#EmmettTill #MamieTillMobley
Tumblr media
Today (July 25, 2023), on what would have been Emmett Till’s 82nd birthday, President Joe Biden signed a proclamation to establish the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument honoring Till and his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley. In 1955, Emmett was 14 when he was kidnapped, tortured and murdered because a white woman accused him of “inappropriately interacting" with her.
Tumblr media
Reposted from @savingplaces Meet our nation’s newest national monument, the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument... which includes:
Tumblr media
- Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ (Chicago, Illinois), founded in 1916. Following Mamie Till Mobley’s decision to “let the world see what I’ve seen,” an estimated 100,000 people filed past Emmett’s casket over three days in September 1955.
Tumblr media
- Tallahatchie County Courthouse (Sumner, Mississippi), the site of the September 1955 trial of J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant for Emmett Till’s murder. The building was restored to its 1955 condition and the Emmett Till Interpretive Center opened across the street to provide interpretation.
Tumblr media
- Graball Landing on the banks of the Tallahatchie River in Mississippi, the site where Emmett Till’s body was found.
This new national monument is an opportunity for the nation to remember the life and legacy of 14-year-old Emmett Till and his mother, Mamie Till Mobley, for catalyzing the American #CivilRightsMovement.
“Imbued in these now permanently protected buildings and landscapes are the unspeakable crimes of racial violence, and the tireless strength of Mamie Till Mobley who harnessed her grief in pursuit of #socialjustice. Through historic preservation, this multiracial coalition of partners will continue its work to uplift this new national monument and secure the resources and investment needed to ensure the site's future.”
- Brent Leggs, Executive Director, African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund

This spaceship-looking building in historic Milwaukee-Junction was built in 1971 as the then-new Stanley's Mannia Café. Stanley Hong came to Detroit in the 1930s from China's Canton Province, now known as Guangdong, working for a Chinese restaurant located in the Black Bottom area. Beginning in 1940, Mr. Hong would go into business on his own, starting with the original Mannia Café, once located at 565 East Canfield and Hastings Street (demolished for Detroit Medical Center expansion). The new Stanley's Mannia Café came next and became among the city's most popular restaurants, frequently by many of Detroit's entertainment and political elite, particularly in the African-American community. Hong also operated Stanley's Other Place, located at 2411 West 8 Mile Road, which opened in 1978 and closed in 2014. The structure was designed by Nathan Johnson & Associates, headed by pioneering Detroit-based African-American architect, Nathan Johnson. It is an example of Googie architecture, which gets its name from a long gone coffeehouse in West Hollywood, designed by John Lautner, a pupil of Frank Lloyd Wright. In the early 1990s, Stanley's became "the original epicenter of the rap music club scene in the early '90s in Detroit.", according to Paul Rosenberg, Detroit native and music executive, when another Detroiter, Maurice Malone, a clothing designer, founded Rhythm Kitchen, a weekly underground night that became a platform for many up-and-coming artists in Detroit hip-hop, including a young Marshall Mathers. Stanley's Mannia Café closed in 1995 and later served two stints as a church - Omega Baptist and Grace Fellowship Baptist - before closing for good. Despite being vacant, the structure was recently designated a local historic district by the City of Detroit, a testament to its importance on a multitude of levels. #Detroit #MilwaukeeJunction #Googie #GoogieArchitecture #Modernism #NathanJohnsonandAssociates #archi_ologie #deserve2preserve #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter #SavingPlaces #GalaxyS10 #withGalaxy (at Milwaukee Junction, Detroit) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxKx7IcA1-2/?igshid=e5yey2r4xm53

This is the Newton D. Baker House, a National Historic Landmark. Two points of interest about the NHL program and this landmark in particular: • While there are 90,000 properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, only 2,500 are National Historic Landmarks. If a property is designated as a latter, it is automatically added as a former. Both programs are administered by the @nationalparkservice... Talk about a dream job! • Jacqueline Kennedy purchased this house and lived in it with her immediate family in the year after John’s tragic death. #georgetown #federalrevival #federalrevivalarchitecture #federalrevivalstyle #federalrevivalhouse #newtondbakerhouse #georgetownarchitecture #georgetowndc #historic #historichomes #thisplacematters #historicdistrict #archi_ologie #homeandgarden #jackiekennedy #doriccolumns #columns #historicpreservation #preservation #savingplaces #mygeorgetown #igersgeorgetown #keystone #igers_georgetown #igersdc #igers_dc #dcblogger #nationalhistoriclandmark #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #dcinventoryofhistoricsites (at Georgetown) https://www.instagram.com/p/CM0At8xHMAK/?igshid=ybvy2bp2uiy8

A break from Galapagos programming to share some recent editorial work for @savingplaces. I photographed @theformosa, an iconic hangout from Hollywood’s Golden Age, beautifully restored by @1933group. One of my favorite stories from this space is the "Bugsy Siegel safe.” This is where the famous mobster during the Prohibition era would hide wads of cash under the floorboard of his booth. The booth and safe are still intact today. As I was wrapping up my shoot, I overheard the staff getting ready for the Kardashians' reservation. Times they have changed! #savingplaces #formosacafe #preservationmagazine (at The Formosa Cafe) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9mzitWHSgL/?igshid=wdjrr4jvgucc

Phylicia Rashad is an ambassador and advocate for the African American culture Heritage Action Fund (@SavingPlaces) and she is involved with the Brainerd Institute Heritage. In an interview with @blackamericaweb she talks about both. Brainerd Institute Heritage is owned by Dr Vivian Ayers Allen (@therealdebbieallen and Phylicia Rashad are her daughters). Brainerd Institute Heritage is located in Chester County, South Carolina. On June, 4th there starts the Workshops in Open Fields. Workshops in Open Fields at Brainerd Institute is based on the ground-breaking program created by Dr. Vivian Ayers Allen in Houston. This educational initiative will continue to expand each year to benefit the Chester County community and provide a shining example of how education in South Carolina – and our nation – can be approached in a way that truly engages the minds of young people and encourages a lifelong love of learning. Certified teachers from the Chester County School District enthusiastically volunteer their time to participate as teachers for the program. The innovative approach to education is as refreshing to the teachers as it is to the students. No Name Thursday I'm in awe. 😍 #archi_wonder What beauty. Travel with Emily on her IG...guaranteed inspiration. Thanks for tagging #archi_ologie @Regrann from @emsontheroad - If you ever find yourself traveling with me, there are a few things you should know. I could spend hours photographing the same building, capturing as many angles and details as possible. I am always looking for beer or ice cream, sometimes both. I collect postcards from places I visit and never remember to send them to people. I should really change that one day 🤔 If you're wondering, this Spanish Colonial stunner is the San Mission Xavier built in 1797 ☀️ #savingplaces #architecture - #regrann (at San Xavier Mission)

April 18 is the International Day for Monuments and Sites, also known as #WorldHeritageDay, which raises awareness about the significance of @unesco World Heritage Sites and inspires increased protections for these places—many of which are under threat. The threat to World Heritage Sites was made glaringly apparent to the world earlier this week when Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris caught fire. Why do these places matter? "Most of us have felt this sense of loss when places that are part of our shared universal heritage are destroyed," writes National Trust staff member @tommayes7. "When a treasured place disappears, whether it is a national cathedral, an old school, or a modest community church in Louisiana torched by an arsonist, people often feel a palpable sense of grief, a soul-destroying severing of people from place, identity, and memory." Head to the link in our profile to read more about why these places matter. 📷: Martie Stewart (Creative Commons)⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ #worldheritagesites #unesco #unescoworldheritage #notredame #cathedral #paris #france #notredamefire #thisplacematters #whyoldplacesmatter #historic #preservation #culturalheritage #stainedglass #rosewindow #linkinbio

PRESERVATION MAGAZINE: I photographed the Haas Lilienthal House in San Francisco after they raised over $4 million to bring it back to life.  Nice reported piece by Reed Karaim on the history of the house, San Francisco Heritage (whose offices are upstairs), tours, the Haas Lilienthal family, how the work got done, and lots more.  Magazine is produced by The National Trust For Historic Preservation.  I am happy to be a member! Outtakes not in the magazine, except for a couple, because.

what we’re “conserving” in this life is the path to eternal life
A world now invisible to us, but much more real than this world is.
A place where Love is real, constantly, where Light illumines everything.
this is why words mean so much, to bear more weight than gold. words are a “store of value” worth more than money. even our Creator is known as the Word of God.
and so, what we think and believe and write and speak truly matters. we will give account for all of it. our very lives are being recorded into real books. and we can see a “glimpse” of this in how people are sharing things online all over the world, recorded and stored on servers. for better or for worse.
there’s inspiration for building things in this world. for creating. but not all things are pure in nature. some start good, and turn from it. and some good things do keep on being good.
the Spirit was sent to earth nearly 2,000 years ago to build the Body, the Temple of a pure Church as the Bride of the eternal King, to One day depart to meet Him in the air for a heavenly “marriage”
(A secret elopement)
and so, in the meantime people have built many different kinds of churches on earth. some uphold spiritual truth, and sadly some do not. people have gone astray into many idolatrous rituals in worship. but Love seeks purity of heart & mind, and humility. Love seeks to unify in its pure Light (inside & out) to turn people back to Love and its truth.
nobody on earth is a “perfect” person, that much is True, but we worship the Perfect One.
(have we realized that grace perfects us through sacred Blood?)
please don’t adulterate the Genesis and its rebirth.
(inside, Anew)
A tweet that crossed my path from Connecticut about the inspiration of building a church from the eyes of an architect:
@SavingPlaces
“Have you ever thought what it would be like to live in a giant sapphire?” architect Wallace K. Harrison asked before designing First Presbyterian Church of Stamford, CT.
See the result of his jewel box inspo:
#SavingPlaces #SacredPlaces @sacred_places
5.7.23 • 1:00pm • Twitter
the Master Architect of the universe is our beautiful mysterious Creator who has prepared a heavenly city for those who “believe…”
A new Jerusalem
