You know which character I wasn’t expecting to like as much as I do?

Xander McClure

In season one I was pretty ambivalent towards him. I felt for him when he lost his dad, I called him an idiot when he was on his revenge kick, but I never really disliked him, because I understood where he was coming from. I liked his friendship with Ben and the fact that he defended Ben against Calvin (who I most certainly do not like)

...but now in season two, I dunno, he’s just really grown on me. I think it’s because they’re starting to branch out his relationships with the other characters, especially Maddie. I love the notion of them as childhood best friends that maybe grew apart a little bit but now are being pulled back together by all the craziness going on in Bristol Cove. I love that, it’s a trope that is near and dear to my heart, having characters with history reconnecting and remembering the happy times they spent together.

Personally, I headcanon Maddie as being a year younger than Ben and Xander, which would kind of explain why Ben and Maddie didn’t really know each other well during school, but Maddie and Xander knew each other because Dale and Sean (and by extension Patti) were friends. We already know that Dale would have Maddie stay with the McClure family when he had to go track down Susan when she disappeared, and Susan herself called Xander Maddie’s best friend.

I mean, picture it. A young Maddie and Xander sprawled out on a beat up couch watching bad old movies, probably horror movies because Maddie seems like the type of kid that would have liked old horror movies. And honestly, Xander doesn’t like horror movies, they wig him out, but 1) he’s not gonna admit that Maddie is braver than he is (even though she totally is and they both know it) and 2) they keep Maddie’s mind off of her mom, and the possibility that tonight is the night that Dale finds her too late, so Xander puts in the tapes without Maddie even having to ask and winds his hands into the blanket so he can pretend he doesn’t jump every damn time a zombie pops out of a bush. And as the hour grows later and Dale still hasn’t come back and Maddie starts to worry more and more, Xander starts keeping a running commentary of abuse against the movies, just so that Maddie will argue with him and not turn inwards and focus on all of the things that actually scare her. 

And when Dale finally makes it back to the McClure house, the sun just starting to rise and Susan safe at home (for now), he and Sean find the two of them sound asleep, legs tangled together and most of Xander’s blanket thrown over Maddie, the TV humming softly with static. And Dale thanks every deity he knows for Xander McClure as he picks up his young daughter and carries her out to the car.

And I don’t think this stops when they’re teenagers, either. When Maddie just can’t take it anymore, when she comes home and finds Susan listless on the couch, eyes glazed over and speech slurred from the drugs, I think she goes to the place that has always been her harbor in the storm. And Patti welcomes her, and Sean too if he’s there, and Xander doesn’t say a damn word, not even if he had plans, not even if he had wanted to go down to the docks and fuck around with Calvin and Chris. Instead he just flops down on his bed and throws the remote to Maddie and offers her his extra pillow when she comes to sit. And they’d stay like that for hours, shoulder to shoulder, watching people get eaten by zombies and haunted by poltergeists. Xander still jumps and Maddie teasingly offers to hold his hand. Eventually the teasing falls out of her offer and Xander’s hearts flips when she laces their fingers together. And when Dale comes to collect Maddie after his shift, he and Patti find them sound asleep, hands still wrapped together, and Dale once again thanks the Creator that Maddie has a friend like Xander that she feels safe enough to lean on.

We know canonically that Maddie and Xander have slept together. I personally headcanon that they were each other’s firsts. Oh, Xander had totally told Calvin and Chris that he got lucky with that cheerleader from Camden Heights, but he had really only gotten to second base. And maybe one night Maddie comes bursting into his room, tears in her eyes, because she just can’t take it anymore, can’t take coming home from school and finding her mother lolling on the couch with a needle beside her. And she throws herself into Xander’s arms and he holds her while she rages into his chest, tears soaking his shirt, and his heart is breaking because Maddie Bishop is the strongest person he knows and he hates seeing her in pain like this. So he does the only thing that he can think of.

He kisses her.

He kisses her and she kisses him back and suddenly her hands are under his shirt and she’s kicking the door closed and pushing him back towards the bed and they fall onto it together and Xander’s heart is racing like one of those hummingbirds that Maddie made him watch a documentary about one night, but it’s the good kind of scary, and when Maddie quietly whispers that she’s never done this before he’s so insanely grateful that that girl from Camden Heights was saving herself for marriage, because the way Maddie’s eyes soften when he admits he hasn’t either is worth every case of blue balls ever.

They never put a label on it, but they’re together for a while, even though you wouldn’t be able to tell because nothing really changes. But then they graduate and Xander starts working on the boat more and Maddie is caught up with online classes and they slowly drift apart. A couple of years down the road Maddie gets with Ben and Xander is happy for her, because Ben makes her smile and laugh and even if his heart aches a little bit sometimes, it’s a good kind of ache. Because all he has ever wanted is for Maddie Bishop to be happy, and if that means dealing with mermaids and committing ecoterrorism, then he’s willing to do it. For her.

Genevieve McClure : Listen, Gen's my baby as much as she's @genevievemd Sara's and I have sworn to protect G with my last breath. I love how she's so full of love despite all the difficulties in her life and as someone who gives her everything to people I love, I relate wildly with G in this aspect. Gen also feels so real to me with her little quirks and beautiful backstory that Sara has woven makes her even more perfect.

Meera Bose : @headoverheelsforramsey Sruti's MC Meera is so unapologetically herself that you can't help but love her. As someone who is immensely proud to be a Bengali and keeps talking about her heritage to whoever would listen, Meera is like a touch of home in tumblr to me. I love how she's the very definition of Beauty with Brains and honestly the way M has made her place in my heart in just a few months is testament to what a wonderful character she is.

Lilac Allende : @jamespotterthefirst Bree's Lilac was the first MC that I was introduced to, she's beautiful, badass, with a rich heritage and is also someone who can fight for herself without needing a man to stand up for her, also fellow Potterhead, that pretty much sealed the deal for me. Also I love her relationship with her family (a thing about which I have badgered Bree so many times) which I value a lot.

Chiara Ray : @terrm9 Terr's MC is another favorite because of how peaceful she makes me feel. She's beautiful, kind, has an amazing humour and is the kind of person I aspire to be. I love how Terr shows the way her father and brother's loss has shaped C as a person and I love her relationship with Diana (her mom not my MC 😂), Alicia and Bryce. She's one of those people who is impossible to forget and that makes me love her even more.

Pooja Sharma : @monsoonblooms12 Manamee's Pooja is another of my favorite MCs. She's spontaneous, loves her siblings and an overall queen just like M💛. And our shared roots make me love her even more.

Inara Hepburn and Adalia Grace : Two of @satrangee-ray 's MCs and both Queens. I have only read one fic about Lia x Aurora and that made me fall in love with them also this a teensy tiny plea for you to write more about my favorite gals👉👈🥺 and next comes Inara, I love them and their roots in Kolkata and love for Tagore, two things that make up about 80% of me, so you can imagine how I felt about Inara when I read their meet my MC post.

Anna Michaels and Anna Valentine : @adiehardfan Pep's two MCs from Laws and Oph respectively. They are both amazing badass women who take their respective careers by storm and I love them both so much.

Anj Valentine : @lawyerlies Ayz's Anj is to put briefly a badass woman who still upholds her heritage even after all her growth as a doctor and a person. She's beautiful and amazing just like Ayz is.

Up for a sensible turn-of-the-century ghost story featuring Marie Antoinette, delightful 1910s slang and a dun-dun-dun style ending? Check out The Fifth of October by Mary Raymond Shipman Andrews, published in McClure’s Magazine in 1910.

The short story follows Alixe, a young American lady who has found herself running away to Paris after being spurned by the man she loves. While in France, a prince falls in love with her and asks for her hand in marriage. She can’t decide whether she should accept his proposal or wait, perhaps foolishly, for her American beau to make amends.

Her younger sister suggests visiting the hameau de la Reine the next day during the Versailles fountains show, when the estate is practically deserted, to think things over and Alixe agrees. But her daydreams about muslin dresses and shepherdesses are interrupted by a mysterious French woman wearing a delicate necklace of blood-red rubies...

Last weekend’s Times had interview w/Vicky McClure (I’m glad Line of Duty is back but I didn’t like the twist at the end of the 1st episode, I thought it was too close to what they did at the start of the 3rd series) + Ruby Tandoh (who’s done a zine about mental health).

They also had reviews of the new Shawn Levy book, Dolce Vita Confidential plus Carnage + The Walking Dead (I did read that apparently the viewing figures in the UK have dropped by 40% since the start of S7). They also mentioned there’s a new series of Fleabag planned. And Caitlin Moran wrote a beautiful piece about the death of her family cat.

MSTCA Speed Classic (Small School) Preview 2022

I AM BACKKKK !

To be honest I hate the word Small especially when we are talking about XC & TF. Yes Yes I get it, the criteria is the size of the school population. However I am a true believer it is not the size of the team or the competitor it’s the heart of the Champion, the heart of the warrior. This Sunday December 18th, 2022  in the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Center, the MSTCA will be hosting the 2nd part of the Speed Classic Weekend. The heartbeat of the assassin’s will be heard. There is nothing small about the competitors we will see the likes of starting in the

GIRLS 55H

Last time I saw my home girl from Auburn Massachusetts Katherine DeFosse she was 7th a year ago in the Meet of Champions with a time 8.75. Defosse comes in with the number one seed time, and looking forward towards a big race sunday. Coming out the Blocks with DeFosse will be Cam Travis from Hurdle U aka Plymouth South, recently it was Katrina Sullivan who has graduated and moved on to I believe Holy Cross.. Can someone in the comment section verify Back to Travis if you know Plymouth South they will be in the mix. 

Boys 55H

My Main Man from the North Shore Ean Hynes from Newburyport seeking to get the Clippers some valuable points down the road. This weekend look to see Hynes, be accompanied out the block by the O’Riorden Family (Sawyer) seeking to make a name for himself as older brother Tristen O’Riorden took his talents to Umass Lowell, look for Nashoba to be in the mix. Nolan Palmer more Hurdle U aka Plymouth South and Arman Araujo Wareham, Brennan Shea East Bridgewater will be in the hunt 

Girls 55

We will have an Ava VanBuskirk sighting, the talent out of Marlborough is going to have a big day with top times in the 55 & 300 Meters. North Reading’s Ava McIntyre & Kayla Bundy will be mixing it up with Pentucket girls off Sdyney Trout, Sage Smith, Resse Gallant. I would love to see Ruby Codrington out of Westwood shake this entire race up. 

Boys 55 

This weekend Small School Speed Classic no cliche will be won in the blocks, no clear cut winner just the entry seeded time. The number one seed coming into the meet is Julian Ram-Tylerbest out of Medfield with a time of 6.71, however sitting in 10th place is William Acquaviva from Newburyport, the Acquaviva has produced talent over the last several years don’t be surprise to see Will stick his nose into it this weekend. My boys from Littelton Tyler Castillo & Paul Neary, (Neary) Family salute will be representing Tracktown USA. Keep an eye of Jaiden Mcniss Nantucket, Yanni Kakouris Pentucket always a tough act and last but not least Chirs Oman from East Bridgewater.

Can Vanbuskirk break 41 sec in the 300 ?  How will Stroope & Felts from Newburyport respond ? Or will Maddie Grogan from Walpole be my sleeper athlete of the meet only time will tell that’s why we race

Michael Long representing the Long Family from Ashland, Mike has been working hard creating a name for himself, look for the TVL’s Finest seeking to dip below 36.. However, Tim Smith from Lunenburg and my main man Gabe Merrow are going to give Mike everything he is looking for, how gets the 200 first ?

This is going to be a good one… 400HH Specialists my home girl is back Giulana Ligor from North Reading, but she will be challenged by my other home girl who had an amazing XC Season look out for Mia Jilani from Milton. I see Caroline Collins is entered in this event, looking forward to see the Nashoba Junior race, watch out for Pope Francis Brenna Sears

Maybe the race of the day we shall see. School Record Holder Senior Extraordinaire my main Man Zach McClure from Lunenburg will have his hands full with the likes of Samuel Secor from Bromfield and Evan Cherry from Littleton.  Winner runs sub 1:24
