The team started as the Spartanburgh Phillies in 1963 and was in Spartanburgh, South Carolina until 1995 when the team moved to Kannapolis and became the Piedmonth Phillies, the following year the team changed it's name to Piedmont Boil Weevils until 2000 and the team change affiliation in 2001 and the team changed it's name to Kannapolis Intimidators when NASCAR Legend Dale Earnhardt purchased a share in the team's ownership and change the name in honor of Earnhardt's legendary nickname. The Intimidators is the 3rd White Sox farm team to be located in the Carolinas (Charlotte Knights, Winston-Salem Dash, Kannapolis Intimidators). The team logo was designed by Sam Bass, who designed paint schemes and uniforms of many NASCAR, IndyCar and NHRA race cars.
