what do you think of the recent chapter of oshi no ko?
Hi!
You can find my thoughts on chapter 134 here. As for chapter 135, my thoughts have not changed to be honest. I like the focus Ruby and Kana's friendship is having! For Kana, it is the chance to explore her own darkness, while for Ruby it is a way to empathize with Ai. There are 2 thematic points to this movie:
For the real Ai to come to life > it is a meta way to explore Ai and what she means for all the characters. Ai is the ultimate idol, so nobody really knew her. Not her friends, not her family. Throughout the movie every character is facing this ghost and coming up with their own interpretation of her. The end product (the movie) will probably answer the question: "Who was Ai Oshino?"
For Ruby and Aqua's story to have a different ending than Ai's. This is the final goal of the series. Thematically, Aqua and Ruby are Ai's second chance, so they should re-live the same story, but change the ending.
The current chapters are clearly conveying this ideas.
On the one hand Ruby is empathizing with Ai:
On the other hand Ruby and Kana's relationship won't end up like Ai and Nino's:
Other than this, the current chapter sets up two other ideas.
1 - The idea of growing up
The Director still sees Kana and Ruby as the children he tried to care for:
Still, they are already grown up:
Aqua choosing to take a step back instead of meddling with them is in itself an aknowledgement of their growth. In the beginning, Aqua would always insert himself in the narrative, manipulate things from the shadows and help others. For example, he protects Ruby from the idol industry and helps Kana shine. Right now, though, he chooses to trust them.
2 - Aqua is the one who sees Ai the least (probably)
Ruby (thanks to Kana) is able to see Ai as a normal girl. Aqua is instead idolizing her. This means that deep down he doesn't see Ai as her own person, but as an idealized image. Of course, this has a double meaning:
Aqua is Ai's fan, so he puts her on a pedestal like her other fans (including characters like Nino and Hikaru, who hurt her)
Aqua is Ai's son, so he doesn't see her objectively, but as a perfect person
This final point is important because to grow up a child needs to break their parents' pedestal. Ruby is slowly doing it:
While Aqua is still far away from it.
Thank you for the ask!

English is not my native language, so my phrasing might seem a bit odd, but it would be such a shame if this amazing work and its words went unnoticed. I've shared similar sentiments on forums in China, and it truly delights me that different languages can resonate with each other. I've also shared your other insights with my friends, which have greatly enriched our analysis of the plot.
I firmly believe that behind 'oshino ko' lies a tender story, so I always approach the characters' motivations with kindness. For instance, Hikaru's ruthless actions, though extreme, I suspect stem from his devotion to AI, possibly tied to mysterious deities or even a ritual sacrifice to revive AI. I wholeheartedly agree that upon realizing AI's deep affection for him, Hikaru would cross his final boundaries for her and their child, perhaps marking the moment when Aqua and Ruby fulfill AI's wish to save him. This anticipation fuels my eagerness for the next comic update.
I also admire your perspective on AI—a timid, clumsy, yet resilient girl. Despite her tragic past, she perseveres for those she cares about, albeit with methods that may seem skewed. Hearing AI's mention of wanting to bear a child on the DVD deeply touched me, as it's a profound extension of her feelings for Hikaru. It's unfortunate that the original work doesn't delve into their interactions, but your work beautifully captures my imagination of this couple, portraying their intricate, everyday affection with remarkable finesse.
Furthermore, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the twins being stillbirths. It's intriguing that Serena passed away four years before AI gave birth, and AI's death occurred four years later, leaving room for speculation about deeper connections.
Once again, I apologize for my jumbled language, but I truly wanted to express how your work has ignited passion in a reader across the ocean."

This ask is AMAZING, anon! What do you mean your language is all jumbled? You're even better at English than I am!! I love love love how it's written, I feel like I write too casually sometimes and it's very refreshing to see a message written in such delicate and carefully coined phrases, I feel it's written really well. It sounds considerate and calming! Ah, this ask was the first thing I read this morning, and I'm really happy about it, thank you for your kind words and thoughtful insight. I've been getting a few really positive comments about my hikaai works lately and it feels like gifts. I feel it's a good thing that I've decided to create and put it out there thanks to you all, it fuels my love and passion and keeps me going, I'd like to tell you and everyone I appreciate it coming so much! I feel so lucky, it warms my heart... :)
Wow! I never realized my work had been reaching people in China as well, that is so exciting to hear! It's quite hard to imagine who'd be seeing my stuff and how far it could reach... you're very welcome! Good to know it's been reaching you and your friends, and it makes me grin so wide to hear it's even enriched your insights regarding the plot... really? Is that true? That's amazing!
Yes yes yes, totally agree with the second paragraph: could be wishful thinking but still, I'd like this story to be a kind and fulfilling one in the end. There are some very dark themes spread here and there, but I think the story is ultimately about "love" and passion. Moving into the light. I agree with your take, I feel like Hikaru's actions stem from his devotion towards Ai. He.. used to be really soft. The only thing that'd change him to take some extreme measures and become more ruthless(if he's ever been so) would be his desperation towards Ai and her well-being. I believe he really does love her that much. If he's someone she's loved so much, I feel he'll eventually understand her true wishes too. Love is a very powerful thing..!
I'm honestly really nervous before every new chapter drops, I'm scared of being proven wrong if I am... you see, I'm even prepared to take down my works if what I've come up with ends up to be entirely false! But I keep drawing out of spite and determination through it all because there are things I think I can see. You have no idea how worried I am about my theories~~ ;v;.. I feel I'm going in the right direction, it should, it should be this way, right? Ai was so loving and it's not something that just sprouts from nowhere... I'm convinced, but the fact that there are a lot of things that remain unclear's unsettling in the first place. I've got mixed feelings! I want to see things unfold and get it over with, and I also find myself being a bit relieved when there's hiatus. Haha ;v; getting these asks's been helping me because I know I'm not alone with my interpretations!! Let's root for it together! I'm crossing my fingers~
Third paragraph YES! couldn't agree more on that as well! Ai is a great character. She's so human with human flaws and weaknesses and insecurities, but she's also so strong. I'd be so proud of her if she's really existed, I'd give her a big hug and tell her she's tried her best and endured so much for the sake of others. What Ai expresses in the video is so powerful. He's the one she wants to have a child with, that's HUGE... and so tender. She wanted to keep them because she wanted to stay with him forever and that's like one of the biggest love confessions someone could make towards another. She liked him that much, so I feel they would have felt happy together for her to feel that way towards him. Having a family would have meant so much for Ai, she's a very hurt person inside and he was the one person she chose, after all she's been through. There MUST have been things about him she loved dearly enough to convince her "yes, this is the guy I want a future with, I want his kids. I want to stay by his side forever and carry everything as a couple together". Thinking about that makes me feel really tender inside and it makes me want to appreciate this couple. That's.. really wholesome. She doesn't feel that being with him would be bad for her, quite the contrary. So I draw them that way, with them sharing some precious moments together. I think that'd be the truth of how their relationship would have been. I can't create from scratch- I always need something from the original work to work from when I draw out a fancomic, and what I've been drawing's mostly been created through rearranging and being more descriptive of what's already there! Most of it's really what exists in the piece, with just a little bit of my imagination to help it slightly develop. I look back at the comic a lot as I draw, but I feel I could get bolder and explore things more, thanks to your positive feedback. Thank you very much!
Fourth paragraph, Yes!!// I really get fixated on the specific parts of the plot and I'm not very good with every detail (it's not that I don't understand, but I focus most of my analyses/energy in the areas I feel really passionate about) but what you mentioned is something that's made me ponder at least once. I have two theories about this: one being realistic and one having fantasy elements- but they may interconnect with each other.
I was surprised when I first read that Ai's children were originally going to be stillbirths without souls..; If her children with Hikaru were born lifeless, that'd have hurt her immensely. It'd have been so sad;; So Tsukuyomi essentially saved Ai as well, along with the two souls who were reincarnated as them, by helping them meet with each other like that.
The realistic explanation on why Ai's children could have been stillborns, I think, would be that she was constantly under a huge amount of stress with a lot welled up inside her. She was going through a lot of pressure, her group members left her feel isolated, she had to meet expectations, and she had to decide to leave a relationship she really wanted to stay in. I think there's a part in the movie arc where they say Ai had a lot of anger within her too. Feelings like that can take a toll on your body, and it could have affected her kids.
Another theory (the one with fantasy elements) I have is that Ai might not have been able to have children with souls to begin with, because she was originally not a human but an inanimate being-a star-a god. She wasn't meant to have children because she must return to the stars and the ocean once her duty's been fulfilled? But another divine being, Tsukuyomi, who's in charge of the fate and souls of people, could have taken pity on Ai's situation as a fellow god and helped her safely have her children and experience the love she wanted before her life ends.
I have written out some speculations on this aspect and a comic based on this idea, Tsukuyomi could have been Ai(and Hikaru)'s colleague or acquaintance. She may have picked out the two souls that could really love and help her, as the god of fate.
Since she's the god who guides fate(and souls too, conveniently)Tsukuyomi could have been able to figure what may happen to Ai and prepared things in advance. That's the only explanation I could come up with for the time being!
If this is the case, Tsukuyomi would be one of Ai and the twin's biggest ally. I feel she's a character who means well, although she does get pushed around by the twins XD she adores them. I say..maybe in a way an aunt would to their nephews(if she really is an acquaintance of their parents in some way which I HOPE SO? it makes sense her to do them favors and such if she is??)
The reply got so long!! I hope you don't mind! and this BETTER not get lost as I publish;; I want to keep this ask too~ Please, feel free to share about my works ;v;)/ I'm more than happy to learn it's been read by fans who are very passionate about onk, and with delicate attention and care. Having you expressing these feelings to me matters!! Please, no apologies. It's perfect the way it is and I love it! It means so much that you care and found things to enjoy about them...it makes it all worth it. I'm glad I'm able to make something that could do that for someone.
I'd love to come up with more things we can enjoy together!! 'v')9 Let's have fun till the end! Hope you have a good weekend and hope to see you around!

favorite oshi no ko character/s and why?
Hi!
I love all the main characters, but there are two I would call faves.
Ruby Oshino
Ruby's arc is probably the best surprise of the series tbh. Especially, because she is initially not focused on to the point it seems difficult she can reach the same level of complexity as Aqua or even Kana. And yet... she does! And she has one of the best developments imo.
I love Ruby's arc because it takes less space than Aqua, but it is incredibly powerful, which in a way mirrors her personality. Ruby is incredibly emotional and passionate. She feels both negative and positive feelings to the max. So, it is really no surprise she goes from being one of the most optimistic and hopeful characters to one of the most opportunistic and vengeful. Her DarkRuby phase shows she can be just as smart as Aqua and brings to the light all Ruby's repressed trauma.
The way she recovers thanks to Aqua and the discovery he is indeed Sensei is one of my favourite moments in the series. Not only that, but after facing Sarina, she is slowly starting to face Ai. The way she struggles with her mother's persona is beautiful and a wonderful way to explore both Ai and Ruby's feelings over her. Ruby is very empathetic and is clearly starting to understand her idol mother more.
In short, she is a highly traumatized character, who still chooses love, empathy and hope, whcih I find beautiful.
Akane Kurokawa
Akane's arc is less complex than Ruby, Aqua or even Kana's arcs. Still, everything about her is very well made, starting with her introduction. Akane's introductory arc might be one of my favourite in the series. It starts by focusing on Akane's spiral and by presenting her as unable to keep up with the others. So, it is brilliant how things get completely turned around in the finale, when we discover Akane is really a genius actress.
The executions is perfect and really peak writing imo. Not only that, but her whole introduction tells us what Akane's main conflict is about... She is so used to play characters she lacks a real personality. Not only that, but she is so good at acting precisely because she buries her real self deep inside, to the point she loses contact with her real wishes and emotions. This is why she initially fails in the reality show. She is asked to show her real self, but she can't because she doesn't know who she really is.
Akane lives in lies, be it her Ai-personality or her love story with Aqua. I think that a great conclusion for her would be to show others who she truly is.
Thank you for the ask!

Pick 10 characters from 10 fandoms and tag 10 people. Now my problem is, which fandoms do I deem important enough...?
1) Homura Akemi, Puella Magi Madoka Magica 2) Misao Kusakabe, Lucky Star! 3) Azusa Nakano, K-on! 4) Shinka Nibutani, Love, Chuunibyou, and Other Delusions! 5) Ruby Rose, RWBY 6) Hibiki, Kantai Collection 7) Sakuya Izayoi, Touhou Project 8) Yuki Nagato, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 9) Ougi Oshino, Monogatari series 10) Nonon Jakuzure, Kill la Kill
Oh would you look at that? Nearly half this list is KyoAni. Not to mention that these are all girls from anime and Japanese video games (except Ruby). Very clean
I’m not tagging anyone. If you see this and want to do it, feel free to do so.

Hello again! It seems like I'm disturbing you once more with my rusty English.Thank you very much for your kind wishes. I sincerely hope you have a wonderful and relaxing weekend as well!.Honestly, it was my first attempt at communicating with a foreign friend, and receiving such warm and inclusive words truly thrilled me. Unfortunately, my limited vocabulary struggles to encapsulate this feeling, but undoubtedly, I'm overjoyed by your thoughtful response.
The intricacies surrounding twins, AI, Hikaru, and deities are indeed fascinating when pondered upon. I eagerly anticipate whether your speculations will be validated in the subsequent narrative.
By the way, your latest analysis deeply resonated with me. I wholeheartedly agree that Hikaru embodies a gentle and non-aggressive nature, almost to a fault where his mildness can seem self-inflicted cruelty. He consistently takes the blame first, evident in Airi's family matters and his breakup with AI. It's inconceivable for such a person to avoid a meeting after AI's request, solely preoccupied with the "not getting back together" aspect, and then losing control to the point of inciting rabid fans against her. Coupled with inconsistencies in his conversations with Aqua, I firmly believe there's a twist in the AI assassination narrative involving Hikaru.
Hikaru's every appearance is intertwined with children, from his fleeting encounter at the cemetery, investment in films, meeting with Aqua, and even subtly mentioning Ruby during his drink with Yura. His joy is palpable during encounters with Ruby and Aqua, manifested in the slightly tilted umbrella, the post-storm white star, his gentle touch, and heartfelt praise during Aqua's interview. It's hard not to imagine how long Hikaru has secretly kept tabs on them and subtly aided them.
Details in the film suggest Hikaru may have lacked parental attention and love. If the theory of AI's death being a lie holds true, this abandoned, hurt boy committing a sin (temporarily considering Yura's incident as for AI's sake) and bearing all responsibility, facing judgment from the child he cherishes (secretly), all to ensure her offspring can move on and live well, paints an overwhelmingly impactful image of a father contrasting AI. Though unlikely, I cherish the fantasy of witnessing such a scene in future Oshino Ko chapters.
While Hikaru is inherently gentle, his rise in the entertainment industry necessitates a certain edge. I eagerly anticipate his defensive posture as he encloses the children within his protective circle, perhaps akin to the hen in Eagle Catches Chicken, safeguarding Aqua and Ruby.:)
Your closing remark left me speechless once more. In the discussions I'm part of, seldom do I encounter benevolent interpretations of Hikaru. Here, you've replenished my Kamiai energy with your gentle words, a true testament to your warmth as a writer. It's magnificent!
Regarding Taiki, his absence in recent chapters post the film's completion, coupled with Kindaichi's frequent comparisons to Aqua, intrigues me. As Hikaru's biological child, he might play a pivotal role in the unfolding story. What are your thoughts?Looking forward to your reply!❤️
It's never something that'd disturb me to receive kind messages like yours, don't ever fear! I just wish I had more energy the way I used to! It could take some time for me to get back because I need time to process, sit down, and be in good condition to think clearly and focus well! Bear with me, please! 'v')9 Thank you for your understanding in advance!
Oh, really?/// Wow, I'm truly glad to hear you were thrilled! First times can feel nervous and scary. Good to know what I've written could help you feel more at ease with things, I was happy to receive such a long and thoughtfully laid out ask earlier as well. So I was your first attempt talking with a foreign friend!// There are so many people out there in the world... it feels special on my end too, to have been somebody's first memory. Hope you keep having a lot of "first times" that brings a smile to your face!
I wonder if you're aided by a translator,(that's nothing to be ashamed of by the way; I've made a habit of using it to help me all the time too to see if I can write up something better!!) if you are, you're using a very good one, I feel it's conveying how carefully you've been laying out your thoughts. What you're writing feels very organized to me and the vocabularies are good. I feel like my vocab's pretty limited, I find no problems with yours at all! In fact, I like the words you're using. It reminds me yeah.. those words and quotes exist, and I can use them, huh! ;v; I am overjoyed too~ to find someone who shares similar ideas and theories is a blessing!! 'v')/ there are people who are like that and when that happens, they are for keeps. uvu)b
Okay, let's get to the analyses part of your ask,
RIGHT??? Oh gosh.. I think I'm confident about my thoughts, one moment I'm SO SURE, so I start writing and drawing comics, and then, I become shy and unsure and- gaH I hope my thoughts do get validated. I keep finding more and more things that I feel could back it up. It just.. feels like a better story for me that way as well! Come on, Ai really liked this guy and he did too and they only realized it after like 15 years after her death, what's the point of making him her murderer, what good does it bring to the narrative? 'Don't trust people'? 'find better people to love'? 'people with childhood trauma can't find someone good to love'? No, I want this to be about genuine love in the end. The backstories these characters had were so harsh on them already and it made them suffer, it shouldn't end that way, since the work is fiction, it's possible because this is a "story", not some documentary that displays the cruelty of life.
I usually get really strong hunches regarding the emotional aspects of a narrative when I get invested in something, and...they are rarely proven wrong. I think I've understood what it is.. What these characters have should have been portrayed differently if what's been shown should have been just taken at face-value.
I'm a little confused about the part about the eagle and the hen, but I understand what you mean for everything else you're talking about and yes.. ;v;) I don't have so much to add on because that's how I feel as well on most part! Oh REALLY? there's seldom any interpretations that try interpreting him in a more compassionate light, huh? I can see that happening because the first time we see him, he is in front of a dead body going it's his fault. And we had Aqua being so sure his dad would be the culprit from the very beginning. That's set a pretty firm image of what kind of character he'd be to the fandom (and it may end up being true?;; maybe?) but I find so many things that could contradict it. It makes more sense for me if it does, and it's not like I favored him and decided I wanted him to be good no matter what, I just watched by and found things. And I keep finding things.
I did get inquiries about the subject on Taiki once and I refrained from answering because it's just painful to think about. It's not Taiki's fault, but he is a child born out of rape and, I don't feel Hikaru should hold any responsibility or have the obligation to form a certain bond with him. Enforcing that to him would be so cruel. It's not something I want to dive too deep into thinking about, because think about it, would you want to meet your "child" that you had no control over upon having? Do you have to do it? It depends on the person but.. it's really up to them. He was terribly young when that happened as well. That's why I never discuss that aspect, it just hurts trying to bring it up. Taiki's a source of trauma for the guy, despite him having grown really well. Perhaps Hikaru's kind enough to do that, I actually don't see him being that aggressive towards anyone at all including him, but, you see how despaired he was in 153. His reaction towards it was also something along the lines of "Do I have to(carry the burden)?" I feel the same way about that. He does not. They do not have to have any interactions with each other.
I'm really sorry, but I don't want to think about this subject at all. It can happen, or it may not, but it's distressing to just think about, for me. I don't think that's something that can be brought up that lightly. Of course, on that regard, Ai's death is too (this manga is so dark;) but that's an area where everything starts stemming out from and I don't even think her boyfriend's responsible for it.
Sorry to end this ask on a depressing note; that part of the story is just horrifying for me though. When I make fanworks, I try to match my feelings to how the characters may feel in order to make accurate portrayals... some of the characters in this manga, I purposely block out from diving too deep into their mentality because it gets really, really painful. Ai and Hikaru's like that (Aqua too, and Ruby also, but I don't draw Ruby so often ;v;).. I want to know how they feel, at the same time, I feel that there's a border that'd make me get really depressed if I cross it, so I back out from it sometimes. What they experienced is so real, even though it's not shown so much on-screen and is only implied in as few panels. You may want to ask the other fans of the fandom about that topic, they may give a pretty insightful answer, but I really can't try on this one because it makes me sad. It's really bad. Terrifying. It actually led me to think about the severity of the subject. I don't think the manga handled it too bad the way it did so far, because things like that can happen in real life and discussing the subject itself is not really a problem on its own. The important thing is HOW it gets handled. If the manga MAKES them have to interact, then that's when I'd actually find some problems with it.
I'll keep drawing and having fun!! I hope you do too!
lots of love, hope you have a great week!❤️❤️
