To remind that Valjean is the best, the saddest, and the most lonely creature.
I have to share some bad news: Father Fauchelevent has passed away. And regrettably, this is the last mention of him in the book. I will miss him.
Another bad news: even prior to learning the story behind the house on Rue Plumet and its current occupancy by Jean Valjean, we were already aware of Patron-Minette's interest in it. This casts a gloomy shadow. On the flip side, it's another case of COINCIDENCE. Reading the Brick, one might feel that Paris is inhabited by a few dozen of people who constantly and fortuitously bump into each other. (In the twenty-first century, an author daring such a narrative would be grilled or buried alive. But this is Hugo, and he can do whatever he wants.)
Finally, Hugo unveils the backstory behind Jean Valjean and Cosette leaving the Petit-Picpus. Interestingly enough, “Nothing had happened.” From the second tome, we already know the essence of Valjean’s hesitations about letting Cosette spend her life in the convent (how convent was almost the same as the galleys). So, now Hugo basically sums up what we already know, but I really like how he does it: “He asked himself if all that happiness were really his, if it were not composed of the happiness of another, of the happiness of that child which he, an old man, was confiscating and stealing; if that were not theft? He said to himself, that this child had a right to know life before renouncing it, that to deprive her in advance, and in some sort without consulting her, of all joys, under the pretext of saving her from all trials, to take advantage of her ignorance of her isolation, in order to make an artificial vocation germinate in her, was to rob a human creature of its nature and to lie to God.” And, let's be honest, the convent was not a happy place for the nuns living there, so living it was a right thing to do.
It’s very touching how he cherishes memories of young Cosette by never parting with the valise containing the clothes she began to wear when they first met. His sentimentality for this memento of their shared past is so deep that it occasionally sparks jealousy in Cosette herself.
Remaining ever cautious, Valjean strives to avoid repeating past mistakes. To this end, he rents not one, but three houses across different parts of Paris, aiming to confound potential pursuers (and some of these houses have secret exits). The recollections of Javert's relentless pursuit are still vivid: his multiple residences are strategic, so “that he might not again be caught unprovided as on the night when he had so miraculously escaped from Javert.” Yet, he acknowledges that after five years in the convent, the memory of him must have faded somewhat, allowing for a touch more ease. However, this hope is short-lived due to the aforementioned COINCIDENCES, which cause him to frequently encounter people from his past.

🚴‍♂️ Why Cycling Art Prints Speak to the Soul of Every Rider
Tumblr media
There’s something deeply personal about cycling — whether it’s the early morning roads, the silence between gear changes, or the thrill of a long descent. For many, cycling is a way of life. And that’s exactly why cycling art prints resonate so strongly with riders.
On Tumblr, we celebrate expression — and cycling posters are exactly that: a way to express freedom, discipline, adventure, and identity on your wall.
🖼️ Turning Pedals into Art
These aren’t your average sports posters. Today’s cycling artwork pulls from mid-century design, vintage race posters, and European cycling heritage. Bold shapes, limited colours, iconic routes — all wrapped in clean, minimal layouts that look right at home next to your vinyl collection, houseplants, or vintage travel maps.
Whether you're into the Tour de France, local Yorkshire rides, or just your trusty single-speed, there's a bike poster out there that speaks your language.
🎁 Perfect for Gifting (and Self-Gifting)
Got a friend who's obsessed with cycling? Tired of gifting them another pair of socks or a multi-tool? A well-framed vintage cycling art print is personal, stylish, and lasts far longer than any kit upgrade. These are thoughtful gifts for birthdays, Father’s Day, or just as a post-race reward.
Or hey — gift it to yourself. Your walls deserve more than bare paint.
💡 Where It Belongs
Your office wall, to remind you of weekend escapes
A hallway gallery, paired with maps or old race numbers
Above your turbo trainer, for motivational vibes
In your creative studio, as a daily nod to movement and momentum
🔁 From Vintage Roads to Modern Walls
The charm of vintage cycling posters comes from more than just the aesthetic. They carry the stories of historic races, iconic routes, and legendary riders. The grit of cobblestones. The sound of tyres on tarmac. These prints aren’t just art — they’re memory machines.
🚲 Ride, Frame, Repeat.
Whether you're a weekend cyclist, a gear-head, or just someone who loves good design, cycling prints are more than décor — they’re reminders of why we ride. Explore styles that match your journey, your taste, and your pace.
Because cycling isn’t just about being fast. It’s about feeling free.
