Sometimes when you're feeling low, a chance encounter on the tram makes you smile. I was waiting for the tram, enjoying the Melbourne sunshine, but mulling over various life situations I have at the moment. A woman in her 60s approached me, wearing a wonderful aqua ensemble. "How long do we have darling?" Was her opening line, performed in a wonderful high class English accent. I had just checked our trusty friend tram tracker so readily replied, "two minutes!" "Two minutes is a fun time to wait. Not too long, not to short!" She said. I smiled. I always think that when my wait is two minutes. She admired my summery shoes. I told her my secret. They were $12 from KMart. "Darling, I would have said they were from Harrods! How divine. Your eyes are blue! They are so beautiful. My mother was a nurse back in London. She delivered over 100 babies that had blue eyes. Then she had me. I had blue eyes for a few months but then they turned hazel. Which is ok I guess. But my mother was disappointed. Oh well." Then the tram arrived. We climbed aboard, I touched on my Myki, she validated her Metcard. We sat down together, after being flung down one end of the tram once it took off from the stop. "You know who else has blue eyes? That wench that cheated on that dreamy movie star and then made a public apology? You know the one. She chatted to Richard Wilkins one time?" "You mean Kristen Stewart?" I asked. "Yes! Her! Oh I don't know why Robert Pattinson took her back." Before I could think of having the same taste in men as a 60 year old I responded, "I thought she had brown eyes. She probably had coloured contact lenses in. Not many people have lovely blue eyes like me!" She laughed. "You are probably right. Anyway. Let's get back to how dreamy Robert Pattinson is. Wasn't he brilliant in that one he did with Uma Thurman?" Before I could continue our mutual love of R Patz, her phone rang. It was an old phone. From the days when a phone was just a phone. I played with my phone that is also the internet while she spoke, smiling at her conversation. She hung up, and laughed. "Oh gosh. That was my cousin George." She said. "He's a retired judge. I lent him this huge heavy book, a diary from our ancestor who lived in the 1800s. He's only read a bit of it but apparently it's taking up too much space on his desk so he wants to return it. So he's coming over tomorrow morning. Little does he know I don't have any biscuits. He's only getting tea! And I have a roman blind to put up. He'll be helping me with that too. That'll teach him. You should come darling!" I wish now that I had said yes. I also wish that I see her again someday. "What does a retired judge do on his desk that he can't have a single book on it?" she winked at me. I laughed. And then she hopped of the tram. #tramdiaries #chanceencounters #retiredjudge #hopeiseeheragain
