The Ox-Headed Heavenly King (Gozu Tenno), Part 2 - Life History

At the age of seven, this prince was already about 10 foot tall, with a 3 foot bull's head and red horns on the top of his head. When he ascended to the throne, he was known as "Gozu Tenno” meaning “Ox-Headed Heavenly King” [See: Part 1].

He succeeded to the throne and took the name Gozu Tenno, but when he tried to get an empress, not even the women would approach him because of his frightening appearance. The king began to spend his days drinking.

One day, when Gozu Tenno was out hunting in the mountains, a mountain dove, which could speak human language, appeared and told him that it would lead him to the daughter of Shahgara Ryuoo (Naga), who lived in the ocean. Gozu Tenno then sets off in search of a queen.

On his journey, he asked for a night's stay at the home of Kotan Chojya (a wealthy man), but was refused. Next, at the home of Somin Shorai (a poor man), they welcomed him, lent him accommodation and served him millet rice. Impressed by Somin’s kindness, Gozu Tenno bestowed upon him a treasure that would grant him all his wishes, and later Somin became a man of wealth.　

Later, Gozu Tenno married the daughter of the Dragon King and had eight princes (seven sons and one daughter : Ref).

On his way home, Gozu Tenno sent 84,000 of his kinsmen to take revenge on Kotan. He gathered a thousand priests and had them recite the Mahaparinirvana Sutra for seven days and seven nights, but they failed when one of the priests fell asleep, and all of Kotan's dependents were kicked to death.

At that time, when Somin asked for help because he had a daughter in the house of Kotan, Gozu Tennoo ordered him to put a thatch, a ring and a tag saying 'Descendants of Somin Shorai' on his daughter's belt as a sign, and only Somin's daughter was able to escape.

牛頭天王（ごずてんのう）その２～生い立ち

この太子は、7歳にして身長が約３m、頭頂には約１m の牛頭と赤い角があった。王位に就くと「牛頭天王（ごずてんのう）」と称された【その１】。

太子は王位を継承して牛頭天王（ごずてんのう）を名乗るが、后を迎えようとするものの、その姿形の怖ろしさのために近寄ろうとする女人さえいない。牛頭天王は酒びたりの毎日を送るようになった。

ある日、牛頭天王（ごずてんのう）が山野に狩りに出ると、人間のことばを話すことができる一羽の山鳩があらわれ、大海に住む沙掲羅龍王（しゃがらりゅうおう：八大龍王）の娘のもとへ案内すると言う。そして牛頭天王（ごずてんのう）はお妃を求めて旅に出る。

旅の途中、巨端長者（こたんちょうじゃ：富豪）の家に一夜を求めたが断られ、次に蘇民将来（そみんしょうらい：貧民）の家では歓待して宿を貸し、粟飯を振舞った。蘇民の親切に感じ入った牛頭天王（ごずてんのう）は、願いごとがすべてかなう牛玉（ごおう：宝物）を蘇民に授け、のち��蘇民は富貴の人となった。

のち、牛頭天王（ごずてんのう）は、龍王の娘と結婚して八王子（七男一女の王子：参照）を儲けた。

帰路についた牛頭天王（ごずてんのう）は八万四千の眷属（けんぞく）を差向け、巨端への復讐を図った。巨端は千人もの僧を集め、大般若経を七日七晩にわたって読誦させたが、法師のひとりが居眠りしたために失敗し、巨端の眷属はことごとく蹴り殺された。

そのとき「巨端の家には私の娘がいるので、助けて欲しい」と蘇民が頼むと、牛頭天王（ごずてんのう）は、茅と輪と『蘇民将来の子孫』と書いた札を娘の帯に目印としてつけさせよ」と命じ、蘇民の娘だけは難を逃れることができたという。

Ferrari Sets the Pace as Ultra-Luxury Performance Brand

Ferrari reached its 70th anniversary last year with unapologetic dedication to its brand promise: to appeal to a niche of ultra-luxury, performance car buyers with every bit of horsepower that the famous Italian marque can muster.

It’s actually a bold proposition in an era in which environmentalists and others tend to scoff at expensive machines whose main function is to blow the doors off slower and less-capable hunks of metal. But that’s Ferrari, then, now and, presumably, forever.

Take the brand’s continuing dedication to full-throated, petrol-powered racing at a time when other formidable racing brands, such as Audi, are pulling back. Since 1950, Ferrari’s Formula 1 racers have won 224 Grand Prix titles and dozens of others in a world in which speed and agility—the characteristics that Ferrari owners also want in their vehicles—dominate.

Founded in 1947 by Enzo Ferrari, the Italian masterpiece marque has become known as one of the world’s leading luxury brands, focusing on advanced engineering, sleek design and performance innovation. As customers and fans have embraced what Ferrari stands for, the brand also sells apparel and lifestyle accessories in dozens of exclusive retail stores worldwide.

The late Sergio Marchionne, who was Ferrari’s chief as well as CEO of Fiat Chrysler, oversaw the opening of Ferrari-themed amusement parks to support such heightened brand ambitions.

The first Ferrari, 125 S, was built for racing, and so has every Ferrari built since then, with the cars proving themselves on every raceway in the world and brand stewards able to convert that racing achievement on Sunday into sales on Monday to some of the globe’s most discriminating clients.

Fiat Chrysler Automotive spun off Ferrari in 2016, but the brand’s sales have continued apace, helped by marketing initiatives such as the 2017 Red Bull video that showed a Ferrari F40 making its way up a snowy mountainside at Ryuoo Ski Park in Japan.
