“I’m coming in, dude. I know you’re isolating yourself. It’s okay if you want to be alone, but it’s really unsafe to leave hot food outside of the FDA-recommended food safety zone and I don’t want to give you food poisoning…”

With a jingle of his keys and a bit of a push against the door, Julian stumbled into Finn’s apartment and nearly tripped over a ficus resting by the front door. “Seriously, man? You hired Meryl as your bouncer?” he joked, his face and tone falling immediately as he laid eyes on Finn curled up on the couch a few feet from him. As Carroway Street’s resident Mom Friend and Frequent Haver of Anxiety Attacks, Julian registered the look on Finn’s face instantly. He could tell this wasn’t just isolation for the sake of it – something had triggered him and he clearly needed someone to help.

Without wasting a moment, Julian placed the lasagna he’d brought in the fridge and grabbed Finn’s guitar from the corner of the living room. In one swift movement, he made his way over to the dejected boy and crouched down in front of him. “Hey, buddy. It’s going to be okay. You’re safe. I promise you’re safe,” he stated softly, using the same gentle tone his mom had used with him during his worst bouts of PTSD.

Prying Finn’s hands from his face, Julian gently placed the small succulent he’d brought with him in Finn’s palm. “Here. Hold this. It’s a rainbow echeveria succulent. I saw it at the farmer’s market and thought of you.” Keeping his eyes glued on Finn, he held the other boy’s hands firmly around the succulent and gently rubbed his thumb over his tear-soaked skin. “You just hold onto Rainey, okay? That’s all I need you to do right now. You do that and I’m proud of you. What’s a song that always helps cheer you up? Pick a song. Any song. Or I’ll be forced to pick one for you.”
