Clean Cars, Hidden Toll: The Underbelly of Electric Vehicles! What Goes Into Making EVs, Where It Comes From And At What Human Cost

While electric vehicles are essential to reducing carbon emissions, their production can exact a significant human and environmental cost. To run, EVs require six times the mineral input, by weight, of conventional vehicles, excluding steel and aluminum.

These minerals, including cobalt, nickel, lithium and manganese, are finite resources. And mining and processing them can be harmful for workers, their communities and the local environment.

EVs have already secured a prominent place on our roads: They account for more than 10 percent of new-car sales globally. Recent U.S. legislation and regulations are expected to further increase demand.

Projections show global EV sales surpassing gas-vehicle sales before 2040.

The trend is expected to greatly reduce emissions from transportation, which now represent 14 percent of the global total each year.

As the demand for EVs rises, so will the demand for the minerals inside their batteries. Your EV might look like a normal sedan or SUV from the outside.

But underneath the floor of your car is an approximately 900-pound battery block containing materials that have been mined from the ground, sent around the world and put through complex chemical processing to fuel your ride from point A to point B.

That supply chain has a significant human and environmental toll. “If you are going to take a look at any source of energy, you always will have some trade-offs,” said Sergey Paltsev, a senior research scientist at MIT. “There is no magic solution.”

One of the most common batteries on the road, the NMC, used by companies including Volkswagen, Mercedes and Nissan, contains significant amounts of aluminum, nickel, cobalt, manganese and lithium.

But while batteries may vary in composition, they generally rely on the same set of materials.

Where The Minerals Are

The five minerals most critical to EV batteries are each concentrated in just a handful of countries. For these countries, the EV boom holds enormous economic promise, but also environmental, social and workplace challenges that have yet to be addressed.

Production

Bauxite, a reddish rock that is processed to produce aluminum, is mostly mined in Australia, China and Guinea. The lightweight metal enables EVs to travel farther without recharging than if they were made of steel. Aluminum is also one of the most essential minerals in EV batteries.

Reserves

Guinea, one of the world’s poorest countries, sits on Earth’s largest bauxite reserves. By 2030, demand for aluminum will jump nearly 40 percent, to 119 million tons annually, industry analysts say. But the boom is taking a toll on the people who live on the land. Guinea’s government says hundreds of square miles once used for farming have been acquired by mining companies for their operations and associated roads, railways and ports. Villagers have received little or no compensation, locals and rights activists say.

Production

Indonesia is the world’s top miner of nickel by a wide margin, and if trends continue, it will produce more than two-thirds of the global nickel supply by 2030. Global demand for nickel is expected to increase nearly 20-fold by 2040, and Indonesian officials have approved the construction of nine new nickel smelters in an attempt to capitalize on the boom — with tariffs and export bans to maximize profits at home.

But local communities are fearful of the effects of extraction and processing on their environment.

Reserves

Sixty percent of the world’s nickel reserves are concentrated in three countries: Indonesia, Australia and Brazil. China’s proximity to the nickel-rich nations in the South Pacific has brought in foreign investment that will probably drive growth despite the environmental drawbacks.

Production

South Africa’s mines produce more than one-third of the world’s manganese supply, and analysts predict that global demand from the battery sector will increase ninefold over the next decade as EV suppliers use high-purity manganese to increase battery efficiency and reduce combustibility.

Workers in these mines say they have experienced memory loss, slurred speech and other physical impairments tied to ingesting the mineral’s fine dust.

Reserves

South Africa also sits on the world’s largest reserves of manganese. Ukraine has the fourth-largest known reserves. One manganese basin rests in the country’s south, which Russia continues to bombard in its invasion.

Production

Lithium’s reactivity and lightness enable EVs to generate the same energy and speed as gas-powered vehicles. Demand for lithium is expected to increase 40-fold by 2040, with 80 percent of that demand driven by EVs, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. Australia, Chile and China lead in lithium mining.

Reserves

Three of the largest current reserves are concentrated in South America’s “lithium triangle,” where arid salt flats in Argentina, Bolivia and Chile make it easy to extract lithium by simply evaporating the basins’ brine water. Increased lithium demand threatens to exhaust the region’s limited water supply, displacing Indigenous communities and disrupting the fragile ecology.

There may soon be another supplier. Afghanistan holds untapped lithium that may rival the world’s largest known reserves. China has expressed interest in working with the Taliban government to tap those reserves.

Production

Demand for cobalt is expected to increase 20-fold by 2040.

Seventy percent of the world’s cobalt is mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo. State-owned and Chinese mining companies dominate the sector. But 15 percent of Congo’s mining operations are in the informal sector, with more than 200,000 people working in unregulated and poorly ventilated mines.

The U.S. Labor Department estimates that between 5,000 and 35,000 children, some as young as 6, work in these unregulated operations.

Reserves

Congo is also sitting on the world’s largest reserves. As demand for cobalt rises, activists are calling for better monitoring and regulation.

“Any truly ethical response to this problem would not support disengagement from [Congo] or involve the boycotts of its cobalt,” wrote Mark Dummet, the head of business and human rights at Amnesty International. “Instead, what we, as activists, consumers, auto makers, mining companies and governments alike need to be pushing for are practical solutions that place human rights at the heart of the energy transition.”

China’s Grip On The Supply Chain

Taking the minerals out of the ground is only the first step. The ore is almost never pure and needs to be refined, or processed, to become the minerals that go into batteries.

When it comes to processing, there is one major player: China, which handles more than half of the minerals critical to EV batteries. These elements aren’t used only to power EVs; they also appear in everything from building materials to toys. But as the demand for EV components soars, so could dependency on China’s refining infrastructure.

Percent of Minerals Refined or Processed

The United States is trying to expand its supply chain. The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act offers a tax credit of up to $7,500 to consumers under certain income levels who buy qualifying EVs. But beginning in 2025, an EV that contains any minerals sourced or processed in China would not qualify for the full credit. This poses a problem for cost-conscious consumers, as Beijing controls the lion’s share of the world’s processing infrastructure, and 75 percent of the world’s battery production capacity, according to the International Energy Agency.

In the short term, EV buyers may have trouble securing the tax credits designed to incentivize a clean-energy transition. But over time, such policies could help diversify the EV supply chain.

“We still are going to be dependent on China for many, many years,” Paltsev said.

I am old enough to remember when DA2 shipped, and the spiritual ancestors of this asshole posted comments on messageboards saying that DA2 had no attractive romanceable women, because Bethany was your sister, Merrill had elven features, and Isabela was, according to these sad incels, "too exotic." I remember this because I remember saying, "If the dirty-talking sexually liberated rogue with sun-kissed skin and a lip piercing who runs around with no pants is not up to your standards, your standards are bad."

Meanwhile, on the right, for the apparent current non-sexiness, we have:

Morrigan, who a) looks great, to the point where some people are saying she should look older (not me -- give Morrigan the Cate Blanchett/Rachel Weisz "inexplicably hotter as she gets older" treatment, you go, girl); b) isn't a romance option this time; and c) is actually an in-game asset, unlike Little Red Concept Art over on the left.

Neve, using concept art that was meant to show the costume and not the attitude. Because when you see Neve in game sashaying up to you after freezing bad guys, she looks great, and when I saw the bit of her in the lighthouse with her scarf untied and her blouse unbuttoned, I legitimately forgot what the conversation was about. (And perish angry, ableist haters. People with prostheses get to be sexy, too.)

Taash, looking great. We still don't know what's going on with the whole gender deal there, but as someone who was lucky enough to take one random college elective course the same quarter that half of the varsity women's volleyball team decided to do so, if your spectrum for finding a woman hot does not include women who are tall and have muscles, then that's a you problem, not a them problem.

One random chargen Qunari, which, whatever.

Notes about people being trans, which, as with the ableism, perish angry. Trans women are women. And if Taash ends up being non-binary or some other non-cis-woman option, and that is what turns you off and not the muscles, then again, that's a you problem, not a them problem, and those of us who can like boobs even when they're on someone who isn't a cis woman will be over here with Ruby Rose and Demi Lovato.

Oddly not present on the horribly unsexy right:

Bellara, who is adorkable and also giving Neve a run for her money at "most distracting collarbones in the Lighthouse."

Harding, whose smile lights up the room in the scenes we've seen so far and who was called out by fans as someone they wanted back as a romance option after people saw her in DAI, which was before her glow-up.

Like, I understand that the ideal right thing to do is to tell these jerks that the companions of Veilguard are deep and fully realized characters, and judging them just based on which ones you wanna bang is asshole behavior... but this is a Dragon Age game. It is, as the devs once joked, a dating sim with a small "save the world" minigame you do between scenes. And by those standards, the women of Veilguard (either including Taash, or and also Taash, depending on how that goes) look fantastic. I don't know who I'm gonna romance yet, because I fall for a character more while I'm doing quests with them and getting to know them, but this is a squad with many flavors of gorgeous. Sorry it has character art that includes, you know, character and not the creepy sex doll look of one of those Steam games that includes disclaimers about everyone being of legal age and none of the girls being actually related to you.

It's not a them problem, assholes. It's a you problem.

Huddled together around the motel room table, you and Sam are studying the open book Bobby has placed in front of you.

“That's Michael. Toughest son of a bitch they got.” Bobby tells you pointing at the painting.

Dean walks around, peering at it over your shoulder, coffee in hand.

“You kidding me? Tough? That guy looks like Cate Blanchett.”

You try and suppress a grin at that.

“He's the one who cast Lucifer out of Heaven and into the basement… with THAT sword.” Pointing at the picture “so if we can find it…” Bobby trails off

“We can kick the devil's ass all over again”, Sam says.

“Guess we'd better get reading then”, you sigh, looking at the large pile of books, “try and make some kind of sense of Chuck's message”.

Starting towards the stack of books, Sam stops just short of them, hesitation evident, standing there with a pensive look on his face, as if having an internal debate with himself over something.

Bobby notices Sam's hesitation “kid? You all right?”

You lift your head and look over between the two men as Sam turns to look at him.

“No, actually. Bobby, this is all my fault. I'm sorry.”

“Sam…” Dean warns.

“Lilith didn’t break the final seal. Lilith was the final seal.”

“Sam, stop it.” Dean warns again, a little more firmly this time.

“I killed her”, he finished, ignoring Dean “and I set Lucifer free."

“You what?”

“You guys warned me about Ruby, the demon blood, but I didn't listen. I brought this on.”

Dean says nothing now, silently standing in the middle of the motel room, watching the scene unfold in front of him. Bobby gets up and walks closer to Sam.

“You're damn right you didn't listen. You were reckless, selfish and arrogant.”

"Bobby," you say in an attempt to stop whatever is about to happen here.

“I'm sorry.” Sam says again, voice wavering slightly, eyes pleading for forgiveness.

“Oh, yeah? You're sorry you started Armageddon? This kind of thing don't get forgiven, boy. If, by some miracle, we pull this off... I want you to lose my number. You understand me?”

“Bobby!!” You exclaim shocked to hear those words come out of his mouth.

You look over at Sam, who lowers his head and nods as if this response is what he was expecting, like he deserves it. You sneak a glance over at Dean, who doesn't protest, no argument in defence of his brother, or any reaction to Bobby's words. A part of you begins to wonder if he actually agrees with Bobby on this.

Sam nods again, swallowing hard,“there's an old church nearby. Maybe I'll go read some of the lore books there.”

“Yeah. You do that, boy.”

Ducking his head, he walks out of the room, Bobby then turns back to you and Dean, who had been observing the exchange.

You watch Sam leave and turn to look at Bobby with a disapproving glare, followed by a disappointed glance at Dean, at his lack of reaction.

“Unbelievable” you mutter under your breath before turning and rushing out of the motel room after Sam.

You see him ahead of you on the street

“Sam hold up!”

Hearing you shout, he stops and turns around. As you catch up to him, you notice his body language. It has always amazed you how such a large person can make themselves so small. Taking in the sight in front of you makes your heart hurt for him, the pain and guilt over it all clear to see in his eyes.

"You ok? I'm sure Bobby didn't mean what he said. He’s just… Actually, you know what? I'm not going to try and justify that. He shouldn't have said it. "

"No, he's right," Sam says, hanging his head “it's my fault I started the apocalypse. You should head back to the motel room, help Bobby and Dean”.

You study him for a second before responding firmly “I'm staying with you.” He opens his mouth, no doubt, to protest further, but you jump in before he has the chance to get anything out. “Sam, you didn't know killing Lilith would jump start the apocalypse. I mean, who knew killing her would be a bad thing”.

“You guys all warned me about Ruby, the demon blood, all of it, you told me not to trust her, and I didn’t listen”.

“Look” you begin, glancing over your shoulder as a couple walk past “I'm not going to pretend it doesn't hurt knowing that someone you care about chose a demon and demon blood over you,” Sam glances down, avoiding eye contact. You grab his hand “but I get it. You were being manipulated, and you thought you were doing the right thing. Again, who would've thought it would be a bad thing to kill Lilith?”

You pull Sam into a hug, and he allows himself to melt into it. The two of you standing there in the street like that, for as long as Sam needed.

Eventually, the two of you separate, and as you do, Sam clears his throat in an attempt to regain some composure. “Uh we should probably…” he begins gesturing in the direction of the Church.

“Yeah right” you agree “let's go learn everything we can about the Michael sword and where we can find a castle on a hill of 42 dogs or whatever it was Chuck said.” Linking your arm through his as you start to walk down the street again in the direction of the old church, “although I think I might need a drink first”.

Ruby : I'd actually rather go back to Thurmond on a suicide mission than talk about my "feelings"

A question that’s been bouncing around in my head for a while is: did Clancy Gray love Nico?

I’ve been debating this internally because literally no one in my life wants to read or have in depth discussions about TDM, so I have to have them with myself.

Post-East River we’re of the understanding that Clancy Gray is an evil little weasel(he is) that cares for no one but himself. Of course throughout In The Afterlight we’re given a different perspective, he might be a piece of shit and he might be selfish but he does think about other people and what would be right for them(even if his methods are corrupt). Until the end of ITAL I didn’t think there was anything that Clancy truly loved other than power. I never thought that he felt any genuine romantic feelings towards Ruby. I think he liked her, but more importantly I think he liked her power. And he never held anyone else close enough to care about them.

But then there’s Nico… We know that Nico was in love with Clancy, that’s not a debate. He literally tells Ruby in ITAL. But does Clancy love Nico? Nico has been there for Clancy since they had been roommates and were experimented on together at Thurmond. In ITAL through Clancy’s memories we see Nico caring for him in a way that Ruby describes as loving/yearningly. Nico is willing to do practically anything Clancy. And during their time together at Thurmond, Clancy is extremely protective over Nico. It’s interesting that Clancy would choose to care for someone when he expressly believes that colors other than orange are less than. And Nico is green, the bottom of the food chain, I’m sure in Clancy’s opinion. And if we know one thing about Clancy Gray, it’s that he craves power and control. But Nico doesn’t have power and Clancy doesn’t want to control him, so why would Clancy keep him around?

Obligation? Kindness? Love? Towards the end of ITAL when it’s revealed that Clancy has been controlling Ruby in her sleep and having her send messages to PSFs to inform them of their location, we see a conversation play out between Clancy and Nico. Nico had been deeply hurt by Clancy’s second betrayal and is expressing his anger towards Clancy. Nico is begging him to call off whoever is coming and Clancy seems to almost give in. This of course is surprising to both readers and Ruby as Clancy seems to always be putting on a facade. Of course we know how it ends but it’s the fact that Clancy almost gave in to Nico’s pleads that is interesting to me.

To answer my own question: did Clancy Gray love Nico? Yes. Did he love Nico romantically? That could be debated. I think that Clancy loved Nico, but I also think that Clancy never knew how to love the way that Nico might have wanted. In another universe they might have been happy.

Mercy by Sara Cate. This is a soft age gape (12 years, I think) book in which the heroine finds out she's not as vanilla as she believed when she matches with her male friend's (fully adult) son on a dating app. He's a bratty sub, she's a domme, and there's a reeeeeally good pegging scene. Mistress, later in the series, also has pegging; I don't super like this book, but I thought I'd mention it because to each their own, etc.

Wed to the Wild God by Ruby Dixon. Fantasy romance, this unfortunately does not occur until the epilogue, but she does finger him beforehand and he's a very.... sexually free? Romance hero?

I know that Xeni by Rebekah Weatherspoon includes pegging, but I haven't read the book in full.

A Long Time Dead by Samara Breger. This sapphic vampire romance does involve the strap! One thing I love about this book is that the person who straps is the more conventionally femme~ one.

Sierra Simone's Thornchapel series has a strap scene—I can't remember if it's book 3 or 4. But you need to read this series in order. Everyone fucks everyone, but there are two central romances: MMF and FF. The FF romance has a tough domme and a soft sub, and you do get an amaaaazing strap-on scene.

it's not out yet, but in May—Love in Focus by Lyla Lee is a second chance f/f contemporary romance with an excellent strap scene. I really love it because one of the heroines is bi, and the other heroine (a lesbian) was her first girlfriend in college, and she (the bi heroine) was kinda cautious with giving the first time around? So the second time she's like, determined to please.

Something Spectacular by Alexis Hall. One of the leaders in this novel is an AFAB genderfluid NB, and she uses a strap on the other lead, who is a castrato soprano who uses they/them pronouns. It's a superb scene.

Horsegirl — Phonetics On and On (Matador)

In some ways, it would be more surprising if Horsegirl’s second album wasn’t a departure from their first. The Chicago trio aren’t being metaphorical when they refer to 2022’s Versions of Modern Performance as their “high school record,” even if its assured, suffused whorls of noise don’t come across as juvenile in the slightest. Now in higher education and New York City (although Phonetics On and On was recorded in a cold studio back home), if they’d just made a More Versions of Modern Performance it would have risked stagnation (although, given how good the first one was, it would probably also be pretty fun). Instead, here they pull off the indie equivalent of a metal band switching from screaming to clean vocals. The quality of the songwriting hasn’t diminished, but the setting has changed.

The significant shift in their approach is at least partly to do with producer Cate Le Bon, who they say “changed our lives” on the list of thanks on the back cover here, and who they mention as the first time they’ve had a fourth creative partner when discussing making Phonetics On and On. But it’s just as clearly also the band going back to other inspirations; if the presence of Steve Shelley and Lee Renaldo on the debut suggests it was in a sense their ’Sonic Youth record,’ a few other acts mentioned when they were picking records at Amoeba in 2022 loom larger here; Young Marble Giants and the Feelies. The dual guitars chime and jangle rather than churn, even the drums are recorded (and played) more sparsely, although with just as much drive.

In some places the results are still close enough in feeling that it suggests that recording each of the two records in the “style” of the other would be a fascinating experiment. But sometimes it does lead Horsegirl further afield, in productive way. The precise, bass-and-synth calm of love song “Julie” is punctuated by little snarls and curlicues of guitar that they replaced the original, fuller part with. Versions of Modern Performance was not exactly short of memorable hooks but the more straightforward sound here renders them poppier until something like “Well I Know You’re Shy” comes close to the likes of Plumtree. And even the cycling, circling highlight “Switch Over,” which otherwise could fit right in on the debut, gets a whole different feel from the increased clarity of the guitars. Two preternaturally accomplished, sonically distinct albums in, it’s hard not to wish Horsegirl would go back to either territory for the next album. But as this rate, if they venture somewhere totally different, that will be worth following too.
