I painted this self portrait 40 years ago. In the attic of an Oklahoma farmhouse in the middle of a section of land. When my then two year old son saw this image he covered his eyes and ran from the room. There I was on the canvas, all I had tried to forget: the dark past like demons flying from cafe curtains, cornered, frightened and alone. Twenty five years old. Seven years transitioned out of foster care. Married to a bully of a man. Struggling with how best to mother after a childhood of vagrancy and pain. Now I head back to Oklahoma but not to this state of mind. We evolve even if slowly— over decades. We transform. But not alone.
