Overcoming Online Mattress Retail Challenges with Smart Design
Selling mattresses online presents unique obstacles that generic e-commerce themes cannot adequately address. The SKT Mattress WordPress Theme specifically tackles these challenges through innovative features and strategic design decisions that transform website visitors into confident buyers.
The primary challenge in online mattress retail is the inability for customers to physically test products. This theme compensates through enhanced product visualization tools, including 360-degree product views, detailed cross-section diagrams, and material close-up photography. Interactive firmness guides help customers understand comfort levels, while sleep position recommendations provide personalized suggestions based on individual preferences.
Trust-building elements are woven throughout the user experience. The theme prominently features certifications, awards, and industry affiliations that establish credibility. Customer review systems are comprehensive, including photo submissions and detailed feedback forms that address specific comfort factors. The theme supports video testimonials and case studies that provide social proof from real customers.
The complex nature of mattress specifications requires sophisticated product information architecture. The theme organizes technical details like coil counts, foam densities, and material compositions in user-friendly formats. Comparison tools allow customers to evaluate multiple options simultaneously, while filtering systems help narrow choices based on specific needs like back pain relief or temperature regulation.
Price sensitivity in mattress purchases is addressed through strategic pricing displays, financing option presentations, and value proposition highlighting. The theme supports promotional campaigns, bundle deals, and limited-time offers while maintaining the premium positioning that quality sleep products require.
Logistical challenges are managed through integrated shipping calculators, delivery scheduling systems, and setup service coordination. The mattress shop WordPress theme accommodates the complex return policies and trial periods common in the mattress industry, presenting these crucial details in reassuring, easy-to-understand formats that encourage purchase confidence.

How to Create a Custom WordPress Plugin From Scratch
Every WordPress site needs a theme to pull content from the database and display that in a design. And theoretically you could run a site with just a theme and nothing else. But that site would be very limited without the addition of plugins.
Plugins add extra functionality to your WordPress site over and above what comes with WordPress core. Everything from a booking calendar or animated slider, to a full-featured learning management system or online marketplace—you can add them all to your site with plugins.
In this guide, I’ll show you how to create your own WordPress plugin. I’ll show you how to use best practice in plugin development, how to get the code in your plugin to run, and how to structure your plugin’s code and files. I’ll also walk you through the process of creating your first plugin and answer some FAQs.
Free and Paid WordPress Plugins
If you want to add some specific features to your website, there are plenty of places you can buy or download plugins. The WordPress plugin directory includes thousands of free plugins that’ll help you create the site you need. But if you’re looking for more advanced features, a better user interface or improved support, it’s worth buying premium plugins from authors on CodeCanyon.
But sometimes you might need to code your own plugin! This can be more efficient than using a third party plugin, as you might only need a part of the code provided by those. It also means you can develop a plugin that meets your needs more precisely, or you can customize an existing plugin to adapt it for your site.
What Do You Need to Make a Plugin?
To build your own plugin and run it on your WordPress site, you’ll need:
a code editor
a development WordPress installation with a copy of your live site for testing
Don't test your plugin on your live site until you know it works!
If you don’t already have a local WordPress installation, follow our guide to copying your site to a local install. Or if you can’t install WordPress locally, use a duplicate of your site on a testing installation on your server. Find out how to copy your site.

Types of WordPress Plugin
Plugins can carry out lots of tasks. What they all have in common is that they add extra functionality to your site. Types of WordPress plugin include:
site maintenance plugins for things like security, performance, or backups
marketing and sales plugins for things like SEO, social media, or eCommerce
content plugins such as custom post types, widgets, shortcodes, forms, galleries, and video feeds
API plugins that work with the WordPress REST API or pull in external content from services like Google Maps
community plugins that add social networking features
…and lots more! For an idea of what plugins can do, check out the WordPress plugin directory and the CodeCanyon marketplace.
What Goes Into a Plugin?
Before you get started building your plugin, it’s worth knowing what goes into a plugin. Exactly what the plugin code will look like will depend on your plugin: some are small, with just one plugin file, while others are massive, with multiple include files, scripts, stylesheets and template files. And there are plenty that fall somewhere in the middle.
The elements you’ll probably have in your plugin are:
the main plugin file (this is essential)
folders for different file types
scripts
stylesheets
include files to organize the code
Let’s have a look at each of these.
The Main Plugin File
The main plugin file is essential. It will always be a PHP file and it will always contain commented-out text that tells WordPress about your plugin.
Here’s an example, from the Akismet plugin:
<?php /** * @package Akismet */ /* Plugin Name: Akismet Anti-Spam Plugin URI: https://akismet.com/ Description: Used by millions, Akismet is quite possibly the best way in the world to <strong>protect your blog from spam</strong>. It keeps your site protected even while you sleep. To get started: activate the Akismet plugin and then go to your Akismet Settings page to set up your API key. Version: 4.1.6 Author: Automattic Author URI: https://automattic.com/wordpress-plugins/ License: GPLv2 or later Text Domain: akismet */
This tells WordPress what your plugin does, where to find out more about it and who developed it. It also gives information about the version number and the text domain and path for internationalisation, as well as the license.
WordPress takes this information and uses it to populate the plugins screen in your site. Here’s how Akismet looks on that screen:
You can see that the information provided in the plugin file is used to populate this entry and provide links.
Other information about the plugin is contained in the README.txt file, which is used to populate the plugin's page in the plugin directory:
The main plugin file will also contain the code that makes the plugin run. Sometimes that will be all the PHP for the plugin, but for larger plugins, there’ll be calls to include files containing extra code. This helps you organize your code and means you don’t have one long disorganized file that’s difficult to work with. I’ll show you how to use include files later in this guide.
Folder Structure
While there are no hard and fast rules on how you organize the folders in your plugin, it makes sense to adopt the same structure that other plugin developers use. This will familiarize you with the way other plugins are built and mean that if you share your code in future, it will make sense to other people.
Folders in your plugin might include:
css or styles for stylesheets
scripts for javascript
includes for include files
templates for template files that your plugin outputs
assets for media and other asset files
i18n for internationalisation files
You might find you need to use more folders if your plugin is large or complex. For example WooCommerce has folders for packages, sample data and more. These in turn include subfolders for things like blocks and admin files.
Scripts and Stylesheets
If your plugin outputs content that needs styling, either in the front-end or in the admin screens, you may need stylesheets.
And if your plugin will use scripts, you’ll need files for these.
It makes sense to keep these in their own folder, even if you only have one of each. You’ll need to enqueue these scripts and stylesheets using a dedicated function in your main plugin file. I’ll show you how to do this when we’re building the plugin.
Include Files
If your plugin needs organisation, you can do this by splitting your code into multiple files, called include files.
You then put these files into their own folder and call them in your main plugin file using an include or require function.
This way, you can keep the bulk of your code in web organized file structure while your main plugin file remains lean and minimal.
If your plugin isn’t all that big, you don’t need to use include files: just add your code to the main plugin file. But you might find you need to organize this file and reorder functions within it as you add them, to maintain a logical structure.
This are the most common elements of a plugin. We’ve seen in the WooCommerce example that there can be many more. Or in smaller plugins there can be many fewer. But as you develop more plugins, you’ll find yourself using these elements more and more.
How to Run Your Plugin Code: Options
When you add code to your plugin, it won’t do anything until you activate it in some way. There are a few methods you can use to activate your code or pull in code from WordPress:
functions
action and filter hooks
classes
Let’s take a look each of these.
Functions
Functions are the building blocks of WordPress code. They’re the easiest way to get started writing your own plugins and the quickest to code. You’ll find plenty of them in your themes' files too.
Each function will have its own name, followed by braces and the code inside those braces.
The code inside your plugin won’t run unless you call the function somehow. The simplest (but least flexible) way to do that is by directly calling the code in your theme or somewhere else in your plugin.
Here’s an example function:
tutsplus_myfunction { // code goes here }
To directly call that function in your theme, you’d simply type tutsplus_myfunction() in the place in your theme template files where you want it to run. Or you might add it somewhere in your plugin... but you’d also need to activate the code that calls it!
There are a few limitations of this:
If the function does something that isn’t just adding content somewhere in a theme template file, you can’t activate it this way.
If you want to call the function in multiple places, you’ll have to call it again and again.
It can be hard to keep track of all the places you’ve manually called a function.
It’s much better practice to call functions by attaching them to a hook.
Action and Filter Hooks
By attaching your function to a hook, you run its code whenever that hook is fired. There are two types of hook: action hooks and filter hooks.
Action hooks are empty. When WordPress comes to them, it does nothing unless a function has been hooked to that hook.
Filter hooks contain code that will run unless there is a function hooked to that hook. If there is a function, it’ll run the code in that function instead. This means you can add default code to your plugin but override it in another plugin, or you can write a function that overrides default code that’s attached to a filter hook in WordPress itself.
Hooks are fired in three ways:
By WordPress itself. The WordPress core code includes hundreds of hooks that fire at different times. Which one you hook your function to will depend on what your function does and when you want its code to run. You can find a list of WordPress hooks in the developer handbook.
By your theme. Many themes include action and filter hooks that you can use to add extra content in key places in your website’s design. And all themes will include a wp_head and wp_footer hook. Combine these with conditional tags and you can run specific code on certain types of pages in your site.
By your plugin or other plugins. You might add an action hook to your plugin and then add functions in your include files that attach code to that hook. Or you might write a filter hook and then have a function that overrides its contents under certain circumstances. Alternatively, if you’re creating a plugin to complement another plugin, you can hook your functions to the existing hook in the third party plugin. I’ve done this with WooCommerce for example, to customize what’s output on product pages.
Some of this is more advanced, but with your first plugin, you’ll probably be hooking your functions to an action or filter hook output by WordPress itself, most likely an action hook.
Classes
Classes are a way of coding more complex features such as widgets and customizer elements, that make use of the existing WordPress APIs.
When you write a class in your plugin, you’ll probably be extending an existing class that’s coded into WordPress. This way, you can make use of the code provided by the class and tweak it to make it your own. An example would be the customizer, where you might write a class including a color picker, making use of the color picker UI that’s provided in the existing class for the customizer.
Using classes is more advanced than functions and it’s unlikely you’ll do it in your first plugin. To find out more, see our guide to classes in WordPress.
If you do write classes, you’ll still have to use actions or filters to get them to run.
Plugin Best Practices
Before you start coding your plugin, it helps to understand best practices for plugins so your code can be high quality right from the start.
These include:
Write your code according to WordPress coding standards. If you want to submit your plugin to the plugin directory, you’ll have to do this.
Use comments throughout your code so other people can work with it—and so you remember how your codworksdide when you come back to it in the future.
Name your functions, hooks and classes using prefixes so they are unique to your plugin. You don’t want to give a function the same name as another function in a different plugin or in WordPress core.
Organize your folders logically and keep your code separated so other people can understand it and so you can add to it over time without it becoming a mess.
You might think that using best practice isn’t necessary because it’s just you working with the plugin. But your plugin might grow over time, you might let other people use it, or you might sell it. Or you might come back to it in two years and not be able to remember how the code is organized!
Creating Your First Plugin in Four Steps
At last! You have a grounding in how plugins work and it’s time to roll your sleeves up and create your first plugin. I’m going to take you through the process of creating a simple plugin that registers a custom post type.
This is a very common use of a plugin, and something you might then build on over time to add custom template files for your custom post type or other functionality.
I’ll show you the basic code for the plugin and give you an introduction to how you might add to it over time.
1. Create the Plugin Folder and File
Even if your plugin is starting out small with just one file, it’s good practice to give it its own folder. Start by creating a folder in your wp-content/plugins directory. Inside that, create a PHP file for your plugin.
Give them both a name that makes sense and includes a prefix. I’m calling my folder tutsplus-register-post-types and my file tutsplus-register-post-types.php.
Now open your plugin file and add the commented out information at the top. You can take mine below and edit it to reflect the fact that this is your plugin, not mine.
<?php /* Plugin Name: Tuts+ Register Post Types Plugin URI: https://tutsplus.com/ Description: Plugin to accompany tutsplus guide to creating plugins, registers a post type. Version: 1.0 Author: Rachel McCollin Author URI: https://rachelmccollin.com/ License: GPLv2 or later Text Domain: tutsplus */
Now if you save your file and go to the Plugins screen in your development site, you’ll see the plugin on the screen:
You can activate it if you want but it won’t do anything yet, because you haven’t added any code to it. Let’s do that.
2. Add Functions
Now it’s time to write the first function in our plugin. Start by making your plugin and adding the braces which will contain the code. Here’s mine:
function tutsplus_register_post_type() { // movies $labels = array( 'name' => __( 'Movies' , 'tutsplus' ), 'singular_name' => __( 'Movie' , 'tutsplus' ), 'add_new' => __( 'New Movie' , 'tutsplus' ), 'add_new_item' => __( 'Add New Movie' , 'tutsplus' ), 'edit_item' => __( 'Edit Movie' , 'tutsplus' ), 'new_item' => __( 'New Movie' , 'tutsplus' ), 'view_item' => __( 'View Movie' , 'tutsplus' ), 'search_items' => __( 'Search Movies' , 'tutsplus' ), 'not_found' => __( 'No Movies Found' , 'tutsplus' ), 'not_found_in_trash' => __( 'No Movies found in Trash' , 'tutsplus' ), ); $args = array( 'labels' => $labels, 'has_archive' => true, 'public' => true, 'hierarchical' => false, 'supports' => array( 'title', 'editor', 'excerpt', 'custom-fields', 'thumbnail', 'page-attributes' ), 'rewrite' => array( 'slug' => 'movies' ), 'show_in_rest' => true ); register_post_type( 'tutsplus_movie', $args ); }
This includes all the labels and arguments for your post type and (crucially) the register_post_type() function which is provided by WordPress.
I’ve used movies as my post type here as I’m creating an imaginary movie review site. You might want to use something different.
Now if you save your file and go back to your site, you’ll see that nothing has changed. That’s because you haven’t activated your code. The method we use to activate the function here is by hooking it to an action hook provided by WordPress, the init hook. When you use a function provided by WordPress (such as register_post_type) you’ll find that there’s a hook that you should use. You can find details in the WordPress handbook entry for registering custom post types.
So let’s add the hook. Under your code, and outside the braces, add this line:
add_action( 'init', 'tutsplus_register_post_type' );
We use the add_action() function to hook our code to an action hook, with two parameters: the name of the action hook and the name of our function.
Now try saving your files and going back to your site. You’ll see that the custom post type has been added to your admin menu.
Nice!
Now let’s add an extra function, to register a custom taxonomy. Below the code you’ve written so far, add this:
function tutsplus_register_taxonomy() { // books $labels = array( 'name' => __( 'Genres' , 'tutsplus' ), 'singular_name' => __( 'Genre', 'tutsplus' ), 'search_items' => __( 'Search Genres' , 'tutsplus' ), 'all_items' => __( 'All Genres' , 'tutsplus' ), 'edit_item' => __( 'Edit Genre' , 'tutsplus' ), 'update_item' => __( 'Update Genres' , 'tutsplus' ), 'add_new_item' => __( 'Add New Genre' , 'tutsplus' ), 'new_item_name' => __( 'New Genre Name' , 'tutsplus' ), 'menu_name' => __( 'Genres' , 'tutsplus' ), ); $args = array( 'labels' => $labels, 'hierarchical' => true, 'sort' => true, 'args' => array( 'orderby' => 'term_order' ), 'rewrite' => array( 'slug' => 'genres' ), 'show_admin_column' => true, 'show_in_rest' => true ); register_taxonomy( 'tutsplus_genre', array( 'tutsplus_movie' ), $args); } add_action( 'init', 'tutsplus_register_taxonomy' );
Again, you might want to change the name of your custom taxonomy. Here I’ve made the taxonomy apply to the post type I’ve just registered (the third parameter of the register_taxonomy function). If you gave your post type a different name, make sure to edit that bit.
Now save your file and take a look at your admin screens. When you hover over your post type in the admin menu, you’ll see the new taxonomy.
You now have a working plugin. Well done!
Let’s take a look at how you might add to it.
3. Enqueue Stylesheets and Scripts
If you need to use custom styling or scripts in your plugin, you could add them right into your plugin file—but that’s not best practice. Instead, you should create stylesheets and scripts as separate files in your plugin folder and enqueue those, using a function provided by WordPress.
Let’s imagine you want to add styling for your custom post type. You could add this to your theme, but you might want to add some specific styling to the plugin to make the post type stand out from other post types in any theme.
To do this, you create a new folder inside your plugin folder called css (or styles, it’s up to you). Inside that folder, create a stylesheet called style.css, or you can give it a more specific name for clarity. I’m going to cal mine movies.css.
You then need to enqueue that file in your plugin so that it can be used by WordPress. Add this to your main plugin file, above the functions you already have. I like to add enqueuing and includes first in my plugin file so I can see what other files are being activated.
function tutsplus_movie_styles() { wp_enqueue_style( 'movies', plugin_dir_url( __FILE__ ) . ‘/css/movies.css’ ); } add_action( 'wp_enqueue_scripts', ‘tutsplus_movie_styles' );
If you save your file, you won’t see any difference in your admin screens—but if you’ve added posts of the custom post type and your stylesheet includes styling for them, you’ll now see that in the front-end of your site.
Note that the hook used for enqueuing both stylesheets and scripts is the same: they both use wp_enqueue_scripts. There isn’t a separate hook for styles.
Enqueuing scripts works in a very similar way. Follow these steps:
Add a scripts or js folder to your plugin folder.
Save your script files in that folder.
Enqueue the script in the same way as the stylesheet above, replacing the wp_enqueue_style() function with wp_enqueue_script().
4. Using Include Files
Another option as you develop your plugin is to create extra PHP files, known as include files. If you have a lot of these, you might create multiple folders for different types of include file, or you might just create one folder called includes.
There are a few functions you can use to include files, which you’ll find in our comprehensive guide to including and requiring files.
Creative Coding
How to Include and Require Files and Templates in WordPress
Tom McFarlin
For example in our custom post type plugin, we might create some code to vary the way the content of the page is output, using the the_content filter hook to amend the code being run each time the content is output on a product page.
Instead of adding this code to the main plugin file, you could add it to a separate file called movie-content.php and then write the code in that file for the way the content is output for movies.
To include this file in your plugin, you add a folder called includes to your plugin, then in that you add the content-movie.php file.
To include that file in your plugin, you add this code at the beginning for the main plugin file:
include( plugin_dir_path( __FILE__ ) . ‘includes/movie-content.php' );
You don’t need to hook this to an action or filter hook—just use the include_once() function in your plugin file. That will then call the code from the include file as if it was in your main plugin file at that point.

FAQs
Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about WordPress plugins.
Why can’t I just add the code I need to my theme functions file?
It’s tempting to simply keep on adding code to the functions.php file, and there is some code that should be there.
But if your code is related to functionality in your site, rather than the design or the output of content, then you should code it into a plugin. This means that if you switch themes in the future, you still have that functionality. And you can use the plugin on another site running a different theme.
I’ve added code to my plugin. Why is nothing happening?
This is probably because you haven’t hooked your code to an action or filter hook. Until you do that, nothing will happen.
When I edit my plugin and check my site, I get a white screen. Help!
You’ve probably added some code that’s got an error in it somewhere. PHP is an unforgiving language and this might be as minor as a semicolon in the wrong place.
Try turning on WP_DEBUG in your wp-config.php file and you’ll see a message telling you where the error is. Then you can fix it.
WordPress
Fixing the WordPress White Screen of Death
Sam B.
When I activate my plugin, I get an error message telling me too many headers have been output. What does this mean?
All this normally means is that there are too many empty lines in your plugin file. Go back and check there are no empty lines at the beginning of the file.
If that doesn’t fix it, try turning on WP_DEBUG.

Turn Vegetable Greens and Herb Scraps Into Flavorful Pestos

In my old, pre-coronavirus life, I aspired not to waste food, but I’ll admit, I wasted a fair amount anyway. I may have intended to use up the rest of that ginger, or those herbs leftover from that recipe I made a few nights ago, or the bag of limes I was sure I needed for daiquiris that I ended up being too tired to actually make. I may have had noble intentions, but life often got in the way and eventually I’d have to toss my shriveled scraps in the compost.
Today is different. Almost overnight, quarantine living has forced me to become a more efficient home cook. It’s also made it easier to be efficient—I’m home and I’m cooking every meal so I have every opportunity to make the most of what I’ve bought.
As I’ve detailed before, one of the main strategies I’m leaning on at home is what I’m calling “component cooking.” I’m not really following too many fully fleshed-out recipes, but instead am building components: blanched or roasted or pickled vegetables; poached or roasted meats; cooked beans; and condiments aplenty. Then I’m mixing and matching them in as many ways as I can dream up, which keeps meals varied and interesting.
One very easy component we can all make with ingredients we probably have in our fridges are herb sauces in the style of pesto or chimichurri. They’re endlessly variable and versatile.

Fennel-frond pesto. [Photograph: Daniel Gritzer]
Here’s an example: This fennel frond “pesto” I made using the tops of four bulbs of fennel I’d bought. The bulbs themselves ended up in a rich bean stew. The fronds went back in the fridge. In my old life I would have found them there a week later, wilted and yellowing. But in this new existence I actually managed to do something with them before they went bad.
I picked the fronds and got about a quart’s worth. Then I added some garlic cloves, some lemon juice and zest, a dollop of Dijon mustard, and a number of anchovies that almost bordered on being obscene. I topped everything off with a big glug of olive oil and blended it until I had more than two cups of sauce. Was it “pesto”? No, not really, but it had that kind of vibe.
It was bright and herbaceous and salty, and it was great spooned over the fennel and bean stew I made. It also made a really good pasta sauce, and was delicious swirled into fresh ricotta cheese as a snack. It was even better as a dressing for a salad of roasted carrots, fresh parsley, and sliced red onions. I didn’t start out with a plan for how to use it, but it’s been easy to find ways. It would’ve been killer tossed with a plain bowl of beans, but I’m all out now, so I’ll have to try that with whatever herbal concoction and pot of beans I whip up next time.

For one dinner, I tossed sliced roasted carrots, parsley, and red onions with my fennel-frond pesto, then mounded them on top of a potato cake with thinly sliced roasted lamb. This wasn’t a recipe, it was just a creative way to combine components I’d whipped up. [Photograph: Daniel Gritzer]
Here are a few tips for making your own herb sauces with whatever you have on hand, whether during quarantine or any other time.
How to Invent Your Own “Pesto” Sauce

Not every green herb sauce is pesto, but you get the point. [Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
“Pesto” is in quotes here because not every herb purée is a pesto, just like not every soup is chicken noodle. But as a shorthand, it’s probably the most widely understood way to talk about puréed, oil-based herb sauces.
Be Open to “Herbal” Possibilities

When it comes to choosing herbs to turn into pesto, of course there are the obvious options like basil, parsley, and cilantro, but don’t stop there. Chives, scallions, tarragon, and mint would all be great additions, as are fennel fronds and even carrot tops.
You can lean on softer herbs more fully without worry, like parsley or basil or fennel fronds. Others may be a little too assertive to be the only vegetal component. Woodsy herbs like oregano and sage could be tasty in moderation, but they might come across too aggressively on their own. Ditto for oniony scallions and chives. It of course depends how you use it, but it’s often smart to cut very bold herbs and vegetables with more mild ones. Parsley, spinach, and even kale are all good picks for diluting a more pungent herb’s flavor.
Alternatively, you could go all in on the bolder greens, but then be sure add less of the sauce to your food, or cut it another way (see eggs and nuts below).
One more trick that might come in handy is softening and taming the raw flavor of the greens or herbs by quickly blanching them in boiling water before shocking them in ice water and then puréeing (it even works for basil). You can blanch and blend most any herb or vegetable, but it’s especially useful for tougher, fibrous ones like kale that can seem gritty when processed raw.
Go Nuts (Or Don’t)

Mortar and pestle not required. [Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
True Genovese pesto wouldn’t be pesto without pine nuts, and while you certainly don’t need nuts for a flavorful herb sauce, they’re an ingredient worth considering for their fatty richness and thickening abilities.
If you do add nuts, there’s no need to limit yourself to pine nuts. Pistachios, almonds, cashews, walnuts, pecans, and more can work well. One thing to remember is that roasted nuts tend to be drier and may not blend up quite as smoothly as plump raw ones do.
Cheese Ain’t a Bad Idea

Once again, classic Genovese pesto serves as a template and its inclusion of finely grated hard cheeses like Pecorino and Parmigiano-Reggiano is another option worth considering. Cheeses add yet more richness and fattiness, but they also add complexity and their own form of tang, thanks to their lactic acid content.
Must you add cheese? No. But you probably won’t regret it either. If you do, it’s better to stick to harder grating cheese like Parm, though you may be able to purée in a soft and spreadable cheese like chèvre with good results. Just skip the semi-soft ones like cheddar and the soft-rind ones like brie.
Don’t Sleep on Eggs
Pesto, pesto, pesto. I know, enough with the pesto. So let’s look at another Italian classic: salsa verde from the Northwestern region of Piedmont. It’s a parsley-based sauce that’s served with many things, including bollito misto, a feast of boiled meats.
There’s a lot that’s great about salsa verde, from its salty and herbal capers to briny, funky anchovies. But perhaps coolest of all is the hard-boiled egg that often gets blended in. Sure, it gives the sauce a subtle eggy quality, but it’s not obvious and I’d wager most blind tasters wouldn’t pick it out. What it really does is help thicken and emulsify the sauce for creamier results.
Punch Up the Flavor

There’s no way to list all the ingredients one might decide to add to a sauce like this, so I’ll just rattle off a bunch off the top of my head. I’m sure you can think of more.
Citrus juice and zest (in particular, lemons and limes)
Capers and caper berries
Olives
Anchovies and tuna, or even a splash of fish sauce
Spices (black pepper, coriander seed, cumin, fennel, etc.)
Garlic and other alliums like shallots
Mustard
Chili peppers (fresh, dried, pastes, or pickled)
Some fresh or roasted tomatoes or bell peppers or rehydrated dried peppers (see romesco and pesto alla Trapanese for ideas)
Ginger
Watch Out for Acid
Acid in the form of lemon juice or vinegar can brighten up a bright green oil-based sauce. I added lemon juice in the fennel frond pesto I made. Do watch out, though, because heavier doses of acidic ingredients can turn bright green vegetables a duller army-green color, and you may lose some of that vibrant, fresh green flavor too.
Speaking of Oil
Olive oil is the real star in these sauces, its grassy green flavor pairing perfectly with whatever herbs and vegetables you’re using in your sauce. But if you don’t have olive oil, a fresh neutral oil (read: don’t use that old sticky bottle you’ve been slowly drawing down for months) like canola, grape seed, or vegetable oil can all work. They won’t add much flavor of their own to the sauce, but if you add enough other flavorful ingredients, that’s just fine.
Get Creative

Sicilian Trapanese pesto has tomatoes mashed in. It’s still a type of pesto! [Photograph: Vicky Wasik]
Don’t be afraid to experiment. Have an eggplant you don’t know what to do with? Maybe roast it, scoop out the flesh, and mash that into your pureed herb sauce as well. It will be a totally different creation, but… why not?
Wondering if some green tomatillos might find a home in your sauce? Well it works in Mexico, so there’s a decent chance you’ll come up with something good.
Point is, take the time to look through your fridge and pantry, think about what you have and what it might taste like as part of your sauce. Really try to imagine the flavors and textures and how they might go together. You have better instincts than you may suspect, so take the risk. You may stumble on a genius idea.
It’s Okay to Use a Blender
I have a history of blathering on and on about the wonders of the mortar and pestle, and I believe it as much today as I always have. But I’m also a very pragmatic cook, and it’s important to remember that we’re not always trying to create the absolute best-possible thing. Often all we really need is something tasty that we can use to make our meals more pleasurable while using up ingredients that might otherwise go to waste. If using a blender is the difference between you actually doing it and just thinking about it, please plug that sucker in and blend away.

As Foreigners Flee China, Pakistan Tells Its Citizens to Stay
NEW DELHI — For days, Nadeem Bhatti, a university student in Wuhan, China, watched as his foreign classmates fled the center of the coronavirus outbreak — lines of Indians, Nepalis and others filed somberly onto buses as their governments evacuated them from the hot zone.
But Mr. Bhatti, like hundreds of other Pakistani students, was left behind.
The Pakistani government has asked Mr. Bhatti and the 800 other Pakistani students in Wuhan to stay put, the result of a grim government calculus.
Pakistan’s health care system is in shambles. Already strained hospitals lack trained doctors and supplies. If infected nationals return home, the virus would likely spread unabated across the country. Pakistan is one of the last places in the world still battling polio, and incidents of dengue fever and H.I.V. are on the rise.
“Believe me — at first I thought that we must go back because we could be infected by the virus,” said Mr. Bhatti, a 25-year-old civil engineering student at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology. “Some nights I couldn’t sleep because of the stress.”
“But now we are thinking no. There are no good hospitals to treat coronavirus back home and the Chinese are working very hard to beat this,” he said.
But other Pakistanis wonder whether they are pawns in a larger geopolitical game. China is one of Pakistan’s most important allies, and as the weaker of the two partners, Pakistan may be under pressure to keep its citizens in China so as not to embarrass Beijing.
China is struggling to contain the new coronavirus and has come under intense global scrutiny for its slow initial response to the virus. On Tuesday, the government announced that 1,016 people had died from the virus since December. More than 100 of those deaths occurred on Monday in Hubei Province, the capital of which is Wuhan.
Updated Feb. 10, 2020
What is a Coronavirus? It is a novel virus named for the crown-like spikes that protrude from its surface. The coronavirus can infect both animals and people, and can cause a range of respiratory illnesses from the common cold to more dangerous conditions like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS.
How contagious is the virus? According to preliminary research, it seems moderately infectious, similar to SARS, and is possibly transmitted through the air. Scientists have estimated that each infected person could spread it to somewhere between 1.5 and 3.5 people without effective containment measures.
How worried should I be? While the virus is a serious public health concern, the risk to most people outside China remains very low, and seasonal flu is a more immediate threat.
Who is working to contain the virus? World Health Organization officials have praised China’s aggressive response to the virus by closing transportation, schools and markets. This week, a team of experts from the W.H.O. arrived in Beijing to offer assistance.
What if I’m traveling? The United States and Australia are temporarily denying entry to noncitizens who recently traveled to China and several airlines have canceled flights.
How do I keep myself and others safe? Washing your hands frequently is the most important thing you can do, along with staying at home when you’re sick.
Suspicions that Pakistan was being overly obsequious grew last week after the country resumed commercial flights to China. Pakistani citizens with the means can return home if they test negative for coronavirus.
On Twitter this week, Dr. Zafar Mirza, a senior health adviser to Pakistan’s prime minister, urged Pakistani nationals in China to remain calm.
The government is “discussing the situation at the highest level and will make the best decision in view of all factors, with reference to the devastating coronavirus potential global pandemic,” Dr. Mirza wrote. “Rest assured you are our own and we care!”
A Pakistani student stuck in Xianning, on the outskirts of Wuhan and appealing to be evacuated, shot back.
“Do you even a little care for us?” wrote the user, identified on Twitter only as Muhammad Ibraheem, who is studying medicine at Hubei University of Science and Technology. “Why don’t you kill all of us? It will be easy for you guys, or sell us to China. At least you will get some benefits. You left us to die here.”
In an interview, Mr. Ibraheem described a desperate situation in Xianning where he said medical supplies were running out as the death toll steadily ticked up. He and many other Pakistani students are running out of money to buy food as the banks are closed and A.T.M.s shuttered.
At the start of the outbreak, the government was so focused on containing the virus and putting the students — like much of the population — under lockdown that they forgot to provide basic support for Mr. Ibraheem and his peers, he said.
“We didn’t have water for three days. And then our university provided for us, but it was four liters of water for each student to last for five days,” he said, adding that he and his peers boiled nonpotable tap water when they ran out.
“The Pakistani government is not helping at all,” he said.
The Pakistani government declined to comment when reached.
Groups of students have resorted to videotaping their anxious pleas to the Pakistani government, asking to be evacuated.
In one video, a group of five masked students stand shoulder-to-shoulder.
“We request the Pakistani government, we are also your children,” one student says through a blue medical mask. “Please, please, please, support us and get us out of this place.”
Mr. Bhatti, who is from the Layyah, said he believes that by staying in Wuhan, he is doing his part to both keep himself safe and strengthen his country’s relationship with China.
“We decided to stay here and stand with this nation,” Mr. Bhatti said. “If they can fight, we can fight. We say in my country that Pakistan’s relationship with China is sweeter than honey and higher than the Himalayas.”
But still, the loneliness grates on him. Most days Mr. Bhatti idles in his room of the once-buzzing dormitory for international students. The large block building hosted hundreds of students from countries the world over. Now, only 127 students — all of them Pakistani — are left.
Just down the hall, four Pakistani students were infected last month after sharing a meal in one of their dorm rooms. Since then, students are forbidden from mingling. To break up the long days, Mr. Bhatti often walks down the hall to speak to his best friend through the window of his dorm room.
Mr. Bhatti described a situation as desperate as Mr. Ibraheem’s during the early days of the outbreak: students running out of food and barred from leaving the dormitory.
After hungry pleas from students, the school administration set up a system where Mr. Bhatti and other students can go to an office on campus and order what they need. He then retires to his room until a knock on the door signals his order has arrived, placed on the doorstep by an unseen delivery person, who speeds away.
Sometimes his mother calls while he is eating, but her anxiety stresses him out, he admits.
“My mother wants me home,” Mr. Bhatti said. “She is crying and praying for me and distributing food to poor people in our neighborhood so they can pray for me, too.”

WordPress Comments Rant
WordPress Comments Rant 💢
The other day I was troubleshooting WordPress comments. Stoner and I were discussing artwork, but she pointed out that if somebody clicks my name they go to the wrong place. Also, I was under the impression that we were both viewing the comments from the desktop. Yet, Stoner was viewing the comments from the reader. For example, after a fury of images being sent back and forth, I learned that she was correct in saying that site was not right. In fact, she was navigating to a site called grimreaper01.wordpress.com. As a result, I spoke to WordPress support and they pointed out that I needed to go to my account setting and just update a few fields. Thus, the moral of the story is use screenshots! I think we spent a few hours in plain confusion (see Worker Bee Story below).

The rest of the day 🐰
That morning was interesting. I got up after being extremely tired. In other words, I was up late coming up with a featured picture for my blog post. Website Mission – 6 Strategies for beginners…Sunlight is in my eyes, while I got some of my clothes ready. Saw my mom. She was already up making breakfast. My plan was to quickly get some clothes ready so I can spend more time on publishing my blog post. Then I remembered that I had to connect my blog post with the prompt today. With the frustrations building, I didn’t know how to use blink in a sentence. I went online and searched how to use it a sentence. Remember, I’m half awake, so yes this is how I think when I’m sleep deprived. Then I selected something that made sense.
The Night Before 🌃
The night before I worked tirelessly on making my featured image. For example, I used a software called Spark. It’s useful because it lets you quickly create designs without actually being a designer. In other words, it provides you with starter templates for any social media platform. This helps me because it removes the guesswork from figuring out how big to make something.

Later that day ☀️
Okay, I’m on the train to work… Happy that I published my post. I realized I forgot my toothbrush. 😭 This was important because I will be visiting my girlfriend place after work. Okay fine, I’m over it now… During my commute, I like to do this interesting thing ~ draw. For example, I slap on some nice beats and continued work on my drawing for Dronstadblog.🔥
The Worker Bee 🐝
When I got to work, I had lots of code to write for my project. Yet, I wanted to focus on my blog and promoting it. During lunch, I watched some PluralSite videos on ZBrush. Afterword, I decided to hang out with my favorite bloggers. After I posted a few interesting comments, I decided to visit Stoner blog. Then learned that my WordPress comments don’t show my site. 🤦 In other words, this whole time I was linking to some other magical site that doesn’t exist. As a result, using WordPress support, I was able to get help and fix my WordPress comments.
Evening Whiskey Shot 🥃
Later that night we went to a bar. I didn’t know these people. Yet, I still want. You never know, you might just meet another artist. The group was mostly talking about sports. For example, NBA or basketball. Yet, I don’t watch sports, so I stayed quiet for a bit. When they got off the topic, I was free to try out my conversation skills and connect with these people. To my surprise, the person who organized the event was an artist. On the other hand, she wasn’t practicing much because she is working as an office admin. Bang!! We all got out of our seats to see what that noise was! A guy in our group was laying on the floor. His chair exploded underneath him. I was about to break down laughing. Yet, I hesitated, I don’t know how candid I will sound if I start laughing my ass off. For this reason, we all got whiskey shots from the manager.
Home Run 🏃
After the bar, I found out that the Microsoft store stopped doing Hololens demo after 4 pm. The store is nearby the bar and we had made plans to visit. Then we rushed to catch the subway train. Yet, somehow we got on the wrong train. When we got off, we had to walk two avenues. I didn’t complain, cos I actually like walking, so it was fun. Eventually, we caught the train and made our way home.

The Ultimate Office Gig: My Summer at MicroHealth
youtube
Written By: Neha Ogale
In two short hours, I will collect my things and bid farewell to Suite 260 of 8245 Boone Boulevard. As I sit at my desk, I survey the various paraphernalia taking up residence in my office: an empty coffee mug, jumbles of cords and surge protectors, pads of sticky notes. My employee ID sits by the keyboard, the words Proposal Intern printed neatly beneath my name.
It’s strange to think that just two months ago I was walking through the door for the first time, nervous for my first day of work and pleasantly surprised at having my own workspace. Somehow, being able to say My office made this job seem more legit, because years of watching sitcoms and rom-coms had effectively lowered my expectations: Before starting this internship, I resigned myself to the idea of spending my summer in the confines of a dingy cubicle, fetching coffee and sending emails. Luckily, the Keurig in the kitchen rendered any espresso excursions unnecessary. I was not so fortunate with the emails, which I quickly learned are ubiquitous and therefore unavoidable for the average white-collar worker.
Jokes aside, this internship was as much a “real job” as I could have hoped for these past couple of months. Though my job title suggests that I worked exclusively with one group, I actually split my time between the proposals team and the marketing department. Ken Kirk – the proposal manager and my supervisor – oversaw my work, which entailed an assortment of clerical tasks and writing assignments. Proposals had a backlog of old contracts that needed appraising; I spent my early days on the job filling out Gold Standard Past Performance Evaluations, armed with a blank template and a patchwork of legal documents to sift through. Ken also gave me the opportunity to do write-ups on business development and concepts such as change management. Under his guidance, I gained a newfound appreciation for the precision and methodology of technical writing: To sound altogether capable, convincing and concise is no mean feat, even for the sharpest of writers. I’d like to think that my time with Proposals taught me a lesson or two on brevity.
Since high school, I have consistently been involved in student journalism, slowly narrowing my focus to opinion writing. My persuasive writing and copyediting skills were likely what landed me this internship in the first place. As a former columnist turned opinion editor at my college newspaper, I was able to apply journalism to the work I was doing at the company. This skill set proved to be especially pragmatic in my collaboration with the marketing department. Alongside Phillip Mazzotta – one of the marketing associates – I brainstormed ideas for blog topics encompassing business, health, and technology. Writing these blogs was when I felt like I was truly in my element during my time at MicroHealth: This was the work I looked forward to doing the most. I would spend hours scouring the internet for reference material because I needed enough background knowledge on the blog topic at hand. I must have accumulated over a dozen pages of handwritten notes while doing my research.
Ken and Phil pretty much gave me free reign with the blogs. Initially, Ken would assign me a topic to cover and I would work from there, but he and Phil encouraged me to pitch my own ideas as well. I would compile a draft and send it to Ken for proofreading, where he would make comments and suggestions. The final draft went to Phil, who would read through the piece again and format it in WordPress, where he would add photos or graphics. He would make it a point to stop by my office before publishing to get my input on the visuals he had chosen. It seems like a small gesture, but receiving that kind of consideration despite being an intern is more than I could have asked for and is a positive reflection on the work environment as a whole. Companies face a difficult task in this way: They must strike a precarious balance between giving employees their independence without leaving them feeling isolated from the rest of the organization. MicroHealth succeeded in creating this balance. Though I was given a considerable amount of leeway in my work, I always felt engaged with what I was doing and knew that my voice would be heard.
I started this internship fresh out of the coffee- and anxiety-fueled days of my first year of college, where 9 A.M. is considered “early” and mid-morning naps are not only acceptable but commonplace. If there’s one thing I took away from the experience, it’s that for a short while I got to play the role of real adult. I was up by 6:30 every morning and out the door by 7:15, clutching my travel mug full of coffee as I prepared to make the hellish commute from Ashburn to Tysons Corner. I would sip my coffee and snarl at the wayward, equally disgruntled commuters weaving in and out of traffic. I’ve even taken to complaining about how expensive things are here in Northern Virginia, and I feel slightly underdressed in anything other than business or snappy casual. My night owl self now considers the day wasted if I sleep past 9 A.M., even on weekends. I can’t say I’ll never wear a hoodie to class again or sleep till noon, but this internship has definitely made me grow up a bit.
Overall, my summer stint here at MicroHealth was an incredibly rewarding experience. Sure, I won’t miss getting up so early, or sitting in traffic jams or rearranging my facial expression into something mildly interested during morning meetings. I will, however, miss the work I had the opportunity to do and the people I was able to do it with. I’ll miss the loudness and last stragglers strolling in, I’ll miss the chaotic conference calls and company lunches, and people complaining about the subpar K-cup quality.
Today might be my last day as an intern, but I know my time at the company isn’t over quite yet. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work here, and I leave this office with the hope that I can continue my work with MicroHealth in the future.

Her Grandmother Got the Coronavirus. Then So Did the Whole Family.
WUHAN, China — Bella Zhang hung an intravenous drip on a spindly tree branch and slumped down on a large stone planter outside the crowded hospital. Her mother and brother sat wearily beside her, their shoulders sagging, both also hooked up to their own drips.
In recent days, Ms. Zhang, 25, had watched helplessly as one by one, her relatives were sickened by the coronavirus that was tearing through her hometown, Wuhan. First, her grandmother got it, then it spread to her grandfather and mother. She and her younger brother were next.
The family had pleaded for help, but the city’s hospitals, faced with an extreme shortage of beds, could not take them. On Feb. 1, Grandfather Zhang died at home.
“They tell us to wait,” thundered Ms. Zhang’s mother, Yang Ling, 48, speaking to reporters from The New York Times who visited the hospital.
She nearly ripped the intravenous needle out of her hand as she waved her arms in frustration. “But wait until when? We’ve already lost one.”
A reporter met the Zhangs when they were getting their IVs outside the hospital, and they relayed their story.
The city of Wuhan, where the new coronavirus originated, is struggling to get the epidemic under control, exacerbated by a lockdown as well as the government’s limited resources and options. Overwhelmed and understaffed, hospitals have turned away many sick residents like the Zhangs, forcing them to go home and quarantine themselves in small apartments where they risk infecting other family members.
Nearly 15,000 people have been sickened in the city, and more than 600 have been killed, accounting for three-quarters of the total deaths in China from the virus. Faced with growing public anger and desperate to stop the spread, the authorities in recent days have been rounding up patients with mild symptoms and putting them into makeshift quarantine centers, which create their own separate challenges for treatment.
Such centers have been set up in sports stadiums and exhibition venues to house several thousand patients in total, with beds arranged close together and in tight rows. The strategy has raised concerns about whether such dormitory-like facilities could inadvertently help spread other infectious diseases among the patients.
Updated Feb. 5, 2020
Where has the virus spread? You can track its movement with this map.
How is the United States being affected? There have been at least a dozen cases. American citizens and permanent residents who fly to the United States from China are now subject to a two-week quarantine.
What if I’m traveling? Several countries, including the United States, have discouraged travel to China, and several airlines have canceled flights. Many travelers have been left in limbo while looking to change or cancel bookings.
How do I keep myself and others safe? Washing your hands is the most important thing you can do.
Ms. Zhang, who was admitted to one of the centers on Thursday with her mother, a retiree, saw it as their only option to keep from infecting her father.
It was cold in the tall, repurposed exhibition center; bathrooms were limited; and there was little privacy. But the beds were heated with electric mattress pads, and medical teams checked their temperatures three times a day and gave out free medicines and meals.
“At least someone cares now,” she said in a telephone call from the quarantine center.
For Ms. Zhang’s family, the first signs of trouble emerged in the week leading up to the Lunar New Year, when her 70-year-old grandmother, who was in good health, had a fever and started coughing.
By then, the new virus had been percolating in the city for weeks, but officials had mostly played it down. That week, the government finally disclosed that it was spreading among people. Ms. Zhang’s relatives didn’t think they were at risk because they had spent most of their time indoors. They took her grandmother to a clinic, where the doctor prescribed medicine for a cold and sent her home.
To contain the outbreak, the government locked down the city, shut down public transportation and banned most private cars on the roads. Like many of her fellow residents, Ms. Zhang, a perfume saleswoman with tinted blue hair and a love of travel, was at first unworried. She posted memes on social media making light of the lockdown and passed the time by sorting trail mix.
Her grandmother, who was staying with them for the holidays, continued to cough. Her fever would not recede.
Then Ms. Zhang’s grandfather, already weak from lung cancer, suddenly took a turn for the worse. He had been using an oxygen machine to support his breathing for 30 minutes in the morning and again at night. Now he couldn’t breathe at all, and needed to be hooked up to the machine around the clock. He came down with a high fever. For four days he was so uncomfortable that he couldn’t sleep, Ms. Zhang said.
Desperate to find help, Ms. Zhang and her family called everyone they could think of. But the hospitals were all full. Emergency responders told them they needed to secure a hospital bed first before an ambulance could be sent.
Ms. Zhang was devastated to see her grandfather, who had helped raise her, nearing death. Overnight, her social media feed, normally full of food and travel photos, became a flood of urgent cries for help. In a last-ditch effort, she called a hotline for the city’s mayor. But an operator had no answers, and asked her what they planned to do.
“You’re asking me, an ordinary citizen, how to resolve this?” responded Ms. Zhang, incredulous. She hung up.
That afternoon, her grandfather died in the family’s apartment.
Workers from a funeral home arrived to take his body away. They said that because he had possibly been infected with the virus, the family was not allowed to accompany the body and it had to be cremated immediately.
But they had no time to mourn. Ms. Zhang’s grandmother was now deteriorating rapidly. They took her to a hospital, where a doctor said that her lungs appeared on a CT scan as almost entirely white — signs of severe pneumonia. She later tested positive for the coronavirus.
Ms. Zhang’s grandmother needed to be admitted to one of the hospitals in the city designated to handle coronavirus patients. There, doctors may be able to monitor their vital signs, treat them with antiviral and anti-H.I.V. drugs and provide them with oxygen support.
But there were still no beds.
By then, doctors had told Ms. Zhang and her mother they were infected. Her younger brother, Allen, also tested positive. They were all told to return home.
Her father, 50, was the only member of the family who had not been infected. He took to sleeping in the living room, away from the rest of them. They wore masks all the time, even as they slept, and took turns caring for Ms. Zhang’s grandmother, who by now was struggling to breathe and could barely get out of bed.
But Ms. Zhang was convinced it was only a matter of time before her father was infected, as well. They did not have any disinfectants or N95 respirators, heavy-duty masks that better protect against the virus.
“Every day you’re living together, drinking and eating together, sitting together and watching the news,” Ms. Zhang said. “No matter how hard you try, of course he’s going to get it.”
For Ms. Zhang, her mother and her brother, their days quickly became a frantic routine.
They would take the grandmother to the hospital to see a doctor around midnight, when the lines were shorter, to get medication. During the day, they returned to the hospital with their mother and waited in line. Ms. Zhang’s mother could barely contain her frustration.
“What kind of government is this?” Ms. Yang said in a rapid-fire local dialect, her voice carrying across the hospital courtyard. “The news is always talking about how good everything is; they don’t even care about the ordinary people.”
It wasn’t just the government’s slow response to the expanding epidemic that infuriated Ms. Yang. It was what felt like the denial of basic dignity. After Grandfather Zhang died, she said, he was taken away “like a dead pig or a dead dog.” They still didn’t know where his ashes were and had no time to think about funeral arrangements.
“I can’t even save the people who are alive,” Ms. Yang said.
“Now, all we can do is beg the heavens,” she said. “Begging anyone else is of no use.”

The Vibrator That Tries to Figure Out the Female Orgasm
www.inhandnetworks.com
Gadgets are already tracking our steps and logging our sleep, but can they improve our sex lives? A startup called Lioness is taking the fitness tracker into the bedroom with a vibrator that logs women’s arousal and orgasms. The hope is for women to use the info gleaned the same way you might use your Fitbit’s sleep data: to figure out what works and tweak your routine. Only the reward here isn’t a good night’s rest.
Other sex toys on the market are leaping to the Web. A $250 “arousal aid” called Fiera made a splash at the Consumer Electronics Show this year. And, for the long-distance romance, there are attempts to link couples through the Internet of things and their underwear. But what Lioness hopes to do is different, empowering women to learn about their own sexuality and communicate it to their partners.
Lioness is the creation of Liz Klinger, a Dartmouth College graduate who studied human sexuality. After working at the investment bank Credit Suisse, Klinger spent a time hosting Passion Parties, a company that uses the old “Tupperware party” model to sell sex toys. She says the biggest thing she learned from customers was the importance of communication in sexuality and that most woman have questions about sex that aren’t necessarily answered by the Internet. Lioness hopes to solve both of those problems by giving women real insight into their sexual responses—while simultaneously giving them something concrete to talk to their partners about when it came to their preferences. “Over time as you use the product you can learn more about what you like,” Klinger says.

Ergonomic studies on how most women actually hold a vibrator showed that most sex toys are designed with the grip set upside down. lioness.io
Lioness launched the product with IndieGogo—competitor Kickstarter shies away from sex toys—and easily exceeded their funding goal with a month left on their campaign. Based in Skydeck, a University of California, Berkeley, startup incubator, the team took on the project as an engineering challenge, and that meant a lot of testing. “There’s so many different bodies and preferences, and there’s a lot of products that don’t take that into account,” Klinger says.
Some of the results surprised Klinger and her team. For instance, ergonomic studies on how most women actually hold a vibrator showed that most sex toys are designed with the grip set upside-down. “There aren’t really hand studies for vibrators like their are for computer mice,” Klinger says. Beta testing showed that the twisting motion a lot of sex toys use wasn’t something that any women wanted. Another surprise about the Lioness vibrator is the size. “Bigger isn’t always better,” Klinger says. “You hand this to some guys and they’re like ‘Really? It’s this size?’”
Lioness also took the same techniques that have improved your iPhone to make the vibrator approachable and ergonomic. That means tactile and easily distinguished buttons, that you can feel without looking, a rechargeable battery and a visible power meter.
Vibrators have been around since the late 1800s and have used everything from steam to a hand crank . They were originally designed to cure “hysteria,” the mysterious women-only ailment that (thankfully) vanished from medical literature in 1954. An ad from a 1904 Sears catalog advertises vibrators as “Aids That Every Woman Appreciates,” offering the possible usages of “churning” and “buffing.” The same keep-it-at-arm’s-length approach came up when Hitachi found the famous Hitachi Magic Wand had an alternate use—and chose to publicly ignore it. Eventually the product was rebranded as the Magic Wand Original, and it’s still sold as a “personal massager.”
But for the most part, that sort of corporate discomfort has since vanished. You no longer have to brave a dank pornshop to find a sex toy; you can just stop by your local Walgreens. Klinger thinks that the mainstreaming of vibrators means a big market for Lioness, which has the benefit of contributing to sexual wellness.
There’s also enormous potential for research. Using anonymous generalized data, researchers could actually study female sexuality on a large scale. Already, the beta testers of Lioness have reported that they noticed their libido and arousal patterns changed around their menstrual cycle. “We will be able to start finding a lot of different patterns that we wouldn't be able to find for each individual person,” co-founder James Wang says.
Lioness is working with Sarah Merrill, a doctoral candidate and sex researcher at Cornell University, to look at the data. Merrill tells Newsweek that the vibrator has the potential to provide a “pharmaceutical-free alternative to address the issue of low female sexual desire and female sexual dysfunction.”
But don’t expect any grocery store rack–type tips on “self-pleasure techniques that will work for all.” The early data seems to show women, as a whole, defy simple answers when it comes to sexual satisfaction. “People had a wide array of preferences,” Klinger says. “I thought there was a range of vibrations they’d prefer, but people have been all over.”

10 WordPress SEO Questions That Took Me 10 Years To Answer!
Of the many different content management systems and web publishing platforms I’ve done SEO for, WordPress is the most popular.
Blogs, company websites and web shops run on WordPress. Designers are fascinated by its versatility and the range of adaptations possible with it. Users love its simplicity and effectiveness.
But being easy to use, WordPress also makes it tempting to take on things you shouldn’t — or overlook/ignore important elements of SEO that can cause problems with business growth, success and profitability.
This column isn’t a step-by-step guide to WordPress SEO, but will address some of the frequent questions I’m asked about SEO for WordPress websites. It will familiarize you with WordPress SEO and dispel some of the myths and misinformation about SEO in general.
Question #1: I’ve Heard That WordPress Is Search Engine Optimized (Out-Of-The-Box). Is That True?
No, there isn’t such a thing as a search engine optimized CMS. Though WordPress is search engine friendly, you will still need to do some manual SEO work for best results. Just switching to WordPress won’t rank your site on Google’s front page auto-magically.
The myth of the “SEO Optimized CMS” continues to spread only because CMS vendors have made it a unique selling point. They announce it at client meetings. They proudly state it on their websites. They highlight it on marketing materials. They speak of it at conferences.
Business owners or leaders without much technical knowledge about SEO often cannot distinguish between the similar-sounding terms “search engine optimized” and “search engine friendly.” I’ve seen companies invest the equivalent of annual salaries of a team of employees on a new CMS that was chosen over others only because they believed it would cover all their SEO needs.
Sadly, that’s not how it works. What WordPress does offer is a great starting point. You can build a site without spending much time or money, and easily weave additional SEO elements into it — if you know how.
Question #2: I’ve Installed A WordPress SEO Plugin. That Means I Don’t Need An SEO Consultant, Right?
SEO isn’t a “quick and easy install.” It’s not turnkey. It’s not “set and forget.” That isn’t how SEO works. SEO is a continuous process that should be woven into the fabric of your ongoing marketing efforts.
There’s no WordPress plugin that can cover all elements of SEO, just as a great hammer won’t by itself help you build a fantastic new house! Configuring your SEO plugin correctly is a step in the right direction — but it’s only the first step! The big picture is a lot more complex and comprehensive.
You need a specialist working for you who understands organic search, knows how SEO strengthens your marketing, and keeps you from making costly mistakes. This person should be engaged in a long-term relationship with you — either as a member of your staff or a consultant/agency on a monthly retainer — to ensure that you perform at your best.
Maybe a few real life examples will help illustrate this better.
When you upgrade WordPress, or a plugin, or install a new plugin or theme, it will alter your website’s code. These changes may negatively impact your site’s SEO if not properly accounted for, which could cost you lost rankings.
Adding new plugins can slow your site down. Site loading speed is an important ranking factor in Google’s algorithm — and just that innocent change could negatively impact your rankings.
Content marketing is critical for every online business. Optimizing your content for specific keywords based on SEO analysis can do wonders in attracting your ideal prospective customers, engaging them, and converting them into buyers. WordPress alone will not be able to advise on keyword trends around which you should build this content.
Running periodic SEO audits can ensure that your site is always optimized and able to stay abreast of the changing SEO environment. Having a WordPress SEO consultant on tap for advice and guidance can increase organic traffic so much that it pays for itself many times over.
Question #3: How Do I Chose The Best WordPress SEO Plugin For My Website?
There are two SEO plugins that distinguish themselves from the rest: All In One SEO Pack and WordPress SEO by Yoast. The former is slightly more popular, while the latter is slightly better rated. (I use Yoast, myself.)
Keep in mind that you may also need additional plugins for tasks tangential to SEO, such as one that allows you to implement your analytics tracking code across the website.
Before deciding which plugin(s) to use, here are some important questions to address:
Compatibility: Is the plugin compatible with other functionality and technology on my site? Will it continue to be compliant in the future? Don’t make assumptions. Find out first.
Support: Will there be adequate technical support for the plugin from the developers, or the community? Check out support forums, reviews and feedback from long-term users to make your assessment.
Usage/Popularity: How popular is the plugin? Many downloads is an indication of widespread use, and a community of experienced users who can offer you ideas or help troubleshoot problems.
Future Development: Does the team or company developing the plugin have a history of updating and revising their solutions? Buying themes and plugins from reputed vendors and Elite providers on marketplaces like themeforest and codecanyon is safer than trying out one from an unknown provider without a track record.
Question #4: How Do I choose A Good WordPress Hosting Solution?
Many factors — like cost, ease of installation, and web server management — can influence your choice.
If you have the resources, time and capacity to deal with hosting, upgrades, backing up data and restoring the site, get a virtual private server (VPS) and manage everything yourself.
If not, a managed WordPress hosting solution handles your technical, security, administration and performance issues for a modest fee, leaving you free to focus on your business and handle things like content creation. Plus, you can sleep better at night!
A few more things to consider with your blog hosting include:
Support For Plugins: Some hosting providers won’t permit certain plugins. Check if that will affect you in any way.
Backup & Restore: A few providers offer “one click” solutions to restore your site from backups if anything goes wrong.
Staging Environment: Having a way to build, test and experiment with your site out of the public eye, and then easily publish it later, can be helpful.
Reputation: Some providers look great on the outside, may even be strong brands, but offer low-quality hosting solutions. Do your research carefully to avoid trouble down the line.
Beware Of Affiliates: WordPress hosting services which offer partners a commission for referring new clients can be harder to evaluate because reviews are biased and often not factual. Be careful while judging on the basis of such lopsided reviews.
Expertise: A hosting provider may actually be a WordPress specialist — or just an expert at selling! Check this out before you make a decision. A silly thing like slow web servers or a careless security system can hurt your business website badly.
Question #5: Can Free WordPress Themes Hurt My SEO?
A great benefit of WordPress is the huge array of free themes available. Many are harmless and are great choices for any website pr blog. Some, however, can hurt your SEO. Consider the following:
Are There Any Spammy Links? A WordPress theme that’s given away as part of a link network or SEO tactic can hurt your organic search visibility and SEO results. If you are not permitted to remove links, don’t use the theme or template.
Will It Be Updated And Supported? Few free themes are patched against security vulnerabilities or upgraded for future WordPress releases. That could be bad for your SEO.
What Do Others Say About It? User reviews and feedback can tell you if the developers are trusted and have a good reputation.
Does It Follow Google’s Guidelines And SEO Best Practices? Run a quick quality check on the demo site and see if it meets Google’s guidelines, is mobile friendly, loads quickly and is coded well. This research can save you plenty of frustration later on.
Question #6: What’s better for SEO — Installing WordPress On A New Domain, Subdomain Or Subfolder?
That’s a great question if you already have a company website and want to add a blog. Where to install WordPress? Let’s look at your options.
New domains are usually relevant for short-lived campaigns, such as event marketing or product launches. But hosting your blog on a fresh domain is an option. While you may not achieve the same SEO effect as for your “main” company website, an experienced SEO consultant can help you reach your audience efficiently, working with your creative agency and developers in getting things right and preventing an organic search fiasco.
By helping content marketers focus on what your audience cares about, testing if creative ideas are likely to work, and adjusting the site’s keyword strategy suitably, your chances for success can be maximized. But first ask if you’re sure you really need a new domain.
If not, your blog may be hosted on a subdomain, like blog.yourcompany.com
My own experience suggests that, for a blog, it is best for SEO when you install WordPress in a subfolder, like yourcompany.com/blog.
Question #7: Will Adding A Post To Many WordPress Categories Be Good For My SEO?
On WordPress, you have the option to assign your pages and posts to more than one category. But how will it affect SEO? Not too badly — if you take care.
When you post the same content in several categories such that that it appears on more than one URL, you have duplicate content. This means you either must avoid doing it, or inform Google which version of the page is the original which is to be indexed. You can do this using meta directives and rel=canonical.
If your content will only live on one URL, you likely won’t need to worry about duplicate content issues (even if other pages on your site contain an excerpt). Be sure to check with your SEO consultant to see how your particular WordPress theme handles categories.
Question #8: My Fancy New WordPress Theme Uses HTML5 And Multiple Instances Of H1 Tags Per Page. Is That Bad For SEO?
Though using H1 tags more than once is not wrong from a coding or design point of view, it’s not ideal for SEO. HTML5 opened the door to this practice, but when people use multiple H1 tags on a page, it can be seen as spammy and harm organic search rankings.
I recommend that you only use H1 for the first heading, which is often the most important one on the page. Keep the old adage in mind: If everything is important, then nothing really is!
Question #9: How Can I Improve My SEO With WordPress Widgets?
WordPress widgets make it easy to publish identical blocks of content across multiple pages, such as sidebars and footers. That may not be dangerous or harmful for SEO, though it rarely offers any advantage.
A smarter way to use WordPress widgets is to offer tailored content focused on what the visitor finds on that page. This adds value, is user-friendly, and enhances the browsing experience. You can use widgets to
Add a social layer that promotes engagement with a community application plugin like BuddyPress.
Add a media plugin so that users may upload images and videos.
Feature new forum members and their posts or photos.
Make new content inside forums and groups easier to discover.
A strategy like this would work equally well for any site, such as one about dog training, or travel or automobiles. WordPress widgets let you target sub-niche audiences within your niche, engaging them in content they have expressed interest in. They act like vitamin injections for your business!
You’ll improve visitor loyalty, and make it easier for search engines to understand what the page is about.
Because you’ll delight visitors, there’s a higher chance of getting more inbound links or Facebook ‘likes’ or Google +1s.
Plus, it makes new content inside forums and groups easier to discover, both on search engines and by visitors to your site’s home page.
The key SEO lesson here isn’t to add many new things or a broader range of content, functions or offerings, but instead to narrow down on to the subject or topic being discussed on that URL. Less is more. Remove clutter that isn’t moving you closer to your business goals.
A word of caution: Be careful with site-wide links that are not 100% relevant. Stay focused on the topic. If the link isn’t relevant in context, remove it.
Question #10: Can It Hurt My SEO If I’m Not Using The User’s Native Language?
While you can use WordPress in another language, you should always set it up to speak your visitor’s language. That provides a better, richer, more engaged user experience, which enhances your SEO.
The WordPress community has already translated the tool into many languages. You can configure your installation through the administrator panel — without any coding or technical skills.
Because it isn’t a good user experience to mix languages on your website, make sure you translate all WordPress plugins into your language also. Before buying it, check to see if a plugin is translation-ready, so that you can translate it using a program like Poedit. Do the same for any WordPress theme you install. This becomes particularly important if you plan to expand your business into new markets, countries and regions.
Avoid localization by IP because many Web users are on proxy servers and VPN switches which can make it seem as if they are in another location or country. Don’t automatically switch languages, creating confusion in the visitor’s mind.
