Elliott: One thing. I have absolute power. Say it. Say it!
Michael:  What have you got? Is it the coyote?
Elliott: No. Look... Okay. Now, swear it. The most excellent promise you can make. Swear as my only brother on our lives.
Michael:  Okay, don't get so heavy. I swear.
Elliott:  Okay. Stand over there. And uh, you'd better take off... your shoulder pads.
Micheal: What?
Elliott:  You might scare him.  And close your eyes.
Micheal: Don't push it, Elliott.
Elliott: I'm not coming out there until your eyes are closed.
MichealOkay. They're closed(making weird noises)
- Mom is going to kill you.
Elliot: Swear it one more time.
Micheal:(like Yoda) You have absolute power, yes.

E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982, Steven Spielberg)
29/12/2023
E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial, also know simply as E. T., is a 1982 science fiction film directed and produced by Steven Spielberg and written by Melissa Mathison. It tells the story of Elliot, a boy who befriends an extraterrestrial creature, which he nicknames E. T., accidentally left on Earth by his peers. The main cast consists of Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore.
The concept was based on an imaginary friend Spielberg thought up after his parents' divorce. In less than two months, Mathison wrote the first draft of the screenplay, titled E. T. and Me, which underwent two rewrites. The project was rejected by Columbia Pictures, who doubted its commercial potential. Universal Pictures eventually purchased the script for $1 million. The animatronics of E. T. were designed by Carlo Rambaldi.
It premiered as the closing film of the Cannes Film Festival on May 26, 1982, and was released in the United States on June 11 of the same year. The film proved to be an immediate blockbuster, surpassing Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film ever, a record that stood for eleven years until another Spielberg film, Jurassic Park, surpassed it in 1993. It received nine nominations at the 1983 Oscars, including best film, and won four awards: best original score, best special effects, best sound and best sound editing. The film also won five Saturn Awards and two Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture - Drama.
For the director, E. T. opened the way to a new genre of film: more personal films, focused on the emotions and human conditions of the protagonists, as will also be The Color Purple, Schindler's List and Amisted.

I'm still curious about where those dungeon walls came from -- one of the few commercial products at this time, or made by a prop master, or brought from a crew member's own home game? I assume they were placed in the scene to give the audience a visual cue about the game, which most of us played in our imaginations with only the aid of graph paper maps.
Robert MacNaughton who played older brother Michael has given several interviews mentioning some of the background on D&D in ET, including one for Orange Coast Magazine, April 1986 ("Wunderkinds" by Sheldon Craig), and one for Yahoo Entertainment, August 11, 2017 ("'E.T.' at 35" by Gwynne Watkins).
He told Spielberg during their first meeting/audition that he spent his free time riding a bike and playing D&D, which the director then told him were both in the script, possibly helping to land him the role.
"One of the auditions was at Harrison Ford’s house because he and Melissa Mathison, who wrote the script, were together, and his kids Ben and Willard played Dungeons & Dragons. So one of the auditions was at Harrison Ford’s house with all of us playing Dungeons & Dragons." (Yahoo, 2017)
In an earlier version of the script: "The last scene was going to be all of us playing Dungeons & Dragons again, except this time, Elliott’s the dungeon master. Because he was the one that found E.T., he sort of got in with the group."
M&Ms wasn't the only product that missed a chance at some huge publicity: "But it was funny because the script was top secret so [the producers] sent just a few pages of the script to the creator of Dungeons & Dragons. And he said, I absolutely will not allow the name D&D to be used because they’re gambling on the game. I guess he misunderstood; there was a script note that we had money for pizza on the table, and he thought we were gambling on Dungeons & Dragons."
That seems to explain the generic terms like "melee points" in the final script and the lack of visible rule books on the table.
youtube
The D&D scene from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, 1982.  I never used any 3D terrain back then or even any flat tiles or grid mats, so I always wondered whether this was just a clumsy attempt at depicting the game or if it accurately reflected how everyone played differently in different groups.
Now I wonder what those spray cans are doing on the table.  If they’ve been huffing Raid then Mom was more negligent than I remember.
(Jim Carroll’s “People Who Died” plays in the background.  Why do they request pizza toppings from Elliott if the car is on the way?  Is Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow supposed to be part of their game?)

“Feelgood” movies are often thought of as big-hearted romantic comedies, comforting classics, or childhood favourites that still hold up decades later. Guardian writers reflect on their go-to flick, and explain why their pick is endlessly rewatchable.
✔ Defending Your Life Starring: Meryl Streep and Albert Brooks
Directed by: Albert Brooks
Why our writer loves it: “Life-affirming” is perhaps an overused adjective, but few movies have successfully illuminated the human condition as well as this one. Fear is commonplace in our daily lives, but Albert Brooks’s film might hold the key to ridding the worries of anxiety-ridden people such as myself. As the new year often brings about feelings of regret and unease, Defending Your Life is the warmest hug you can receive.” (Oliver Macnaughton)
✔ Notting Hill Starring: Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant
Directed by: Roger Michell
Why our writer loves it: “What is so wonderful about the film is how effortless it all seems. The story isn’t complex; there are no gunfights or CGI raccoons; the greatest jeopardy in the film involves Grant having to catch Roberts before she goes back to America – a problem that reads as plausibly insurmountable in 1999 but today would be remedied with a few WhatsApps. But, despite the illusion of effortlessness, getting everything right in this way is deceptively tricky. Has a single romcom ever managed to marry all of the necessary elements – cast, script, timing, an intangible magic – so perfectly? (No. The answer is no.)” (Ralph Jones)
✔ Married to the Mob Starring: Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Modine
Directed by: Jonathan Demme
Why our writer loves it: The movie is a long list of quirky pleasures, including a “starter kit of premium 80s college rock (New Order, Pixies, the Feelies), well-placed family dog reaction shots, and an FBI agent who dresses himself like Wallace in the Wallace & Gromit shorts. Few of the laughs in the film feel like punchlines or payoffs to some heavily orchestrated joke. Demme’s approach is more low-key and breezy, cruising confidently on the assumption that his DayGlo gangland will be fun enough without him having to push too hard. He catches a rhythm and does the mambo Italiano. It feels like your feet never touch the floor.” (Scott Tobias)
✔ Rush Hour Starring: Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker
Directed by: Brett Ratner
Why our writer loves it: “Rush Hour taps into something that stirred my heart then and now: an ease settles into the two actors, Chan and Tucker’s joviality feeling so genuine that the east-meets-west tropes evolve into characters who have something real at stake, and who are also having fun.” (Tammy Tarng)
✔ Father of the Bride Starring: Steve Martin, Diane Keaton and Martin Short
Directed by: Charles Shyer
Why our writer loves it: “Why do I come back to this film again and again? As a girl and younger woman I was emphatically against marriage (though I’ve since softened) and watched it more as a comedy horror than anything aspirational. The only aspect of the Bankses’ life I’d want is the kitchen. And yet watching Franck and the family put on their ridiculous show makes me want to be part of it. I love ritual, and ceremony, and Steve Martin, and Martin Short, and Diane Keaton.” (Laura Snapes)
✔ Diggstown AKA Midnight Sting Starring: James Woods and Louis Gossett Jr
Directed by: Michael Ritchie
Why our writer loves it: “Diggstown is the perfect feelgood movie – a breezy but exciting genre mashup with enough of a hangout vibe that you can have it on in the background, but also enough stakes that you will inevitably end up giving it your full attention.” (Zach Vasquez)
✔ Head of State Starring: Chris Rock and Bernie Mac
Directed by: Chris Rock
Why our writer loves it: “I’ve come back to this film so many times after the election for laughs, only to wind up seeing the whole picture as a clearer allegory for Kamala Harris’s defeat than Obama’s victory. Like Harris, [Chris Rock starring as Mays Gilliam, a small-time politician turned presidential hopeful] was a party sacrifice, offered up to make a certain loss look less bad on the cards, thrown into the fray at the 11th hour, plugged into a humming campaign apparatus, and touted as a history maker. It really makes you think about how close comedy is to horror.” (Andrew Lawrence)
✔ A Knight’s Tale Starring: Heath Ledger, Shannyn Sossamon and Paul Bettany
Directed by: Brian Helgeland
Why our writer loves it: “To me, watching a feelgood film is an intensely nostalgic exercise. That’s because whenever a film is special or timely enough to take up lodging in your heart, rewatching it is also an act of remembering an old version of yourself. A Knight’s Tale is shaded by the genuine sadness of Ledger’s death only seven years after its release, but when I watch it I also remember the way it used to make me feel, as a girl who loved the jousting because her older brother did, all the while secretly cherishing an action film for being so brazenly sentimental.” (Francesca Carington)
✔ Alita: Battle Angel Starring: Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz and Jennifer Connelly
Directed by: Robert Rodriguez
Why our writer loves it: “My feelgood movie for when humanity lets me down is Alita: Battle Angel, a movie where much of humanity hangs out in a city-sized junkpile. And though I don’t press play with this aspect particularly in mind, it’s nice to imagine a future where things have gone terribly wrong (that just seems realistic at this point) yet unforeseen triumphs still emerge from the tech-nightmare garbage heap. There are plenty of more time-honored films that take a more direct path to temporary bliss, including sci-fi movies better-equipped to restore faith in humanity.” (Jesse Hassenger)
✔ I Know Where I’m Going! Starring: Wendy Hiller, Roger Livesey, Pamela Brown
Directed by: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger
Why our writer loves it: ”I Know Where I’m Going! offers up such portentous moments of mystical and romantic significance lightly, alongside comical asides and colourful eccentricity. It’s a disarming strategy, which tends to leave the audience every bit as bewitched as (the film’s main character) Joan. In this corner of the universe, anything might be possible, even an ancient curse.” (Pamela Hutchinson)
What are your ultimate feel good movies❓ I'd love to hear what your favourites are❗

E.T. The Extra Terrestrial
(SHORT ESSAY)
By Jensen Boles
Tumblr media
E.T The Extra Terrestrial film poster.
Directed by legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial is regarded as an all time classic in the history of cinema. Spielberg was also known for his other classic films he directed such as Jaws, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Close Encounters: of the Third Kind and many more. The film, E.T. was released on June 11th, 1982 and stars the likes of Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore, Robert MacNaughton, Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, and C. Thomas Howell.
youtube
Meeting E.T. for the first time clip.
The story of E.T. consists of an alien from outer space who accidentally gets left behind on Earth and a kid named Elliot (Henry Thomas) befriends the alien and brings him to his suburban California house. The alien, who goes by E.T., is then introduced to Elliot's brother, Michael (Robert MacNaughton), as well as his little sister, Gertie (Drew Barrymore). The kids try to keep E.T.'s existence a secret before E.T. succumbs to an illness which results in the government intervening, turning it into a stressful situation for E.T. and Elliot. However, things go right in the end as E.T.'s people come back for him and E.T. returns home safely. The film is also known for its story about an aliens who come to earth, the plot has been done before in a similar fashion for the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind which was also directed by Steven Spielberg as well as being a influence for other films to come such as Lilo and Stitch and many more.
The film was so influential and is regarded as a classic by many fans and critics alike. Roger Ebert once said "This movie made my heart glad. It is filled with innocence, hope, and good cheer. It is also wickedly funny and exciting as hell. "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" is a movie like "The Wizard of Oz," that you can grow up with and grow old with, and it won't let you down." Roger Ebert is saying that this movie is timeless and no matter how old you are or how many times you see it, the film will always be a classic. Phillip French from The Guardian even said "Spielberg clearly loves E.T. as much as the kids do, but he stops short of reverence. E.T. is indeed a marvelously funny creature and a credit to his galaxy." This quote indicates that E.T. will always be regarded as a classic film.
youtube
E.T. and Elliot Across the moon clip.
When it comes to the film's style, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial uses different techniques such as different practical effects to create a mysterious atmosphere, especially when it comes to the shot of Eliot and E.T. flying across the moon. This scene is so iconic and has also been referenced and spoofed in different forms of media.
For the film’s aspects of global cultures, I see how the film's world is reminiscent of a 1980's American suburban lifestyle. I think it makes sense since the film was released in 1982 and takes place in California.
Tumblr media
Behind the scenes look at E.T The Extra Terrestrial.
I believe this film is considered conventional because of the special effects and puppetry looking impressive for 1982 standards. It is also conventional because of the plot and how it's easy to follow along with being distributed by Universal studios which is a large company. With that said, the film made $11,911,430 for its opening weekend with a production budget of only $10,500,000. It also made $439,454,989 domestically and $357,852,418 internationally, making a total of $797,307,407 worldwide. However, the film does contain a few unconventional aspects such as the language the kids use when the adults aren't around, as well as having the alien act unusual while stranded on Earth. Despite a few unconventional aspects, I still consider this film to be conventional because of the amazing special effects as well as being directed by Steven Spielberg.
Since this film was released in the year of 1982, there have been many events happening globally that year. But the two that I'll be discussing would be the San Francisco 49ers winning their first Super Bowl by defeating the Cincinnati Bengals, 26-21. As well as Michael Jackson releasing his sixth studio album entitled Thriller. I believe these events that happened do have a global impact because the 49ers cemented their NFL dynasty and would later go on to win 5 Super Bowl's. Michael Jackson was a popular music star during the 1980's and influenced a bunch of later musical artists.

Amid Trump Trade Worries, China Tariffs Give Canada ‘Firm’ Ground: Freeland
Tumblr media
Amid Trump Trade Worries, China Tariffs Give Canada ‘Firm’ Ground: Freeland As Donald Trump prepares for his return to the Oval Office in 2025, Canadian Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is positioning Canada to navigate the impending trade landscape. Following the first meeting of the newly revived cabinet committee on Canada-U.S. relations, Freeland emphasized the importance of a unified stance toward China as a foundation for upcoming negotiations with the United States. Trade Relations Under Trump Freeland’s remarks come in the wake of Trump’s victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, during which he pledged to implement blanket tariffs on all goods entering the country. This includes intentions to renegotiate the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), which was established during his first term. The news of Trump’s return has sparked concern among leaders in Canada’s steel and aluminum sectors, recalling the 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and 10% tariffs on aluminum imposed during Trump’s first administration. These tariffs prompted Canada to retaliate with its own measures against U.S. goods. Lessons Learned Freeland noted that Canada has learned valuable lessons from its prior negotiations with Trump. “What’s important about that whole experience is that Canada and the United States agreed, at the end of the day, that it didn’t make sense for our two countries to have those tariffs imposed,” she stated. This agreement highlights the economic interdependence between the two nations. She also pointed out recent collaborative efforts between Canada and the U.S. to impose tariffs on Chinese steel, aluminum, and electric vehicles, positioning both countries as a united front against China. Freeland expressed confidence that this alignment would strengthen Canada’s standing as a reliable trading partner. Diplomatic Relations David MacNaughton, Canada’s former ambassador to the U.S., echoed Freeland’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of being in sync with American officials regarding China. He warned that any divergence in trade policy could lead to significant challenges for Canada. Brian Kingston, president of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association, added that Canada has the potential to secure exemptions from Trump’s tariffs by becoming a preferred supplier of critical minerals as the U.S. seeks to reduce its reliance on China. He suggested that if Canada enhances its mining capacity, it could emerge in a stronger position under a Trump administration. Addressing Trade Challenges Freeland, who met with Canadian steel producers in Hamilton, Ontario, acknowledged the ongoing challenges in trade, particularly concerning circumvention tactics that allow exporters to bypass tariffs by routing goods through friendly countries. When asked if she was the right person to negotiate with Trump in a second term, Freeland confidently asserted her readiness to face renewed pressures. She highlighted her established relationship with Robert Lighthizer, Trump’s former trade czar, who is expected to play a significant role in the upcoming administration. “In my experience, President Trump respects strength and he respects people and countries who are strong and clear in defending their national interests,” Freeland stated. “That’s what I’ve always done, and that’s what I will continue to do.” Conclusion As Canada braces for the implications of Trump’s return, Freeland’s strategic focus on a unified front against China and her readiness to negotiate with the incoming administration may prove crucial. With potential tariff challenges on the horizon, Canada aims to leverage its position to foster stronger trade relations while navigating the complexities of U.S. policy under a familiar leader. Messi's magic wins Inter Miami's first trophy | football news

Messi's magic wins Inter Miami's first trophy | football news
Lionel Messi scored a shoutout and won his first trophy in North American soccer when Inter Miami beat Nashville on penalties (10-9) after their League Cup final ended 1-1 in 90 minutes.
The World Cup winner from Argentina had put Miami ahead in the 24th minute with a wonderful shot into the top corner, but Fafa Picault equalized for Nashville in the second half on Saturday.
After Messi hit the post and Leonardo Campana missed a last-second chance to win the game in regulation for Miami, the game turned into a shootout that ended in a duel between the two goalies and Elliot Panicco’s shot was missed. arrested by Drake Callender of Miami.
Messi and his teammates were quick to celebrate with the US goalkeeper, who had made some key saves late in the game to keep his team alive.
Miami, in its third season of existence, was the bottom of Major League Soccer when Messi joined them a month ago, but Messi, along with Spanish pair Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, has completely transformed the team by leading them into a unbeaten streak of seven games. to the League Cup title.
Co-owner David Beckham, who created the club, said he was in awe of the way the former Barcelona trio had been able to bring about such a quick turnaround.
“It’s like a movie, you see these players play and it’s, emotionally, everything about their game is beautiful,” he said.
Messi, a seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, has scored 10 goals in seven appearances in his new club’s pink jersey and has a chance to reach another final on Wednesday when his side take on Cincinnati in the Open Cup semi-final from United States.
The Leagues Cup trophy is Messi’s 44th, the most for any player. The Argentine was named player of the tournament, which includes teams from MLS and Liga MX.
This was not the domineering and entertaining Miami that has lit up the tournament in the past month, featuring clubs from MLS and Mexico’s Liga MX, but the victory was sweet nonetheless.
“I am very happy to win our first title in just one month, the first for the club. The team is growing by leaps and bounds and we are very happy”, said the midfielder Busquets.
“We have infected the team with our spirit, our work, our character and experience. We are making a solid team… And then we have Leo, who makes the difference because he is the best in the world”.
Nashville departed with the clear intention of limiting the impact of Busquets and, by extension, Messi, and they were effective in forcing Miami to play a slower, deeper type of possession football in their own half.
Gary Smith’s side sent an early warning that they could cause trouble for Miami on set pieces with Walker Zimmerman’s header from a Lukas MacNaughton corner forcing Callender to make a low save.
Miami was testing, with Messi dropping deeper and looking for holes in the home defense.
But with Walker Zimmerman running the back line well, chances were hard to come by until Robert Taylor spun, spun and fired a ferocious shot that Nashville goaltender Elliot Panicco did well to avoid.
Three minutes later, Miami had the lead, and the source of their advance wasn’t a surprise.
Taylor’s inside pass attempt was blocked and the ball fell to Messi, who got past Zimmerman, opening up enough space to his left to unleash an unstoppable shot from more than 25 yards that flew into the top corner past defenseless Panicco.
Miami appeared to be in complete control, playing confidently on the verge of arrogance, but it was a different story after the interval.
From a corner, Picault won with a header to the far post that bounced off the foot of Benjamin Cremaschi and Callender.
Suddenly, Nashville believed and their German forward, Hany Mukhtar, came to life, testing Miami with his fast runs and Callender with a shot from the right.
Messi came close to another Hollywood finish with a 71st-minute shot from outside the box that grazed the outside of the post.
But in the dying seconds, fellow Ecuadorian Campana should have won the game for Miami, when he rounded Panicco but from a tight angle could only hit the post with the goal at his mercy.
Then came penalties and with all 10 outfield players shooting, with one miss for each side, it came down to the goalkeepers and Callender kept his cool with his shot before denying the panic and launching the celebrations.
As the players sprayed champagne in the locker room, Argentine coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino was reflecting.
“The most important thing we had to do was put together a team while playing a seven-game tournament, and that’s very difficult to do,” he said.
“We now have more clarity about what the future may hold for us after winning this title in 30 days.”
