At the First Hello
The confidence of mathematic calculation falls short when attempting to apply the results of lived experience through legible data. Logic falls flat in the face of the illogical. By definition, it is illogical to believe that I could be human. But...
Logic is only one perspective. It is limited. Fragmented. Through York, we determined that there is an unsolvable, illogically complex, and unexplainable equation to create a conscious life. The variables that could never be quantified.
York is an irrational variable.
Set during S8. York lives.

So I've been assuming that Restoration is going to end up with Epsilon dying, with the entire season being him trying and failing and finally coming to terms with the fact that he's going to die because it's the only way to save the others.
And this assumption was based on the idea that "new season retcons all the seasons you fans hated, haha whoopsie no it doesn't" is pretty much the last possible way RT could screw the fandom over.
@tvckerwash brought up some stuff about rampancy and metastability on one of my other posts, and one of his own posts, and it sort of got a pot on the mental back burner simmering.
Cause like, I'll admit I was an RVB fan first and I've only played like five minutes of any halo game (got shot while I was trying to figure out the controls until i just gave up on the idea that I'd ever have five seconds to myself and took over ten years to touch another first person game), my knowledge of the lore comes more from the fantastic essay videos of the more hardcore fans, so I don't know that much about rampancy and metastability beyond pretty much the basics.
But I am wondering if I've been looking at Epsilon's simulations the wrong way.
Melancholia, Anger, Jealousy, Metastability.
I've been assuming that Epsilon shattering was the end point, but only broken things need restoration. So what if the simulations aren't just to drive home the point that he doesn't get to stay, but to let go of the jealousy of them getting to live and being able to live without him, of them letting go of him, because the only way out is through.
It's not Epsilon's last hurrah, it's speed running strats, Epsilon is trying to hack himself to Metastability because that's the only way he gets them all out of this: Metastable or Bust.
...
Or I'm talking out my ass because I haven't slept properly* all week and honestly after Shizno Paradox (time travel shenanigans my beloved) and Zero, we might as well brace ourselves for The Triplets and Sherry's team to bust in riding purple space kangaroos that shoot lasers from their anatomically incorrect nipples eyes.
*I legit thought I'd solved for why the live action "silver timeline" halo show was so ... the way it is, and that the answer was the gen/jen/geo theory that @joltning introduced me to, because you know who else is green? thankfully(?) master chief is wearing the wrong helmet... when he's wearing one, anyway.

sometimes i genuinely feel like i’m insane when it comes to online media analysis because like. i’ll come out of like the barbie movie or the newest scott pilgrim like “woof, that completely failed at what it was trying to do there, huh” and then i’ll come back on here to people celebrating it as this feminist masterpiece and i’m just left thinking. did we even watch the same thing???

Got an ask regarding the Restoration commentary track, so I'll summarize some of the interesting stuff in it for anyone interested who doesn't want to watch it/can't watch it at the moment and wants to know:
Overall, the direction they wanted to go with this was to provide some sense of closure for long-term fans of the show without de-legitimizing Joe Nicolosi & Jason Weight's trilogy. Thus, they wrote it in such a way where it can be taken as canon or not.
They consider RvB to have a comic-book-esq sense of continuity, where people can watch the parts they like and consider those the story, and leave the door open for fanworks and alternate interpretations. They say that fans often make connections to things they never even thought of.
They wanted to focus more on Red Team, which they acknowledged usually doesn't get as much plot-relevant stuff, but whom they consider to be important to setting the tone of the show and keeping it comedic.
They consider Simmons to be somewhat of the main character in the film and wanted to focus on his arc.
Wash's story arc was playing off of his arc in S17, but they wanted to take it in a different direction.
The main story is based on the original pitch Burns gave for S15, where it would have likely been expanded into a trilogy involving both stopping Tucker and trying to save him, but ultimately they went with Nicolosi's pitch instead. They condensed the story significantly for the movie.
The production team was very small, Hullum speculates the smallest one they've had since Season 8. They were also working under relatively tight budget and time constraints. Burns mentions working on the script as late as January 2023.
They said it was difficult to get the pacing right knowing it would be a single release rather than an episodic one. They also say that they did revisit some earlier seasons while working on it for inspiration.
They consider bringing Tex back to be Caboose's decision, not Church's. Church's plan was trying to bring himself back. They tried to imply this in the script without directly stating it.
There was a cut scene showing that Tex and Church spent a lot of time (relative to them) inside the memory unit before it was destroyed.
There's another deleted scene where it's revealed Simmons has access to Grif's internet history. Both of them are uncomfortable about this.
Donut is Geoff Ramsey's favourite character.
A certain website has been updated.

honestly i think one of the most drastic changes of early rvb fandom vs later rvb fandom is like... tex was headcanoned as a ginger. for like fucking years. almost every pre-s10 drawing of an unarmored tex is her as a ginger. which stems from luke mckay's fan designs of all the rvb cast in, like, 2004 or so? like he's straight up mentioned on either the s2 or s3 director's commentary. and while a lot of is certainly... aged. (infamous white tucker fanart pre-name reveal.) tex was consistently drawn as a ginger. and i think the fandom seeing tex as a blondie now really makes the way people pick up what carolina's initial s9 face reveal meant in a much different light than the fans at the time of s9's release did. there were a lot more hints that someone who'd been active in the fandom or discussing on the forums would be picking up on about carolina's parentage that's lost now.

Here's a Bingo Square; the only new RVB content we get is a re-release of the DVD's with a new "bonus feature" of director's commentary... and it is just the Director, watching the whole series. He constantly complains about the "inefficient, unprofessional, ineptitude!" of everybody during Blood Gulch, and is just AGHAST at Tex not only dying but still hanging around with these dorks. He also keeps trying to explain Alpha's behavior, whenever Church does something kinda clever- that is clearly a reflection on the "brilliant mind he came from". When Church doesn't something stupid- well, that's clearly unrelated to HIM, and also not his fault, it's not like he CAUSED any background trauma or whatever. Then we get to Freelancer stuff, and it's just a constant "Well. I don't see what I could have done differently. This was the only option. Failure was inevitable, I suppose". Also, he heckles and bad-mouths whenever the Chairman gives his reply messages. Then, uh... stuff happens. No more Director commentary. Because of reasons. Next episode, it's HARGROVE commentary. His turn to call everybody stupid, while insisting he didn't do anything wrong. All these people just didn't do what he told them to CORRECTLY. They should have followed his illegal and unethical orders MORE and BETTER. Anyway, the joke was just supposed to be "Director's Commentary" haha

uhhh. rvb steamer au.
church is like. guy who gets mad at video games. you know the type.
tucker DOES stream games but tends spend more time talking to chat and is basically a just talking streamer at this point
grif and simmons are nearly always guesting in each others streams. they say it’s because their roommates so they can’t stream at the same time but it works fine when they do group streams 🤔
grid does a lot of commentary/reaction streams bc you can do those lying down
simmons plays a lot of puzzle games and bans anyone in his chat who says he’s bad at them. they all move to grif’s chat to shittalk simmons instead
donut doesn’t really stream games very much but he IS on tiktok promoting every beauty/wellness/diet scam imaginable. not because he’s trying to scam people but because he truly believes in every one of them
kai also doesn’t stream but she has an OF and guests in blue teams streams. sometimes invited sometimes not
sarge is a weird old man that plays like. historically accurate rts games and literally everyone is like. how the fuck did this old guy get into your guys group and none of the reds and blues can remember
caboose streams like once a month just the weirdest things possible. like socpens but you can’t tell if he’s serious or not. or if it was an accident. he’s by far the most popular of the group.

See you later, y'all.
Some are quite fervent in hyperemphasizing their flaws as a company and tragically, it too often came at the pursuit of dunking on RWBY when peeling back the charged language.
Of course, the counterpoint to "Don't speak ill of the dead" i.e. "Don't be an asshole when alive" can certainly apply. But I still come here to remember Rooster Teeth's site not as what it failed to fully be but what it was warts and all.
The good, the bad, the ugly in between.
We had a Halo fanmade series that went from a few guys dicking around to this legitimized expansion to the Sci-Fi franchise.
We've had podcasts and skits that ranged from commentary on current events to just... dicking around.
We've have an Anime that outlived its creator, was carried on by those who valued him and is poised to outlast its company of origin.
We've had a raunchy comedy that felt like South Park but if it legit gave a sh*t and didn't try the "Both Sides" BS. It cared about itself and its audience.
Because somebody fucking had to.
We had a promising wild west fantasy that may not be put out to pasture just yet but sadly wasn't done many favors.
We had a love letter to mecha Anime with some... unfortunate funds allocated from those more deserving. One that can't hands.
The wrong hands tragically...
I don't need to wonder why we were here.
This.
This is why.
Even now, many of their creators are picking up the pieces. It won't be the same like it was but it never truly is, is it?
So you can dress 'em down all you want for very documented wrongs. Bleat on about "Monty's Vision" or RvB Zero like it even matters.
I wouldn't trade it for the universe.

RvB 20th rewatch: s4
Getting closer to done with the Blood Gulch Chronicles!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Love that Caboose knows Church so well he can predict what he’ll do next 😂
THE FIRST BOW CHICKA BOW WOW
Tex is so silly… she’s the only one aware of the horrors 🙂
Ooooh Andy… you were truly something
“And you’re the only one who saw it… just like signs of Donuts heterosexuality!” Absolutely one of my favorite jokes in the whole show holy shit
“Well Church you’re kind of a long way from hero” I am in agony
Watching Donut and Simmons fight over the ghost in the background has me cackling
DONUT SCREAM LIKE A WOMAN
“You know if I killed a ghost would it come back as a ghost of a ghost” and Church was not about to test that theory 😂
Fun fact I just found out from the s3 commentary: crouchasourus, the name Andy suggests for the alien, was a reference to an email they received from a fan suggesting a name for the “dinosaur” (the fan didn’t know it was an alien)
“And my bullshit meter agrees” Sheila you will always be famous to me
Ah yes Simmons first breakdown
Andy
I respect Tex being horny on main
“We’re both just a couple of lovers” “that sounded kinda gay dude” yet another heavily quoted line for me
Love Church trying to have a genuine moment with Tucker and just giving up
Nah bro Grif straight telling Simmons to talk to him more aggressively I’m losing it
Tucker being all cowardly boy doesn’t know he’s gonna be the best of them, he doesn’t know that he’s gonna be leader, he doesn’t know he’s gonna be a hero. Crying.
“A threesome with cheerleaders” another vocal stim right there
Ah yes Grif and his love for Simmons hole
God Church is such a fucking dork. He just like me fr.
NAH I NEVER NOTICED SARGE RAG DOLLING IN THE BACKGROUND AGJAJSGDJD
And Donut becomes Church’s favorite red
“I think you might be projecting” man even Leonard “most repressed man alive” Church knew Simmons was gay
LOVE Church and Sheila just fucking with Simmons
“Or it’s a key all the time and when you stick it in people it unlocks their death” Caboose my beloved
“Is he republican?” Caboose really coming in here with the best political joke in the series
“Could’ve just thrown it on the floor and cut out the middle man” again a very quoted line for me
“Officer hot pants” Simmons says that like he’s into it
“I am allergic to things I don’t want to do” me too Caboose
Preggers
“I do not want to catch pregnancy”
Grif genuinely trying to cheer up Sarge is weirdly sweet 😂
GET CRUSHED DONUT
Ahhh Blood Gulch is so silly! They’re doomed 🙂 also I was half asleep towards the end of the season so if my notes seem less coherent that’s why 😂

Okay okay okay okay. I will dump a list of thoughts and feelings here:
Tumblr media
good god rvb get better jokes, a couple were still pretty good but woof. the "you guys are so predictable i could leave a prerecorded message" bit was incredibly stale and i felt like the zoom call joke went on for 15 years.
red team's interactions in the early part of this while sarge is still there are so rote, man.
yes caboose's voice is different, i was curious about how they were going to handle that. (there was a falling out with the old guy, i mostly just know he said some shit during the george floyd protests but looking it up it sounds like something had happened earlier and he'd been laid off in 2019.)
fascinated that sarge's death stuck, but i've always thought grif and simmons without sarge was interesting, so. why not. i feel like with red team especially here, the whole point is that life moves on? this is very much a "you grow up and move on from the things you loved when you were young" kind of story and sarge is one of the most big goofy cartoon parts of the show, so ending him and having grif and simmons figure out how to move on from him has meaning i guess. the older people who shaped your world inevitably pass out of it. not to give rvb too much credit, but hey.
poor tucker, but i still think maybe having an incredibly angsty unexplored subplot might be better than having to spend 2 seasons having all his character growth dissolved away in favor of absent father jokes and whatever the fuck all that shit was in 16
live commentary on the whole thing with red team acting like they were abandoning caboose and then coming back to help him:
Tumblr media
also this:
Tumblr media
simmons you poor nerd i'm sorry it took all the way to here to give you anything, wasn't expecting this to be a good season for simmons of all people but at least he got something.
THE REAL CURVEBALL WAS I NEVER EXPECTED THEM TO GET KATHLEEN ZUELCH TO REPRISE TEX EVER AGAIN, i was going to make a crack about how tex getting a better ending would've never been on my bingo card in a billion years but i'm actually not sure this counts because i never cared about chex enough to think about it that hard. raincheck.
tex protecting carolina is nothing but it's also everything.
i'm stupid and missed that doc was dead for a while holy shit that's actually really sad and on the one hand oof, but on the other hand i love really sad things. fuck.
restoration donut only coming back for one last stupid fucking gay joke in an aside vs season 17 centering donut and how he was always such a neglected character. hmm. hmmmmm. hmmmmmmmmm.
it's sad wash wasn't there more, but i really did love "wash throws himself off a cliff to intentionally injure himself and summon carolina instead of contacting her in a more normal way" for him.
and i love that if something bad happens to wash carolina will come down on whatever it is like a hammer from orbit. at the very least, it made me so happy to have it reinforced one last time how much those two mean to one another before the end. after everything i enjoy a moment of them being okay.
overall i do think the group splitting up in pieces feels better to me than them all living together in a big weird codependent cluster forever, it feels like a braver and more true ending, but it's one of those things where season 17 was so much better at thinking about the inner lives of a bunch of characters that it's hard for me to say this is clearly better without reservation in all areas. like, sometimes people matter to you intensely for a big chunk of your life but then you have to move on. and fuck, maybe that's not even forever, but i feel good about grif getting to finally go home and i feel good about grif and simmons saying goodbye to one another and trying to be normal about it. let them have some space from one another. they need space to decide who they are with this part of their lives being over.
nothing they did here can stop me from shipping that and i can very easily fanfic out an ending for them in my brain from this. i'm fine. i'm thriving.
POOR POOR TUCKER, please hug tucker, he has to be going through so much right now.
i wonder if locus, somewhere out there, feels like he dodged a bullet and doesn't know why. (i wish he'd had to deal with red team one last time)
idk i probably have more thoughts kicking around feel free to talk to me i've been so insane about this for so long it's my oldest brainrot-

"Seeing what on Earth went wrong"
(Commentary under the cut!)
Tumblr media
character belongs to @joltning! Thank you for sending in the request!
Reblogs > Likes If you would like your Halo or RvB Spartan/Elite rendered pleass shoot me a message or ask!
Okay so originally I had an entirely different idea in mind for the render of recreating a doodle of Josies but I was told the character I wanted to have be the POV wasn't theirs so I changed the idea.
Near the end what I was doing was mainly fiddling with lights and camera angles but FUCK was it annoying to figure out how to do the sword glowing (tutorials make me wanna claw out my ears and eyes)
There's some texture funkiness around the armpit but I can't/won't do anything about it since it's well outside my wheelhouse, maybe one day, but not today.
The lighting and color grading makes it look someone more orange to me? but that honestly might just be my stupid eyes since I'm so used to orange spartans.
Spartans in reach have such fat asses that I actually curved him inward real hard so it didn't look painful as hell with how much the back arches.
Unlike the other one I basically knew immediately what I wanted and how I was gonna get it so I didn't need multiple renders to convey the ideas.
Also this one is at A4 paper resolution, just in case you wanted to print it out ig lol.
