So in your opinion, is Yamamoto a hard-nosed bastard man by nature or by professional habit?
Yamamoto has the exact temperament of an over-disciplined and highly reactive guard dog.
He has had that which he loves destroyed before, so now he is EXTREMELY PROTECTIVE of it, to the point of irrationality actually*, and was over-disciplined for reacting in "undesirable" ways (i.e. Showing Affection) when he was young, so now the ONLY way he knows how to express that love is by that extreme protectiveness.
*Not that crazy- his behavior re: Rukia makes PERFECT SENSE if the G13's relationship with the C46 is antagonistic
There were other things Yamamoto wanted to do with his life, but he built the Gotei-13 from the ground up as a fortress for that which he loves instead. He could do nothing else until it was completed, but like all artists, there's always something else he could add to it, and unlike most artists, they can't take the canvas away from him because that's his house
Also, he bites
The primary reason Tsubaki leaves him is because he fundamentally cannot chill out. He cannot accept that he's been successful in creating that society he dreamed of, because he cannot persuade himself it won't be torn down again
Part of the reason he adores Komamura so much is that Sajin has THE EXACT SAME HYPER-PROTECTIVE INSTINCTS as Yamamoto, but he's got a better reign on them.
...because the first time Sajin tried to stop Kaname from going somewhere, Kaname went spare about how disrespectful that was (and maybe also kind of punched him in the nuts) and that event has proved a good check on Sajin's urges.
Sajin understands, perhaps more than even Shunsui and Ukitake, why Yamamotos is Like That, and also capable of delivering advice on "maybe we can chill about this" to him in a way he'll actually accept- Sajin is just as vigilant as he is and GETS IT, so if Sajin says it's okay to chill, it's probably okay.
Sajin also owns a dog, and somehow it has not occurred to Yamamoto that when your emotional support son/dog has their own emotional support dog, that maybe you're a little fucked up in the head.

BLEACH MEN AT THE BEACH
Tumblr media
Thank you to all who voted and helped me get these men a well deserved day out in the sun.
Individual close ups here!
I added Hisagi's face details and the birbs in the BG after I'd already processed the timelapse vid and I could not, for the life of me, do it all over again, soz
Also the vid made me laugh cos you can see how some men came up so quickly, even some I had never drawn like Komamura or Byakun, yet others (I'm looking at you RENJI OMFG!!) took so many tries and even then they are still wrong 😭 but that's ok cos I had so much fun
Lastly I wanted to let you all know just how long it took me to draw ALL of Shunsui’s hair. Lmao that man is a bear 🤣

Captains finding their S/O napping pt. 2
Tumblr media
A part 2 to this post: https://www.tumblr.com/xreaderdumpster/781451474897092608/captains-finding-their-so-napping this time with previous captains and Ichigo! Enjoy! Let me know if I should do a Lieutenant edition ☺️
Content warning: G/N reader and pure fluff
- Jushiro Ukitake: Absolutely adores his partner so finding you fast asleep would absolutely make his day! He’s the kind to take a photo on his soul phone (probably several). Jushiro would smile widely and stroke your hair, whispering how cute you were. If it was a bad health day and you napped in bed, he’d totally join you.
- Gin Ichimaru: Gin would initially be surprised that you’d fallen asleep so casually in the middle of the day. Would probably watch you for a while, just silently observing the rise and fall of your chest. After a while, he’d simply pat your head and leave.
- Sousuke Aizen: Walks in, not noticing you're asleep at first. Only when he hears a light snore or a sleepy sigh would he then acknowledge you’re there. So vulnerable, so sweet… He couldn’t let the Arrancars see you in this state. Aizen will lock the door behind him but not before reverently kissing your forehead.
- Sajin Komamura: At first, part of Sajin would worry that something was wrong. The half empty bottle of water meant you were hydrated, your forehead showed no sign of a fever. Maybe you were just tired. He’d sigh before curling up beside you. But he wouldn’t sleep like some of the others. His dog instinct would take over, watching over you while you slept.
- Retsu Unohana: A giggle would escape her as she realised how fast asleep you were. “Working hard I see, my dear.” She’d whisper gently to herself. Unohana would brush some hair out of your eyes before tucking you into the blanket and closing the door and leaving you. She’d make a mental note to come check on you in half an hour or so.
- Genryusai Yamamoto: Seeing you napping would make him grumble. You’d fall asleep at this time of day? Neglecting your chores and duties? But you did look peaceful. Anyone else, he would absolutely start shouting but he’s got a soft spot for his partners. A groan would leave his body as he settled beside you. Maybe a quick nap wouldn’t hurt.
- Kaname Tosen: Senses you were asleep the moment you didn’t reply to his question. At first, he’d want to wake you, ensure you didn’t upset Lord Aizen. But Tosin couldn’t. He’d gently lift your head before sitting beside you, resting your head against his soft lap. He wouldn’t fall asleep with you but he’d enjoy the peaceful sound of you breathing.
- Ichigo Kurosaki: Absolutely the kind to poke their partner to engage how deep asleep you were. When you didn’t even rouse from the depths of sleep, he’d chuckle to himself. He’d probably lay or sit nearby, both to make sure you sleep ok but also because he couldn’t help but want to sleep beside you and pull you into a warm embrace.

Bleach Captains Cursing
I started thinking about this, mainly with how different Kensei and Tousen and Shinji and Aizen's captain styles are, and this bloomed forth.
Kenpachi Zaraki:
- The supreme king of foul mouthed shinigami. Kenpachi came from the roughest place in the Rukongai and all his subordinates are rough and rowdy guys. Nobody gives a flying fuck about cussing.
- Unlike some of his subordinates, Kenpachi doesn't swear every sentence, he just doesn't care when or where he does it. Collectively refers to his division as "motherfuckers" or "bastards".
- Yachiru doesn't really swear as much, just mild stuff like "damn" or "hell". She does know the more extreme words, she just doesn't say them because Kenpachi bribed her with sweets - he doesn't need Yachiru shrieking "fuck!" over and over again in his ear.
- He doesn't care if people swear at him. He's used to it. He will mock you relentlessly if you use words like "heck" or "darn" and call you a pussy.
Kensei Muguruma:
- Not only does Kensei swear, but he will swear at his subordinates. Mashiro gets called "Dumbass" as much as her own name. While Kensei still does adhere to basic etiquette, especially places as rigid as Soul Society, he's generally more informal and his time in the World of the Living has shaped that as well.
- It took Hisagi a little time to adjust - Tousen never swore so at first he's a little shocked to hear a Captain speaking so bluntly, but he secretly gets a little giddy thrill like "Omg Muguruma-taicho swore! - I mean, drill sergeants are pretty famous for being foul-mouthed and that's Kensei's general captaining style. And chefs - Kensei's cursing gets 100% worse in the kitchen, and a lot more creative.
- Gets very sweary in bed. Especially if you're doing something that especially turns him on, like licking and sucking on his neck - he'll groan and mutter a throaty, "Fuck, babe..."
Lisa Yadomaru: - Not only does Lisa read porn out in the open, she also swears like a sailor. She has no sense of shame or decorum and gives no shits who's in earshot. - Lisa's not a person to swear out of anger, she just has a generally crass, laidback way of talking and she prefers to call a spade a spade. She's not going to shy away from perfectly suitable words just for the sake of some outdated idea of manners. If you don't like how she speaks, you don't have to copy her, but she won't be censored by anyone. - People who try to correct her to being more PG will find themselves roasted and psychoanalysed and Lisa diagnosing you with some kind of hidden kink that makes you scared of any kind of degeneracy. - The kind of person to use "bitch" as a compliment or will describe your outfit as being "so cunty", much to the glee of Yuyu and horror of Nanao.
Shinji Hirako:
- Like Lisa, Shinji doesn't swear because he's angry or feeling hostile in general, but he's just a casual guy who chafes under too much restriction and stuffiness. So he'll casually ask someone "what the fuck's yer problem?" without batting an eye, usually delivered in that deadpan way he has.
- Like Hisagi, Momo is a bit shocked by Shinji's uncouth mouth at first because of course Aizen never swore when he was a shinigami, but she might giggle at some of Shinji's more creative insults. He refers to Aizen as "that motherfucker" and manages to pack a fair amount of loathing into it. - The only time Shinji doesn't swear if he's annoyed is around Hiyori - mostly because Hiyori already screams insults at people at max volume, repeatedly and won't stop until she gets a reaction, so he and the other Vizards have gone out of their way to prevent her learning any swear words beyond "damn" or "crap."
Like Kensei, he also gets more foul-mouthed during bedroom activities, and his accent gets more pronounced as well. "S-shit, darlin', yer driving me crazy..."
Shunsui Kyoraku:
- Son of a very wealthy family he may be, but Shunsui is lackadaisical by nature and that includes his mouth. He doesn't go out of his way to swear but the words come very easily to him. - He does try to reserve the cussing for more appropriate situations - he got smacked upside the head by Yama-jii enough as a youth for speaking too informally to his superior officers, so he does know when and where to allow the filth to be verbalised. - Would NEVER swear at a woman, even if she's an enemy he has to fight. That's not gentlemanly! - Well, unless it's in the bedroom and you ask him to, but even then it's mostly to tell you how "fucking good" you make him feel. If you cuss at him he'll just chuckle and take it in good humour. He finds it cute and he's too old to be upset by a little blue language. Rose Otoribashi: - Rose is a pretty laidback guy and rarely feels much in the way of feeling angry or belligerent, so he's unlikely to swear up a storm. - He has no problems with other people swearing - he lived with Shinji, Kensei and Lisa for a century when they had very good reasons to vent out their angry, but overall he's not particularly foul-mouthed. - He does include swearing in his songs if it rhymes and feels appropriate to the mood, though. He's an artist and won't be bound by decorum when there's lyrics to be written!
Mayuri Kurotsuchi:
- Mayuri is generally very rude, not because he swears or uses crude language but because he's so relentlessly condescending. I think he views cussing as language of people with poor vocabulary.
- Not to say he won't swear if the situation calls for it, but he's insulting enough without needing them. In generally it's reserved for when he's really annoyed or really excited.
- Nobody in his division would dare swear at him, though people to swear if they fuck up an experiment or whatever. He'll mostly just roll his eyes or demand to know what all "the commotion" is. - Enjoys kicking back and watching Kenpachi and Byakuya argue back and forth during Captain's meetings about the former's dirty mouth, occupying a median between the two.
Soi Fon: - I know, she's surprisingly low on this list. But Soi Fon grew up in a very traditional family who value discipline and order greatly - speaking rudely before your superiors is a massive no-no, so I doubt she's been exposed to a lot of cussing growing up. - At heart Soi Fon is still pretty young for shinigami standards, she was a starstruck fangirl back in Turn Back The Pendulum, and unlike Byakuya she's terrible at reining in her temper. - This is also partly due to Yoruichi's influence - before Soi Fon met Yoruichi she would never have considered swearing, but when Yoruichi would casually swear in front of her it started to break that taboo a little bit. She doesn't do it in front of her own subordinates, feeling she needs to set an example, and won't stand for them swearing around her, but she has been known to let loose when especially frustrated. - There are two people who do frequently drive Soi Fon to swearing - Omaeda and Urahara. Unfortunately for her, only the former is around for her to smack.
Byakuya Kuchiki:
- Byakuya views himself as everything a shinigami should strive to be. Disciplined, logical, graceful, strictly adhering to rules and keenly aware of social graces. So naturally he does not cuss.
- ...In public. Byakuya isn't a fan of people like Kenpachi who swear all damn day, but he does still have that temper he did as a kid, he's just good at masking it.
- So he has cussed before when nobody is around or in the privacy of his own quartets. He manages to do it elegantly, but Byakuya Kuchiki has said "fuck." under his breath after stubbing his toe on the coffee table. - He never does so in public, though, and he'll outright mock people who do cuss in formal settings and ask if they were raised in a barn (he's bickered with Kenpachi many times over this). Kenpachi, Yoruichi and Ichigo are normally the only people who cuss at Byakuya and he despairs at the lot of them. Unohana Retsu: - I don't know for sure how Unohana spoke during her days as the first Kenpachi. Likely she had a much more crass manner of speech to go with her more outwardly bloodthirsty ways, so she probably had a foul mouth in her early years. - But, swearing up and down the corridor isn't really good bedside manner and Unohana had a complete overhaul of her aesthetic, mannerisms, attitude, etc when she became the Unohana we know. So she's likely not been publicly swearing for centuries, nor does she really need to - even captains older and more powerful than her like Shunsui and Ukitake still step lightly around her and her own division are scared of her despite her soft-spoken manner.
-I'd say Unohana only swears now when indulging in her bloodthirsty side, and probably only sparingly for extra impact. Kenpachi is probably the person who's heard her swear the most out of anyone. Sajin Komamura: - Given his honourable personality, Komamura probably doesn't like to swear much, especially not in the hearing of his subordinates. As the captain, he has to set a good example for his pack squad. - However, he does have a cheat code: when he gets angry and does want to cuss, he does...in dog language. So sometimes he'll be reading a mission report and he'll suddenly start snarling over some bad news, perhaps some people in his squad are MIA... - Cue barking and growling coming from his office. The only one who knows why he sometimes does this is Iba, who considers it a violation of his manly code to blab his captain's secrets - so he leaves his captain to bark his frustrations. - Komamura does send his dog out of the room if this happens - he doesn't want to besmirch his innocent ears.
Ukitake Juushiro:
- I know what you're going to say - this pure cinnamon roll would never swear! However, remember Ukitake is still a grown man, he's not going to have an asthma attack over one f-bomb. His best friend is Shunsui, after all.
- But yes, Ukitake himself does not cuss. Firstly he's a noble, albeit not as high ranking as Shunsi or Byakuya, and secondly he has a horde of impressionable younger siblings. And thirdly, he was practically raised by Yamamoto who takes a hardline stance on such things. These factors mean he's habitually clean-mouthed.
- The kind of guy who shushes people if they swear around kids, though he doesn't police people's language like Byakuya does - he just looks slightly scandalised.
- The only time he voluntarily swears is under extreme emotional duress. That's how you know shit is serious. Also, he blushes slightly when he swears even if he's feeling extremely upset or angered, like he's internally clutching his pearls but having to compartmentalise.
Hitsugaya Toshiro:
- Unsurprisingly the least foul mouthed since he's still a kid by shinigami standards. And he's still haunted by his granny washing his mouth out with soap when she heard him and Momo cuss once as kids.
- Not only does he not swear but nobody in his division swears unless he's out of earshot - even Rangiku tries to watch her language around her cute lil captain. (This doesn't apply if she's drunk but luckily most of what she does say when hammered is incoherent or rambling about Gin.) - He also blushes if he does hear swearing and will hiss about "you kiss your mother with that mouth?!", but if it's one of the older captains doing it then he can't really lecture them. - Even in his older form, swearing just doesn't sound natural coming from him, he sounds hilariously stiff and stilted with it. He tries to emulate Byakuya's dignified way of speech, unaware Byakuya swore because he burned his finger when his tea was too hot last week.

As someone a bit too young to have seen Bleach the first time around, AEIWAM is still consuming a crucial portion of my brain cells. So imagine my surprise when I looked up Tousen, the reason you started this behemoth of an alternate universe, on TV tropes.
Among other shocking revelations...
WHAT DO YOU MEAN, HE JOINED AIZEN OF HIS OWN FREE WILL IN CANON???? What do you MEAN, TITE KUBO, that the reason your Tousen wants to destroy the Shinigami is that his crush died of DOMESTIC VIOLENCE???
Who is this man and what has he done with my eternally suffering Tousen?
You understand why I had to take custody of this poor bastard.
I can respect what Kubo was going for- Aizen was right in the fact that Soul Society does suck, and the extended canon is that Tousen's crush was killed by her husband, everyone knew it, and nobody would prosecute the husband because he was a Noble. Canon Tousen is, more or less, suffering from the same kind of rage-based brainrot that is unfortunately so common these days- the idea that because a system is imperfect, or ever corrupt, that it's a good idea to tear the whole thing down/restart the universe (the real Path Of Least Harm is of course, the much more complicated and frustrating work of Dis-and-re-mantling the system piece-by-piece without leaving vulnerable people to fend for themselves, but that isn't as emotionally satisfying or fun to draw as senseless destruction, but I digress).
but his arc is only barely on the page at all, mostly after his death and contains one of the blandest and most obnoxious tropes- fridging- and the whole thing falls flat. It also fails to explore the FASCINATING angle of disability and tbh, racism in soul society- two VERY fucked up things that would very much justify his rage. But it's shonen and the series was deep in production hell at that point, and tousen was far from the only victim. I still don't know what the fuck Gin's deal was.
ANYWAY,
Notable changes between Canon!Tousen and AEIWAM!Tousen and some art under the cut:
Kakiyo is Kaname's adopted sister, and despite looking nothing alike, since they re-incarnated in soul society at the same time, they regard themselves as twins.
Kakiyo does kind of a lot in the plot before her demise- she's responsible for introducing Kaname and Komamura, teaches Zaraki and Yachiru how to read, and unintentionally helps Aizen by recommending him to be promoted to third seat in the 5th division, because she and Kiganjo were thinking about starting a family soon, and Aizen would make a good stand-in for her while she was on maternity leave.
She also gets to do a bunch of stuff after she dies too!
The characters in Tousen's name approximately mean "Necessary Scholar" and make an allusion to a legendary scholar from China who came to Japan to find the elixir of immortality for the emperor. He returns with an elixir that stops the emperor from aging, and the emperor kills him so he can't make anyone else immortal (the emperor doesn't age, but he's still vulnerable to stabbing, and gets stabbed). I thought that was an extremely fun literary allusion so I'm leaning into it- before he becomes a Shinigami, AEIWAM!Tousen took over the library run by his ans Kakiyo's adopted godparents, and ran a children's literacy program. he has a special interest in information sciences and educational methodology. even among nerds, he's a mega-nerd.
Kakiyo meets and marries Gosuke Kiganjo, who goes back to West 51 to meet his beloved's brother and the weird giant monk that runs the library with him. Kaname is immensely fond of Kiganjo, and has no qualms being the best man at their wedding. He and Gosuke are good friends for the first few years of the marriage, until Aizen gets his claws into Gosuke and slowly drives him insane.
In AEIWAM, Tousen is cursed into going along with the plan by Aizen. Aizen was just going to make Kiganjo kill him, but Gin is getting impatient with Aizen's hogyoku progress, and persuades Aizen into cursing Kaname into compliance instead with a Forbidden Bakudō: Kyuunodo — Ningyō Kugi Saiyaku (人形釘誓約, Puppet Nail Covenant)
I do keep the canon!Tousen's reputation for being pedantic, unecessarily critical and generally kind of boring. The reason for AEIWAM!Tousen's reputation is different: He is kind of a pain in the ass, because he is in Horrific Pain and Deeply Traumatized and that makes people irritable to say the least, and he deliberately cultivates a reputation for being Boring to keep people far, far away from him- and hopefully, far from Aizen as well.
An underrated bit of Canon!Tousen is that Suzumushi is not his zanpakuto. Suzumushi was Kakiyo's zanpakuto, and we see him take the sword from her coffin in the manga. Which is insane because it means HE ACHIEVED BANKAI WITH A ZANPAKUTO THAT WASN'T EVEN HIS. Dude is SEVERELY underrated as a swordsman. In AEIWAM, Suzumushi is still Kakiyo's zanpakuto, and only BARELY clings to life on the last reserves of the Spiritual power Kakiyo put into her before Kaname finds her. Suzumushi persuades him to take her up, enter the academy and bring Kakiyo's killer to justice (Suzumushi has fallen to Aizen's illusion and doesn't know who the killer is). She kind of glosses over how they bond, but she more or less crawls into his soul and supresses Kaname's native Yume-kon that would have been his own Zanpakuto spirit if it had been allowed to awaken. She did make an entirely new Shikai and Bankai for him- the chime that makes people lose conciousness is entirely new, the AOE of Just A Shitload Of Swords was Suzumushi's original Shikai. The Bankai of a space where anyone not touching the sword experiences no sensory input? Suzumushi made it first and foremost as a refuge for Kaname when the pain of the curse became to unbearable.
The biggest difference, of course, is that Kaname lives through the Aizen Arc and gets a Happy Ending: Once he wakes up after the battle, he is free, and chooses to marry the wolfman he's been in love with for centuries. Here's some art of them, finally home:
