My silly-funny AU comic where Rocinante decides to save two troubled boys (bosom friends) from the harmful influence of his brother. How did they end up in the North Blue? I didn't even try to come up with it :) Why did Roci make such a decision? According to my head canon, Kid also has the initial "D" in his name. And Killer just in fact very much resembles someone in childhood. Double bingo.

But it seems that this someone miscalculated his strength a little. That moment, familiar to every parent of siblings, when two is too many. And too loud!

And yes, I know that Killer is 4 years older than Kid, but I made him a little younger in the comic for the dynamics of the plot. Don't take it seriously :))

favorite thing about them

she's the definition of poor little meow meow. i love her complexities and flaws. she's a rich spoiled heiress, she has enormous family issues. she tried to kill the family she would die for. redemption arcs in my opinion are not always well written but clarissa's does it for me.

she doesn't shy away from the fact that she has done terrible things for selfish reasons (when you look at it in the grand scheme of things). and while the way her father treated her explains her motivations, they are not excused by it. it is her who decides the person she was is gone, and she's going to spend her second chance making up for the things she'd done. it's honest and raw, and her arc shows that people do improve and change when they receive external support and build meaningful relations. while at the same time it says, some things cannot be amended. you can never bring someone back, but you can try to be good.

she is the subversion of the redemption achieved by one last good Deed or Sacrifice. by the time that happens, she's made peace with herself, with the consequences of her actions and it is a choice for the people she loves while she stops delaying the unavoidable.

least favorite thing about them

i find the lack of not revisiting her complicated relationship with julie a Crime. what do you mean after fighting alongside and joining the crew that found her sister, she would not understand her sister's motivation or want some closure re her death?

(tv wise: girl you Have the worst timing in s6. holden is falling asleep on the railing and you think ah a great time to revisit the horrible acts i did to kill him)

is there any other answer between clarissa and amos ? i personally cannot see their relations as anything other than platonic with deep devotion. they saw each other's worst parts and decided there's good in there even if they can't quite see it in their own selves at times.

they're mirrors but also kind of foils at the same time ?? amos is never afraid while clarissa is all the time,,, let's not be monsters together,, i want to be there in your last moments,,, ah yeahh

i do not truly ship her with anyone. i can speculate about romantic dynamics, but it's not super far in the Shipping category. i do think she and bobbie would make out in the roci tho

is kind of answered in the previous two ? i do not see her and amos' relationship being romantic (except maybe in the roci polycule kind of thing, which i'm still more drawn to the idea of her and bobbie or a complicated relationship with naomi)

random headcanon

i'm not sure how random it is, because it is a nickname she has in canon. but i personally hc that the roci crew over time begins to call her claire after babylon's ashes. peaches is primarily amos' nickname for her and it feels a step too far to use it. so claire is still a way to signal her new path.

unpopular opinion

i have not seen too many opinions on her. i know a lot of people were put off of her in s3, (i have to say she grew on me later as well) but i can now say that she was Unhinged (in a compliment way)

also i think that there's a tendency for her to be portrayed a bit meek in the time after she's joined the roci crew which is the last way i'd personally describe her. she's quiet and reserved, yes, insecure about her place in that family, but she's also blunt and takes risks and has been shown to be incredibly intelligent and capable. and i think it takes away from her character with all her flaws.

June 18: The Expanse 3x11

Returned to The Expanse after quite a break and completely unsurprisingly I literally have no idea what’s going on. This show is SO hard to get into from a standstill, it’s like the only way it can be comprehensible is if you’re watching it episode after episode. I feel like part of this is the lack of exposition I always harp on but this episode did in fact have some exposition. It’s probably also that I just literally do not care enough and zone out all the time and find a lot of it dull. But I think it’s probably something else, too. I don’t know what.

Not a lot really… happened in this ep. But then does anything ever really happen? Maybe it’s because there are so many storylines or maybe I just have too high a bar for ‘something happening’ but it’s like every episode is either Big Action Scenario for a whole 45 minutes or else just water treading or aftermath. Also I think there are often too many stories per episode. Like in this one, even the characters who appeared got, what, 2 scenes each other? Except for Drummer and Belter Guy with Scars who got half the episode to be stuck in some machinery, talking.

I also realized pretty late that almost no characters I cared about were featured in any way today, when Naomi found Alex and then Amos and I was like ‘oh yeah, the Roci crew, huh, forgot they were the main characters allegedly.’ I did like getting to see Bobbie. Yet again she just sort of carries everything around her and is so obviously more interesting and dynamic than almost anyone else. That Chrisjen is entirely absent from the whole back half of this season is a literal crime.

Also I can’t believe Tilly, one of the few characters with any humor at all, was killed off. And I STILL need to deal with Anna. Counting down the episodes until she exits stage left.

Eh. I’m just bitter because I didn’t feel like I could follow anything so I paid less attention so I followed less and thus a downward spiral.

I just wish this show was so much tighter and that either its characters were better or it focused on a smaller group of the more strongly drawn ones. There are some I do really like! But so often they either aren’t appearing or they’re getting like 1 scene in an episode, and even if a character gets a storyline, there are so many that it just… doesn’t come out to much. I don’t think the show works basically at all unless you’re really invested in the overall plot and care mostly equally about all of its dimensions and I am so far from being in that position.

March 4: The Expanse 3x04

Three best characters today:

Bobbie – she’s funny and she had badass moments as well. Like honestly she’s become so well-rounded and relatable and fun to watch. I’m glad there’s more of her and Chrisjen, one of my favorite dynamics, and I also liked the beginning of her bonding with Amos at the end.

Chrisjen: exact same reasons. “Didn’t they train you to bend people to your will?” I know that her interaction with Holden was supposed to show how effective her manipulation tactics were but mostly he came across as very easily swayed lol. But I still love her. I especially liked her scene with the Martian at the end—that scene is actually a really good example of how you can put exposition into dialogue and it’s still very watchable and natural.

Amos: He only had two lines but he brings a sense of ‘it’s not that deep guys’ to the show that it desperately needs.

And the worst:

Anna: Shut up. I feel like I’m supposed to really identify with her and care about her moral core and how she tries so hard but the people are so mean and bad! But she comes across extremely weak and naïve. Like yeah maybe you should have known your words would be twisted and used for bad ends? That was… supremely predictable?

Holden & Naomi: Nothinburgers by themselves and annoying together. I’m tired of everyone being mad at Naomi. The thing is that the cast on the Roci is too small and the plot requires all of them most of the time so like… they really can’t ‘punish’ her in any way for betraying them. They can’t send her anywhere. They can’t stop talking to her. So it’s like this really half-assed consequence that is just kinda awkward and I don’t care. Are H and N even still together? I don’t know! Half-assed relationship too honestly.

And the most confusing aspects:

It’s been too long since the Navoo for me to remember any details about that. Cool visuals though. That sure was something that happened.

The kid experiments. I… do not know what to do with this information because I do not know that I learned anything new. That the protomolecules talk to each other seems pretty obvious. Was that supposed to be revelatory? And the kid switching between his real voice and like… generic unemotional computer/alien speak was very whatever. That’s exactly how the alien would speak. It’s how aliens always seem to speak. Basically I’m saying that I’ve yet to see anything really new or interesting in these aliens.

What I have learned is that Mao really has no personality at all. I’m sure they’re trying to round him out by having him care about kids but still be very ambitious and selfish but these aspects don’t seem integrated to me at all. He likes the cute kid and doesn’t want to hurt her, but then when he sees something else totally disgusting but apparently interesting to him, he’s like ‘fuck those kids’ I guess. He just hasn’t had enough screen time to be yo-yo-ing so fast between these different personality traits.

Overall, a decent episode. I feel like I should either watch faster or give up because watching one episode every now and then makes the whole thing harder to follow—even more so than it already is with its insufficient exposition of course.

December 3: The Expanse 3x01

Returned to The Expanse after a bit of a break. Kind of had to force myself to return because this show is so heavy to me… I never know what’s happening half the time, or like, I know what’s literally happening right now in front of me, but I have no idea how to connect it to anything else or to the larger story. I know I say some variant of this all the time. But this show would be 50% better with a previously on and some exposition.

Chrisjen and Bobbie as a pair were my favorite part of the episode. I was very skeptical about Bobbie for most of last season but she’s grown on me a lot and I think this combination of characters is very fun. They’re a good combination of opposite (diplomat versus soldier, different skill sets, backgrounds) and the same (bad bitch), so they gel and it’s satisfying. And I liked that they were part of a bit of a funhouse mirror version of the Roci found family: a bunch of weirdos on a ship, but different weirdos and a different ship. Bobbie crawling outside the ship lizard-fashion did amuse me. And the design of the racing ship, both inside and out, was really cool.

The reminder of Julie Mao kind of made me miss that story line tbh. And the reminder of Belter politics in that conversation between Fred and Drummer made me miss the Belt and their perspective. I still think that was the most interesting world building of the show. It was really what drew me in at the beginning, and now it’s kinda shunted to the side in favor of Major Power Drama. Ironic. Similarly, I miss Miller and the Noir thing he brought to the table. The mixing up of the genres. This is basically just straight sci-fi action, I’d say? I mean, that’s fine, I suppose.

I enjoy that Errinwright is a full-on villain and I hope he sticks around a while for some more uncomplicated villainy.

And finally, Holden et. al. on the Roci. They’re fine? I still like Amos, Alex, and Prax and I want to see them develop the triad I think they so desperately want to be. (Literally every character and pairing/dynamic I care about on this show is one I’ve never heard of after years of tumblr-watching The Expanse, and that makes me feel a bit like a weirdo lol.) But I’m no invested in like the actual main plot or the conflict over Naomi’s betrayal. Too long of a break? Characters in general don’t do it for me? I don’t know. Anyway, I’m going to keep watching slowly, see what happens. I hope it will be something interesting.
