obviously you want most of the interactions to be Tony/Peter. :)
Adding in more people than the main pairing makes for a well-rounded story because other characters exist and help make the main pairing who they are. (For Peter, I like Ned, MJ, May, Flash, and Mr. Delmar, and for Tony, I like Pepper, Rhodey, Happy, Jarvis, and Nebula. Bucky is just a necessity for every story, also. ;) ) Making the side characters funny or interesting, or inserting running jokes about them will make the parts with those people more enjoyable to read, even if the pairing isn’t featured.
Short chapter length or transitional chapters are necessary, but can be tedious because you don’t want to have an info dump, but you don’t want to go through the pain of writing an entire interaction and scene just for the sake of increasing word count, so accepting that not every chapter is going to be the Best Chapter is important. If you need to get information across about the backstory, or exposition, you can have it expressed through dialogue, or do a little bit of info dumping at a time and try to weave it into other things, so it’s not huge chunks of info that can be boring or confusing.
Add a little bit of your own personality to the writing too. I’m not really a poetic writer, and I prefer to write snappy dialogue and let character dynamics do the work, but some people can talk about the flowering trees and the winding roads of the countryside. I don’t know anything about that lol, so when I try to write it, I feel silly and then the scene suffers because I’m not saying anything I actually care about. So write the style that feels most natural to you and it won’t be boring because you’ll be able to feel your energy in the story, and writers are what bring a lot of the emotion to the fan fiction. Every reader likes something different, so write for your own tastes and the people who like your style will stick around.
There’s a time and place for surprises or complications, but the type that you put into the story should be consistent with the expectations you and the readers have—whether you’ve stated these by your tags or the plot summary. Example, a coffee shop AU doesn’t turn into a sex worker AU, or soft, domestic Tony doesn’t turn into a dark stalker. Those are valid occurrences, but they’re so different that it’s not a fun twist for readers…it’s legitimately not what they signed up for. A surprise in Disorder that works is when you find out Tony’s own personal struggles during his POV with Rhodey. It adds depth to his character and another layer to his dynamic with Peter, but it isn’t shocking or contrary to what I’ve already written.
For most of Disorder, Tony and Peter each don’t think the other would be interested, or if they were, “not right now” or “not because of the age difference” etc... and I kept having them almost connect/admit it, but then I’d hold back. Knowing when and how I wanted them to get together from the very beginning helped with the slow burn as well because I had to think of how to get them from point A to B. I knew I wanted Peter to be at good place mentally, but not perfect, and I wanted May to be more accepting of the relationship, so it became a game of filling in the blanks instead of just starting a story with no end in sight, and then it feels difficult to give it direction.
Creating outlines and templates for a story helps me. Like a table that outlines which characters are featured in a chapter, and any major plot points, and just general info. This way when you go to write future chapters or edit, you don’t have to reread everything, and when it’s all laid out in front of you, it can be easier to be like, “Oh, this just happened in Chapter 1, so I don’t want another crazy event to happen in Chapter 5 because I want the energy of the story to be evenly spaced.”
Edit not just for grammar but for subtle mistakes like repeating a lot of the same phrases and words. I tend to overuse “just” and start a lot of sentences with, “well”, so I have to be careful of that. Also for continuity like if Peter is sitting down in one paragraph, and then you say he sat down in the next paragraph even though he’s already sitting...
Decide how you want your story to be regarding realism, whether it’s in the context of an AU or a canon-compliant story. Maybe you don’t care about being realistic to our universe, and maybe you want to write something completely off the wall. There should be some sort of structure and consistency with the characters so that the reader feels stable and like they can trust where you’re going. Even if you want to write a master/slave AU where Tony keeps Peter on a leash, or something like a body swap, there’s still things that you can do to keep it realistic in the context of that story. Like if Tony was portrayed as a very loyal and possessive master, he’s not going to be sharing Peter with someone later in the story, unless you’ve decided that him getting over that is necessary to the plot, and sufficient character building shows him slowly becoming more open. Or in a body swap, if Peter and Tony switch, they’re not going to immediately go and put each other at risk or use their bodies to betray one another.
So I don’t know what you’re writing, but no matter what, try creating mystery by leaving things unsaid/undiscovered, or raising questions within the plot for readers to find out later. You don’t have to give up everything right away! (I know it’s hard not to spill the beans, but it lets people figure things out on their own or wonder if you’ll mention it again.) (Make sure you remember if you’re doing this so you don’t accidentally create a plot hole.) An example of this in Disorder is raising the topic of will Peter go to college, or not. Eventually he decides. Another is why Tony doesn’t like to give cards in his gifts, and then eventually he gives one to Peter, and it makes it really special. <3
I hope this helps!

CONGRATULATIONS, EMMA! YOU’VE BEEN ACCEPTED FOR THE ROLE OF MAMMON.
Admin Rosey: There is something about Mammon that draws people in - but I know that they can be a very fickle character down simply because they are so utterly unique unto themselves. I really enjoyed the application because of the way they were outlined so meticulously, providing the exact understanding of Mammon that I very much longed to see. There was a certain disdain that was interwoven into everything, from the plots to the prose to the dialogue. The apathy that seemed to be teeming on the surface of things was absolutely delicious to eat up.This application was a fun read and I simply cannot wait to see how you develop Mammon along the way! Please create and send in your account, review the information on our CHECKLIST, and follow everyone on the FOLLOW LIST. Welcome to the Holy Land!

IN CHARACTER
Character | MAMMON
What drew you to this character? |
There is something so raw about a demon birthed from nothing - they are the epitome of emptiness, their existence almost synonymous to a black hole which I find extremely fascinating. They are greed, they are consumption, they devour all, eating away at others in physical tangible methods. Perhaps it is their cruelty that is ultimately a big part of what fascinates me - untangling the web of what makes them tick is yet another facet. I’d love to explore their mind and uncover the inner workings of their feral being. Their gluttonous ways and conquest to swallow those around them whole is chaos at it’s finest. The danger that glints in their eyes and the attitude that exudes from them is everything I could ever desire in a character. They’re also really hot. I mean Noma Han though.
What future plots do you have in mind for the character? |
& I EAT UNTIL ALL IS CONSUMED | Mammon is a fickle creature who thrives in pandemonium. They tread a questionable line of self indulgent anarchy. Their arms are extended like the angels in mockery, writing their own fanatical laws that no one else could truly understand. Their madness thrives in their mind - their motivation always geared toward their own personal satisfaction. But what if the scale was to tip? Perhaps someone or something will catch the gleam in their darkened eyes. What if they too could live for more than the tool that was once wielded by others. Long accustomed to opulent luxury and gluttonous sin, never had they batted an eye at the politics swirling within courts. Yet for someone as hungry as they, was such mundaneness enough? What if they were to crawl past the line of humdrum satisfaction. What if they dove deeper into their instability - their appetite always growling for more. In a dog eat dog world, they had always been the one to voraciously guzzle first. Enjoying what existed was mediocrity and they were far more than that. With sharpened razor teeth, they know they can bite off more. Nothing would be too much to chew, for eating and taking was what they did best. Take and take until there was nothing left, ambition spirals to the damned heavens itself.
HOPE? WHAT A PECULIAR CURIOSITY |  Accustomed to eons past of old tales whispered in their name, there is something tedious of Mammon’s life. While they have long been accompanied by their gourmandizing, they too seek out a spark of new excitement. Their bones creak, their jaw snaps at the thought of a new conquest - a new game. Perhaps a pursuit that is unexpected by all others - especially of demon kind. They have seen much and heard much and curiosity is like temptation itself. They too wonder of things like hope - entertaining the concept. They do not understand it as they have long been an inhabitant of the same old Hell. Yet even they tilt their head in interest. What is this so-called thing of wonder that has kept civilizations afloat? And it is this same twisted intrigue that has left their lips parted in bemusement. Will they succumb to it’s enigmatic mystery? What shall become of the creature who begins to understand?
MONARCH OF PILFERED GOLD | A thief with a stolen crown, it is hardly an understatement to say that Mammon’s a selfish bastard. Anything that caught their eye was plucked by their greedy fingers by the right of their own claim. The excitement that coursed through their being elicits an ecstasy like no other. They will never forget the seal of death against Morningstar himself, oh how delightful it had all been. The sweet taste of bloodied victory is ever so ripe and thus this addiction to capture the same sensation thrusts them forward to chase it all over again. It was never enough for a being like Mammon who was carved from hunger itself. The pupils of their eyes dilate, looking toward shinier prizes - bigger ones that would make tidal wave changes. In their proud arrogant veneer, they mark their target in the back of their mind. Names and faces never forgotten as they seek to take one treasure after another. And perhaps the thrill of the game is only ever more exciting when the opponent viewed them as an enemy. It fuels the maniacal cackles that rip through their throat because what is theirs will be theirs. It would only take a matter of time before they conquered again and again. After all they took down the King of Hell, at this point - what else couldn’t they take? More is more.
CHARACTER CONNECTIONS & PLOTTING  EXPLORATIONS
GABRIEL ;  HOW SWEET IT TASTES TO INCITE YOUR WRATH | I really love the potential between Gabriel and Mammon as there’s undeniable heated tension. With him, Mammon feels the very sensation they have long been addicted to. The palpable hatred that lurks beneath Gabriel’s eyes lures Mammon closer - curious to see what would happen if they pushed further and incited an infernal fire. Undoubtedly I can see this dynamic burgeon into something both intimate and unspoken. For Mammon it is their newest game, their newest thrill ride to feel something and be seen. They will not deny themselves of the attention and want to bear witness to Gabriel’s promise of their destruction. ( I’m also here to see the angst )
“Destroy me if you can, desire me if you can’t” - Mammon
ROMILDA ;  FOR THIS ONE’S DEMISE SHALL BE DELICIOUS  | Mammon and Romilda appear to be playing some game of cat and mouse which offers for some spicy ideas. For Mammon, they remain closeby like a voyeur peering into the windows of another’s life - perhaps others would perceive it as a God complex. But it is not stemmed out of arrogance or superiority, rather just another form of amusement for a creature as bored as them. They follow at her feet to watch what will happen because she is interesting and they’re nosy and want to know more. Perhaps Romilda will get sick of it? Who knows! ( I could see them being lowkey kind of obnoxious to Romilda. )
“Tell me a story and I’ll give you a show.” - Mammon
REVNA ;  COME CLOSER INTO THE DARKNESS O FRAGILE ONE | To Mammon, Revna is like the perfect three course meal - so deliciously melancholic and on the verge of hopelessness. They keep her around close to keep her entrenched in her misery. It is also like the finale of a play, they await to see what will snap and send her spiraling - an event that will certainly incite their wicked glee. But Mammon believes themself to be merciful, kind even - giving her a choice to do as she pleases. They just merely amplify what she already believes. And I can’t wait to play that out - this is pretty much a parasitic relationship except Revna gets nothing out of it really. ( They’re the world's shittiest therapist tbh )
“The closer to the edge you are, the grander and greater the fall.” - Mammon
GADRIEL ;  KNEEL BEFORE MY FEET AND BEG FOR MERCY | Mammon has never forgotten the events that had unfolded, a sickly sensation that sticks to the guts of their stomach. It is both a disgrace and a dishonor to have ever allowed such a thing to have occurred. They are not one to bury the hatchet - rather they hold onto it with a grip. I would like to see Mammon and Gadriel perhaps duel once again, mayhaps to the death? If anything this too can make for some good drama. Maybe Mammon will make a friend - or just die, anythings possible! ( They’re in denial that they’re kinda pressed and acting like it’s no big deal but you know deep down it's a big deal )
“An outcome must be decided; to the victor go the spoils.” - Mammon
Are you comfortable with killing off your character? | Yes! But I would also think it’s funny if people keep trying to kill them and they just come back like, bitch you thought. Just imagine the meme potential.
IN DEPTH
Driving Character Motivation |
AND IT BEGINS ( THE ORIGINS OF IDENTITY )
Largely much of Mammon’s natural instincts seems to center around the concept of “hollowness” or “emptiness” and in turn, it would be likely that they would like to share this void sensation of others, a cruel goal but for them - it is merely how they live. Perhaps another reason to pull others into their sphere of vacancy is the twisted amusement of watching others suffer. They are wicked and have never denied it so, and to share in such pain only feeds into their own warped sense of pleasure and indulgence. However even so, their identity remains a translucent nonlinear jumble of messes, one that they do not wholly understand and seek to untangle. Simply put, they are beyond unusual, strange even and given their long years of existence, have become bored of routine.
THE CHANGE ( A NEW GAME )
And upon a frivolous whim, maybe they shall change it - or not, for they are as volatile as a child. But should change come, perhaps this will force them to act differently from the habits they have long been accustomed to. However, perhaps there is potential within their sinful avaricious vice to fall even deeper into the pitfall of hell. They have always been greedy in their collection of treasures. And surely objects have immense value but what if Mammon were to take it a step further? Breaking past the limits of inanimate items, their eyes may be set on an ever steeper goal. Their nurtured sadism bears fruit to cruel intentions; maybe it's time to take from the essence of humanity itself. It is people they wish to take from now; their hearts, their minds and even their souls.
DANCING TO THE FINALE ( BOPPING TO NIGHTMARES )
They want to carve out the creature that breathes their sweet drink of life. Through veiled grins and snide chuckles, they seek to pull the strings of those they deem of inconsequential value. Upon invisible puppet strings, Mammon will play until they tire once more. For it is all just a game to someone who’s never truly ever had a reason to care. ( Born in the void, they become just as senseless the place they call home - it is a cold cavity that is all they have known. ) They live in their own world of selfishness and conceit, the world just a playground for devils to play. So they shall dance in the dark, picking one human target to another, rejoicing in the cries of anguish. And when the song shall end and the old rickety monster becomes exhausted, they will crack their wrists. It is then they will break the fools until there is nothing left. Again and again the routine shall be repeated. Because Mammon hardly understood life in itself; only ever the depths of shadows and death.
Every word of hope and moral goodness consumed until by the black tar tongued of hell’s devil; and that is when the being is slaughtered, becoming just a husk of what they once were.
ABRIDGED : Ok so like to sum up, Mammon’s just a big asshole and just wants to screw up other people because they’re mainly 1. Bored and 2. Why the hell not it’ll be funny. 3. Collecting trash is their hobby. They’re so self absorbed in themselves that I feel like in order for Mammon to be pushed toward some outside motivation would require them to either 1. Get friends or 2. To give a fuck about someone else ( to care - WOW ) But as of the moment any sort of motivation or goal just stems from their own wants or needs which rules above all else. They don’t want much in life at the moment besides hoarding, stealing, taking new shit and playing fake God if they can. Or just be that third person ominous narrator that’s super unhelpful but is there to give unnecessary input. Demons gotta do something to pass the time, right?
Character Traits |
Positive Traits
Observant ; They have long had sharp pointed eyes - ones that watched the slightest ticks upon a visage, the subtlest movements of one’s gestures, the rhythm of footsteps of others. Mammon is a particular being who has long been watchful with a gaze that is both frightening as it is dangerous. But it is through their observations that fan the flames of mania. They play their games regardless of their opponent, their whims self serving first.
Strategic ; A good player must learn the ins and outs of any game and it is one of the first things that Mammon has long gravitated towards. They pick their wars keenly, sometimes even merely satisfied with the knowledge that things shall work as they had planned. Execution is what they have done best and it takes more than sheer luck and power to finesses such precision.
Clever ; Far from a moron, Mammon has always prided themselves in their intellect. However, exercising such wit often was a choice rather than a given. For the gluttonous demon celebrated their flaws far more than any of their redemptions. Only in dire circumstances would they ever apply themselves with the extra effort of thinking. Perhaps when a worthy enough challenge came along its merry way, they would finally exert their mind once more.
Negative Traits
Rapacity ; Mammon has always had a large appetite for intemperance. Both physical and metaphorical, they celebrate in the excess. The more they devour, the more satisfied they become. To them, boundaries are just suggestions. Their overwhelming need to take everything from everyone fuels them to function. Nothing could ever be enough. More was always better, and they live by these words on a daily basis.
Sadistic ; They enjoy the thrill of crawling under the skin of both friends and foes. It is amusing to watch souls tortured and in pain, the sound of shrieks and cries are like trumpets to their ears. They rejoice in the reactions, cackle in the face of desperate pleas - they have long been accustomed to cruelty. Perhaps it is the infliction of pain that they themselves can understand human emotions; something so strange and foreign. For they themselves have long lived null and empty.
Manipulative ; Silver tongued and clawed finger tips, Mammon is shrewd in their approach and sly in their tactics. They enjoy digging beneath the surface of what is seen and plucking out the weakest part of a flawed creation. Behind a face that may mask friendliness lies a sinister creature full of mischief and mayhem. They speak with lies, wearing deceit as their second nature. The craze they exude glints beneath the murky tar colored eyes.
In-Character Para Sample  |
EXCERPT 01: LUCIFERS FINALE.
WHEN SINNERS FALL, DEMONS SHALL RISE
T R I G G E R - W A R N I N G : Implications of Violence, Death / Murder
Morningstar, the king of Hell, how arrogantly he sits upon the throne of bones and emptied carcasses. His face is marred with arrogance; of kingly conceit that is forged from his own inflamed hubris. How pompous Lucifer appears - but perhaps it is the lens that Mammon perceives that weaves the tale which whispers of their questionable truth.
But rewind -- it begins from the beginning. The one object that sat like an artificial halo atop Lucifer’s head; oh glory to the shiniest trophy of them all. It was all they ever wanted, clenched fists with fingers dug deep into their palms. Such a beautiful crown wasted on the being they thought most undeserving.
Mammon had arrived late, birthed in the pits only then. They were nothing but a speck in the universe. Thus they knew, to be worthy of such a precious coronet, they needed to become something. Someone. Their worth must be equal to the item they wished to pursue - or so they once believed.
And so the fateful day came and Mammon strolled within the gates. Head held high, arms swung side to side as their eyes followed the audience. From one head to another - oh the looks of dissatisfaction restrained at the edges of the crowd’s ugly visages. Mammon sensed it, felt the dissent looming through the room - like fog itself, murmurs could be heard throughout. But all of them were cowards, their heads still bowed lowly before the demon king himself.
They greet the false King, a cockiness in their stride as they stand with informality, a grin crawling up their knife like features. There is a nonchalance in their posture, an indifference that seemed to agitate his royal hellness.
“I have returned,” the voice thickened and dark.
Mammon sees the rage, understands the ticking bomb that lies behind the devil’s veneer. But they did what they did best - they poked and prodded.
“The world is a pleasurable place beyond the frigid walls of this palace. It seems that you have been forgotten, your name abandoned, forsaken,” Mammon sighs - their pupils never moving an inch away from the Morningstar’s head.
“I suppose your ‘greatness’ is nothing compared to the man residing upstairs,” they mocked.
Lucifer is silent but his cool rage could be felt. The stillness that fell could stop time itself. It was then he stood, fingers gripped at the arms of his wretched throne. His voice is a hiss, fueled with laughable jealousy. Words that only Satan himself could ever conjure slithered between the flaps of whatever made his mouth.
But Mammon remained themself. Unflinching as they awaited - beckoned the fury to light brighter and brighter. They took a step, accepting a dare with the fates. And it was then that they had crossed the line, the servants of Morningstar thrusting them upon their knees.
They had trekked into uncharted territory - detonating the wrath of the top Devil. A small smile appeared on their face. It was all a joke. But the glee that curdled through their rickety bones brought forth the satisfaction they had gambled for. How sweet was the taste of Lucifer’s anger and jealousy - they could eat up more -for it was aromatically delicious.
The pits of Tartarus were nothing for a creature like them. They would claw their way out as they had done once before. How amusing it all was, they had stepped on the toes of a ‘supposed king’ who’s envy entrapped him. It was confirmed in that moment that Mammon who had wandered the planes with a trail ablazing, they had become something more. They left once but they’d swore they’d come back for more.
A KING NO MORE
And so they returned. Indifference worn upon the husk humans called a face. Their decision never came from a place of justice or hatred. No, it was the one fixation that they had long desired. And the only way for them to ever get such a prized possession was to chop it from the head of the wearer.
It was a merry day for a remorseless killer.
They spun to the tune that played in their head - the haunting whistle that made their feet tap to a jig. It was the mighty king of hell’s turn to have a taste of damnation. Perhaps somewhere the Angels would have sung for Mammon's praise. But whether the pasty holier than thou freaks did or didn’t, they didn’t give a fuck.
Mammon wanted what they wanted. Blade in the grasp tightly, exposing the whites of their knuckles. Today was the day to claim their very first love. ( Love? Obsesion? No, it was just another whim, another aimless desire. )
Swiftly they cut, quickly they shredded. It wasn’t long before the Morningstar was beheaded.
In the bloody mess of whatever made the black hearted creature, Mamon ripped the crown from his head. Their fingertips stained with the colors of death, they place the object upon their own head. In the reflection of the glassy floor - they bear a smile, teeth exposed to show their mephistophelian smile.
And yet the feeling is fleeting - as it always was. They had come and conquered but it was never really enough. The agenda was completed and their excitement gone. They looked at themselves once more, the grin fading. Their fingers gripped the item and threw it on the dirtied ground.
A sigh of exasperation exited their lips, their back turned as they walked away. Onlookers bowed before them but they did not care. They had their fun and as routine, it was time for Mammon to find a new toy to play with. But before they vanished from sight as they were long accustomed to, they glanced back once more. An itch to feel the euphoric sensations that rattled their ribcage and howled beneath their flesh.
Alas.
It was just another fucking crown.

EXCERPT 02: THE UNKNOWN.
IN MY PRESENCE, ANGELS SCREAM
It was him that they found a fascination like no other, an unsettling sensation that felt akin to perhaps what the humans may call alive. Mammon lurks within the shadows - not to close, just enough to see them. Enough to feel something within that jostled, reminiscent of a beastly heart.
“I know you’re there.” He blinds like the sun.
Mammon says nothing.
It is then that Gabriel makes his approach. Oh glory to a walking God. Each step ringing like the bells of divine retribution. But Mammon does not waver, nor do they run. They welcome it, their lips curling at the corners.
“I am here oh sweet fair haired angel,” their words spiteful. “Vanquish me if you truly dare.” It is then that they too walk into the light. They should have burned. But darkness consumes all, absorbs all and takes all.
Gabriel does not speak. But his gaze does not fall.
LOVE AND HATRED ARE SAME SIDES OF PASSION
It is Mammon's turn to take the stage and so they do. They walk closer, enough to taunt the other. They delighted in the seething temper that boiled beneath. His hatred was like no other; he bears witness to Mammon’s full depravity. It is Gabriel who seems to understand the monstrosity of what they are. And it is in this fragile perverted supposed understanding that pulls Mammon closer.
“You have cultivated your sainthood, your goodness,” Mammon remarks. “But isn’t that your purpose? The will of accursed God all too shitty. But you see Gabriel - I am like you too. It is just merely a difference in … design,” words hissed with pitch black mirth.
Their finger is pointed at them.
“For you, they strove for righteousness.”
“They gave you light. Nurtured you with warmth.”
“Your existence was a predestined fortune.”
There is ridicule dripping from their words. No bitterness, no care - just vacant rambles and little thought - a pretend of emotion conducted for theatrics. They raise their arms to the sky, their middle fingers pointed.
“But I was made as an omen, an example of all things terrible.”
Their arms dropped as their focus returned to one of God’s original favorites.
“They made me hungry.”
“They made me wretched.”
“For all the love and praise you fucking angels sing, how imperious for your kind to judge.”
Mammon closes the distance, their mouth upturned like a risen half moon.
“Doesn’t it pain you to know that our fallen creator had us all cut from the same cloth? Despise me should you wish but do not deny that even you, pure and good, harbor something as foul as hatred.” They laugh - cacophonic delirious cackles of a madman facing death.
Mammon stops - in the quietness their head tilts, a sneer pulling at their lip.
“Kill me if you choose but it’ll make you no better than the Devil.”

Extras |
HEAD CANNONS
WINGS : I’ve always imagined that Mammon would have wiry or metal looking wings? Like it would be sharp and mimic spare parts or just trash, almost as if they had made their wings by hand. I’m specifically picturing the creepy hand from the “Other Mother” in Coraline but imagine the material as wings ( reference here )
FOODIE : I think it would be funny that they’re somewhat of a fancy connoisseur of food. Well food and perhaps anything else that they can put in their mouth. I feel like their standards of what can be eaten really is at a low bar. They would be down to just chew on some dirt and be like “wow the flavor in this silt soil can not be compared to clay.” Seems like the type of thing Mammon would be into. Probably would overshare and even attempt to encourage others to try whatever the hell they’ve decided to swallow that day.
TRENDSETTER : Given that Mammon likes to take a lot of shit and probably has the attention span of a child, I don’t think they’d be wearing the same outfit on repeat ever. I also feel like they’d be the type to put on a plastic bag and then call it high fashion and maybe people would believe them? Or not - I mean the choice is simple, nod or choose death I suppose. I also see them being a big fan of sunglasses just to be dramatic when they toss it off to really emphasize how crazy and fucking wild they truly are. Also I could see them just being dramatic for no good reason with a little bit of a flair for theatrics.
WEAPON: Perhaps Mammon’s weapon of choice would be akin to something that looks like a Scythe? Or maybe they’re the type that would keep a handful of sharp blades on them, I could definitely imagine them playing with a butterfly knife and doing tricks with it since they’ve had hours upon hours to learn and fuck around. I could also see them picking up other people’s weapons and going like “well that's nice, going to add it to my collection. This one would be great for some good old stabbing.”
MUSIC : Despite being kind of a silent type, Mammon secretly is the type to be into a lot of music??? Especially when they’re doing some dirty business or like kicking someone for being a buckethead, I could imagine them jamming to some sweet tunes while doing the ass kicking. Maybe they’ll whistle too. Here’s a scene from American Psycho whis is the inspiration I got behind this ( reference here // trigger warning: murder + violence + blood )

look I know it's a Crack ship but Karen and Lysandre weirdly works for every reason they shouldn't. They're definitely these opposites attract and each of them kinda of counter in some ways the other's more extreme mindsets or challenge them in a way that makes character development very easy. For example Lysandre despising those that manipulate others and Karen hates judgemental society people. Well Karen used to be a criminal and manipulator but uses it for good now to help those that need it challenging his view and she challenges his in that (especially anime Lys) he maybe high class judgemental but it started from trying to be a good person and getting burned which she can relate to.
So opposites atttact, or hateship changing to mutual respect to crush works too, and basically I just really love the character interplay that's possible.
The height difference jokes are a bonus. Lysandre putting something on a high shelf in her line of sight and moment later hears banging about to find her 5'5 self managed to climb her way up there anyway. Goblin energy meeting refined energy is a ✨ vibe ✨
And my favorite joke: if Karen is linked to Ho-oh, fire, and Lysandre messes with Yveltal, dark, birds of a feather fly together cause they were just looking for the right type. :D
what are you willing to write when it comes to shipping?:
Ah alot generally. My only limit is nsfw tho I'm trying some of it on discord with Bruno wik ship to get more comfortable with it. Like if someone wants to get dark, lez get dark.
I will say tho fluff usually bores me terribly. I mean in writing anything can happen so I enjoy writing angst, things that have arcs, or force character development.
Just the usual day to day stuff gets old fast, or a ship that's like too perfect with one being overly gushy because then it just feels mundane. Also if one partner is great all the time then that's horribly boring, they gotta be equally troubled or the relationship just feels unbalanced.
Also no pokemon, especially if they lack a human form, I feel like that should be obvious but.....well you'd be surprised.
how large does the age gap have to be to make it uncomfortable?:
If you do the age divided by 2 minus seven but throw that in reverse the oldest person Karen can Date is 56 so there's the answer there. For younger it's 25, so we'll go with those numbers.
are you selective when shipping?:
Fairly to some degree. Unless I see a good dynamic I usually don't go for it. Tho Karen hasn't had much experience with relationships so sometimes I make a bad call cause I think I see something, but then later realize that maybe there isn't the development here I thought there was.
how far do steamy moments have to go before they are considered nsfw?:
Making out with clothes on and no touching the chest and crotch area. So hollywood pg13 style. If there is a steamy moment we both feel the characters would have a fade to black waking up later is what I go for.
who are the characters you ship your character with?:
Ah too many. Giovanni would be fun for twist Karen which I had started with someone, or mainverse if she's befriended a Silver cause well dad issues. Looker would be fun cause I feel like they'd step on each other's turf and lime he'd know she was doing crime but trying to prove it would be fun. Also home girl is bi but has mom issues so I do want to ship her with more girls just to explore that. Had one ship with an Elsa which low key could of been cute.
But yeah I have a long list but those are some highlights.
does one have to ask to ship with you?:
Yes please, but hey we can have casual rps first if you want to test the waters and then pop in and be like,"hey I think a ship might be here." If I feel it ill tell you if not I'd be super excited tk see what ideas you might have.
how often do you like to ship?:
Whenever it happens tbh 😅
are you ship obsessed or ship more - or - less?:
Leaning ship obsessed when I see a possible one but also I didn't have ships on this account for like 2 years so again it's more kinda I take it if it happens.
are you multiship?:
Gosh yes there's too many dynamics and rpers that leave like a revolving door sadly so multiship is the only viable option I can see. Bless yall that single ship you are amazing as well I could never do it.
what is your favourite ship in your current fandom?:
Jessie and James. I've loved it since childhood despite my first fictional crush being James. Just gosh they're so cute.
finally, how does one ship with you?:
Usually just ask early and we'll work something out in messages to see if it'd work, or we rp for a bit and pop in messages if you've got a ship dynamic. My messages are a friendly place folks.

2019 in books:
David McCullough, 1776: A highly accessible, if somewhat naive, depiction of the year that defined the prospects for American independence. I wouldn’t go there for deep, critical analysis. But for a story of a year, it is well done.
Michael Palin, Erebus: HMS Erebus was a British naval vessel that spent much of its career in Arctic and Antarctic exploration. If you are interested in Victorian era explorations of hard places, a fascinating read.
Emilio Corsetti III, 35 Miles from Shore: The story of an airline crash in the early 1970s in the Caribbean. What happened, why, how, who survived and what we learned. Interesting if not brilliant.
Raymond Thorp, Crow Killer: Old-fashioned tale of the inspiration behind the Robert Redford movie Jeremiah Johnson. As much fantasy as history. But it offers a flavor of a time and a subgroup few Americans would know.
James Corey, Caliban’s War: The second book of “The Expanse” series. The protomolecule is working its mojo, and Earth, Mars and the Belters are none too happy with one another. A fun read of a massive space opera.
Walter Kempowski, All for Nothing: Set in the context of the collapsing Eastern Front during WWII, this story proceeds from the fractured point of view of the Germans who are about to be turned into refugees fleeing oncoming Soviet forces. The book, notably, does not make these Germans sources of sympathy: the mood is dissonant and disordered. A real piece of literature.
Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall: Because who doesn’t want a point-of-view account of a key counselor to Henry VIII, one who rose to extraordinary wealth and power despite his humble birth and then managed the, how shall we say, removal of Kathrine as Queen? Replaced by Anne Boleyn? Who wouldn’t want to read it? It’s excellent, by the way.
James Corey, Abaddon’s Gate: Book three of The Expanse, and the protomolecule has remade humanity’s relationship to the universe. But we’ll probably screw that up, too. Another good story, filled with actual thought about the problems of space travel and space living.
MIchael Krondl, The Taste of Conquest: The Rise and Fall of the Three Great Cities of Spice: Venice, Lisbon and Amsterdam each in their turn dominated the global spice trade -- a trade that was one of the main stimuli for early colonialism and imperial conquest, and which strongly influenced the rise of the modern corporation as a linch-pin of global capitalism. The book is not as good as it should be, but the story is one that few people know, but should.
Hilary Mantel, Bring Up the Bodies: Hey, it’s time to get rid of Anne Boleyn everyone! Or, at least, to separate her head from her body. And let’s manage the English Reformation, too ... all just a few years before losing our own head. Welcome to the early/middle 1500s in England everyone!
Leigh Perry, A Skeleton in the Family: Who doesn’t have a skeleton living in their house who helps solve mysteries. I mean, who doesn’t?
JK Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: So my son has started reading Harry Potter. So I have started reading Harry Potter. I liked this book: it’s tight, it’s focused, it’s a fun read. I see the appeal.
Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, Good Omens: The answer to the questions: “What if the angels and demons charged with over-seeing Earth as humans go from the Garden of Eden to Armageddon decide that they like Earth and don’t want Armageddon to happen (even if their allies do)? And what if the Anti-Christ were raised in a perfectly mundane family in a perfectly mundane English village? How might it all turn out?” To delightful and funny effect.
JK Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Meh. Okay. Not as good as book one. But still a good story.
Gilbert King, Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America: A broad pastiche of events surrounding one of the many civil rights cases of the 1940s and 50s: the abuses and murders of several African American men accused of raping a white woman in Lakeland, FL, in 1949. With a whole lot of associated discussions of other cases, the NAACP, corrupt and criminal law enforcement, race riots, and the like. A good read. And how can it be that the bastard George HW Bush, put Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court to fill a seat once held by the staggering legal figure that was Thurgood Marshall. Shameful is the only word.
JK Rowling, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: Certainly better than the Chamber of Secrets. A darker turn. But beginning to get padded as readers demanded “more” if not “better.”
James Corey, Cibola Burn: Book 4 of The Expanse ... and I didn’t like it. It seemed like filler, a book written to a contract deadline. Maybe it will pay off in the end. But another one like that and I’m not going to care.
Tom Phillips, Humans: A Brief History of How We Fucked It All Up: Did you know our oldest known ancestor, Lucy, probably died by falling out of a tree? If stories about how people have messed things up, have suffered both intentional and unintentional consequences, turn you on, do I ever have the book for you. Schadenfreude much?
JK Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Dear lord is this book long. Why? No doubt because the fans wanted it to be. But it is as gratuitously padded as any book I have ever read. It’s okay. But I wasn’t particularly impressed. Perhaps another six Quidditch matches would have helped ....
Adam Higginbotham, Midnight in Chernobyl: Thought the HBO miniseries was scary? It was tame. I mean: the Soviets, with their level of “technical prowess” and their industrial “quality control checks” ran the facility. Heck, Chernobyl wasn’t even their first disaster. Let’s just put it this way: the actual fuel piles in each of the FOUR Chernobyl reactors were so big that: 1) different sections had different characteristics, and didn’t all operate at the same rates or temperatures; and 2) the monitoring equipment couldn’t record how all of the pile was operating at any time. Happy now? Russia still has 10 Chernobyl-style reactors in operation. Enjoy your good night’s sleep everyone!
JK Rowling, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: Yes, yes: I know. This isn’t Order of the Phoenix. Well, I read Order of the Phoenix many years ago, and thought it was deeply annoying. A pile of words with little point. A way to keep the audience happy with long passages about very little.
Meanwhile, I, like my son, roared through Half-Blood Prince. A ripping good tale. Much tighter than the last several of the series.
JK Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: A fine read. A bit slow getting going: let’s go here! Let’s go there! Let’s recap the plot! But after the first 1/3 or so, the story got moving and I enjoyed it. Didn’t expect great literature; didn’t get great literature. But then again, I deeply appreciate how much pleasure my son got from this, and how excited my daughter is to engage with it. If it hadn’t been conceived and written, it seems like there’d be a Harry Potter sized hole in the universe.
Neil Gaiman, American Gods: In all honesty, I didn’t really like the first 2/3 of this book: too many tangents; too many sub-stories for the sake of sub-stories. And I’m still not sure I think it was a great book. But I really enjoyed the last third of it, and there were moments, vignettes, and sentences that truly blew me away. So I am glad I stayed with it.
Kameron Hurley, The Light Brigade: A sci fi story of soldiers apparently engaged in a war with Mars who are transported to the battlefield as beams of light. One gets unhinged from time. I am not sure it was worth the work, and I came to understand it was based on a short story and so, at times, it seemed a bit one-trick pony-ish. But it had its share of moments.
Daniel James Brown, The Boys in the Boat: A bit slow going at first, but it grows more compelling as it moved forward. This is the story of the 1936 crew (rowing) team at the University of Washington that went to Berlin and won the gold medal as Adolf Hitler watched. An interesting story about crew as a sport (about which I knew basically nothing), and life in Depression-era Washington state -- with a little, somewhat gratuitous, commentary about life in Nazi Germany layered in. One takeaway? The actor Hugh Laurie’s father was the lead oarsman on the British crew at Berlin in 1936. Hugh Laurie rowed crew at Cambridge as well.
James Corey, Nemesis Games: The next in the Expanse series. Much more enjoyable than the last one, but still a bit strained. One heck of a plot “twist.” A perfectly lovely way to relax; didn’t change my life. Some interesting character twists. But also a lot of “here are some giant developments (a lot of giant stuff) that give us lots of things to write about going forward!”
Alan Stern and David Grinspoon, Chasing New Horizons: the story of the New Horizons mission to Pluto. Interesting behind the scenes look at how the mission got funded, planned and implemented. Accessible in terms of the explanations; thick with bureaucratic story-telling and summary. It turns out this stuff is really, really hard. Interesting, but it didn’t blow me away.
And to end the year, I am reading: Christopher Moore, Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal: What if 13 year old Jesus had a buddy who, 2000 years later, wrote a gospel that filled in those missing years of Joshua’s (as Biff calls Jesus) life? Well, here’s your answer.

Psychopath Diary / Drama Review.
Tumblr media
This is just my opinions on the kdrama Psychopath Diary. There are almost no spoilers, just me talking about how I felt about the show. But if I feel like there are spoilers (about specific things, not just general things) then I put a spoiler warning up!
Psychopath Diary was a drama I thought wasn't for me. The plot didn't sound like something I would really enjoy; crime-thrillers aren’t often very high on my lists. However, I tried it out for Yoon Shi Yoon and it captivated me and amused me from the very first episode.
This drama surprised me so much. The story is just as crazy as it sounds, memory loss isn't anything new in kdramas and often I shudder when I hear the words amnesia being used to advance the plot, but the story is told in such a amusing, cleaver and sincere sort of way that you can't help but be hooked by it. The show always seemed to be very aware of itself and what it was trying to do and just very comfortable with its absurdity.
The tone of the story is rather slice of life some places, but achieves those more dramatic moments when it needs to, humor is on the black side and takes advantage of how ridiculous everything is around what I appreciated and it always managed to blend it, thrill and more the mundane story of the characters we meet along the way.
I didn’t feel like the drama thread a lot of new ways with some of the tropes it used, or dives too deeply into them. It more so just has a lot of fun with them. There is a very nice balance between the comedy, the absurd and then the more thriller aspect of the show, which makes it stand out. It makes Psychopath Diary become unlike other kdramas I have seen before.
I expected the more serious side of the show to take over at some point, for the comedy to sort of step aside as the story got bleaker. But the story always seems to flow well between those different genres the show has all mixed up in there. It had a rhythm going on. There is always some twist to every aspect of the story, and the comedy interrupts the tension a lot of the time and vice versa. There was such a nice mix going on there, one that I didn’t think would work as well as they did. It never gets too tired.
They never make you guess too much, not even with who the real psychopath is; that makes us just in on the joke. You have a hunch about where this is going, but still the drama is so cleverly absurd that you do have a hard time guessing what will happen next. And the drama makes great use of it.
In Woo also always managed to be one step ahead of the other characters, and while it did feel a bit repetitive (and very annoying towards the end, but in a good way), that I still found myself very enthralled and excited about each new episode. In Woo is a killer I could really enjoy. He's just evil, no trauma or explanation needed, and it’s just great to watch. It worked out well for the story and you somehow never knew what he would do next.
Sometimes he seems a little too cartoonish as the bad guy, smirking and laughing in the background. But it felt so intentional and in the spirit of the humor within the show, that it sorts of works.
Sometimes the comedy goes a bit overboard, and sometimes you can sense when the switch between the tension, the more dramatic points, and the more comedic aspects of the shows (like when the twists are revealed) but it is always so very entertaining and just a very fun ride throughout. I was expecting it loose steam at some point, for the plot to become way to ridiculous, but it just went full steam ahead and just made this crazy plot its own.
There is very little romance here. I was expecting more, but I was very happy with how little we got. There was plenty else to do within the story already and adding romance on top of that would have been too much. We just got more solid character interactions and different relationship development instead. There was definite fondness, possible attraction between Dong Sik and Shim Bo Kyung. But there weren’t much more than a few longing eye-contacts and so on between them
I liked Bo Kyung, our female heroine, as a character. She was always very consistent with herself, rather sensible and smart and always went after what she thought was right. Her character was never set aside as the story went along, people listened to her, she was valued, and she had real impact on the story. So often female cops on these shows are just there running along with the men and just there to get into dangers. Not here.
Dong Sik who goes from being a pushover to someone who learns to stand up for himself, , and over the story does a good job with presenting the characters to us so we can understand them, and get behind their actions and why they did things the way they did them; despite the absurdity that is prevalent all around them. Yoon Shi Yoon plays Dong Sik so well. He is so good in this role and he gets to show all his aspects as an actor here. All the actors here are very good in their roles.

Craig Mazin’s general theory on screenwriting
There is nothing honest or truthful about rigid structural forms. Robotically following a template (e.g. Syd Field’s 3-act structure or Chris Vogler’s hero's journey) likely results in a well-structured bad script. What real writers follow are their characters, and what great writers follow are their characters as they evolve around a central dramatic argument that is meaningful to other human beings.
Structure is not a tool, it is a symptom; it is a symptom of a character's relationship with the central dramatic argument.
Structure isn't something you write well, it is something that happens because you wrote well. There is a lot of what and when in structural templates but if we don't know why these are there, how are we supposed to know how to write them? "What's my motivation?" may be a cliché but it is the key to structure: what is the purpose of the narration?
Narration helps us move through a changing world; story is about a change of state and there are three basic axes on which change can occur:
internal: the character’s thoughts and feelings; it zigzags all over the place.
interpersonal: the main relationship; usually starts neutral then, depending on how the story unfolds, it can dip, rise, plummet, spike.
external: the plot; usually a straight line with a start and an end.
Narration is made up of scenes and follows the Hegelian dialectic: we take a thesis (”[x] is true”) and apply an antithesis (”no, [x] is not true and here's why”). What results from this collision is a new thesis called the synthesis which starts the whole process over again.
Every scene begins with a truth, something happens inside that scene that challenges it, a new truth emerges at the end, then we begin again. At the beginning of every scene we have a situation involving the three basic axes of change and we fire an antithesis at least at one of them to create something new. This is what story is -- constant changes. And the glue that holds these changes together is called the theme (or unity, first used by Aristotle in Poetics).
The purpose of the story is to take the main character from ignorance of the truth of the theme to the embodiment of the theme through action.
The theme is the central dramatic argument that has to be an actual argument (e.g. “life is beautiful even amidst horrors”) and not a vague concept (e.g. “brotherhood”) because a script without a central dramatic argument feels empty and pointless. But you probably don't want to start with the argument as it is a weird way to begin a script. Usually, we think of an idea first but then we should ask, "What central dramatic argument fits with this?" and, ideally, you should think ironically here, e.g.
idea: “a fish has to find another fish somewhere in the ocean”
central dramatic argument: “no matter how much you want to hold onto someone you love, sometimes you have to let them go”
While the argument sounds pretty cliché, it is great to pair with the idea because it contains irony, i.e. the outcome of reunion will be a separation. This is thematic structure and it guides the writing process. And you can always have a really good script built around a cliché. It’s the execution around the cliché that should be interesting, that’s what matters.
Usually we introduce our protagonist in an ordinary world but ordinary doesn’t equal mundane. It just means that the protagonist's life exemplifies their ignorance of the theme (central dramatic argument); in fact, typically, they believe the opposite, the anti theme. This ignorance is likely what enabled them to achieve a stasis that is not a perfect life, it's not the best life they could live, it is just the life they settled for; an “acceptable perfection”.
Without the writer’s "divine nudge", their life could go on like this forever, so our job is to undermine it via an inciting incident. It is a moment designed to disrupt a character's stasis, making the continuation of their specific "acceptable perfection" impossible and begin their transformation. It is genetically engineered to break this character's soul and destroy them. Everything the character does at this stage is in service of trying to recapture the stasis that's been destroyed. So your heroes, on some level, should be cowards in a manner of "I don't want things to change, please just let me be."
Underlying that attitude is fear and fear in your character is the heart of empathy. We feel for characters when we fear with them. Every protagonist fears something and this fear, the vulnerability, is our connection to a character. And the fearful hero should have lived their lives to avoid the thing they are afraid of. We are taking their safety blanket away and pushing them forward; they wanna get back what they lost and they wanna go backwards. This tension is what propels us through the second act portion of the story.
When you think about plot as something to jam characters into, that's when you run out of road around the second act. You run out of plot because it wasn't generated by anything other than you. A story is a journey during which characters grow from thinking one way to thinking the opposite. You are the parent with a lesson to teach them but the characters have to make these choices. If you write with that in mind, when you start thinking about plot as something that you are doing to your characters, that's when you can lead them from anti theme to theme, and you never have to ask "What should happen next?" only "How can I make what happens next better?" But how do we teach characters?
First, by reinforcing the anti theme. The protagonist is knocked out of their stasis and they are trying to get back to it. They are going to experience new things and these should reinforce their belief in the anti theme, making them want to get back to their stasis even more. We are basically creating a torture chamber here. We write a world where we oppose our character's desires and by doing so, we reinforce their need to go backwards. We design moments of push-and-push-back. We keep forcing them forward but also put things in their path that make them wanna go back. This creates tension, which is exciting, and when they get past those obstacles, it will be meaningful.
Then comes the element of doubt. The protagonist still believes the anti theme, so they need to run into something or someone that exemplifies the opposite, the theme. When they get a glimpse of this other way of living, they realize there is value to it, it is attractive to them, and their belief in the anti theme wavers. This doubt creates a natural internal conflict. The protagonist is rational as in that they have to have at least the capacity to see that there is a better way to live, which is a critical component. And it is fear that separates the irrational hero from their rational potential. Through circumstance, necessity, or another character's actions, the hero experiences a moment of acting in harmony with the theme. This could be something they do or they could watch someone else do it (active vs passive experience), and it brings about the magical midpoint change.
The protagonist's belief system has been challenged but there is no willingness to go all the way and believe the theme yet. They may not even understand the theme yet but they are already wondering if the anti theme they’ve been clinging to really answers or solves everything. And the very moment the protagonist considers the possibility of switching sides, you hammer them back in the other direction. The story has to make them shrink back into their "old way" and thus the hero retreats. This is the essence of dramatic reversal.
Something unexpected and contradictory/ironic works best here. This punishment makes the eventual completion of the journey that much more impressive. The further you go here, the more you feel at the end. When you design obstacles, lessons, glimpses of the other way, rewards, punishments, the beating back and pushing forward, keep thinking ironically. Think of surprises that twist the knife. If they have to face their fear, make it overwhelming. Don't disappoint, punish. Make characters lower their defenses by convincing them that everything is going to be okay, then punch them right in the face -- metaphorically. As a writer, you are the Old Testament God. Ask the questions "Where is my protagonist on their quest between theme and anti theme?" and "What would be the meanest thing I could do to them right now?" Then do that over and over again until they are left without a belief. As the demands of the narrative begin to overwhelm the protagonist, they begin to realize that their limitations are not physical but thematic.
This is when the other side begins to seem increasingly reasonable but they still cannot embrace it. They are given a chance to do so but they fail at it because they still cannot quite accept the theme. They just lost their belief in the anti theme. They are trapped between rejection of the old and acceptance of the new because the old way doesn’t work anymore and the new seems insane/unattainable. This is why they call this a low point. The original goal of going back to stasis is blown to bits. Whatever they believed at the beginning has been exposed as a sham but the enormity of the real goal is impossibly daunting. The protagonist cannot yet accept the theme because it is too scary. Their core values are gone but they aren’t ready to replace them with new ones. The protagonist is lost. What we need from drama is moments where we connect to another person's sense of being lost because we've all been lost. This will make the ending work. In absence of this there can be no catharsis.
Characters develop as they move through the narrative. The narrative is gonna impact their relationship to the theme. When a character finishes interacting with this portion of the narrative, their relationship to the theme or central dramatic argument changes from "I don’t believe that" to "I don't believe what I used to but I cannot believe this new stuff yet, either." If we think in terms of acts, this happens around the end of the second act, and it ushers in the defining moment when the character needs to face their greatest challenge and worst fear. This resolves the story being told and the life of the character; it brings them to a new stasis and balance (=synthesis).
You have to design a moment that's gonna test the protagonist's faith in the theme. They have to go through something to prove they believe in this new theme. It's not enough to say "I get it, I was wrong." They have to prove it via action and in a way where they literally embody the new theme with everything they have. Before that, there is another round of torture, the relapse, which is a temptation right before their big decision/defining moment. We hold up their safety blanket and say, "Go ahead, character. Take it and go back to your old ways." They have to reject this and do something extraordinary to embody the truth of the theme. They have to act in accordance with the theme and by doing so, they prevail.
We have to create a mechanism to tempt and then force action. It also produces one last chance to punish the character: they experience the cost of embracing the new theme and they don’t back down, they demonstrate their faith in it, which brings a reward. Finally, after many collisions of many theses and antitheses, there is one big final synthesis which we need to see: the after-story life in harmony with the central dramatic argument. If you remove everything in between the first and last scene, there should only be one fundamental difference: in the beginning, the protagonist acts in accordance of the anti theme and at the end it is replaced by the theme.
There is really only one big act and it's called your story.

Riverdale Couples and Ships as Romantic Tropes (Part II). 🌹
Tumblr media
Here is Part II of the list!
#11. Bughead (Jughead Jones & Betty Cooper; ROMANTIC TROPE: CHILDHOOD FRIENDS ROMANCE)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Childhood Friend Romance
Childhood Friend Romance is a part of romantic plots, when characters develop romantic feelings for someone who they spent their childhood years with. Often the pair will see each other as Just Friends (and may even deny accusations that they might have a different type of relationship); then, when puberty hits or when they meet again after being apart for some time, they will realize that the other is all grown up. If the pair goes through a Puppy Love phase from the very beginning, a Childhood Marriage Promise may be involved. Resistance to see a childhood friend as a potential romantic partner is known as the "Westermarck effect", a theory that claims that people who grew up together before the age of 6 are likely to become hardwired to think about each other Like Brother and Sister, with a Stupid Sexy Friend squicked reaction to the notion of romance. (Other studies question this on the basis that though few of the people they examined had major romantic relationships with childhood friends, many had crushes and romantic feelings that just didn't make it.) Subtrope of Childhood Friends. See also Patient Childhood Love Interest, a subtrope common in Harem Series. Compare also with High-School Sweethearts. Often benefits from First Girl Wins.
#10. Veggie (Reggie Mantle & Veronica Lodge; ROMANTIC TROPE: SLAP-SLAP-KISS)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Slap-Slap-Kiss
"[Punches Hiccup on the arm] That was for kidnapping me. [Kisses him on the cheek] That was for everything else."— Astrid, How to Train Your Dragon
This trope is nothing but universal in romantic stories. It frequently brings to a close the Will They or Won't They? phase of a Romance Arc. When a male and female character spend a lot of time bickering, it is all but inevitable that sooner or later he will interrupt her in mid-rant by suddenly grabbing her and kissing her. (Less frequently, she grabs and kisses him.) The kissed one rarely resists, and usually responds wholeheartedly. Usually this is triggered by their hostilities reaching a climax that results in an exchange of slaps, followed by a moment where both stare at each other in combined confusion and shock, after which they dive into the kiss. Either way, the kiss prompts both to realize that they've been in love all this time — the rationale being that they wouldn't argue so much if they didn't give a damn about each other. Normally results in some kind of permanent change in their relationship. The concept is related to the theory that hate is not necessarily the opposite of love so much as its twisted twin; its opposite would be apathy. Ergo, lots of contained emotion towards a person might be translated into lust given the proper catalyst. Pulled off successfully, it can be... quite satisfying. Otherwise, not so much. This trope is a major factor in Foe Yay shipping, since such arguments between those characters in the actual shows are often similar to examples of this trope (or even get Why Don't You Marry It? reactions). It should be noted that in Real Life it's not exactly a sign of a healthy relationship, with the exception of a little roleplay between consenting adults. Note that this trope is mostly Exactly What It Says on the Tin. If there is no kiss, that's Belligerent Sexual Tension. Dating back at least to William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. Compare "Shut Up" Kiss, Love at First Punch, Belligerent Sexual Tension, "Take That!" Kiss, Vitriolic Best Buds, and Destructo-Nookie. Often considered in similar terms to Foe Yay. Tsunderes are often involved on at least one end. Kiss-Kiss-Slap is this in reverse (kissing, then fighting).

HoYay
Homoeroticism, yay! Those moments of plot, dialogue, acting, etc., that fans delight in interpreting as homoerotic. It probably originates from the old days, when the homosexuality taboo was serious enough that every gay pairing was considered a Crack Pairing, so when authors wrote same-sex characters as very intimate with each other, audiences largely accepted that they are just very good friends, and moved on, or when authors wrote outright references to homosexuality, most just laughed at the sheer absurdity of the thought. With the gradual dissolution of homophobic moral codes, more and more writers have been able to publish and share their work uncensored, changing media forever. Nowadays, Yaoi Fans and Yuri Fans willingly interpret any interaction as potentially gay, for characters without canonical orientations and even for those specifically stated by their creators to be straight (in which case the author may be very annoyed by the fans' insistence otherwise). Cultural differences also have their say here. The level of accepted physical intimacy between close friends and adult relatives is hardly constant across various eras and nationalities, so, for example, the hugs and kisses which seemed mundane for an antiquated reader may appear blatantly erotic in the eyes of a contemporary one. In particular, the concept of Romantic Two-Girl Friendship — and Romantic Two-Guy Friendship — highly intimate yet platonic, only began falling out of use in the latter half of the 19th century. When this is done intentionally, it's Homoerotic Subtext, or possibly Implied Love Interest or Ship Tease. In the related trope called Foe Yay, even rivals or mortal enemies can get this treatment by fans and writers alike, especially if they have a more friendly past together, or one is inordinately obsessed with the other. In Fan Fic, this is the direct cause of many a Slash Fic.

Opposites Attract
"Strange extremes meet in love's pathway."—The Scarlet Pimpernel
Strong relationships, in both TV and real life, thrive on how each member compensates for the other’s weaknesses with their own strengths, and vice versa. A Motor Mouth just isn’t as funny if he doesn’t have the Straight Man to torment. Similarly, only when a sweet, shy person is paired up with an equally jerkish one is their kindness and shyness made all the more noticeable. It is all but guaranteed that the characters’ differences will cause more friction than harmony between them. That’s what gives the Odd Couple its fuel for Slap-Slap-Kiss, Will They or Won't They?, and Aww, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other situations. Bickering and mushiness in one package. What’s not to like? The Odd Friendship also has elements of this, but tends to focus on how the differences make them see each other, and maybe the world, through new eyes. Perhaps the serious one is Not So Above It All, or the Shrinking Violet has an inner strength they never knew they had. A Moe Couplet also does something similar to this, focusing on how each half of the couplet brings out the other's endearing or nurturing traits. Opposites attract has become so widespread in buddy cop shows, in the form of Serious White Guy meets Loud Black Guy, that it branched off into its own subtrope. About the biggest challenge in creating a day-and-night dynamic is to keep the attract and repel cases relatively balanced. When the pendulum swings too far toward the repel side and the characters seem more interested in torturing each other than helping out, it’s no longer cute to watch; it’s just masochistic. The key (both in fiction and in Real Life) is to watch the pair's goals. If they want the same thing but use completely different methods to achieve it, it's this trope. If they want different things entirely, it's a divorce waiting to happen. If you add a third-party mediator for balance, you get a Power Trio. Contrast Birds of a Feather. Compare Too Much Alike.
#07. Cheronica (Cheryl Blossom & Veronica Lodge; ROMANTIC TROPE: VILLAINOUS CRUSH)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Villainous Crush
"Just fear me. Love me. Do as I say, and I shall be your slave."— Jareth the Goblin King to Sarah, Labyrinth
This trope applies whenever a villainous character has romantic and/or sexual feelings for a heroic one. If this crush takes a turn for the perverse (and most such crushes tend towards this), this can lead to tropes like I Have You Now, My Pretty, Forceful Kiss, Bathe Her and Bring Her to Me, And Now You Must Marry Me, Scarpia Ultimatum, and Go-Go Enslavement where the villain tries to force their desires upon the character, although none of those require a Villainous Crush. Additionally, the villain may become a Stalker with a Crush. If the crush itself is a motivating factor in their Start of Darkness, then it's Love Makes You Evil. This trope isn't always negative, though. This trope can conversely be a very humanising trait for an Anti-Villain. The heroic character may become a Morality Pet, and can be fairly certain that their villainous admirer will never harm them or allow harm to come to them, barring certain exceptions. They may even step in to protect them from other villains who have fewer compunctions. Taken all the way, it may become Love Redeems. If the feelings are mutual or an actual relationship develops, then it's Dating Catwoman instead. When this is purely subtextual, see Foe Romance Subtext. The specific variant when the Evil Empress captures the hero to seduce him is Villainesses Want Heroes. Not to be confused with Foe Yay, which are purely audience reactions.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Birds Of A Feather
Grace: My mum always said opposites attract. Rich: That's magnets. We're people.—Skins
Relationships, particularly romantic ones, tend to thrive when the people involved are similar. People are simply more likely to get along if they share common interests, values, beliefs, and goals. Thus people with similar personalities will often flow together easily, whether romantically or not. The dynamic of this pair differs widely from Opposites Attract pair. Their personalities can often be interchangeable and both of them can have a same role if they are a part of a group. However, their common obstacle is having a harder time to compensate for each other's weaknesses. Be warned, writers: while often Truth in Television, this trope can sometimes be seen to create a poorly written Love Interest who just happens to be a Gender Flip of the main character. When the commonalities are much fewer but still create a bond, see Commonality Connection. Contrast Too Much Alike.
#05. Beronica (Veronica Lodge & Betty Cooper; ROMANTIC TROPE: ROMANTIC TWO-GIRL FRIENDSHIP)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Romantic Two-Girl Friendship
"It was perfectly acceptable at Baker & Inglis to get a crush on a fellow classmate. At a girls school a certain amount of emotional energy, normally expended on boys, gets redirected into friendships."—Middlesex
At the beginning of adolescence, there is a time when friendship is emphasized, usually junior high/middle school. These friendships can have very strong emotional bonds, and, when two girls develop a close bond, it will almost appear to be a romance. They hold hands. Getting together to do something is a "date." Fights are treated as a "break-up." They're willing to sleep next to each other in the same bed (and maybe even cuddle). They're also sometimes capable of moving and speaking in perfect unison. They may not actually be in a romantic relationship, but it is emphasized in such a way that if they were, you'd assume it'd look this way. In the Western world, this was far more common up until the late 1800s, and applied to both men and women, even into adulthood. It was referred to as "romantic friendship." This practice waned at the turn of the 20th century as adults, particularly men, did not want to be mistaken as homosexual. Note Generally, it still only occurs between young girls, where it is more socially acceptable and not indicative of sexual orientation. In Japan, this is known as "Class S" and is far more common than in the West. Due to the influence of Western female literature,Note the Japanese developed a belief that young girls are expected to have friendships with each other that emulate boyfriend–girlfriend relationships. This is considered a temporary but wonderful part of adolescence, which they can later "graduate" from to "real" relationships with boys. To remain in a "Class S" relationship past middle school is seen as a sign of immaturity, although it is expected that these friendships will continue into adulthood without the romantic elements. The possibility of one or more of the girls involved in a "Class S" relationship being truly invested in the other romantically is usually ignored. If the romance starts to become too passionate, parents may try to intervene to separate the girls. This should never become physical that way; it would "corrupt" the Incorruptible Pure Pureness, which is then traded in for marriage. If the girls do cross the line into sex (or even passionate kissing), they are no longer this trope, instead becoming Schoolgirl Lesbians, and are treated differently. Compare Heterosexual Life-Partners, where it just doesn't seem as romantic but remains a tremendously important personal bond, above and beyond a genuine romantic relationship. Also compare Experimented in College.
#04. Varchie (Archie Andrews & Veronica Lodge; ROMANTIC TROPE: UPTOWN GIRL)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Uptown Girl
"She's a rich girl, she don't try to hide it, Diamonds on the soles of her shoes. He's a poor boy, empty as a pocket, Empty as a pocket with nothing to lose."—Paul Simon, "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes"
You know the story. It's a love story. Our lovers are from different worlds — one wealthy, one not. The poor girl has fallen in love with the Gentleman Snarker, or the Unlucky Everydude secretly courts the daughter of the richest man in town. And she loves him too. Maybe it was Love at First Sight. Maybe she has a habit of slipping out to the seedier side of town for a night of fun. Maybe they've been friends their whole lives and the difference in status never really mattered. Will their love be enough to let them be happy together?
In any case, this is usually played out in one of three ways:
The poor guy and rich girl mutually fall in love, and neither one cares about their differences in wealth. People around them, however, do, and conspire to interfere with True Love.
The poor guy falls for the rich girl, even though he knows that she's out of his league. Undaunted, our hero engages in some Zany Scheme to get her to notice him or be impressed by him. This usually ends with the girl revealing that she doesn't care if he's rich or poor, and that she loves him for who he is.
The poor guy and the rich girl fall for one another, but he doesn't know she's rich at first. When he finds out, he's either intimidated by her wealth once he finds out, or else doesn't think he's good enough for her. As before, she doesn't care about such things, and has to convince him that he's the one she wants.
When the rich girl wants nothing to do with the poor guy, but slowly warms up to him, it's a different trope entirely. Note that the roles aren't locked by gender: a working-class girl who loves a rich boy also fits this trope, as do two lovers of the same gender. A relationship variant of the Odd Couple and quite often overlaps with Nobody Thinks It Will Work. Also often leads to cases of I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me, either with severe case of insecurity (like the third type above), or simply the poor guy being constantly feeling lucky and appreciative that someone so rich could fall for him. If it's not just the fact that she comes from money, but that he feels like she's above him, she's a Peerless Love Interest. Compare with All Girls Want Bad Boys, which often follows the same socioeconomic groups (or the inverse, if the girl is The Ingenue and the boy is an Gentleman Snarker or Spoiled Brat). Can overlap with Single Woman Seeks Good Man as it is the guy's personality that wins her heart (as is the case mentioned above). Not to be confused with the Brittany Murphy film Uptown Girls, which doesn't use this trope. Not to be confused with City Mouse either. This is transitioning into Dead Horse Trope territory, since interclass marriage is no longer shocking, and the expectation that men should be the breadwinner in the family is much weaker today than it used to be. On the other hand, it may become an Undead Horse Trope with the emergence of culture wars and new waves of social stratification. For the non-romantic variant, see Interclass Friendship. For the version endemic to India, see Type Caste, although that trope is not restricted solely to marriage and relationships.
#03. Falice (FP Jones & Alice Cooper; ROMANTIC TROPE: UNRESOLVED SEXUAL TENSION AKA UST)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unresolved Sexual Tension (UST)
"To repress one's feelings only makes them stronger."— Yu Shu Lien, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Two people are obviously attracted to each other, but some element of the story is keeping them apart. This tension is frequently referred to as UST in fandom, where it is pronounced "oost" or Yu-Ess-Tee. Also known as "Long Unresolved Sexual Tension". Belligerent Sexual Tension is a way to keep the UST by having the couple fight each other too much to actually get together. They Do is when it gets resolved (Literally Falling in Love might help). Shipping Bed Death and Strangled by the Red String are when it gets resolved badly. Compare All Love Is Unrequited, Will They or Won't They?, Just Friends, Moment Killer (a staple of a UST relationship), Maybe Ever After (a more uncertain version), Cannot Spit It Out. Contrast Official Couple, when the couple is already together, and Friends with Benefits, where the primarybond in the relationship is sex.
#02. Barchie (Archie Andrews & Betty Cooper; ROMANTIC TROPE: WILL THEY OR WON’T THEY?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Will They Or Won’t They?
"Pam is very attractive, no question. If I didn't have an award show to host, I could easily see having two or three seasons of will-they-won't-they sexual tension that ultimately goes nowhere."—Conan O'Brien, Emmy 2006 opening skit, after crashing, The Office (US)
Two characters, often combative but with obvious Unresolved Sexual Tension, resist going into a full blown relationship for a rather long time. Usually the two characters will be presented so that "they will" is the conclusion to root for; only rarely is the question of whether the writers think they should in any real doubt. Actually ending the dance is a tricky business. It is difficult for shows to recover from the loss of a major source of dramatic tension represented by an unrequited relationship. Many shows Jump the Shark or suffer Shipping Bed Death when the two characters finally get together. A common problem is that the show suddenly becomes about the relationship rather than remaining true to its original premise. Sometimes an attempt is made to introduce a new source of dramatic tension, but it is frequently cheesy and lame. To avoid this, many shows choose to answer the question and end the show nearly simultaneously via a Last Minute Hookup. Of course, the opposite can also occur. Shows can go out of their way to avoid resolving the relationship, making ever-more-desperate narrative leaps. In longer-running shows, they may even have the characters hook up for a little while, only to split up over and over again, until by the time they finally let the characters get actually, technically married, the show has lost its viewership anyway. Belligerent Sexual Tension is often a victim of this. Sometimes a Love Epiphany can be used to have a character realize his/her feelings, but still not resolve the question, just add a new dynamic to it. A fundamental Shipping-inducement strategy. See also Almost Kiss, Held Gaze, Relationship Upgrade, Moment Killer, Everyone Can See It. When a series ends without even a hint of resolution to will-they-or-won't-they, it's No Romantic Resolution. If it's more ambiguous, it's Maybe Ever After. Contrast Friends with Benefits, where they definitelydo it, but without the emotional baggage. Compare Just Friends and They Do. Contrast Platonic Life-Partners and Ship Sinking — they won't. See Just Eat Gilligan if it's a major plot point. See also Break-Up/Make-Up Scenario when they separate for some dramatic reason, spend a time apart, then reconcile (usually with a kiss, which breaks the Will They Or Won't They)
#01. Jeronica (Jughead Jones & Veronica Lodge;  ROMANTIC TROPE: BELLIGERENT SEXUAL TENSION AKA BST)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Belligerent Sexual Tension (BST)
"Wonderful girl! Either I'm gonna kill her, or I'm beginning to like her!"— Han Solo about Princess Leia Organa, A New Hope
There's a couple, usually a sometimes sweet, sometimes grouchy female (Tsundere) paired with a secretly-kind jerk (Jerk With A Heart Of Gold), who are not able to admit their feelings. At the top of their lungs. Despite the conflict, there is an attraction. This is usually obvious to everyone around except the couple. Confront them with the obvious, they'll deny deny deny. Sometimes they will progress to admitting their friendship but insist they are Just Friends. Eventually, they can admit their feelings to practically anyone except their loved one. It ends up where both characters dance around admitting their feelings as if the words "I love you" are some sort of death curse, much to the frustration of the audience and the other characters. Older Than Steam, since this is used in Much Ado About Nothing, and has varying degrees of popularity at different times. If there is a Love Epiphany with one of these characters, expect it to change nothing, at least in the short term. This can even be true in established long-term relationships; see Like an Old Married Couple. If the whole relationship is defined by the belligerence, it can become The Masochism Tango. If a pair of outright enemies has this sort of attraction, it's a case of Foe Romance Subtext and when it ultimately goes from subtext to text, then it's Dating Catwoman. See also Slap-Slap-Kiss, No Accounting for Taste, Well, Excuse Me, Princess! and Defrosting Ice Queen. If we're lucky, at the end we may get to see a moment of Aww, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other. Expect this couple to be either extremely popular or completely hated by the fandom. For the platonic version, compare Vitriolic Best Buds and With Friends Like These.... Not to be confused with Hate at First Sight, although it may overlap.

Note
hey hope!! i’ve completely run out of things to watch recently and was wonderinf if you had any recs of movies and tv shows??
HI!
It’s your lucky day because I have found myself in a hole of watching many new things lately that I’ve more or less found enjoyable so hopefully you will too? lol
1. Russian Doll:  Nadia, a young woman who is on a journey to be the guest of honor at a party in New York City. But she gets caught in a mysterious loop as she repeatedly attends the same event and dies at the end of the night each time – only to awaken the next day unharmed as if nothing had happened.
(I know I’m late to the party with that one, but it is quite literally one of the best comedy-dramas I’ve seen in a long while, not to mention Natasha Lyonne, the ultimate babe, stars in it. It is, blatantly, obvious that the script was written by women (thank god) and it has a cool, mind-trip twist at the end that’ll have you guessing what actually was happening the entire time. Super easy to binge!! 10/10)
2. Perfume:  When a woman is found murdered with scent glands excised from her body, a detective probes a group of friends who attended boarding school with her.
(A German mystery-crime-thriller that is way too convoluted and intertwined to know the real culprit of the grisly yet complex murders until the few minutes of the last episode. It has an incredibly intriguing script with intricate details and dialogue. Pleasantly surprised by how solid the entire storyline and characters were. TW though!! There are scenes of obscene sex, implied rape, domestic abuse, and sexual assault. So be careful if those things trigger you. Watching it in German with English subtitles is the way to go, though. Trust me.)
3. Handsome Devil:  Two opposites, a loner and the top athlete become friends at a rugby-obsessed boarding school, and the authorities test their friendship.
(An irish coming-of-age LGBT film that, again, pleasantly surprised me with how well it was executed underneath the guise of an overly cliche storyline. It’s winning, compelling, and quite moving with how it tackles individuality in teens. It’s just a great film that takes tropes and turns them on their head by transforming the characters in their own way. Not to give too much away but the talk one of the boys have with the English professor on the rugby field at night is so, so important as an open dialogue.)
4. Dumplin’:  The plus-size, teenage daughter of a former beauty queen signs up for her mum’s pageant as a protest that escalates when other contestants follow in her footsteps, revolutionising the pageant and their small Texas town.
(As you can probably guess this film is an emotionally-impactful conversation about self-acceptance that rides on the back of societal expectations of young women all tied together in a very heart-warming coming-of-age drama. Also there’s loads of Dolly Parton music. What else is there to say)
5. The Lobster:  In a dystopian society, single people must find a mate within 45 days or be transformed into an animal of their choice.
(Isn’t a new watch, but I was reminded of it recently. Just an extended Black Mirror episode, pretty much. It’s odd. It’s bizarre. It’s engaging. It’s a lot of things, and they are great.)
6. Shirkers:  In 1992 teenager Sandi Tan shoots Singapore’s first road movie with her enigmatic American mentor, Georges, who then absconded with all of the footage. The 16 mm film is recovered 20 years later, sending Tan, who is now a novelist living in Los Angeles, on a personal odyssey in search of Georges’ footprints.
(One of my favorite documentaries I’ve seen in a while, mainly because it doesn’t exactly feel like a documentary. It feels like you’re privvy to the incredibly frustrating, disheartening, and determined story of friendship, women-bound creativity, youth, and dishonesty when it comes to the mystery of where and why Georges disappeared. It’s also empowering in a way to see the transition of these young women reclaiming their lives after such betrayal.)
7. Grace & Frankie:  For as long as they can recall, Grace and Frankie have been rivals. Their one-upmanship comes crashing to a halt, however, when they learn that their husbands have fallen in love with each other and want to get married. As everything around the ladies is coming apart, the only thing they can really rely on is each other.
(I’ve been living under a rock, sue me. This show is fanfuckingtastic. Just watch it. Just binge it. Just do it.)
8. Voyeur:  Gay Talese investigates Gerald Foos, a Colorado motel owner who spies on his guests. Using a carefully constructed platform in the motel’s attic, Foos documents his guests most private moments, from the mundane to the shocking.
(Just a frustratingly and horrifyingly sad and strange recollection of two men who act as an incredibly interesting character study if nothing else. Recommend)
9. Some Freaks:  A charming romance develops between a boy with one eye and an overweight girl, though when she loses her weight after going to college, their relationship is tested in devastating ways they never dreamed would happen.
(….. I still don’t know how I feel about this movie. I’ve watched it twice, once alone and once with a friend, and I’m still conflicted on my lasting thoughts about the film and its message. It’s definitely something I suggest watching, at least, to come to your own conclusions about how it made you feel. It’s just. uncomfortable in the strangest of ways, and I just need more people to converse about it with lmao)
10. The Kindergarten Teacher:  A teacher sees such great promise in her 5-year-old student that she goes to unreasonable lengths to protect his talent.
(I watched this film on a whim one day while off from work, and I was pleasantly surprised by its depth and heartbreaking tendencies. This film does not evoke anything but unsettled feelings and yearning for both the young boy and the teacher. Many people tend to gloss over the fact that this film does so much more than its superficial narrative. it opens such a bigger conversation into what absence and neglect of personal creativity and art through someone’s marriage and family can cause them to in-turn have an unhealthy obsession with wanting to keep a child’s love/talent for art alive. Haunting but great film.)
11. Mr. Roosevelt:  A struggling LA-based comedian goes home to Austin, Texas, when a family member becomes ill and finds herself in the awkward position of staying with her ex and his amazing new girlfriend.
(Friend found this hidden-gem on Netflix, and it’s such a quirky, comforting, easy-watch that I miss a lot in indie films. It’s progressive and weird in all the right ways, and it leaves you with a cozy feeling inside once the film reaches its end.)
12. Queer Eye Season 3
(You know the drill just more feel-good reality-television makeover that makes all of us a little bit happier about humanity’s ability to be kind)
13. Happy Anniversary:  On their three-year anniversary, Molly and Sam are at a crossroads and need to decide whether to move forward or call it quits.
(Another hidden gem found on Netflix that I ended up thoroughly enjoying. It comes across as a real, genuine, non-exaggerated look at the inside of a couple’s relationship. It’s candid, fun, witty in dialogue, and heartwarming towards the end. I’ll admit I got a bit misty eyed at 1 AM lol also the dude who plays jean-ralphio is one of the mains so c’mon.)
14. Class Rank:  When her class rank threatens her college plans, an ambitious teen convinces a nerdy peer to run for the school board to abolish the ranking system.
(Listen up, I watched this film because I was under the impression that it was going to be a b-rated teen film I could be amused by, but it ended up being a sorta cute story that I enjoyed a lot more than I probably should’ve RIP. Give it a shot).
15. Cam:  A camgirl has her principles, until a mysterious woman who looks just like her takes over her channel.
(Don’t take the general critic review to heart and watch the film, yourself. It’s. a ride. It definitely gave me chills as much as it made me uncomfortable. A thriller with twists and uneasiness at every corner. Just a real creepy look into AI, especially in industries like the camgirl industry. I do want the girl’s play dungeon tho rip)

Where Were You in the Morning? (Auston Matthews)
A/N: Hey guys! This is just a quick imagine I wrote today to try and get back into writing. Just a reminder, I don’t believe this is how Auston would act personally, as he is just used as a character in my writing, okay? Also, this is loosely inspired by Shawn Mendes’ new song! I highly suggest his new album too! Much love!
Characters: Auston Matthews
Words: 1,504
Warnings: Sexual Content (Brief Descriptive Smut), Language
Tumblr media
You held back a moan and bit your lip as your aching core finally got what it had been begging for. As Auston entered you, the dark haired man above you grunted in pleasure, as your dripping cunt tightened around his throbbing cock.
"Fuck Y/N," he moaned, as he began his rhythmic motion, rocking back and forth to build friction between the both of you. "God, I missed you,"
You let out a breathy sigh and Auston leant down and wrapped his red lips around your plump nipple. Sucking and licking, Auston took turns toying with both of your breasts as he continued to thrust into you. Placing your right hand into his hair and twisting your fingers throughout his soft locks, you rolled your eyes back as your body was overcome with absolute euphoria.
It had been too long.
Looking back, you should've been smarter. You should've caught on and you should've known. It was Auston Matthews after all. But with his good looks and impeccable charm, you were screwed the moment the brown eyed hockey player first laid his eyes on you.
It had just been one hook up. It was in the late weeks of August before he entered into his sophomore year. You had crossed paths and you both so happened to share the same dating/hook-up app, which alerted you both at your fleeting connection.
You honestly at first didn't believe it was him, and you weren't afraid to tell him so. Guys tended to catfish girls with photos of popular athletes, so why wouldn't this experience be any different? Auston had been intrigued by your hesitation, leading him to reel you in day by day. Once you finally believed his identity, thanks to his Snapchat, you slowly got to know the Arizona native. You, self admittedly, were looking for relationship, while Auston had failed to voice his intentions, although you had a pretty good idea. His reputation had done all the talking for him.
So, when he invited you over to his condo the weekend before he left for training camp, you had honestly just expected to hang out, maybe watch a movie or two, and that would be that. You had never been the type of girl to sleep around, but Auston had quickly changed that.
With your pure intentions thrown out the window as quickly as you walked through his front door, Auston had you pinned down in his bed but had also pinned himself onto your heart in the process.
This routine would continue on and off over the season. It would only ever be on Auston's terms though. You'd see him when he wanted to see you, no exceptions. Throughout the year however, you'd also developed a friendship, one where you'd snap back and forth and FaceTime occasionally. You'd vent about school and your mundane life while he'd talk about his road adventures and his stresses that came with being the franchise player of one of the most popular hockey markets in the NHL.
One night however, he had slipped out that he technically had a girlfriend while he was complaining about her attitude while she had been visiting Toronto, causing your heart to completely sink.
"Your girlfriend?" You questioned, your voice sounding surprised. You tried to cover your facial expression the best you could, considering you were FaceTiming.
"Yeah," Auston sighed, as he blew a bubble from his chewing gum before it popped loudly, "Jordyn can be a real pain in my ass sometimes," he proclaimed before taking a long sigh.
"Amen to that!" You heard his roommate echo in the background.
"I see," you muttered, as you began to play with your hair, trying to busy yourself as your mind raced with all this new information.
"Yeah, don't worry about it though, it's nothing too serious. She just uses me when she wants me, and vice versa, it's far from commited, y'know?"
You nodded towards the screen and smiled slightly, but you were suddenly filled with disappointment and feelings of dread. You were saddened by Auston's attitude towards his relationship.
"That's why I love talking to you so much babe, because I know you're only talking to me because you want to, not because you want something," Auston explained before sending you a grin.
Although he didn't notice, you had mentally decided to distance yourself from Auston after that moment, as you had never ever wanted to be one of those girls. You refused to assist in his cheating and playboy behaviour.
Months passed, with your communication slowly transitioning from minimal to rare, to complete radio silence. Sure, you'd trade snaps every once and a while but there wouldn't be any context. Usually they were just photos of where he was playing or the occasional selfie when he claimed he was lonely or bored. You never answered those.
But once his season ended, you felt obligated to send him at least a text, letting him know you had been thinking of him and that you wanted to wish him well during his offseason. That had been strike one.
You had let him back into your life and you went back to communicating like how you'd been back before you'd found out about Jordyn. You'd also done some digging and found out the two had finally ended their tumultuous relationship.
Strike two was when you agreed to meet up with him for drinks on a warm May night in Toronto before he departed for Arizona. You had thought nothing of it, as you figured he had wanted to catch up and say goodbye.
But after a long night of laughs and good conversation, he had you yet again. You were screwed when Auston pressed his lips against your forehead in goodbye, and you quickly grabbed his hand before he could walk away, not waning your night to end. When he looked towards you with a playful gleam in his eye, you asked him if he wanted to visit your place before he returned to his condo. His smirk said it all.
Strike three was when you let his hands roam your body and allowed Auston to kiss you passionately like he had first done almost a year go. Dragging you into your bedroom, your clothes were quickly discarded as Auston's lips roamed every inch of your skin.
Fast forward to now, you found yourself cuddled into Auston's tight, sweaty chest as he drew circles on your bare back. You were exhausted, your legs felt like jelly, and your heart was warm, filled with content. The sex had been great, better than you could remember your first time with him being, but there was something else there.
Pressing his lips against the crown of your head, you sighed and nuzzled yourself further into Auston's embrace, as his arms tightened around you.
"You can go to sleep babe," Auston spoke quietly, as he could sense your exhaustion.
"But what about you?" You questioned, sitting up slightly. You didn't want to be rude and you wanted to make sure he could leave your place okay.
"I'll be here when you wake up," Auston promised, and you smiled at the thought. Auston had never once stayed over, which have you hope that maybe this time, your interaction was different.
Leaning down, Auston captured your lips in a slow kiss, caressing your cheek as his pulled you down back into his arms. It didn't take long for you to fall into a blissful sleep.
But when you woke up to an empty bed, your heart sunk. Hoping Auston might be in your kitchen or something, you quickly hopped out of bed and jogged down your hallway. You frowned when you realized that wasn't the case.
Auston's shoes, along with his clothes and belongings were all gone, leading you to gather he had actually left. Had he even bothered staying over night?
You sighed and padded back into your room. Picking your phone up off your nightstand, you grimaced as you saw Auston hadn't even messaged you. Deciding to send him a text, your pursed your lips when your messaged couldn't be delivered. After trying twice more, you gave up and decided to snap him. It then dawned on you what had happened when his username was no longer available in your contacts.
You gulped.
He'd gotten what he wanted, and now he no longer needed you. You'd given him exactly what he wanted without at fight. Feeling your chest contract, you firmed your lips together as you collapsed onto your mattress. Tears leaked down your cheeks as you realized you had just become another one of those girls.
You were just another notch in Auston Matthew's bed frame. You were just another kill. Your name was just yet another to add to his growing list of conquests, but now you knew it was over. Auston had given you one last hurrah before he finally said goodbye, leaving you in a mess you weren’t even sure how to clean up.

Gundham's sacrifice in chapter 4. ... Does that count?
Send Me A Topic To Write Meta On // always accepting
Heck yeah this counts. Gundham makes a close second favourite for me out of the DR2 cast, funnily enough for many of the same reasons Nagito is my first favourite. Anyway, there’s a lot to unpack in this trial, so I want to start with my favourite line, for it’s astounding poignancy. Which, believe it or not, was said by Akane of all people:
Why do I like this line so much? Allow me to defer to Kodaka himself - because who better to synopsize a character than his own creator? - back in 2015, when he referred to Gundham as: “(…)a young person who is in their own world and thinks they’re super-cool and live in this fantasy world.” That is, in a lot of ways, the essence of Gundham Tanaka. The world of Danganronpa is already fantastical as it is, so to have a character who makes it more so elevates the whole series to another level just by being.
But there’s a dark side to this, too. Gundham comes across as a confidant guy due to his apparent lack of shame about speaking the way he does, and displaying himself as essentially a performative work of art. He’s shown repeatedly to be aware that his presentation of the world isn’t entirely literal (my evidence: the dozen or so times he drops his grandeur to remark how something is “a good line”, or to correct his own wording), and to be capable of talking matter-of-factly. Yet, he simply won’t. Even though he comes across as confidant, it’s pretty clear he’s not. For someone who can yell about different dimensions and the gates of hell without flinching, he struggles to state even his simplest desires aloud, instead hiding behind his persona:
(This scene has nothing to do directly with the chapter 4 trial but bear with me, I’m getting to it. Also…I just like it a lot, okay.)
That’s not to say Gundham’s overlord persona is entirely superfluous. We see multiple times how he applies it to reality, creatively blurring the lines so that sometimes people struggle to understand what he’s even saying, or if he’s saying anything at all. For instance, when he explains that he would be regularly “poisoned”, only for the literal truth to turn out as banal as his mother being a terrible cook. But this, in turn, feeds the idea that his body is filled with poison, which serves as a convenient way to avoid direct contact with others. I’ve talked about this before, but Gundham has a remarkable natural creative talent. He outright says at one point that no one ever bought him a toy - and this isn’t to say that children need expensive toys in order to have a creative side, but there’s no denying that, in young children, certain types of play are vital to develop certain physical, social and creative skills. That’s why particular toys are geared towards particular age groups, to nurture the right skills that children ought to be developing at that time. Gundham is capable of quickly and cleanly drawing complicated symbols in the sand (which is no easy feat, rest assured); and at a pinch, he can come up with the wildest twists on the most mundane, everyday occurrences. That’s actually kind of amazing.
Also while we’re on the subject, here are a few other implied or explicitly stated things about Gundham: he grew up poor, cares deeply for his mother, doesn’t seem to have a relationship with his father (or at least not one he’s willing to talk about - but he does refer to himself as the offspring of an angel and demon, and since he adores his mother, it’s no leap to assume who is who and what that might imply), isn’t really close with anyone except his animals, and he does seem to want to get along with his classmates but doesn’t know how to approach it.
This is all going somewhere, I swear, because this all comes back to what Akane said. He uses weird words to avoid the truth. Or at least, turn the truth into something tolerable. Rather than be a poor kid with a terrible father and zero social skills, he can be a powerful overlord with unlimited influence and all those crappy things about his life are just side effects of this wondrous existence. No wonder he thinks he’s pretty damn cool. I think he’s pretty damn cool. But it also lets him internalise a lot of his own self-doubt and loathing, turning even it into something worth beholding. (That is to say: he always refers to himself in terms that would be applied to a villain; taboo king, supreme overlord of ice, etc.) It gives a convenient explanation to his inability to connect with others, despite so clearly wanting to. It keeps him sheltered from the possibility of rejection, betrayal, and any of the myriad of terrible things human beings do to each other. And he gets to look good doing it.
I’m glad, Anon, that you referred to the trial as his “sacrifice”, because that indeed is what it was. Hajime guesses as much, and even though Gundham brushes it off, it’s certainly the truth. He as good as says it in this very trial:
See also:
Even after he is found out, Gundham doesn’t drop his persona for a single second. It’s not surprising, since we’ve established already how heavily he leans on it to maintain any sense of emotional stability in what appears to be a very unstable life. It’s very important to him that the others understand that he did indeed battle Nekomaru. But I have a secondary theory too, and it comes from this line and other like it:
(Gundham, your Nagito is showing.) He’s about to die in the most uniquely terrifying way to him. After having seen three others fall before him in horrific executions, I’m certain Gundham is, deep down, terrified. Even if he can somehow suppress his fear of death, he knows it’s going to be a horrible, brutal one in whatever way will hurt him most. I refuse to believe he’s not petrified, yet he boasts of a great battle and  actively encourages his classmates to put him to death. Maybe it’s the optimist in me, but I can’t read this any way other than that he’s attempting to alleviate their guilt. He’s already assisted in putting three of their classmates to death, and that’s no easy thing. That’s part of what makes the killing game so traumatising. Whether he was killed in that battle with Nekomaru or not, he’d ultimately die either way, but at least he saved the others. The others who, this whole time, he wanted to be one of but never could. But even now, his concern is not for himself. What are his final moments spent on before going to his horrible death?
Yeah. This guy. If you listen to the audio, his voice just goes so soft, too. And he doesn’t waver a bit in his resolve. He walks into his execution with his head held high, maintains his persona to the last, and for someone who constantly paints himself as a villain, he goes out like a hero.
In case it wasn’t obvious by now, I love Gundham a lot.

SH 319: Aku Cinta Kamu
I really enjoyed this episode and there were some really great moments, but there were a couple of things that I didn’t like too. I am enjoying dark Clary and the Team Evil dynamic is fun to watch; Sizzy is continuing to develop; Izzy is a weaponry badass; and Magnus is absolutely breaking my heart. Asmodeus is a fantastically complex character, Jack Yang is awesome, and he is one of the best villains.
However, I do wish that they had chosen a different episode title; we all got so excited because we knew (even non-book readers) that Aku Cinta Kamu was a Malec quote so we had high expectations for Malec scenes in this episode. We were disappointed because all the Malec scenes were flashbacks (even if they were amazing ones) and there was barely any Alec at all. I think it would have been better if the episode title had been something like ‘Glorious’ instead.
Tumblr media
We begin the episode with Magnus walking alone down a deserted street, we presume that it must be about 5/6am in the morning; 318 took place during one night with the break up being around (I presume) 4am, just before sunrise, so it has probably been about 2 hours since then.
What hurts so much about him walking around New York like this is the fact that it’s because he literally has nowhere to go. He lost his home, he doesn’t want to burden Catarina who is sole guardian of Madzie and he can’t go back to the Institute; he feels so completely alone because there is no one there for him and there is nowhere for him to go.
Despite his loneliness right now he is still completely wary of Asmodeus and his intentions, he knows that Asmodeus only does things for his own gain and he doesn’t want to be around his toxic influence.
Asmodeus gives Magnus his magic back; I know that some people were a little disappointed with how Magnus got his magic back. I completely understand wanting Magnus to have been able to love and accept himself, to see the amazing things about himself without magic before he got it back. For him to have that journey of self discovery and acceptance; to learn something from it. But I also understand how it happened, it was completely Asmodeus using everything he could to manipulate Magnus into a vulnerable and more receptive state; to take his magic which pulled him into depression and then to force away the man he loves in order to leave him vulnerable enough to let Asmodeus back in. It was about getting Magnus into a similar state as he was when he was a child.
Harry’s acting in this moment is impeccable; you can see the happiness and relief on Magnus’ face to have his magic back, to have this part of his identity restored. But that morphs into distrust because he knows that Asmodeus never does anything for free and is scared of the consequences.
I think Asmodeus is a very intriguing character because he does seem to love Magnus in his own twisted way, a possessive kind of love. We have seen this with Lilith, they want that person to love them and only them; it is reinforced with the language they use, they hardly ever use their child’s name instead saying ‘my son’ or ‘my boy’. They refer to them in a possessive way, to call them in the way that refers to their connection to them instead of their name which infers independency.
When Alec arrives back at the Institute Izzy asks if everything is okay because she knows about the deal Asmodeus offered him; you can tell that Alec has fallen into his habit of pushing his emotions to the side and being a soldier. He has closed his emotions off and is concentrating on his job; this is his way of coping because he knows that with everything going on he doesn’t have time to be able to mourn his relationship. Plus, he is trying to avoid feeling the sadness, guilt and utter devastation by concentrating on other things.
I think that Jonathan’s reaction to Jace’s note is very interesting, he wants Clary all to himself and wants Clary to love only him; it is very similar to Lilith and Asmodeus. He wants to be the only person Clary loves and constantly reaffirms his ‘claim’ on her by calling her ‘little sister’ instead of her name, though he does use her name occasionally. This makes sense because this is how he was taught to love.
Magnus sees a couple holding hands which triggers a flashback in which Alec takes Magnus to a place in New York where couple attach locks. I really loved this scene, Alec’s excitement about wanting a lock for him and Magnus; it seems partly because he wants to experience things other couples do and partly because he wants to show Magnus and the world how permanent their love is.
It is a really beautiful moment between the two of them, once again showing us these little moments in their relationship that show just how much they care about each other. My heart breaks when Magnus destroys the lock, it is done out of hurt because they attached that lock as a sign of their eternal love but that promise has been broken; he can’t bear to see this token of love that seems false to him in that moment.
You can see that hurt and anger turn to devastation as the lock disintegrates as he realises not only what he’s done but also that the break up seems even more final. It is a visual representation of what has happened to their relationship.
I have said many times that I don’t like Jordan and explained why so I am not going to go over that again; my issue with this scene is that they kiss. With their past it was just really uncomfortable to watch and I think that them going into kiss and then Maia turning at the last second so he kissed her cheek instead would have not only worked better but would have been less uncomfortable (and maybe upsetting for those who are really affected by this storyline).
I like that Jace seems to be more active in starting conversations with Alec regarding his feelings and his relationship, in previous seasons it has felt very one sided. He is completely confused as to why Magnus and Alec have broken up; especially knowing that Alec was planning to propose. He knows how happy Magnus makes Alec and that they have a strong relationship so he doesn’t understand why this has happened and is trying to get Alec to open up to him.
Alec is trying everything to avoid talking about it, you can see him start to get choked up and upset as the conversation progresses. He can’t afford to let his emotions out right now because if he does he will break; he feels like everyone is depending on his with being the Head of the Institute and the added pressure of getting Clary back.
Jace convinces Clary to let him come with them by using the truth to cover his deception; he uses his true love and dedication to her as a guise. I quite like dark Clary, she is very intriguing and will not allow Jonathan to control her; in fact Jonathan is very deferring to her, and it’s an interesting dynamic.
The flashback of Malec getting ice cream with Madzie was very sweet, and my heart both soared and broke when they starting talking about having kids; inferring that they intended to have a family together one day. We know how much family means to Magnus, the Downworlders he takes in become his family and he will protect them with everything he has. Plus, as far as we understand no one has wanted to have a family with him before, just like no one has wanted to marry him, and you can only imagine how much it meant to him to hear someone say that they saw children in their future.
I really like Raphael, he admits his mistakes and accepts the consequences; it is really nice to see how happy he is now that he is mundane. It also warms my heart to hear about him being able to attend morning Mass and plant flowers on Rosa’s grave.
I understand why he has gone to see Maia, he feels responsible for Heidi, but I am a little confused as to why he hasn’t sought out Magnus. Magnus is like a father to him, they have a strong bond, yet they have had no scenes together this season despite everything that has happened to them.
Simon is scared of needles (I relate) but Izzy distracts him by talking about Superman; I think that this is a very sweet scene for them. Bonding more over these films and Izzy accepting that she is seeing Simon in a different light now, all this time she has seen him as a great friend but now she see’s all the attributes in him that she identifies with (doing whatever it takes to help those you love) and the potential of a romantic relationship.
I saw that some people didn’t like it because of the implied toxic masculinity related to the attractive woman liking nerdy guy with glasses after finding out he’s a superhero; I understand that and it is true of a lot of older films that are steeped in sexism, stereotypes and clichés.
But, personally, I don’t think the scene itself was problematic; I just think they were using the Superman film to further establish that they are seeing each other in different lights now that they have been spending more time together and seeing these different sides of each other.
Outside the club Jace is trying to get through to Clary by stating how much he loves her, it seems very familiar to how Clary would try to get through to Jace when he was the Owl but it doesn’t work. It seems to me that the Twinning Rune works more like creating a second personality than possession, it’s as if this is who Clary would have been if she had been raised by Valentine. It’s very interesting but I wish we knew for definite more about how the rune worked.
The flashback montage to the song ‘Signals’ by Frey Ridings is heartbreaking because it takes you on a very condensed version of the Malec story which is very emotional; one thing I do wish though is that they had included little moments from scenes we know had been cut, such as the extended balcony scene from 207 or the hug at the end of 212. Plus in the middle of the scene when we see present time Magnus there is a very awkward and unnecessary zoom into his face, really wish they hadn’t done that and just the next time they cut back to him it was a closer shot.
I really like learning more about Magnus and Brother Zachariah’s friendship, I love that to Zachariah this conversation was important enough for him to break his vow of silence. That really shows just how important Magnus is to him.
We get another confirmation that for Magnus Alec is different than everyone he has been in a relationship with before, this has been stated or hinted at several times since they met but unfortunately Alec doesn’t seem to get the memo. Magnus has lived with the memories of the people he loved and lost for centuries but he can’t bear his memories with Alec; this was a person who opened his heart after decades of being closed off, who has shown him unconditional love and acceptance, who has been there for him during his darkest times, who has loved him despite the prejudices of his community and who he saw himself having a family with.
Zachariah refuses to take his memories because he knows Magnus will regret it, no matter how much he is hurting right now Alec is a part of him, has changed him and removing all of that would not help Magnus, it would simply return him to a closed off state and Zachariah doesn’t want that for him.
Maia and Jordan go to the Institute very upset about the fact that the serum has been destroyed, it is understandable because they were hoping that they could have a second chance at a mundane life. You can see Simon’s frustration beginning to mount because they cannot understand how difficult the situation was and how quickly they had to act in order to stop Aldertree and anyone who may have been loyal to him.
He tells them he understands wanting to go back, with everything that he has done and has happened to him he wishes more than anything that he could go back to a mundane life but saving the masses from non-consensual neutralisation was more important. Plus, using the last few vials to stop Jonathan, who is a threat to everyone, is more important than giving them to their friends.
The Bone Chandelier is a great set, Clary’s shocked face that the bones were from Shadowhunters kinda makes me laugh a little because it is no different than how Shadowhunters used to take Downworlder marks as trophies.
I really did not like the scene that follows because Jace is pressured into taking an unknown substance, which we know is probably a hallucinogenic because it’s a Seelie drug; we know that Jonathan is trying to get Jace to slip up so he can prove his disloyalty to Clary but pressuring someone to take drugs is always going to be uncomfortable.
The entire make out scene is really uncomfortable for me because it is non-consensual, in my opinion. Jace is, unwillingly, under the influence of perception altering drugs and you can see that his initial demeanour is confused and slightly resistant; so from Jace’s perspective it is definitely non-consensual. With Clary, she is also under the influence of drugs and she is currently a different person than usual, so we are not sure how much consent she can give in this state (which is why I think the rune needed more explanation). Even her line about Jace being able to say no made me uncomfortable because it was followed with ‘But you won’t’ which implies the lack of ability to refuse.
I feel bad because I know that this was from the books but for me it was so uncomfortable because the situation feels very non-consensual.
I know that the purpose was for Jace to lose concentration and for Jonathan to see the ring, but the hole in that is that Jace should have taken off the ring because he knew he had ingested drugs and I am sure they could have done it in a way that was more consensual. Maybe if it was a less powerful drug, or a non-hallucinogenic, or if Jace seemed more into it, or if Clary’s line was worded differently; I don’t know, but I just don’t like the scene how it is.
I really like that Maia took the time to think about what Simon said, she is a very mature and compassionate person; she knows that she is not the only person whose life has been destroyed by becoming a Downworlder. She knows that she doesn’t deserve it more than anyone else and that to demand it would be wrong. I love Maia so much.
Jordan on the other hand has stolen the vial; I had a gut instinct that he was going to steal it. My only problem is how, the vial was in the room with Izzy and Simon, it is a big vial so is not easy to quickly conceal and how did they not notice it was missing? Anyway, since Jordan heard about the serum he has been single minded in getting his hands on it; to me it seems very selfish in thinking that all his problems started with becoming a werewolf and that by becoming mundane again it fixes that. I may be wrong, we’ll have to wait and see.
I adore Izzy! I loved seeing the weapons master side of her, and seeing the scientist in her these past few episodes; it was amazing to see her create a new Glorious.
The fight scene in the club was well choreographed and it was a good scene; it was nice to see Clary and Jace fighting side by side again too. However, I do think that it was way too easy for Jonathan to grab the Seelie Queen, after all this time of her being built up as this powerful and untouchable character he only needed to take out one knight in less than a minute and grab her. I did see the footage of Luke dislocating his shoulder in this scene though, and that looked really painful.
After they finish fighting the Seelies Clary turns on Jace, she is clearly angry and upset that he has betrayed her trust and is trying to separate her from Jonathan. This moment is a real testimony to just how different Clary is right now, although her conviction to fight for those she cares about (that being Jonathan right now) is very Clary. Again, I just wish we knew more about how the rune worked so that we could understand its influence and Clary’s state right now.
I must say that I laughed out loud at Jace sliding along the Institute floor; it was just so comical even though it wasn’t meant to be. I really feel for Jace because you can see the devastation and almost loss of hope on his face. He can’t recognise the person Clary is right now and in that moment he feels at a loss of how to help; he feels like he has lost her all over again.
I do really feel sympathy for him because he had to suffer through thinking she had died and that he was part of the reason why; then the happiness of getting her back; watching her battle the rune’s influence over her; and now watching her become this completely different person than he knows. She is the first and only person in his life he has loved this much and to keep losing her must be absolutely soul crushing.
Watching Magnus pull his memories of Alec from his mind you can see how much they are torturing him, he cannot bear the loss of him; he loves Alec so much. Also Alec is the first person who thought his eyes were beautiful, knew who his father was and didn’t care, who he told his dark past to and he accepted. Alec has been different in so many ways and he loves him so much; to have Alec walk away from him is tearing him apart.
Asmodeus is the one to stop Magnus from destroying the memories; he wants Magnus to remember the pain that Alec caused him, he wants to use that pain to manipulate Magnus. If Magnus forgets Alec than he will no longer be in an emotionally vulnerable place and it would be much harder for Asmodeus to get back into his life. Magnus is upset and confused as to why Asmodeus is persisting; he knows that Asmodeus never truly cared about him and is trying to remind both of them of that.
Asmodeus tells Magnus to keep the memories to make him stronger and wiser; Magnus keeps the memories I think partially because of what both Zachariah and Asmodeus said, but also because looking at them there is a part of him that can’t let Alec go.
Harry’s acting in this scene is absolutely amazing, especially considering he had nothing to react to; he generated emotion purely from his imagination. He blows me away every time he performs an emotional scene like this, he is always fantastic but these emotional scenes really get me.
Magnus allows Asmodeus to comfort him, this is understandable because he is so upset and vulnerable right now that he needs comfort and support and right now Asmodeus is the only person offering that to him. Asmodeus’ smirk sends shivers down your spine because you know that his intentions are anything but good but he is such a great villain.
I know that some people were disappointed and annoyed that Magnus did not figure out the connection between Alec leaving him and Asmodeus turning up. But Magnus is completely blinded by his emotions right now and can’t think logically; all his feelings from losing his magic and the trauma surrounding that don’t just disappear when he gets it back, it is going to take time to work through those emotions still. Plus, he is swamped with the disbelief, anger, hurt, confusion and devastation of Alec leaving him; which is a continuous onslaught, whirlwind and swinging between anger and hurt with all the flashbacks he is experiencing.
Also, not only did he lose his relationship but he also lost his support system. After losing his magic (his job and his home) Alec has been the only person who has consistently been there to support him, no one else (Catarina, Raphael, Izzy, Simon, Clary, Jace) has made the effort to reach out to him.
The person he loves is gone, his support system, he has nowhere to live; right now the only person in the world who is actively seeking him out to offer support is Asmodeus. He is at his absolutely lowest right now, completely emotionally destroyed and vulnerable; he needs someone now more than ever and the only person there is Asmodeus. It’s no surprise that Magnus takes whatever support and comfort he can get.
Plus, although their relationship ended badly Asmodeus is still his father; he is still the person who took him in when he was a child and had no one else. Asmodeus was the only person who would help him as a child and he is the only person offering him help now.
I know that some people were also wondering why Magnus did not go back to Alec once he regained his magic; the answer is simple, would you? Alec confirmed Magnus’ greatest insecurity by saying that everything that is special about him came from his magic (that spark inside you was out for good). Alec left him when he was at his emotional lowest, saying that Magnus was too much for him to handle; another insecurity of Magnus’, that he is ‘too much’ for people. Why would he go back to someone who doesn’t want him?
To say it in real world terms; if you were very wealthy but suddenly lost everything and then your partner left you, would you call them to come back if you suddenly regained your wealth? No because that person left you when you had nothing, if they don’t deem you worth their time when you have nothing why do they deserve you when you regain everything?
This is why I think that Malec getting back together is going to be complicated and perhaps a bit messy. I do want them to get back together, of course I do, especially with there only being three episodes left (at the moment. #SaveShadowhunters!). But I think that the issues surrounding the break up are too important to just gloss over or forget about.
Even though Alec made the deal for Magnus’ happiness he still made a major life decision without Magnus’ knowledge or consent. They definitely need to have a conversation about this because although Magnus will understand Alec only wanted to make him happy, he still made a huge decision about Magnus’ life for him. Plus, it was a decision that left Magnus feeling at rock bottom, abandoned and unloved when he was at his most vulnerable.
I am not trying to hate on Alec at all, I love him and I understand why he made the deal; he wanted to make Magnus happy and he thought it was the only way to help him. His own insecurities about his importance, both in Magnus’ life and in general, made him believe Magnus would recover from losing him.
Plus, there is the fact that Alec worded the break up to use Magnus’ insecurities against him. This is such a complex situation and the definitely need to talk about it in order to learn, recover and move forward.
I really liked this episode, but I definitely has issues with the Maia/Jordan scene and the Clace makeout.
I loved Izzy being an absolute weaponry badass, the Sizzy bonding and Magnus’ journey was incredibly painful.
In 320, Clary and Jonathan continue their quest to get Morningstar, a battle is coming up in Idris and Asmodeus is definitely planning something. I’m really looking forward to the 3B season finale (I know there is 321 and 322 but this is the 3B finale).
Also, in the promo is looks like Magnus is back in his apartment and it will be interesting to find out how that happens but I hope that it isn’t because of Asmodeus because that will solidify Lorenzo’s belief about Magnus’ power coming from his father.
Plus, it looks like Magnus is attacking Asmodeus; whether this is because he learns about the deal or because of Asmodeus’ plans remains to be seen.
Who’s excited?
