The team files into the conference room, settling into their usual seats. When Price closes the door, he turns to find three questioning looks.

"We're not all 'ere, Cap," Ghost says, flicking pointedly at the seat you occupied last time.

"I know," Price says calmly. "This is a conversation we needed ta 'ave without Ren," he tells them.

"Without... Captain, is something wrong? Where's Ren?" Gaz asks.

"She's in medical," he says. Soap is confused, spluttering, and Ghost is half out of his seat when Price infuses his voice with his Captain's authority and says, "Stop!" The scent of aggression simmers as Ghost sits back down.

"I need ya all," his gaze cuts to Ghost, "ta listen and not react," he stares at Soap. "If we want even the slightest chance of havin' Ren as our omega, ya will listen." He looks around the room, taking in Gaz's serious look, Soap's apprehension, and Ghost's skepticism. The heavy scents of worry and barely restrained anger are cloying in the small space. "Ren came ta me last night. Her heat was starting, an' she wan'ed clearance ta pass it under medical sedation, what she felt was the safest way available ta her."

Soap cuts in, "We're safer than whatever's gonna happen tae her at medical!"

Price raises an eyebrow but doesn't respond to the outburst. "She's not pack, yet, Soap," Price says.

Ghost slams a hand down on the table, "An' whose fault is that?!"

Price turns to glare at his second. "Enough." The command is pure Alpha, and even Ghost can't just ignore his pack alpha's command. He is sat sullenly, arms crossed. "I had no right to push her to take her heat with us. She wasn't asking for it, and she felt medical sedation was better than a heat service."

He let his words settle on the others. From the spike of rotting fish, Soap's distress is clear. Price looks at Ghost and tells the lieutenant, "I told 'er we needed ta address bein' pack when 'er heat's done."

Ghost visibly settles, and Gaz says, "So ta be clear, we're gonna ask Ren ta be our omega? Officially?"

"Yes," Price replies unequivocally. "And we're here," he says, hand circling the table, "to draw up a courtin' contract that shows 'er we're serious about it." The scents in the room level out, bitterness and rot receding, replaced with the scent of fresh linen, salt, and greenery. Once it's clear everyone is on the same page, Price presses the intercom, and Adam's voice comes through.

"Yes, sir?"

"Adam, be a lad an' get Ren's parents on the line, yeah?"

There's no mistaking the teasing lilt to Adam's voice when he responds, "Shall I tell them why you're calling, sir?"

Price doesn't rise to the bait. "Patch 'em through when you got 'em." Then he cuts the intercom, turning back to the others. "I think we all agree pushin' Ren at all is gonna send her running, so we need ta be strategic. She told me, before the London job, she uses blockers because it's tiring ta constantly control her scent without 'em, so we can't make 'er stop-" Soap cuts in with a whiney "Och, Cap! But-", before Price raises his voice over the sergeant's complaints, "-no matter how much we want that fresh berry scent."

He takes pity on Soap and says, "We can ask she use patches and a non-scent deodorant instead."

Soap huffs out a barely audible, "Guess tha's better than nothing'."

"Like us," Price motions between himself and Ghost, "Ren's not on suppressants, so ensuring she's got space for a nest in the Lake house is a must." The scents in the room sharpen as each man thinks about your next heat. The one where, if this courting works, they'll help you through instead of the travesty of a medically sedated one.

Price takes a moment to compose himself, but before he can continue, the intercom on the table crackles with Adam's voice. "Ren's parents are on line three, Captain. Do you need me to come connect the call?"

"I'll handle it, Adam. Thanks," Price says, disconnecting the intercom. His gaze flicks to Gaz and he waves his hand at the phone. "Can ya get her parents?"

Gaz moves to the phone and presses a few buttons, then the tense voice of your mama warbles through. "Hello?"

"Hullo, ma'am. I'm Captain Price-"

A sharp inhale at his name, and then Mama's voice cuts him off. "You're calling from base, but the other gentleman didn't say why. What's happened to my girl, Captain?" Gone is the warble, replaced by fear and steel.

"Ma'am, she's fine," Price quickly assures. "She's safe and healthy."

There's a slow breath on the other side. "Okay, Captain. If that's the case, if she's safe, and she's not calling me, this is about her being your omega, isn't it?"

Ghost chuckles, mutters, "Can see where she gets it."

Another voice, Mum's, comes over the line. "Gets what?" she asks sharply.

Price clears his throat. "Pardon us, ma'am and ma'am. It seems I made a right mess of things. My name is John Price, Captain of the 141 and the pack alpha. I'm here with Lieutenant Simon Riley, and Sergeants Kyle Garrick and John MacTavish." Each man says hello as he's introduced, helping your parents discern one voice from the next. "We're Ren's team. An' yer right, we wanna be 'er pack, too, if she'll have us."

"Well, if you're calling to ask for our permission to court her-" Mama starts, before she's cut off by Ghost's chuckle.

Price smirks as he says, "Ma'am, we all know yer daughter doesn't wait fer permission ta do things. And if she thought we'd asked ya fer it first, that'd be the end 'fore we even began."

Your dad's voice joins the mix as he says, "Sounds like ya have the measure of our girl, Captain. And you must know we've got a full house here, so why don't you get to why you called."

Though your parents couldn't see it, Price stood straighter. "Yes, sir. I, we, were callin' because we don't want things goin' pear shaped. We were workin' on a courtin' contract-"

"A courting contract," Mum says, half shocked, half amused. "That's too old fashioned, Captain."

"I can see where it seems that way, ma'am, but with military packs, it's a necessity ta protect all parties," Gaz chimes in pragmatically.

"Not-" Soap cuts in quickly, "-tha' we need need protectin' from Ren or this decision, mum. We're sure this is wha' we want. She is wha' we want."

"My men have the way of it. The military requires a courtin' contract fer any military or military-affiliated pack. It's ta make sure the military bit keeps runnin' smoothly no matter wha'," Price says.

Mama's voice comes through again, "So what is it you need from us, if you're not asking for permission?"

Price takes a deep breath, and when he speaks, his voice is guarded, almost weary, as if one wrong word will end their attempt before it's even started. "We know a lot, and have figured more, about what she needs from a pack, not as an omega, but as she is. But it's clear she 'as reservations about being pack at all. Do ya have any advice or suggestion about wha' we could say?"

Your dad's sigh comes through the line, weighed down and weary, sad. "Captain, I wish we had better news. She's fought her secondary designation for so long, always clawing for every little achievement, every little advancement, every scrap of recognition. Been that way since she was little, even before she presented. Being clever and sporty didn't serve her well as a girl, and when it was clear she was an omega, it raised the bars even higher. No one in her adult life, until you, ever really saw her first." They can hear the smile in his voice when he tells them, "She was right pleased when you put her name up for the boards." He sighs again, and the men hold their collective breaths. "She's so close, Captain. We could tell when she was home. She wants a pack of her own, even if she hasn't said it. Your best bet is to show her you'll still see her and not just her omega."

⌞♥⌝ Next time, I'd like to kindly ask that you read the pinned post and include the secret phrase. But because I get this question asked a lot, I'll answer it now.

I personally don't think Ren is a soft yandere by any means (barring when it comes to Angel), but I do think the reason why most people view him as such is because I barely receive any yandere-esque questions on Tumblr anymore, which has lead to this somewhat sanitised outlook on Ren ^^;

I typically receive very standard, mundane, and HR-appropriate asks (/pos, /nm) that don't encroach on that territory, so Ren's overall characterisation tends to end up being watered down into "generic, overly supportive boyfriend who's secretly obsessed with you". And while I genuinely have nothing against these family-friendly asks, they also don't really give me much room to talk about Ren in a more... morbid sense jhgjhsg

It's difficult for me to turn "How would Ren react to Angel owning a pet worm?", "Does Ren know how to make spaghetti?", "Can Ren play the saxophone?", etc, into something darker than it needs to be, but I also don't want to discourage folks from sending in these kinds of questions either. I know they're just curious and want to have their headcanons acknowledged, and again, I have nothing against these types of asks.

They're definitely fun to answer (/gen), but they just... don't give me much opportunity to take it a step further ;v;

Also! I'd like folks to be more aware of the fact that Ren is literally trying to come across like a normal person in the game, so I can't exactly showcase how far he's willing to take things without portraying him incorrectly or spoiling something. I know this is somewhat of a double-edged sword, but I've always been open to answering "what if" scenarios that take place in an AU/non-canon setting (such as how Ren would react if Angel wanted to partake in his Red Room activities).

Anyways!! Enough of that >:3 You also asked about how [REDACTED] came about, and it's literally just the placeholder text Ren uses during the library scene in day 1 to hide his real name from the player!

Folks started speculating that it was Ren's real identity slipping through, so they started referring to him as "[REDACTED]". It's also my way of differentiating between Ren and [REDACTED] without having to reveal his real name.

Sakura was never good with affection. This was his first relationship amd everyone knew that. Even after some time in the relationship, even after you showed him what affection is, he still couldn't handle it without blushing like crazy. But he admits, it felt nice, bot that he'll ever say it. The problem is tho, how does he asks for affection?

"Hm? What is it Haru?" You look over at Sakura, who's staying right in front of you at the moment. His arms spread out just for you to fit against his body. He thinks it's obvious, that's how you hug...right? You hugged him a lot of times, that's how you do it. So why are you not getting it?

You look at his confused and flustered face and can't hold back a chuckle anymore. You step a few steps closer to him and just press your self against him, arm wrapping around his neck and resting on his shoulders.

He freezes for a moment, then slowly wraps his slightly shaky arms you. It feels...nice- he thinks.

"You know you can just ask me when you want a hug, right?" ".... I don't know how to.. especially if we're in front of someone.." You thought for a moment. Yeah, Sakura can barely hear the word kiss without blushing like crazy, then an idea pops in your mind. "Then give me some kind of signal. Whatever you feel like will grab my attention so that i know, that way you won't have to say anything."

From then on, every time he felt clingy, he tugged gently at the sleeve of your cloth. You always knew what he meant. (Not that he wasn't still flustered tho.)

Suo Hayato

Suo always knows what you need. You don't even have to tell him. But why is that? Because he can read people easily, especially you. He knows you like the back of his hand. So he often does thinks to you before you even ask for them. But how does the Suo Hayato reacts when you do something for him?

His school day just ended after some time on patrol with Sakura and Nirei. The two of them went on their way after the trio said goodbye to each other. Suo on the other hand, decided to stop off by the little café next to your school, since he saw a text from you telling him you've finished.

After he responded back, he started walking, quickly arriving at his destination. He smiled when he saw you on one of the tables with your homework books open. He walked over behind you and lowered his head next to yours. "Homework?" You turned your head to the side, seeing your boyfriend. He did exactly as he said, but his eyes narrowed at the cup of tea, covered with a little plate in front of him. "Since when do you drink this type of tea-?" "Oh no, that's for you, i have my own right here." "..oh." Well that was certainly unexpected. The tea was still hot, because of the little plate that you put on top, that he just removed and took a sip of his drink.

Exactly. How. He. Likes. It. He smiled at you, even tho you were concentrated on your notebook. He mumbled a quite thanks under his breath and waited for you to finish.

Kaji Ren

Flavour of his lollipops? Uhh, he would have usually said that he doesn't care, he just likes his lollipops. But when you asked him? How did this conversation even begin in the first place? Why was he still listening to this? And most importantly, why did he agreed on that? He honestly can't tell, but he's doing it now.

"I never understood how your brain works." Kaji told you. This is what? His fifth lollipop today? And each one was with a different flavour. Why? Because you asked him if the different flavours made him 'taste different'. He thought it was a stupid idea. He genuinely did. But when he saw the look of excitement in your eyes when he said yes...

So here he is now, with a strawberry lollipop in his hand and you kissing him nonstop. "Hm, I think i like this one best." You thought for a moment. "Or maybe the raspberry.." "You haven't even tried the lollipops?" "I don't have to, i have you right here." You gave him a sly smile and went back to your thinking.

"The strawberry one is the best flavour." "But I actually like the raspberry on you." "Because you haven't tried the actual one." You still didn't give up on your assumption tho. That's when Kaji was the one who got idea. He looked over at the lollipop at his hand and the next thing you knew, it was in your mouth.

"See?" He gently pulled his arm, attempting to pull it away from you, when you suddenly didn't let go of it. He raised an eyebrow at you. "I count that as another kiss for your information." He groaned at your words. "But yeah, you were right, it's the better one."

After that, he always got strawberry flavoured lollipops.

Kiryu Mitsuki (fem!reader)

Kiryu is a gentleman. (Yes, I'll say it every time i post about him.) He knows what a girl wants and needs. And he is confident in his knowledge and experience. But then you decided out of nowhere to surprise him. How did he react on that? Perhaps positive?

Kiryu is known by all for his way of treating girls. At there really is a reason for that. He loves treating with you such respect, always doing things for you, and the way you react to all this? It warms his heart every time. Especially when it's in front of others.

Today tho, was a different say. Because you decided it's time to show him wat it's like, because he deserves it for being such a sweet boyfriend. So today when you two walked into the place of meeting up you opened the door for him. His face was priceless...and very cute in fact. He smiled slyly, thanked you, and walked in.

After that, you kept doing the things that he usually do, payed for the stuff, stood at the out side of the road, fixed the strand of his hair. It honestly felt so new to him, but he loved the way it felt.

At the end of your date (where you walked him to his house), he turned to you and thanked you specifically for all the things today. "I loved that. But i still prefer it to do them for you, because i get to see your cute reactions every time i do something." At that comment you nudged him playfully. "Now that wasn't very gentleman-like from you." You both laughed, and that's how your date ended.

Maybe he liked it a bit too much when you did those...

Leo definitely knows trends, so he is not caught by surprise. I'm pretty much convinced would pretty much talk to anyone as long as he gets money from it.. Morals? Nah not with him. Another scenario I see is him doing this just to piss you off. But well since you're his girlfriend he wouldn't take it too far. He just wants to enjoy you feeling possessive over him. Also, you appreciate the fact he spends his hard earned money on your favorite snacks!

Sho's eyebrow raises. He has a feeling it's probably some new trend you saw. He's going to go with it of course cause he almost never says no to you anyways (Unless you want to conduct experiments in lab room with Leo) but his answer is very straightforward. He wouldn't talk to the girl and would probably show you the message he got before blocking the number. He might get a bit smug joking how you should keep an eye on him just to see you get jealous though.

Alan doesn't know what's going on but since you want it, he goes along with it. You might as well end up waiting forever though. He won't reply at all. He literally doesn't care about getting attention if it's not from you. If the girl was persistent he'd block the number with no hesitation. Also there is a possibility he would see another girl trying to hit on him as a prank, because who in their right mind approaches him so casually? That's reserved for the people he's already close with, and the list is very short. Your name is the first one on it.

Ren rolls his eyes. Another stupid trend? He goes with it anyways, mostly because he knows that if he wouldn't, you'd pester him until he gave in. He would go with trying to scare the girl off, even going as far as lying about his orientation... Who cares as long as it works? Women are an alien race to him. To this day, he still doesn't know how he managed to make you his girlfriend. So yeah. He definitely wouldn't even want to deal with other girls. You're more than enough of a headache.

Haru thinks it's cute how you want to see his reaction to an imaginary situation. I see him as the kind of guy who would brag about you a lot to literally anyone, so naturally he would feel the need to let some random girl know as well, maybe even including a picture of you two together. He doesn't have that much time to begin with so he wouldn't waste it talking to some other girl when he already has the best girlfriend in the world.

Towa um.. I think you're better off not satisfying your curiosity like that. Anything, literally anything can set off his protective side. Unfortunately he's not joking, so you might actually want to take some time to explain to him how he shouldn't just.. deal with people like that. Back to the potential girl - no. He would not let anyone close to him. No one can even begin to compare to you. And he always makes sure you know that.

Silently worried but doesn’t show it much.

“Ah, damn… that’s rough.”

Feels bad for you and tries to be extra considerate.

Helps you communicate when others struggle to understand, though it took him a few days to get used to checking his phone when talking to you.

AKAGI MICHINARI

Panics instantly.

Then, you give, not only to Atsumu and Osamu, but to the whole team a deadpan-blank stare, Aran says to the twins: "See? She's yellin' at you two in her head."

"She's watchin' you too, y'know?"

Then, a message notification pops up on everyone's phones.

"Why on earth are you texting me, when I'm the one who can't talk? I'm listening to you all.”

KITA SHINSUKE, OMIMI REN

They don’t even flinch. Just nod and move on like nothing happened.

Because nothing happened, they were the only ones who realized that even if you had no voice, you could hear them.

OJIRO ARAN

“…Oh.”

Feels dumb but just laughs it off.

Apologizes but still keeps texting you out of habit.

He may even develop a new talent.

The new talent: understanding you in conversations where you only nod or blink at him.

Something about Ren I think is often overlooked is that his character motivation stems from wanting to be invisible, not from disliking others or laziness.

Though those things can be related, there is a distinction. Characters like Yuri and Romeo are belligerent on their own with no provocation. They believe most of the people they interact with are incapable idiots or TGAs (Tiresome, Good-for-nothing Assholes for those of you without a Romeo dictionary). In contrast, Ren isn't really rude unless somebody pokes at him or he's forced to do something he doesn't want to (see: how he treats/speaks about Haru versus Towa). He reacts negatively if the MC acknowledges him (re: bus stop side story) and can be blunt in his requests to be left alone, but he rarely ever calls her names or treats her meanly. Ren would never go out of his way to be an asshole because that would draw attention. He's only rude as a reaction to attention already being on him.

Another hint is his stigma. Though we still don't know much about the demon-pacts, people have noticed/theorized that the ghouls’ stigmas are related to their wants and goals. Leo likes learning secrets; he can eavesdrop on conversations from far away. Haru is overburdened by chores; he can make himself lighter to move faster. Subaru is very private and seems to distrust others; he can sense people's intentions and emotions with a single touch. Rui is afflicted by an incurable curse; he can heal others. So on and so forth.

I also want to draw attention to this particular scene from Episode 12, when Ren was running the duck show at the farm:

Ren's activation word, Raothtas, is an anagram of Astaroth, an archdemon who “can make men invisible” (from the Ars Goetia Wikipedia). In Episode 3, he was able to use it to remove ink stains from the dorm carpet. He seemed unsure that it would work at first, showing that its main intended purpose is not cleaning-related; he likely just turned the stains invisible instead of cleaning them (which is quite in-character tbh). With this in mind, I believe the reason for his pact is related to being able to navigate through life unseen or unacknowledged. It's also why his other main complaint about Jabberwock is that it has no general students: he can't blend into the regular student body because the only members of his House are ghouls. Not to mention, every time the topic of demon-pacts has been brought up, his mood has visibly worsened.

Ren did not have any positive feelings towards the ducks. He didn't even need to be talking, since the dog patch was doing it for him. However, he felt so strongly about making sure the ducks were left alone that he spoke up and scolded the boy anyway. Probably because he related to the situation on a personal level.

Astaroth is also described to “seduce by means of laziness”, but the thing is Ren… isn’t that lazy? He does his best to go to all his classes (despite being woken up at atrocious hours), is invested in doing well in them, and is the only ghoul who has a part-time job. In fact, he works hard enough to resent when things appear easy for others, such as when he suspected Sho of cheating on exams because he scored so high without having to study as much. He doesn't understand how people can succeed without hard work. He only seems lazy because he's in an understaffed, underfunded House that expects a lot of extra work out of him that he isn't willing to give, especially since none of the other Houses’ students have similar responsibilities. Ren being labeled a slacker when characters like Jin and Ed, who actually shirk their required duties, exist, makes me think this whole lazy campaign is a red herring for something else.

Ren, at his core, just wants to feel safe and normal. He doesn't want to go on missions and be put in danger, and he doesn't want to be reminded that he's a ghoul.

Unfortunately, he also goes to Darkwick Academy.

In my head for Martyn, I imagine Ren finding out first because 1. I'm biased 2. Because if you don't know, in Third Life, Ren struggles with keeping secrets. He nearly loses Martyn as an ally because he can't stop telling random people about their secrets. So I thought it would be a good episode where Ren struggles to hold in this secret. Martyn promises he's not evil (probably a lie) but Ren can't say anything to the others because he's just not ready.

As for Scar. He is still working for Cleo so he has to keep it a secret even if he's not doing a great job at hiding it. He and Cub are simple drones working undercover in unique disguises to work their way into trusted positions, making it easier to sneak other changelings into certain communities. And Scar is.. not taking it as seriously as he should.

And yet he doesn't seem to get caught.

You rush towards, him, being careful enough to not let the chair fall behind you, before tackling him.

"GUH!-" He grunts in response, holding your body to not send you both to the ground, his face bright red, nose bleeding slightly form the fight he just came from, eyes shaking from the sudden affection. He can't comprehend.

Umemiya Hajime

You always played with him and the rest of the kids in the orphanage

and you didn't judge him like other did when his hair started to turn white due to the stress and trauma he had to g through when he first arrive to the orphanage

Your parents donated a lot of their things when they where going to leave to the orphanage, which meant that you donated a lot of your own things, like your favorite nightlight because you where no longer scared of the dark, or the large amounts of books you had in your room

he was sad that you had to leave, and so where the other children.

but he believes that YOU were the most sad of them all

the memory of you, sobbing into his small shoulder when you told him that your father got a new job opportunity in Yokohama and that you had to move still replays in his mind when he misses you

the cute nightlight that you gave the orphanage was still beside him, using it for when he's awake late at night and reading

so when he gardening around on the rooftop, the last thing he expected was a call from Hiragi talking about how some "Citizen wanting to meet him"

So he has Hiragi and his group bring you to the rooftop of his school for a small meeting

what he didn't expect is to see you

Standing beside Hiragi, you huffed in exhaustion, the amount of stairs taking a toll on both your legs and your lungs.

"So... how do you know Umemiya?" the blond haired teen asks, hand on the nob of the door to the roof.

"Oh! We were friends when we where younger, but I had to leave for Yokohama because my father got a better job opportunity!" You explained, your words being enough to let him twist the knob and open the door to the roof top.

Walking behind him, your tummy churns in nervousness, anxiety running through your veins. Your hands are behind you, not wanting them to express your emotions unlike your eyes.

"Umemiya, here they are," Hiragi speaks up, rubbing the back of his neck with a large grimace on his face. Umemiya was crouched down, a small, blue, towel on his neck collecting the sweat that beaded around his neck and dripped down his face from the beating heat. He turns around when he hears Hiragi's voice, looking behind the male with a large, close eyed, smile on his face.

"Hello! Where you looking for me?" Umemiya asks loudly, before he open his eyes again and see you.

"Haji... I'm back..." Your eyes are wide. The small boy you were friends with was no longer shorter than you, his hair was no longer white atop of black, his smile was brighter than ever, and he was built.

Instantly after the nickname was dropped from your lips, his menacingly large form was in front of you, arms wrapped tightly around your waist as he lifts you up into the air with a squeal of exitement.

"[name]!!! IT'S BEEN SO SO SO SO SO LONGGG!!!" he calls out in happiness.

From behind him, Hiragi takes a two gaskun-10's, watching the white haired male lift you and twirl around in happiness.

Kaji Ren

You were his first friend in elementary school, being his neighbor had his perks

he would save your when you were bullied, and you would help him calm down when he got a little to heated

he would hold your hand when you both would walk back home and you would bring him extra food from your home when he needed snacks

so when you came over for your weekly play date crying, he was really angry, wanting to know why you were crying

having to move to another city was scary, especially when you don't have your best friend there to save your from the possible bullies you might gain in the new school

So when you left, he was way more irritable and much more stressed, not having you near him to calm him down with your constant affection or words

When he met Hiragi and the rest of the main group that helped him out, it always felt like there was a small piece missing

and the guys could tell that there was always something off. but they couldn't tell what it was

you coming back to your home town in Makochi after years away from it was like a breath of fresh air

what you didn't expect is to be cornered by a group of highschoolers wanting to cause trouble

and he didn't expect to see you again, saving you the same way he used to when you both were younger

It was that same move, that same hairstyle, those same angry but alluring eyes. He was annoyed seeing some stupid group taking advantage of a innocent person, Kusumi and Enomoto right beside him.

"Those damn, fucking..." Kaji mumbled under his breath, standing in front of he gang leader and wiping his face with the back of his hand, Enomoto right beside him. Kusumi stood in front of you, blocking your body and maybe even your view, his frizzy hair catching your eye.

Kusumi quickly types something on his notes app before showing you.

'Are you okay? You seem quite frazzled ( ;´･ω･`)'

You smile lightly, nodding before turning back to the fighting, watching every move your childhood friend did. Every move he did in front of you now was a more refined version of what he did back then. It was fascinating, and almost mesmerizing.

"Yeah, just..." You mumble "reminiscing the last time Kaji saved me when we where younger." Kusumi looks at you before looking down again and taps away at his phone.

'Yk Kaji? ('_'?)'

You chuckle, "Yes I do, we were neighbors-"

You sigh. "We were neighbors when we were younger, he used to save me constantly when we were in school!"

You, who has changed, matured, but also you who is in constant trouble but know that you'd get help. He walks slowly, getting closer to you, almost as if if he were to move too fast, you would run away.

"[name]?" He mumbles, before being hugged tightly.

"I'm back Ren," You say, voiced muffled because of his hoodie.

Initial surprise then delight, most of his victims aren't as willing as you! He'd probably be a lot more careful so as to keep you alive for longer. He'd patch up every wound and be sure to give you food and water regularly, and overall be a lot nicer because you're cooperating. That being said, he'll test your limits and push any boundaries, he wants to know just how much you can take.

Strade;

I think he'd be pretty affectionate and get attached after a while. He'd also want to find out why you're so willing - is it fear? Trauma? Is it sexual? He's genuinely curious.

Lawrence;

Confusion and skepticism. You're really not bothered by him? Why? Is it a trick? He'd be pretty cautious and have a lot of questions. If you earned his trust, he might give you roam of the apartment, if he's there to watch you (not that there's much to explore). If you were nice to him he'd get attached quickly.

You wouldn't be safe in his care, though. He'd have you consume god-knows-what and that probably wouldn't end too well. I can see him getting carried away if he cut you or drained your blood. He doesn't have the experience like Strade, so I doubt he'd realise just how much damage he's caused until it's too late.

That's not to say he'd be willing to let you go, however. If a bond has been formed, he'll want to keep you, alive or not. If he finds you in the river, he'll try and pull you back out.

Ren;

Thrilled! He's happy to have a friend and can't wait to develop your relationship. The more compliant you are the nicer he'll be, and you'll get along well.

The best of the three in terms of survival. Aside from the occasional closet murder, you'd live pretty normally. It would basically be like living with a housemate. He might dress you up in cosplay or something suggestive.

Most likely to catch feelings for you.

Someone on the Tokyo Debunker subreddit brought up ships for MC (as in, not just the characters players like/are attracted to, but ones we actually think would go well with the protagonist) and I haven't stopped thinking about it. I find it an interesting question, because my preferences for myself are pretty noticeably different from who I think she would like! So here are my compatibility assessments!

Disclaimer: I have only played through most episodes once, so my memory of TDB lore may be lacking in certain areas. I also have not completed all affinity stories and have not spoiled myself on them. Also note I will be using "you"/"me"/"us"/"I"/etc. to refer to MC interchangeably with "MC"/"her" because that's just how I'm used to talking about video game protagonists. Spoilers avoided for newest episode but only newest episode.

JABBERWOCK

HARU: I honestly think he is MC's favourite! He's the one she's most often happy to see, and in return he is always grateful for her help. MC seems to volunteer at Jabberwock reasonably often and with little prompting; this isn't necessarily because she's infatuated with Haru, but rather I think it shows they have similar priorities.

REN: He's giving a whole lot of nothing. A lot of the opportunities given to him in-story to bond with her, he outright rejects. He doesn't seem interested in getting into a relationship, or even forming a friendship that could lead to a relationship. I'm all for "enemies to lovers" but you've gotta show the attraction from the beginning! Otherwise it just feels like a shoehorned-in plot twist.

TOWA: Very romantic. Very mysterious. Compelling, and they clearly like each other. My biggest complaint here is that Towa is someone who needs more screentime for an arc. He's not a simple character. I also think MC would be a little afraid of him if it ever really clicks for her what he's capable of. (Both power-level-wise and morals-wise.) I know fans love Towa's yandere tendencies but MC shows no enthusiasm for that type of man.

SINOSTRA

TAIGA: My favourite man! Terrible for MC. She is pretty much trembling in her boots whenever he's around. I can't see a romantic future for them. Taiga's ideal wife is Romeo, and MC just doesn't have the backbone to be Romeo. That said, I think MC having an inconvenient physical attraction to Taiga would be narratively interesting (and fuckin' hot), as who doesn't love the tension between a dangerous violent freak and a shivering field mouse? There are a couple of other points in Taiga's favour too: the fact that he's the ghoul who seems to react to MC's personality the most (he's always noticing how timid she is and seems to find that cute/attractive) and the fact that he eats anomalies (😳) set him apart from most other love interests. Taiga is down to fuck but he's not really a viable option to date.

ROMEO: This might be controversial but I think Romeo is one of those ghouls who has his own love interest, and it isn't you. I'm not even sure he likes women. I've never once felt like Romeo had an interest in my character and the only time he flirted with us was to make Kaito jealous. Honestly that felt more like ship teasing between him and Kaito if anything. As for how MC feels about him, I think she's about as intimidated by him as she is by Taiga, though it's slightly easier to get Romeo to Not Murder You than it is Taiga. Romeo can at least be reasoned with.

RITSU: Never shows an ounce of attraction or even warmth. Even when he smiles at someone, it feels more like professional courtesy than a reflection of his feelings. How would someone like Ritsu fall in love? It's a fascinating question, but the game is not yet interested in giving us an answer. He tends to bully MC into doing what he wants just like Romeo does. He uses social pressure rather than violence, which I think she finds preferable to Romeo's method, but not pleasant. There's also the fact that Ritsu is dedicated to becoming Taiga's lawyer, and I honestly think he would continue trying to defend him if MC ever wanted to press charges for, say, the time he shot her, or the time he tried to throw her out of a train. Taiga's romance potential is already shot because of these things; what can we say of someone who would take Taiga's side?

FROSTHEIM

JIN: Oh boy. Okay, this is the "canon" ship. Jin gets all the tropes, all the sparkly panels of heroically rescuing MC, all the jealous NPCs treating MC like she's already his girlfriend, the works. They could not be pushing this any more clearly. And... it's serviceable. It feels a little out of place in a game like this, and maybe that's why I'm not fully on board, but it works when it works. I just think Jin doesn't have enough screentime to really make the "canon bae" thing stick. Does he KNOW how close we've been getting with 20 other ghouls while he's been absent for several chapters in a row? Does he know he's on a 1-year timer for his slow burn bullshit? I like Jin, and he's one of the most shippable-with-MC characters for sure, but I just think it could be better. It should also be noted that MC is scared of Jin in a similar way that she's scared of Taiga or Romeo. I think honestly she would pick one of the men who hasn't threatened her life yet.

TOHMA: Like Romeo, I judge him one of the "does he even like women?"/"I think he's just using me to get to his husband" type ghouls. He has a flirty manner, but he uses it with everyone, so it means nothing to me when he talks to MC with that same expression. That said, he's more of a simp than Romeo, so while I think Romeo wouldn't care if you fucked his husband, I think Tohma wants you to. I think Tohma is into MC in the way that a stalker might be into a pair of dirty socks once worn by their crush. (And, on a less perverted note, he wants MC to pull Jin out of his depression since he realizes he can't do it by himself--especially now that they're fighting.) I don't think Tohma/MC works as a ship unless it's a complicated situationship with Jin.

KAITO: I don't think MC likes Kaito. She might just be very oblivious (very very VERY oblivious), but she's had many opportunities to respond to his advances and she just kind of no-sells them every time. To me, that kills off any possibility of romance. If MC were more of a self-insert avatar for the player, this wouldn't be an issue, as it would be up to the players to decide whether they liked Kaito or not; but TDB MC has her own thoughts and feelings, and we see them frequently during the episode where she meets Kaito, and the lack of reciprocation is deafening. Another, more possibly controversial point: I don't think Kaito likes MC. I think Kaito wants a girlfriend, and he has gotten it in his head that MC Is Girl, Therefore Perfect For Be Girlfriend. He treats her in a way that he's heard you are "supposed to" treat girls. He doesn't even NOTICE her suspicious behaviour when they meet because he's too busy metagaming the situation; he even gets it into his head that she's "nice" while she's lying to him. He never updates this perception of her. There is nothing about the character, or the way that players play the character, that Kaito actually LIKES. He just wants a girl. Any girl. Bad ship.

LUCAS: Another character who never really expresses attraction to the player character or anyone else. MC has a better relationship with him than she does with Kaito; Lucas doesn't freak out or get jealous or play 4D chess trying to get MC to fall in love with him, so MC can speak to him more honestly. That said, I believe Lucas isn't the sort of person to hide his feelings from MC (or even be able to), so I can't help but read his complete lack of flirtation as a lack of interest. I could believe MC has a one-sided crush on Lucas (which would also make for a really funny group dynamic), but that's about a best-case scenario.

HOTARUBI

HAKU: He really is just "the nice, chill guy" of the roster. Normally those don't compel me at all but Haku is really enjoyable. He's also, at unpredictable points, one of the more horny/flirty characters. Definitely has an attraction to MC, which is a big plus. MC never really gets the chance to respond to his advances, which in this type of game is the closest we get to a canonical attraction from her. (Because of course, they don't want to force players into a romance they might not want.) Good ship! Hard to write about or anything considering Haku is such a mysterious character, but I believe the attraction is real and not part of a dastardly plan, at the very least. Haku definitely puts MC at ease and I think she needs that in a partner.

SUBARU: Another "not sure if he even likes women" situation. Subaru doesn't even come close to the way he acts around Sho, when he's around MC. Subaru is a very cute-and-flustered-around-crushes type, and I think if he were into MC at all, we would see it. I think MC likes Subaru okay as a person but that's it.

ZENJI: This is going to be my most subjective one yet, I think. Zenji is very in his own head. What do I mean by that? I think he would compose seven love ballads for MC and none of them would really be for her. I think he's more attached to the artistic value of love than the feelings themselves. This harms his compatibility with anyone, MC included. As for MC, she actually seems to like Zenji more than the average person does! Or at least more than Haku does. Haku seems to mostly tolerate Zenji, while MC shows enthusiasm for his art in campus stories. Note: this ship becomes untenable in the event that Jiro demonstrates feelings for MC, as I don't think Zenji would compete with him.

MORTKRANKEN JIRO: Does not demonstrate feelings for MC. There are crumbs there, but you have to squint and squeeze to make a ship out of them. I could see MC being attracted to tall, gentle, reliable men, especially ones who made her feel secure during a difficult time in her life... but all we know for sure is that she didn't want to watch him undress for the bath.

YURI: I can see this guy as being the #1 strangest relationship she has with any of the ghouls. At times, he bullies and belittles her, like Ritsu or Romeo or Jin do. Other times, he is working tirelessly to cure her condition and taking the curse more seriously than she's seen anyone else do. He is a very confusingly-supportive love interest. I do not think MC would realistically find romance with him; tsundere that he is, she would need to be more active to really get through to him, and she's a pretty passive person. For Yuri's part, he is embarrassingly infatuated with MC. The man goes beet red when she grabs his hand, for fuck's sake. This is very funny as a one-sided ship and would be equally funny if Yuri decided to actually try confessing, but he is not the best match for MC.

VAGASTROM

ALAN: What do you get when you cross two shy people? Nothing whatsoever, that's what! Alan likes MC but has trouble expressing it and worries about hurting her. MC has a tendency to make herself small and placate people. I'm not sure their relationship can get off the ground in the first place, but if it does, I expect them to have communication issues right away. Mutual conflict-avoidance is not a great foundation for a relationship.

LEO: A great ship for MC if you hate her. Leo is toxic for anyone, but he openly hates MC and wants to get rid of her. If they get into a relationship, it will be one of those dastardly plans I warned of in the ancient scrolls (Haku's paragraph). Has the potential to be really hot though. I don't think MC hates Leo, but I think she avoids him because he seems to hate her. She could be easily manipulated if Leo is so inclined.

SHO: Viable! Sho has never been anything but nice to MC, and it shows in the way she greets him without hesitation. Sho in turn seems to actually like MC, in contrast to Leo. I can't say whether there's any attraction, but there's mutual trust.

OBSCUARY

RUI: Easily one of the most viable ships! There's the romanticism of their mutual curses (as is immediately pointed out by Rui), Rui's open flirtation with MC, the convenient excuse for why they can never hook up (because as stated before, when the excuse is botched it just makes it look like one or both characters isn't interested), and in addition to all that, Rui is one of the nicest and friendliest characters, which is something MC responds well to.

EDWARD: Definitely also a viable ship. MC isn't as intimidated by Ed as she is by characters like Taiga or Jin or even Yuri. The fact that he can overwrite her curse by making her a vampire adds to the intrigue. Ed is both openly horny for MC and expresses interest in being with her forever. The only potential speedbump here is that MC doesn't seem to consider Ed's offer a significant option; her default fear is still "I'm going to die/become a kyklos" rather than "I will have to become a vampire".

LYCA: Has a little potential, but once again the attraction is lacking. I could see Lyca growing to have feelings for MC over time, but it doesn't seem to be the case yet. MC seems to trust Lyca even if he is capable of violence.

In summary BEST SHIPS FOR MC: Haru, Rui, Ed MOST INTERESTING SHIPS: Yuri, Leo WORST SHIPS FOR MC: Taiga, Romeo

But he's like the easiest person to give a gift to because he will appreciate anything you give him. Hell, the fact that you even thought to get him anything is a gift in and of itself.

Although, he'd prefer something that isn't super expensive.

Wishlist: a new blanket, coupons for omurice, another pair of shoes (pls get our boy a new pair of shoes)

Suo Hayato

"Oh? A gift? How thoughtful of you."

Not really choosy when it comes to gifts either. He's probably hella rich and has everything that he wants already, so gifts are like a kind gesture to him if anything.

Although, he prefers gifts with meaning over ones that are practical.

It's because he can buy the practical stuff, but he can't put in meaning into things that he buys for himself.

Wishlist: rare tea leaves, lucky trinket, calligraphy brush (a hobby he picked up recently)

Doesn't really think about gifts, both in the sense of giving and receiving it.

But if you give him one, he'll be over the moon. Doesn't matter what it is really. He's similar to Sakura in this regard.

However, his issue with gifts is that he doesn't know how to react when he's given one. Is a thank you enough? Should he get them a gift too? He's so overwhelmed. Poor guy...

Wishlist: a small plant for his room, a plain shirt, Ume's approval (he's been told you can't put things like this on a wishlist, but he got mad)

Mitsuki Kiryu

He likes to joke about stuff that he likes to receive. Also jokes about not needing gifts because his fangirls already give him more than enough.

He judges gifts based on aesthetic appeal rather than its practical use. He doesn't care if its useless as long as it'll look good on him or in his room.

I just know this dude has the best reactions when given any gift. Even if he has experienced it soooo many times, he'll make you feel as if he's so thankful for it each time.

Wishlist: gems for the game he's playing, a cat charm, a hamburger phone case (so he can alternate between that and the hotdog phone case)

Kaji Ren

Super adamant about not wanting to receive any gifts. He says he's happy enough to have loyal friends by his side. Honestly, he's just scared to get emotional if the gift ends up being too good.

Gifts from close friends hold more value to him regardless of what the gift is.

It's pretty easy to predict the things that he would like...

Wishlist: a box of lollipops, a new hoodie, a year's worth of Spotify subscriptions (me too actually sob)

Umemiya Hajime

It actually puts a bit of pressure on you to find Ume the perfect gift because he is THE GIFT GIVER. It's like he always knows what everyone would love.

A really simple guy. Even quality time is considered a gift in his eyes.

Ume prefers gifts that aren't the usual kinds of things you'd buy from the store, so stuff like handmade gifts, home cooked meals, and letters are his favorite things to receive.

Wishlist: a new trowel for gardening, a shirt that says "Tomato Dad", a dinner party with the entire Furin student body (awww)

Hiragi Toma

He's like an old man, so gifts that are practical are is preference. His eyes go wide when the thing is multi-purpose and a steal for its price.

He's also the type of person to preserve gift bags to use for another time. Although, he has definitely gifted back to a person using a bag given to him by that same person before...

A big believer of the saying, "It's the thought that counts."

Nonchalant as fuck when receiving gifts, but trust me, he is sobbing inside. He's so happy someone thought of him.

Also prefers practical gifts, but it hardly matters. As long as you got him something, he'll be grateful for it.

He won't admit it but he enjoys the moment of unwrapping the gift. Even better if it's wrapped neatly and with a bow on top. Kame's not sure why, but he just loves that part.

If you think you can catch Thoma off guard nice try —at least so early into the relationship— he prides himself in being able to act the part of a gentleman so even if it happened you wouldn't wake up or even notice.

Haruka Sakura

With how cautious he is around practically everyone, he doesn't really think about specific body parts he is attracted to. He has never been close to anyone as an adolescent, never used his phone for any social media platforms, and he sure as hell has never found someone he's liked in his life till he met you.

It took him awhile to even think that it was okay to physically be attracted to someone rather than their personality when his group of friends were talking about it on a random day. He didn't exactly say anything in that moment but when he heard the other guys talking about what they liked on a girl, he starting wondering what he even liked.

If he's being real, he never really pinpointed any body parts that he really liked, aside from your height but that is purely because he wants to make sure he's at least just a little bit taller than you.

No matter the way you looked, he still couldn't find a specific part on your body. He never really thought much into your looks, not to say he didn't find you pretty but he didn't come to a point where a singular look drove him insane. Insane?

Now he remembers. It's your eyes.

His mind came to halt when he started to vision the way your eyes would trail all over his face made him feel all jittery just by thinking about it. As much as he acts like he hates it whenever you stare at him, yelling out profanities and asking if there's something on his face in a panic, that day, he came to a conclusion that he likes your eyes the best.

Hajime Umemiya

Your waist.

He's not sure how he's even come to like this interest on your body, but here he is!

In his point of view, he thinks the reason why he likes your waist so much stems from the way he would protect. It's not like he's protecting your waist from God knows what, but it's more of a social cue of his to grasp you by your torso in the most nicest way possible to drag you away from anything he believes to be dangerous. But, at the same time, he can't deny he digs the way you feel in his hands, sometimes he may even give your waist a little squeeze, making you jump and ask what his problem is.

It's more of a sensory touch he likes more than the way it looks.

Toma Hiragi

Generally speaking, Hiragi isn't much of a person to focus on looks, aside from liking accessories, mainly glasses. Other than his belief that bad boys belong with good girls (wow what an opinion of his), he oddly likes it if you have an overly sensitive neck. It doesn't click to him for a while that it's his favourite part of your body till he blew cold breaths on the back of your neck and watched you quickly stumble from the ticklish feeling.

After seeing you jump nervously and gasp, he is immediately intrigued in the way you reacted and wanted to see more of it.

Ren Kaji

Even after having a wonky relationship with him, he can't deny he doesn't at least find you a little attractive, but he must keep up his reputation with you. He can't exactly eye you up and down otherwise you'd catch him in an instant, on the down side he can't even look at you without it seeming like he's picking for a fight.

So when you two are talking (arguing), something he notices on your face that he may have a small interest is, are your eyelashes. He's not very fond of those fake eyelashes but if you so happen to use mascara on one of those days, he finds it annoyingly pretty the way you bat your eyelashes at him, roll them ever so slowly and blink away. It's even worse if you look at him beneath your lashes, he may just crumble right then and there and grab you by the face to squish your cheeks because of the way you made him feel.

Taiga Tsugeura

Tsugeura has a very odd habit when talking to people. Whenever he's speaking to nearly anyone, his eye contact is off the roof in a good way. He always makes sure to look at the person he's talking to, to make them feel engaged and know that he's indeed listening, his odd habit of his only began to form when he started to talk to you.

That's when he found himself looking at your lips rather than your eyes. The first few times it was because of how much you squabbled around him, he had a hard time keeping up with the way you brought up 4 different topics in one conversation, so he began to focus on the movement of your lips whenever you spoke. But even so, it came to a point where he just began to stare at them by accident, even when your finished speaking.

Sometimes he forgets he's staring there and slowly lifts his eyes back up to your eyes. You had noticed him doing that once and caught him in the middle of it. He was wondering why you went quiet all of a sudden.

Mitsuki Kiryu

His favourite body part pretty much equals to his type of girls due to how oddly specific his favourite body part is.

Surprise surprise, it's your nose.

Typically speaking, he is more into longer noses rather than those button, or hooks noses, not to say anything bad about them, he finds them unique and interesting, but his number one all time favourite are long noses. He used to have an idol crush which he preferably chooses not to distinguish who it is... but because of where it stemmed from, he absolutely digs the shape of your nose. He likes flicking it or lightly tapping it with the tip of his finger.

Hayato Suo

He's not exactly sure why he's come to find this feature of yours the most attractive but he often finds himself staring at your hair. He's not even sure if that even counts as a body part.

He's not so hardcore when searching for something on to critique you on the way you look, generally speaking he thinks it comes from your early childhood days when you'd be so fussy whenever your Mom did your hair in braids and you would take them out the second you got into school.

He always used to laugh watching you struggle to get your hair undone, the way your hair flows in the air and during free time when you'd drag him to random places in the playground, your hair would always run wild against the wind. He's grown accustomed of watching you from behind, and whenever he was, he'd always look at your hair.

Jo Togame

This kind, respectable man loves your hips.

What a gentleman.

Jokes aside, he is still attracted to your face and the way you portray yourself through your personality, but he can not hide the fact that he more than enjoys it whenever he gets to touch your hips. It could be resting his hands against your skin in the area, moving you from side to side, or simply just touching it for no apparent reason.

Tomiyama Choji

He's not much of a person to go for any curves, he's more into the petite and shorter girls, because of that, he oddly really likes your collarbone or neck, leaning more towards your collarbone.

He's not a fan of a snatched waist, dewy hips, and a large chest, what he does like is a simple, smooth collarbone where he could see your bone stick out. He is aware it's a bit off putting for anyone, but to him he finds it extremely attractive, running his hands against the smooth skin and might even want to plaster kisses on to it, who knows!

First of all, sorry for this big ask! I don't know if Gato has answered this at some point, but if not, could you try? Would there be a preferred body type for Strade, Ren, and Law? Same question for Celia, Derek, Mason and Fox.

Are there any characters that you think would like/prefer chubby or fat bodies? How would all of them react to an overweight female MC?

I think Ren doesn't seem to mind? since he's fine/don't mind with how Strade looks apparently. And I noticed that in his room in BTD2, there's a poster of an overweight girl with red panda ears and tail (?) What do you think? Thanks!

Of course! Gato has answered some of those but I’ll happily add my own thoughts ^^

*It’s important to remember that, canonically, all of the characters like all body types, and really don’t discriminate. But for the sake of this ask, I’ll say some specifics:

Strade- Really no preference, he’s all about personality. He cares about how you react and respond to him. Although, he does tend to target “weak looking” people, as Gato said. He tends to lean towards introverts, but that also means people that are physically small like Ren. An overweight MC wouldn’t change things much unless she was very tall or strong, which is a separate ordeal.

Ren- Ren canonically likes a size difference. He likes big and tall people, and also those that are smaller than he is. I don’t think he’d discriminates at all, he’s a fan of every body type. Although, I do see him as someone who likes a little chub. No particular reason, I just think he sees it as soft and cozy, and would like to squeeze your thighs and such ;) so he would enjoy an overweight MC, most likely. It’s not that he seeks it out, but he’s definitely not complaining if that’s the case with you. He’d definitely use your chest as a pillow too, without a doubt.

Lawrence- Law is one of the people that would canonically prefer a plus sized captive. Gato said he wants, and I quote, “how do I say ‘more flesh to play with’ without sounding creepy?”. Aside from that, I don’t think he’d have any other strong preferences, because he doesn’t set out to kidnap someone like Strade does. Yknow, they’re all accidents. Maybe someone who has unique features that he finds interesting?

Derek- As stated many times in canon, Derek goes out of his way to body shame people and make them miserable. He’d insult you for your weight if you were anything above or below average (which is probably skewed to him anyway, because what is average?). However, he doesn’t actually hate plus sized bodies, he just wants to make people upset. (Maybe an internalized distaste for them, because he was raised to think he’s better than everyone, but not as much as he makes it seem). So I wouldn’t say he prefers one kind over another, but no matter what, he’s going to point out your insecurities. An overweight MC would fall into that spot too. If it was someone he planned to keep around for arm candy (I know a lot of people have oc’s that go with him to events/actually have some privileges after a while of living with him), he’d probably go for that ‘average’ in his eyes. I think he’d also prefer someone shorter than him, just because he feels more in charge that way.

Celia- Celia is the other character that would canonically prefer a plus sized captive. According to Gato, Celia has major anxieties about her own weight and appearance, and a plus sized captive would make her feel safe with those issues. An overweight female MC might be a good match for her, actually.

Mason- I don’t think body type is Mason’s primary concern, but it might play in a little. He’s looking for someone who’s physically healthy and would put up a good fight in the wilderness. So he might lean towards someone who’s more muscular or with an athletic build.
