RubyConf AU 2019 - Melbourne

RubyConf kicked off on the evening of the 6th Feb with a delightful opening party at the Skydeck located on the 89th floor of the Eureka Tower!  

In addition to the fabulously friendly crowd, free-flowing beer & champagne, fancy foods, fun and frolics, etc., guests were also treated to a dramatic light show, as nature played out a most impressive lightning storm on cue.

The actual conference spanned the following two days at the Forum, with an after party on the Friday evening.  Attendees were offered a great variety of presentations delivered by talented speakers from the world over, including:

Nadia Odunayo

Nadia was exceptionally polished in her delivery of The Case of the Missing Method - A ruby Mystery Story. She treated us to a delightful, fast-paced Ruby Objects exploration, in the style of a detective novel starring herself as the ‘Deirdre the Detective’. The entire presentation was cleverly synchronised with perfectly timed slides, while injecting witty humour throughout. Her parents had flown over from the UK to see her present for the first time, and they looked super proud. While chatting with Nadia later, it transpired that Nadia lived in Neasden, London, around the same time that I did! Small world!

Other speakers included: Heidi Waterhouse, David Halesz, Tom Stuart, Daniel Fone, Laura Mosher, Kelly Sutton, Betsby Haibel, Tekin Suleyman, Merrin Macleod, Keither Pitty, Tim Riley, Mila Dymnikova, John Sawers, Elle Meredith, Tom Ridge, Tom Gamon, Kelsey Pedersen, Adam Cuppy, Beth Haubert.

Lookahead Search were one of the sponsors providing much needed caffeine hits from the coffee cart.

Compares Caitlin and Rose, entertained the audience between speakers with fun facts about Australian animals. The picture above is a Quokka, which is a marsupial I’d never heard of before!

The after party was within the same venue, and the vibe was set with dim lighting, a jazz band, and two open bars, and board games! Thus allowing ample opportunity to mingle with speakers and other attendees. That’s David Halesz above, he gave an awesome talk on how to hijack, proxy and smuggle sockets with Rack/Ruby!

Thanks to Pat Allan and his awesome team at Ruby Australia, the event was beautifully timed and orchestrated. Not a speck of dust out of place! As far as conferences go, this one was definitely up there as one of the best!

Maior festival hacker da América Latina acontece em novembro em SP

O Roadsec, maior evento sobre hacking, segurança e tecnologia da América Latina, comemora 5 anos do início do fomento da comunidade e cultura hacker no país promovida pelo festival, que já teve mais de 40 edições. No dia 10 novembro, em São Paulo, o evento terá sua mega edição comemorativa de encerramento da tour nacional, que em 2018 passou por 10 Estados. Com uma programação especial e ampliada, a edição de aniversário terá 24 horas de atividades e vai reunir os hackers, estudantes e profissionais de segurança da informação, em palestras interativas e inéditas.

Azeria, a keynote da programação, é pesquisadora independente de segurança, que com seu reconhecimento do papel central de ARM na proliferação da computação, avançou na segurança e defesa deste tipo de processador por meio do desenvolvimento de pesquisas de vulnerabilidade. Também é fundadora do Azeria Labs, para ajudar pessoas com interesse similar na diminuição da enorme ausência de material educacional sobre a arte da exploração de ARM por meio de workshops e tutoriais. Como destaque, também terá a participação da Georgia Weidman, empreendedora, pesquisadora em segurança e autora do livro Testes de Invasão: Uma introdução prática ao hacking. Recebeu o prêmio Women’s Society of CyberJutsu Pentest Ninja em 2015 e possui mestrado em Ciências da Computação. Também é fundadora da Bulb Security LLC, empresa de consultoria da área de segurança e testes de invasão.

Joe Grand, o lendário hacker Kingpin, vai comandar a palestra principal. Grand é especialista em criar, explorar e manipular dispositivos eletrônicos desde os anos 80, e integrou o famoso grupo hacker L0pht Heavy Industries, onde ajudou a fomentar a conscientização da pesquisa e divulgação de vulnerabilidades em segurança da informação. Também estará presente a Sofia Marshallowitz Desenvolvedora na Opice Blum, Bruno, Abrusio e Vaizonf Advogados. Atualmente é aluna de Engenharia de Informação pela Universidade Federal do ABC e de Direito pela Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie. Também possui certificações na área de segurança e acompanha o curso de Statistics and Data Science do MITx.

Uma novidade inusitada no ano, será a palestrante Manoela Meroti, de 10 anos de idade que começou a empreender com 6 anos vendendo pulseiras de elástico e quadros pintados a mão para as clientes do salão de beleza da mãe para comprar uma boneca. Atualmente trabalha em uma ideia para criar livros e jogos com os 17 temas da ONU. Ela é Criativista, Maker e Palestrante de empresas e eventos como Bradesco, Campus Party 2017/2018 e Microsoft DigiGirlz. Jurada Hackathon BlueHack IBM Desafio TJBOTs com Watson, participações Hackathon Womens Health, ganhadora do Hackanoel 2016 com a criação de um brinquedo social chamado Caça-Herói.

E também, Emmanuelle Richard, de 16 anos de idade, que atualmente cursa Ciências da Computação e trabalha em uma empresa de desenvolvimento de softwares como programadora. Aos 12 anos desenvolveu seu primeiro aplicativo e já palestrou em eventos como a Campus Party, Flisol, PhP Experience, RubyConf, Roadsec, mostrando a todos que programar é divertido além de ser uma atividade fascinante.

Simultaneamente, o público – que é formado por pessoas de todas as idades e gêneros, leigos ou não – poderá curtir atividades interativas como óculos de realidade virtual, pilotagem de drones por smartphone, montagem de circuitos de robótica, lock picking, caneta e impressora 3D e muito mais. A programação também irá contar com a banda pop paulistana Laikabot, que utiliza instrumentos musicais fabricados, modificados e hackeados pela própria banda e para acabar em festa, o festival de música que sucede a conferência terá a presença dos principais nomes do nerdcore mundial e nacional, como a dupla americana Dual Core, o rapper Edgar, e shows especiais do cantor Gabriel O Pensador e do Marcelo D2.
